    One of the problems I have had with these services over cable is the inability to quickly jump to stations because there are no "channel numbers" assigned. On cable, you can quickly jump from channel 124 to channel 26 with a few remote clicks.

    Nope. Had YTTV for 14 months. Wife very frustrated that History channel missing. Just installed an 80 mile range Digital antenna in my attic. 53 clear local channels. Switched to Sling Blue with an AirTV 2 to integrate the antenna channels into the Sling guide. So far its great and wife is happy. ROI is about a year.

      Since OTA went digital, it's been very difficult for me to pick up channels... even when I was living in Houston and tried multiple antennas. I could pick up barely a few, but not all. That's all I want is local stations and no matter which service I would go to, it's a $22+ add-on. For local OTA free channels!

      I'm a sports fan but can't justify paying more than $50 a month. It was fine when the cost was $35-40. Even sports are on various streaming apps too. And the big events are typically on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox so just get a digital antenna for that. I would pay a small amount if these companies would offer AL la carte. I literally just want espn, FS1, tbs, and tnt. To your point, we can get more shows and movies than ever through 2 or 3 streaming apps

    I can’t understand why people pay a premium for live TV and tolerate all those commercials. I remember when we first got cable TV in the early 1980’s. The entire premise was to have more content, better quality signal of broadcast channels, and avoid commercials. People were pissed when HBO scrambled their picture around 1984/1985. I have TH-cam TV till the end of August 2023. There are a few channels I like, but there are way too many sports, old reruns stations, news, and Spanish-speaking stations(which there should be none). The plan is to use Plex. I might buy the antenna to get local stations. I have had TH-cam TV for a very long time, and I will admit I do not like having to learn a new way of viewing things I like to watch, but it is the cost that is making me change. With the other stations I pay for, TH-cam TV is not worth it just for Local stations. If the average person is paying over $100 a month just for TV, that is just insane anymore. You would think with all the competition, prices would be lower, but not anymore. Maybe TH-cam TV will smarten up and let people pick the stations they want to view, but that would mean they have to get into a lot more contracts with stations and the cost will go up. I am moving on.

    You missed two nifty DVR features.
    1. The DVR is channel agnostic. If you record a series that is in reruns, it will record all broadcasts from all channels with a single setting. (We are catching up on Blue Bloods and it has recorded live shows on the network and now is getting old shows that recently started broadcasting on ION.)
    2. TH-cam can change the recording start and end *after* the show has finished recording. Recently American Idol's broadcast after the Oscar's didn't match the protected start and end time. I found an option for reporting incorrect start time and incorrect end time for the recording. It was fixed by the next morning so that the recording matched the broadcast. Pretty cool.

    The biggest problem with TH-camTV for seniors is the Font Size and Color, especially on the Live Guide. A light gray font on a dark gray background is very difficult for many seniors. Why not a WHITE font on BLACK background or the reverse? And why not be able to increase font size and reduce the time period on the Live Guide? TH-camTV needs to consider the visibility of text for vision impaired individuals.

      Several years ago, web designers had an international conference where they tried to make guidelines to help people who have trouble with extreme contrast text such as absolute black over absolute white. They even defined the exact technical specifications. Management sociopaths only heard make it all gray over gray, IMHO, the geeks said, "Ok fine." and made many pages ludicrous as an inside joke. Of course, I feel that way about many online systems, to the point, I routinely joke, "The geeks are laughing." As I work with some computer geeks, this rings true for me.
      On HTML pages, I often hit CTRL with A to select "ALL" so the highlighting gives better text contrast.

    Here's the deal. The average cable subscriber in this country pays between $150 to $250 including premium channels and some sports packages. Right now the choice seems to be between TH-cam, TV, Hulu, and maybe another contender. But to be able to watch the majority of your live TV for less than 100 bucks is still ideal. At this point. One thing that makes TH-camTV better than the others is portability. I live across two locations, and my kids have their personal accounts. In my view, it is the best service if you want to be in multiple locations and if you have viewers in multiple locations. The other services have much stricter rules. Tablo has been a fantastic addition for me because now I have my own local stations whereever I go with full DVR recording capability. Tablo was my first step in potentially cancelling a live TV service. Tablo has given me live TV in my second location where antenna based TV is impossible. One real benefit of Tablo with TH-camTV is the sports because now I can often times get two local sets of sporting events.

    I'm sorry but I'm with xfinity for life. I have an x1 cable box, over 1,000 channels. An over the air antenna hardly gets me anything in my area and none of the streaming live tv services get me nearly enough of what I want to watch. Xfinity has all of my classic tv reruns on various channels, plus local channels and more. Yes it's more expensive but well worth it for me. I tried a few of the live tv streaming apps you mentioned but I always wind up going back to traditional cable. To each their own, I suppose.

      I know this is a year later, but I have to say that I once felt the same way about Xfinity.. Not any more though! Why? After the expected January increases, they upped my charges by $63.00 in the middle of April. When I queried the increase, I was steered to what was supposed to be a more affordable plan. That plan was actually $12.00 more than the one I was complaining about. I hate to be taken for a fool. Clearly, the associate with whom I was negotiating was seeing to the most profitable commission for herself.
      I am busily reviewing other options.

    You didn’t mention my #1 reason for switching to TH-camTV…portability. I tried sling and hulu previously and you couldn’t use them while traveling because of the local restrictions (sling since dropped). Hulu, you could change your location but only a few times per year, maybe that’s changed. Anyway, we have a second property 30 miles away but in a different market, and we can use a single TH-camTV subscription to cover both. As long as we check in at “home” regularly. Oh, and Sunday Ticket. No brainer.

      Unfortunately not everyone lives in a area with OTA antennas work. We can get 2 of the major broadcast channels due to the mountains, trees and elevation. And this is in a community of over 100K residents in the city alone and another 50K in the county. For many of us cable or satellite are the only options. Not even streaming is an option for those of us outside of the city limits because the companies with the monopoly won't pay to install it where people have 5-10 acre homes.

Pay $249 for the highest package because my husband needs to watch sports HBO & Showtime boxing, NFL, NBA NHL depending on the season & sport. Then the streaming companies play Monopoly and buy out channels exclusively to make us pay more to watch. UGH what should I do?? Try TH-cam TV?

  • @barna1299
    @barna1299 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Thanks Michael for this video, it's definitely helpful as I'm trying to determine which streaming service is the best choice for us. We've been with Comcast Xfinity for cable tv for a number of years, too long!, and although the channel lineup and dvr features and the guide interface is pretty good, the costs are just way way too high now.
    I agree with some people commenting that perhaps $73 is a bit high, but from what I've seen on YTTV's website for the channel lineup, I think it would give us most of the channels we enjoy now with Comcast. There are a few missing, but still I see more with YTTV than with Hulu.
    I had understood from another review about the same dvr recording issue you mentioned, so that would probably be one reason why we wouldn't choose YTTV... But I still don't know enough about all of Hulu's services, so I'm still researching about them too.
    I'm definitely going to check out SlingTV now that you've mentioned about it. I knew about SlingTV but hadn't yet checked out their website, so I will now. Although I see they only offer 50 hrs dvr recording.. And how can I find out more about exactly how their dvr features are and how their on screen interface is..?
    Since we do watch a lot of live local programming like all the local news stations as well as a number of other channels that are available over-the-air, like ION, the CW, the cbs weather channel, and others, I would connect an antenna to our tv. So thanks for showing what you use, I definitely would want to get a strong antenna to be able to receive as many ota channels as possible.
    Well, thanks again for your video review, it definitely helps as I continue to research which streaming service we will go with. And I do plan to get a good Roku device w/remote since our main tv, even though it's fairly big in size, it isn't a "smart tv". So thanks for the screen shot of the Roku device!

    • @MichaelSaves
      @MichaelSaves  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For Sling TV, I do have older reviews. But the great thing is you can download the app and use Sling Freestream. That has the same interface. So you can test the look and feel without paying. Sling TV’s DVR is very much like a traditional DVR. You can record and delete single episodes. I also have a recent video that summarizes the pros and cons of the major live TV services. Another one worth checking out.

    Can you pause and rewind just like you would with live TV. We have DirecTv right now and are thinking of switching because we want the NFL ticket. But we like to switch between the channels frequently and are afraid that we cannot do that. Like you cannot do that with Amazon Prime. You have to keep it on the same channel or go out of the app and then go back in it to watch it. We don't want to have to do that. Then there is no number assigned to the channel so, how do you know how to get to that channel without going to the guide.

    This was extremely helpful… especially because I’m one of those newbie’s cutting the cable bill, Xfinity. 🤨 They just went up $20 per month!

    YT recommended this video, watched it, very informative! Subbed. I just cut the cord after buying/testing a Roku device. Works great, bought additional for rest of tvs in house and turned in my Directv equip this am! $73 a month is much cheaper than the $350 a month I was paying for all the boxes, price increases, etc. No going back and don't have to worry about rain messing up signal!

      I did the same. I only kept Directv for my husband, who passed away last summer, and the NFL SUNDAY TICKET. October bill was $129.00, November was $179. They called, sent offers..after 20 years…hahaha. I’ve had a Roku since they first came out, just upgraded my tv to a “Smart Tv”, I still use a Roku device. I’m glad there are others who are ditching Directv! Have a nice day.😊

      The service is intended for up to 6 members who primarily live in the same household, though some people try to get around this rule.
