Catch & Cook: CRAZY Sea Serpent Fish | New Zealand Ep 10 | Field Trips with Robert Field

- In this episode we're hand feeding big sharks from the boat while we hide from strong winds in Port Fitzroy. Then we cook up a seafood feast including all the fish we've caught so far: yellowtail kingfish, Australasian snapper, golden snapper and the bizarre looking frostfish that Stephen pulled up from the deep. Nothing beats fresh seafood that you harvested yourself!

When you were whistling every dog in my damn house started barking. Thanks
Hahahah
Man you're videos show why fishing is such an amazing thing to do. The people, the adventures its always a pleasure seeing what you got going in Rob thanks for the content
MAN! Divers all over the world would kill to see a fish like that and you guys eat it?
Divers in that part of the world see them constantly, they aren’t endangered. And when you bring a fish up from that deep, it’s chances of survival are slim. It didn’t go to waste though
Sea serpent is at 14:04 you’re welcome
Tj Jones thank u good sir
Thank u lol
All heroes don’t wear capes
Thanks dude
Not a Sea Serpent......its a Hairtail...
The frost fish, here in Northeast FL we call a cutlass fish or ribbon fish we use the small ones (10 to 15") to troll for king mackerel. I have seen them that size here also.
Different species, but same family. I’ve used ribbonfish for bait in Texas too, great for kings.
whenever you lose the fish it instantly grows 50% in size, true story.
At least
I don’t care much about fishing or fishing shows , I clicked to see the serpent fish , but stayed for the great content .
Wow thanks man, glad you enjoyed it!
Damn, now this is living. Thank you for sharing, new life goals.
The part were he dolphin-calls a shark to the boat was hilarious. Made my day!
What an awesome adventure down under!
That teaser at the end of episode looks great ...!!
Finally another video! I know they come in regularly, I'm just impatient, and have watched every video already Haha. Great job man. Tight lines
The most interestingly edited Field Trips yet. Still a ton of fun following your adventures.
When that TV show "Survivor" first came out, I went horse yelling at the TV set because those people were going hungry❗
I mean, how can anyone go hungry on an ocean shoreline of a tropical island❓😱
Catch, clean and cook......
Absolutely heaven on earth, thanks for sharing it with us Robert.....
It's these added parts of the trip that set your videos above the others❗👍❗😎
Thanks so much man! Glad you enjoyed it
You boys are right.... you do keep Brenda up at night feeding those sharks!! Love you all ♥️😂
Always been a dream to just live on the sea, drifting, and fishing and eating fish.. You are living the Dream mate!

Great nugget of information on the silver fern, Rob.
Next best thing from kayaking. Great eats and plenty of jokes.

He turn the shark around with the dolphin call u got her now..!!🤣🤣
Well done , Rob!
this channel deserves way more attention😁
That sea serpent fish is really good eating bro. You can eat it in many different way. Marinate it with a little bit of salt. Dry both sides under the sun for one sunny day - and fry it or bbq it - make some sauce to dip it or dress it - it's really good. Hard to find fresh fish like that in shore.
Yeah it was delicious
Great video!! Going back in your videos to watch you catch some rainbow trout. Lisa ~ Colorado, USA
Nice!!
Man, your videos are better than most the stuff on flow. Thanks for sharing, keep going!
I have a pack of Basenji dogs for pets. We have a few acres of land with a pond, and all 7 are usually either in their water or watching the fish. When you start to scream, all of my Basenji’s happen to be inside, and start to howl. I was like 😫
All time fish trip!
Epic video, thanks
Outstanding and very entertaining video!
I had my first musky in a creek swim backwards after I set the hook. Then took off like a rocket, tail walked like flipper, tried to again but I changed his trajectory and he did a drag jerking outbound one and a half gainer. West Virginia has over sixty streams, creeks and rivers that support wild musky.
Love this, I'm SO jealous , fishing , fun, friends, food,
It was a good time
@@YakFishField I'm a kayak angler and malty species fisherman too, I love to catch anything with teeth
Heading out there today, blue skys here in Auckland, not a breath of wind. 👍
😮omg ! That is so yummy. Fresh sushi from the sea😋😬
Awesome content, because of you, i decided to buy a kayak to go fishing in the bay, it seems so fun
It is SO fun. Enjoy it!!
those frost fish are also known as hairtail or cutlass fish, very commonly eaten in Korea delicious!
far out i forgot about this at 11:13 very rare to find a kingfisher's nest like this. pretty sad to see the small one dead though but still an impressive find on their nest
Pretty sweet!
Looked like pinfish and ribbonfish here in the Gulf. I catch them in corpus all the time, though never one that long. Caught a few with a silver spoon near an outlet.
Daaaang I wanna try that fish! Y'all mad it look like thee bomb!!
Aaron Starr Popular in Spain and especially Portugal. Definitely try if you come. But it’s not cheap.
Great videos! Hey, that Frost fish is also called 'Cutlass' fish here in the US. I've caught one off the coast of VA before. Very prehistoric looking.
They are also called ribbon fish
“Give a man a fish, he will only eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he can eat for a lifetime.” Great vid guys.
Too true
Have fun my guy
Always do!
We call them silver eels in Florida, we use them for kingfish bait. But we eat the big ones, they are delicious.
Different fish, but same family. I always called those ribbonfish in Texas.
@@YakFishField Same, ribbon fish
Golden snapper is absolutely amazing
Great video Rob such an amazing trip to have gone on!
It's 1 am and I'm starting to get hungry again and I have to click on the video with good food.
Hahaha my bad
5:33am here and I wanna try that golden snapped & that everything else.. I could taste and smell the food from the screen 😂
Fawwaz Hamdan hehe, yeah summer habits.
My fav so far has been pan seared Grouper. Red snapper is just as good.
Grouper>bluefin steak>BBQ eel steaks.
(If you haven’t had eel, definitely try from a decent restaurant. Everyone avoids but they’re super tasty.)
I've been waiting
That Frost fish looks like a species caught in Australia called "Hairtail"...
Cutlass fish or as we call them here in Florida -- ribbonfish
They are both Cutlass fish but the ribbon fish has a very different tail if you look..
Yeah we catch em in Georgia too. But I’ve never caught one that big with the split tail either
Oarfish?
Nope, not an oarfish, its a cutlass fish
Just stumbled upon the channel. Only vid I’ve seen but hella entertaining. Earned a sub from me.
You guys are a trip I was laughing the whole time 😂😂
Tachiuo, Cutlass fish, Ribbon Fish, Large Head Hairtail. Considered trash by many Americans and thrown away but a very good fish to eat. We specifically target them here in Japan. Usually caught at night on glow jigs or special jigs with bait added or in 300/400+ meters during the day on bait. They are great eating but a few commercial captains here told me that they are used in making cosmetics.
What an awesome video food looked amazing
Olá sou do Brasil São Paulo capital, muito bom parabéns teus vídeos são muito bom...perfectian...👏👏👏👏
Do more like this Bro
After seeing that frost fish, im going to try the next ribbon fish i catch.
Nice Video, Hey Rob the Frost Fish has a variant that lives in the marianas trench and can reach more than 30 feet long!!!
What took you so long! xD That's a place i would've lived forever! Sea serpents, we call them Swords in Greece and they are delicious!
Your content is top notch. You should have way more subscribers. Thumbs up.👍
Thanks buddy
I used to eat the serpentine fish in Morocco a lot. So delicious
Youssef Bencharki samta
Great videos! Too bad I’ve already seen the rest of the New Zealand shows on Waypoint TV app!
We call it a ribbon fish here in Virginia. You catch them off the piers here.
That’s a different species, but a relative. Ribbonfish make great kingfish bait!
That’s my back yard.. gods country!! Should have taken them out for some John Dory fishing one of the best eating fish!!side note frost fish great sword fish bait!!!
Good to know! Next time!
Robert Field just out of curiosity, did they have you doing much live baiting or dead bait stray lining?? Key ingredients for monsters
This was a really great fishing day frost fish in Trinidad & Tobago in the Caribbean it's call cutlassfish and its delicious Yep.
Great videos dude keep it up 👍
Thanks man I will!
This video made me hungry for fish. Fortunately I have some fresh redfish. I was curious, so I looked it up. The frost fish that are found off the New Zealand continental shelf(Latin name Lepidopus caudatus) is a different species than our Atlantic ribbonfish/cutlassfish(Latin name Trichiurus lepturus).
JakeW YakAngler We call this scabbard fish near Portugal. I think this is the same fish..
Happy days 420🤣🤤
Lepidopus caudatus, is the scientific name for the Frost fish....there are some 45 types of ribbon fish, this is one that lives down under! We call them Cutlass fish in Trinidad and Tobago...we fish them whole for Tarpon and sometimes snapper and they can be slow trolled for King Macks......the are also eaten regularly here.
Interesting info. I use ribbonfish for bait for kingfish (king mackerel, different fish) in Texas. Best bait for em trolled dead on a stinger rig.
Frost fish are also known as ribbon fish back here in the states
the sea serpent in Brazil is called Peixe Espada "sword fish" translating. We catch them at night with bobbers, chemical lights and fish filet. (best filet to catch them is their own filet)
We have them by the thousands here and are called cutlass fish. They are also known as ribbon fish and hartail.
Down were I live we call them ribbon fish and they are really good bait
That’s a different species, but related. I’ve caught many kingfish off the Texas coast on dead ribbonfish with a double stinger rig.
Saw you scrapping the skin on the first plate... Nooo! But you made up for it. Glad you did otherwise you'll be missing out.
The long silver fish is called a ribbon fish in Florida
Different fish, but they’re related.
Life’s a simulation and fish despawn when you release it.
16:50 why does he sound like a car trying to start with a dead battery😂😂
Cutlass fish is good eating? Important info for those weird finds at the fish market. Nice.
15 minutes in and that's a big ribbon fish
Relative
bro how the hell did you know I live in oklahoma, youtube algorithms are craaaazy
Capt. Aaron's galley GrubHub delights!
at 1:28 that fish yeeted out of existence
Just happy you got the place in life that way you can do what the hell you want and that's a lot to say about what you did before
That frost fish looks like the ribbon fish we have in Texas
Taylor Goody Don’t ribbonfish have red dorsal thing?
7:52 nice toy
Lotta flex in that pole, probably get some good action
go to a little island called green island its great fishing. or green rock which is submerged in water great fish go to karaka bay and ask the locals
Big ole ribbon fish
But have you guys secured the batter recipe yet?
