Snapper Fishing & BIG Bronzie Sharks -- New Zealand Ep 7 | Field Trips with Robert Field

  • In this episode we're anchored down in a small cove off Arid Island, a tiny spit of land 50 miles off the coast of Auckland. We've brought 8 kayaks with us, and we're fishing up close to the wash rocks in search of big Australasian snapper.
    Then, back on the Bounty Hunter, I hook into one of the big bronze whaler sharks that have been circling the boat since we arrived.
    COMMENT BELOW and tell me if you'd want to take a trip like this! Who thinks they could handle one of those sharks? I'm still sore!

    What lure is that hanging on the wall behind you when you hook the shark? ;)
    Don't think I've seen one like it before, its massive. I'm guessing that's what you use to attract the pink snapper haha

    Also why do their snappers look like porgies or what we call porgies here back in the states?

    • @MYeahman
      @MYeahman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha its just common names in different parts of the world, in Aus/NZ Snapper (Pagrus Auratus) are a species of Sea Bream commonly known as Porgy/Porgies.
      Although we do have plenty of species that you would recognise as "snapper". All these fish are members of the Lutjanus family.
      What you refer to as mangrove or grey snapper I recognise as being very similar to the Mangrove Jack.
      What you recognise Jack Crevalle we would call a Trevally.
      Like I said, common names are Ok at a regional level, but it got confusing as they got blended making their way around the world

    • @comeatmebro3229
      @comeatmebro3229 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      they are in the same family as porgie (sea bream) as are a few other fish here in Australia, yellowfin bream, tarwine, black bream just to name a couple. and as you could see they get much bigger then most porgie in the US, commonly caught where i live upward of 10kg (22lb)
      we do get fish in the true snapper family however but they aren't called snapper here, Mangrove jack are closely related to cubera and mangrove snapper in the US and a fish we call spanish flag are also in the snapper family same with Moses perch a fish Rob caught earlier when the other guy got that flattie.
      its just different names for different places like we have a fish called a blue groper (not grouper) but its actually in the wrasse family, what we call cod are in the grouper family (most of them are) and what we call trevally in the US are commonly called Jack and in South africa they are called kingfish (what would Americans call a giant trevally? giant jack just doesn't sound right, what we call kingfish other places just call yellowtail and our spanish Mackerel Americans mistake for King Mackerel (and they get angry about it to for some reason, they might look similar but are different species).

      most people smoke the fish heads but since they are staying on a boat it makes it hard to keep fish heads
