  • CBT Unhelpful Thinking Styles (STOP Self-Sabotage NOW)
Identify which unhelpful thinking styles are contributing to your self-sabotage. These automatic thoughts, or cognitive distortions, can create considerable pain. CBT therapy or CBT counselling helps to identify unhelpful thinking habits and uses CBT exercises and cognitive restructuring to help you change unhelpful thinking styles. Unhelpful thinking styles include labeling, emotional reasoning, catastrophizing, personalizing, mind reading and mental filter. This video will help you to challenge negative self-talk, self-sabotaging thoughts and identify unhelpful thinking patterns. This, in turn, will help you stop self-sabotaging behavior!

And think twice before you let yourself get mangled by the CBT hamburger machine, are you an actual hamburger and are your state of mind simply a thing to fix and replace, or is there something else going on.

@@srolesen tf does this even mean

    • @srolesen
      @srolesen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@pokemongurlz Means CBT is designed to be convincing at the cost of accuracy, and there is a hamburger like quality to it, the therapist will frequently just close their eyes and chuck all the problems into the machine, more invested in churning out product and measuring success as "% of problems solved" with 0 understanding that some problems are simply not suitable for that hamburger machine and require a deeper level of understanding.
I think CBT is fundamentally a good approach to many issues and that hamburgers are fine on occasion, but I also think that there is a pervasive lack of willingness in both industries for the machine operator to stop and think twice before mashing something through that meatgrinder that does not belong there.

    Thank you. Great reminders!
My trauma therapist used EMDR and CBT therapies. What you outline is the kind of thing she would have me practice for “homework”, between sessions.
The awareness of these various patterns of thought makes our self-talk less critical. That way, we can be the person who says to ourselves: “Would I say that to a loved one?”
It’s taken a lot of practice to come to a place of self-kindness. So nice to hear gentle, kind words in my self-talk, instead of the harsh ones I used to say to me.
    Blessings!🤓

I think being a friend of myself is a very powerful concept, as well as the "self-sabotage" one that is more tricky because the sabotage looks like a solution instead of the cause of the problem. I worked on it - without a strong consistency but with results - for about four years. Yet, the path is long, the tunnel is brighter but not ended. Thank you very much doctor Heffernan for putting these concepts in such a clear way, so that they are immediately applicable for all of us! I'm already using the cbt log and reviewing all my homework on inner dialogue in light of the six styles you explained so well.

I totally believe being a friend to yourself and self love is the first and most important step. I have to say that in my experiences with some of this , if I asked my boss if everything is ok when he walks by and says nothing in a crappy mood way he would instantly be offended, because I tried this and learned to just keep my mouth shut. it only makes things worse because toxic situations in a work place are ever present as a reflection of the state of general mental health in society. so ideally I agree with your approach but when you have been through people using and abusing you for years out of their own selfishness and a lack of knowing how to stand up for yourself even when it means offending your boss or parents or whatever it makes it hard to have faith in people that they would even care about what I have to say or how I feel. its frustrating to me trying to deal with the hatefulness and selfishness i encounter .

Positive self talk I have practice my whole life and my experiences only reinforce this practice.
I'm a mother and I practice this with my children....6 and 4....I hope this helps them when they I bigger.

Thank you very much for this instructive video I made really tired from automatic negative thoughts and catastrophic cbt inherited from my narcissistic crazy toxic sadistic father who enjoyed catastrophasing and blaming us for nothing and stupid things and saying that we Nell cause his death he really damaged our brain pattern of thinking and conceiving the world. Nd I feel really tired of trying to fix it but I still trying because I want to get better and get the wonderful life I deserve. All those who struggled with childhood trauma and did make it should be considered heroes because the damages are really deep and take lots of work and discipline and time to deal with them so I totally understand when you say it’s not easy but it worth it. No child in the world deserves to go through the craziness mess up fathers. It’s a real crime against humanity. I wish everyone lots of happiness and success

I am suffering the consequences of ptsd... In this time, from time to time... A totally heavy emotion comes out of nowhere(apparently, now we know it comes from past trauma and abuse)... And it s so intense as if it doesn t let me breath for the next minute... Before would be worse... Now getting better, simply by realizing it is a huge step... Soo intense and chronic... Wow, thank you, Barbara!

Great context, soothing words for the soul. There’s on line narratives of blaming and damning others nowadays. Your videos are great. TY

I am definitely in a much better place in terms of been my own best friend. I am.most definitely falling in love with myself and it's quite sweet for me. Saying that I most likely would benefit and be even more inspired by doing some CBT for sure.

I have {sadly), had to watch perhaps 100 TH-cam shrinks before coming here. Without having gone through a lot of your videos, I have to say that I just love your way of explaining these things as if you are a good friend or mother talking to her bestie or kid. I really appreciate it. There is an Aussie woman on Psych Central who also talks with her hands and has this gift of conveying their knowledge as if there were, you know, a human.

This was very helpful. In having a few days of feeling quite down at times, a few of these videos have helped identify where my thoughts are. Now I can start changing the response.

Thanks for this video you are so right in the thoughts I have and how easy it is to think it will go wrong. I think and find a solution but then a new bad thought will find another way in. But you just got me to see it in a different way. Thank you so much.
