Stop Anxiety by Changing Negative Thoughts | CALM-Logic

  • Why do I feel anxious around other people and think that they don’t like me? Our thoughts, especially our self critical thoughts, negatively influence our moods and behaviors.
    How we interpret the World around us, including other people’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors can make us anxious and depressed. What if I told you that by simply changing your interpretation, you could reduce your anxiety and improve your mood?
    That is exactly what Cognitive Restructuring, a CBT Technique accomplishes. In this video I introduce you to Cognitive Restructuring. A CBT Technique that involves identifying and labeling your own cognitive distortions and then replacing them with more helpful position thoughts. The results are decreased overall anxiety and an improved mood.
    This is the first Cognitive Behavior Therapy technique in the Logic section of my CALM system for treating Anxiety Disorders. In my previous video, I explained when to use CBT (for Cortex based anxiety) and when not to use CBT (for amygdala based anxiety). That information is important. If you missed that video, you can watch it here
    • CBT: When to Use It |C... .
    Only when you learn to recognize the different cognitive distortions that you use regularly, can you learn to replace them, thereby decreasing your anxiety.
    Remember to subscribe so you can follow along as we continue to dive deeper into the Logic series and learn more CBT and DBT techniques to reduce anxiety.

    Man this made me want to cry because I’ve been feeling most of all of these:(
    It’s so hard to try to get out of the negative thoughts. Every time I try to the negative thoughts just keep on returning and returning making me feel helpless that I’m never going to get better. I have to really work on this so my mind can finally believe that I will get better slowly over time. I hate it when I actually have a small split second of a positive thought but it goes away quickly and I’m filed with sadness, despair, doom, panic and anxiety once again:(

      I loved your comment because I can see how hard you are working on it. You have to remember that It took you years practice to develop the negative thoughts , and it will take some time to create new neuro pathways for more helpful and positive thoughts. Keep diligent at noticing when you just had a negative thought. Write it down. Label what kind of negative thought it was, and then come up with something a little more positive to say back to yourself. Eventually, that process will become more automatic.You don’t have to believe the positive thoughts, just say them to yourself. It is also helpful to add in some other techniques like 5 min of breath focused meditation and exercise. You may want to check out my playlist page and watch the Accepting Anxiety series too. Wishing you the best.

      Paige Pradko LPC NCC Thank you❤️
      I really loved what you wrote because it’s so hard to start thinking positive when all the negative thoughts just never wants to go away:(
      That’s actually not a bad idea because if I start to write these thoughts down I know it will be a lot as my head is filled with 99% negative thoughts:( But hey writing out these thoughts I can also do what you say and right down positive thoughts along them. I have to keep at it so slowly I can train my mind to think of the better thoughts more than the negative thoughts.
      Honestly this is will be really hard to do but I know I have to do this so I can get better and combine that with meditation and many other things too:)
      Sure silk make sure to check out your accepting anxiety series❤️

      Sometimes our negative thoughts can feel like they have actually happened, and of course, that makes our anxiety worse. I am working on a video that will go live in 2 weeks that will really help you. I wish I could share it with you today. Try your best to allow and accept the anxiety and simply label your thoughts, “I am having an anxious thought” or “I am fortune telling”. Then, connect to the present moment by transferring your attention to what you see, hear, feel around you. Here is an I. A.M. technique that helps people with anxiety and OCD. th-cam.com/video/c-HKZNh88dQ/w-d-xo.html

    I'm always stunned by the illogic that equates 'negative' thoughts with 'faulty' thoughts. Since we live in a chaotic world racing towards disaster, most of our negative thoughts are correct.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with your point. Cognitive Behavior Therapy has a core theory....that our thoughts influence our emotions and mood, which then influence our behaviors. It is not necessarily about what is actually true or not. According to the theory, it is about changing their mood and behaviors. CBT is a theory as nihilism is more of a philosophy. But, CBT does use the language of faulty thoughts and negative thoughts. I tend to think of thoughts as mental events with no link to truth at all. I am a proponent for what ever helps someone. What helps one person may not be the cup of tea for the next. Thank you for your comment.

  • @rudypacheco91

    When I feel anxiety or anxious thoughts I realize, those thoughts are not me or you!
    They are merely thoughts that quickly come but when you realize nobody knows and nobody cares but your God, so quit beating yourself up because you are a new creation, then affirm yourself with the truth that I am loved I am intelligent and I am understood, I am smart and righteous even when I don’t “behave” like I am righteous but I am!
    I have practiced these truths for 7 years and its worked out pretty well so far, I don’t have shame to be myself especially around people whom don’t judge me like condemning me but accept that I’ll screw up because we all do. Just do your best and forget what people or even your own inner critic says

    Dr., you mention how we distort but please give examples as to how to flip the script in our minds. How do we change the thoughts to more positive ones.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your question. I do not actually work on changing people’s thoughts. I help them create a narrative that is more helpful and accepting and one that helps to move them towards their valued behaviors. For example if someone wanted to date, yet felt like they were scared of being rejected. I might help them create a narrative about valuing relationships and being willing to try even if it meant that someone might reject them. And even feel proud of themselves for doing difficult things and taking that risk of putting themselves out there. I also believe that every situation has several ways to look at that situation and how we choose to story or narrate a situation directly affects our mood.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy

      Once you identify a distorted thought when you are actually having the thought, be sure to label it. "Oh, I am mind-reading again. Or, I am fortune telling again." Then, have some phrases ready to say to yourself. "I do not have any evidence that people don't like me. What is not to like." Or, "I am blowing up the negative again. I can get through this. It is never as bad as I believe as it is going to be." Talk back to these thoughts every time you have them with a more helpful, realistic thought. It takes time, but the practice will help you. Thank you for your question.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is such a great question. Ultimately, I support anything that works. I teach several different techniques and encourage my clients to experiment and see which method works best for them. If someone has a negative thought like, “people don’t like me” or “I don’t measure up”, I encourage clients to use CBT and question that thought and create a more helpful phrase that feels better. If my client has OCD and has an intrusive, obsessive thought that creates anxiety, I never encourage negotiating with that thought with CBT. That can actually cause the thought to persist. In that situation, we label the thought as an OCD thought, and let time pass until the anxiety goes down. I hope that comparison helps.

    Are your techniques and advice the same for anxiety related to menopause anxiety? I get it morning and when i go to sleep. But it started during this pandemic.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have seen an increase in anxiety during the pandemic for many people. I believe all of the fearful messages we are hearing combined with social isolation is causing more activation in our limbic system, specifically our amygdalas, creating more anxiety symptoms. I suggest practicing several daily rituals including 5 minutes of breath focused or guided meditation first thing in the am, and later before bedtime, square breathing for 1-2 minutes when you wake, and when you lay down for sleep, and some kind of exercise, even a walk or yoga, once a day. You can find videos for these techniques on my playlist page, under the description of Calm Your Body Techniques. These techniques are also helpful for menopause anxiety, because they all center on calming the body. Thank you for your comments.

    Going thru this with my girlfriend right now. How do i get her to accept that she has generalised anxiety disorder without sounding too blamy? How can i get her to be comfortable with sharing her thoughts? Her negative thinking pattern is putting our relationship under a lot of unnecessary pressure.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  ปีที่แล้ว

      This is difficult to do without sounding a bit like lecturing her. I wonder if giving her an example of an unpleasant thought that you have had before and even though you had the thought, you didn’t give it much merit because it was only a thought. People with anxiety tend to have loads of “what-if” type thoughts or negative,myself-defeating thoughts. And, unfortunately, if one believes their thoughts and gives them significance, it can lead to depression. Sometimes, if a person has lots of negative thoughts, I try to see if there is a general theme. Something like, “things never work out for me”, or “people don’t like me”, or “I’m not good enough”. In cases like that, there are deeper issues at hand that need to be identified and worked on. Generalized anxiety typically involves worries about everything and not specific to a particular theme. It is almost like if they didn’t worry and ruminate, they aren’t trying hard enough. It becomes a coping mechanism for them.

    Hi! Is OBE a part of depersonalisation? Is it normal to feel it when having an anxiety attack? Or is it just an OCD thought?

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy
      @PaigePradkoTherapy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, I am not able to comment specifically about your situation without knowing a full history. However, out of body experiences can be a symptom of disassociation or depersonalization. It can be caused from a state of anxiety where instead of fight or flight, the vagus nerve causes a “freeze” or a shut down state. Sometimes moving your physical body in yoga or going on a walk or a jog can help bring you out of this state. Polyvagal Theory explains more about what happens in the brain during dissociation and what you can do about it, if you would like to learn more.

      It seems like you may be talking about the power of attraction. What we give our attention to will grow. You also may be talking about creating our own reality. If we think people do not like us, and then we behave that way by lowering our eyes and avoiding them....we will create a scenario where people will not approach us or talk to us.

    • @PaigePradkoTherapy

      You can identify your negative thoughts and write them down. Then identify how you are distorting them, and create more helpful thoughts as I doin the video. If your thoughts are more obsessive and intrusive in nature and revolve around specific themes, you will have to use ERP therapy. You can find those videos in my OCD and Exposure Playlists.

      Hi Jaime. This is a video about cognitive restructuring, a cognitive therapy technique. This technique is useful when someone has negative thoughts, and those thoughts cause them anxiety. This is not a video if someone is traumatized and emotionally triggered by their past. I am sorry that you did not like the video. It is not my favorite technique or video, but it is useful for some people.
