Nebelhorn - Germany's hardest climb!

  • Sometimes you stumble upon a climb that's so ridiculously steep, so menacingly hard and yet so incredibly beautiful all at the same time that it makes you wonder if it's actually real, or just a bad nightmare. That's exactly what happened at the tail end of summer when exploring the Bavarian Alps in Germany. Up until the start of the trip I didn't even know this climb existed, but after a few attempts I can now tell you (hand on fiercely beating heart) Nebelhorn is like nothing else on the planet with loose and sketchy asphalt at best, wickedly steep gradients above 35% and views that keep you pushing on despite the unfathomable madness of the road itself. Touted as Germany's hardest, it's easily up there with the very hardest climbs in the world and definitely the toughest climb I've ever attempted. What. A. Legend!
    Start: Oberstdorf
    Length: 9.9 km
    Summit: 2,224 m
    Elevation Gain: 1,401 m
    Average Gradient: 14.2%
    Max Gradient: 35%
    As I put this video together I was reminded at just what an achievement it was to make it to the summit. The ride itself was an incredible challenge, but the nature of self filming and trying to capture it on my own at each stage made it the journey even more rewarding. The silence and serenity at the summit was pure life in a moment, something that I'll be grateful to have experienced for a long time to come.
    While funding for these projects remains a challenge special thanks to Wahoo, Exposure Lights Ultimate components for throwing some pennies into the pot to help make it happen.

      Thank you soooooooo much. Really, can’t express my appreciation enough towards your words. For this video I filmed and edited everything on my own. The climb itself was absolutely monstrous but what I was most proud about was making my way up step by step and capturing each moment, from static shots to drone, and then trying to sum up the experience in a way that makes it worth watching. Really glad you enjoyed it. Thank you 🙏🏻

It's 7km long, gradient about 12% and it is really beautiful but highly exhausting. The road is in acceptable condition, mostly made of tarmac, there is no gravel. I did the exact same route on foot with my brother in september of last year. We started from oberstdorf at 9:40 in the morning, and we arrived at the summit 4 hours later. 1 hour of that in total was made up of us sitting around catching our breath. Even on foot the steepest sections where you are going up on both gravel and tarmac were difficult to navigate because every time you put your weight on the back foot to step forward it would slip on the rocks. At some points I think we were questioning why we didn't just take the cable car up, but finally standing below the summit cross, taking in the view and knowing that we were one of the few people there who had actually walked up the entire way was oh so worth it :) We thought about walking down again, but with how steep some of those sections were and with the gravel we were sure that we were going to take a bad fall on the way down so we opted to take the cable car, which was 28€ (!) per person, even though we both already got the students discount, which I thought was a very steep price (haha). I think it's an insane idea to try and go up the Nebelhorn with a bicycle and I definitely would've thought it to be impossible if I hadn't seen this video, amazing work!

      @TheColCollective  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for sharing your journey! Big respect!! Very sensible taking the cable car down. I saw many hikers slipping over as they descended, it’s so loose and easy to lose one’s footing. By the time I finished it was dark so I had to navigate the descent by head torch. Was very relived to make it down ok. What an adventure!!!! 😊

      Going down is even worse, I would not recommend. Did it twice. Fortunately, there are various beautiful hiking trails to get up there and back down again.

    • @GatlingJackDE
      @GatlingJackDE 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @traumiweber6600 definitely, I went uphill by bike last summer and wanted to go downhill by cable car, but it's not allowed to take a bike within the cable car. It was quite horrifying to constantly having to apply the breaks, but not so strong that the bike gets into slipping over all the loose gravel under the chairlift above the traverse.
      In my opinion the section between 1500 and 1932m is more a hiking trail, which can be "rode" on a bike by a "stop-and-go" method.
      The most fun is when people look for the route in komoot, komoot lists that section as 100% tarmac. There have been people which showed up at the start of the section with a road or a gravelbike and instantly regretted it, it's impossible to get over the loose gravel with road or gravel tires let alone the gear ratios of road bikes.

    I know that route, cause I rode it myself last summer.
    To put some water into the wine of the video here.
    I see a break after you passed the traverse in the middle of the serpentine section.
    It's also not sure if you had to get off the bike in the only gravel parts of the way.
    Multiple turns were shot by an outside camera which seems to be moved each shot.
    Meaning the rider must make additional breaks every time he moved the outside camera
    to different turns.
    To conclude:
    That you "made" that route at all in the first place is an achievement, but it's not a so-called
    "red-point completion".
    Only a few riders in comparison have made that route by bike, but it's important to mention
    that the route is including this video here only "achieved" with multiple breaks and getting off the saddle.
    It's an "achievement" but not that kind of an "achievement" it is made here in the describing text of this video.
    It's still not proven that someone made the ascent
    without ANY break
    from 1540m (just before the turn to the 35% ascent beside the mountain creek) all the way up to 1932m (cable car station).
    Cable Car: bikes are NOT allowed, neither in uphill direction nor in downhill direction. I wanted to take the cable car downhill after I made it uphill with my bike. They said "not allowed".
    In my opion the route doesn't qualify for a "nonstop bikeroute".
    In the German speaking bike community it's mainly seen as a "stop-and-go" route which doesn't qualify because it's not possible to make it without any break or stop in it.
    Some years ago there were a few comments by hotshots, that "you could cycle up the section with roadbike gear ratios without any break" 😂, which of course were the most laughable comments about that section and if it qualifies as a "nonstop biking route".
    I only can say that it's not fun in any case to ride that section uphill, it's torture.
    The only way one can prove he or she made it without ANY break would be a completely uncut video from 1540m to the 1932m showing a person cycling uphill without any kind of getting off the bike, no matter if it's caused by loosing grip within the gravel or sheer exhaustion.
    Up to this point in time such a proving video doesn't exist in TH-cam.
    Therefore those two top climbing points of Germany which have been proved to be makeable without any kind of getting off the bike are:
    Osterfelderkopf 2032m by mountainbike and
    Alpe Schlappold 1740m by roadbike

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Thanks so much for the comments and valuable feedback, especially regarding bikes not being allowed on the cable car. I had no choice on the day as it was deserted at the summit and the cable car had stopped for the day so only one way down…..by bike.
      With regards to riding the serpentine section to Hofatsblick without stopping, prior to filming this video I made two attempts to familiarise myself with the climb. The first was on my gravel bike with 33x36 as the lowest gear. I was grinding such a low cadence at times it was faster to walk 😅.
      My second attempt was on my mountain bike with 52t rear cassette so a much lower gear which is highly, highly, recommended. I remember on that attempt riding the steepest sections up to Hofatsblick (1932m) without dismounting. This is where most riders finish the ascent but I continued up to the summit at 2224m. This last section is pretty rough in places but still rideable. I remember clearing all the steepest sections without dismounting but on an “easier” section (I put that in inverted commas as it was still a hard section) I lost traction and had to put a foot down. Such a shame as I’d hoped to ride the whole thing but I wasn’t going to go back to attempt it again at full speed (I was chasing the KOM on that attempt). So although I put a foot down in the section from Hofatsblick to the summit I know it’s possible to ride it all with the right gearing, pace, legs and a bit of good luck!
      The third ascent was for the video. I filmed everything solo, so had to stop multiple times to capture each shot, drone, static and POV shots. It’s why I arrived at sunset, self filming takes a very long time and riding up with a bag full of cameras and equipment was a lot harder than my Strava attempt despite taking about 6 hours longer! 😅
      An absolute beast of a climb! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did! 💪🏼

    • @GatlingJackDE
      @GatlingJackDE 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheColCollective Ah okay, I see now how the video was made in that style.
      So you're 2nd attempt with 52t cassette mountainbike is definitely an EPIC and very special achievement 🙌👍
      I started with a 51t shimano XT cassette hardtail. I had to take like four breaks within the serpentine section. I wasn't fit enough to clear it without them and in hindsight I had not the right fitting tires. I had crossbike like tires, which weren't "full" mountainbike tires. I'm thinking about trying it again sometime in the future, but that would require me a kind of specific practice for that section. With my "regular" training routines I wouldn't be fit enough to make it without several breaks and I underestimated the huge and constant amount of gravel in the upper section.
      All in all I found it to be a very exciting experience. But totally different from "classic" and well-known biking routes in the alps.
      It's just not a "pleasure ride" where you kind of moderately cranking uphill while looking to the side easily and enjoying nature.
      I wouldn't recommend the route at all if someone is looking for just such a classic and well-makeable route.
      In this sense I don't see it as a regular "biking route" rather a specific and extreme challenge in uphill bike climbing.
      In comparison with other extreme uphill routes from other youtube videos my guess is that it could be arguably the most difficult one, because of the combination of extreme steepness and the extensive gravel which gets more and more going uphill to the cable car station.
      Of course there are a few other extreme steep ramp routes, but as far as I know not combined with such a lot of gravel on the surface.
      Meaning standing up and cranking is impossible on most of the serpentine section.
