Garden Snake SCULPTING - ZBrushCore SpeedSculpt

  • I want to try practicing more realistic-type styles. So since I'm always drawing things with scales anyway, I've started with a common Garden Snake. I went for a snake as they have a nice, simplistic style to their scales; very smooth and uniform, so not massively 3D scales, but still noticeable depth and polish. My original go-to choice for a crocodile, but I decided that would be a bit too advanced for what I am trying to learn and accomplish here.

    This is amazingly well done! I never realized the scales formed so specifically. Just goes to show just how intricate and beautiful nature is, even in something a simple and seemingly insignificant as a garden snake. It may seem like I’m always pouring on the praise when I comment on a video, but that’s just because I’m always so impressed! I wish I had your skill Becca, I really do.

      Skill is built, it’s about pushing as far as you can! She practiced a lot obviously! You can too. it’s also about paying close attention to reference and being crazy enough to go the extra mile to sculpt the scales by hand, that what takes this sculpt to the next level. Absolute Dedication is what differentiates the best from the mediocre (and a ton of practice which is practically absolute dedication).

    Great job mate. Your work makes me love sculpting more.
    Love this style too, 'cause I usually try to make accurate 3D sculpt for 3D printing in free time after studying.
    I'm more of hard surface vehicles and stuff but I want to learn organic things like human and animals.

    I really like how accurate the sculpt is, everything from the shape of the scales, the jaw, the eyes. But there is just one thing missing that I wanna point out. The smaller scales on the back of a garter snake are rough, meaning the scales have a ridge in the middle. Don't know if that's something you intentionally left out or just missed, but I felt like it could be something to look out for if you decide to sculpt more snakes and if you really want to keep them as accurate as possible.
    Take care and have a nice day!

    If you do another snake do a cobra! or a Fer de lance! Both are incredibly venomous! very few people survive a bite from the Fer de lance, one of those few was a girl who was on her schools swim team and very athletic. But after the bite she suffers from mental disabilities and cant compete any more.

    Making a snake
    What people expect:
    Step 1: Make tube
    Step 2: Done
    Reality:
    3 hours of sculpting, making each individual scale, mapping the planes of the face, specific angles, etc etc

    • @DarkEdgeTV
      @DarkEdgeTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! That was by using the Clay Polish tool - I honestly can't explain the process as it's very trial-and-error, but essentially some settings will automatically create a mask. I recommend just playing with it :D

  • @RugnirSvenstarr

    I'm fascinated to know whether you are working from photographs or if you're so familiar with reptiles you make up a lot of the details - I guess it's some mixture of both, but nonetheless some of the intricate details fascinates me

    • @DarkEdgeTV
      @DarkEdgeTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely a lot of photograph references for this! I do typically go by imagination, but I was purposefully going for realism here, so I was looking at photos constantly :)

    how did you create a mask automatically between the snake's scales?

    • @DarkEdgeTV
      @DarkEdgeTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The "automatic mask" is an unintended result of using the ClayPolish tool - I recommend really having an indepth play around with the tool, and take note of how it creates a mask and what you can do with it. Truth be told the way I used it was entirely just improvised and a happy accident, but defo something useful to take advantage of

    • @DarkEdgeTV
      @DarkEdgeTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fish, I'll admit I'm not very interested in them. Maybe some bright and colourful ones. But Mammals, I really do want to tackle those, however my version of ZBrush does not include an AMAZING tool that allows me to make fur properly, so at best I can only do very cartoony molds of "fur". Fine for typical models, but not acceptable if I'm attempting to do realistic stuff. If I ever manage to get the full version of ZBrush4R7, you can expect me to make lots more mammals!
