- Ian Royle is in Austria reviewing the 1998 Vauxhall Astra, and seeing if it can match up against it's main competitors in the market. The updated Astra has had a lot of improvements in terms of quality and performance, Ian takes it for a spin to see how it handles, as well as seeing how practical it is.

Watching this in 2022 and the Astra has aged the best.
I have the astra :) really nice car which gives a good ride, mines from 2004 and even 14 years on its still holds up against todays cars
That's awesome. Is my absolute favourite Astra especially the dark blue/navy colour is awesome

These were and still are to an extent fantastic cars. The handling is sublime, they
really hold the read. Also, they are pleasure to drive and have good performance
for most engines. The 1.7 isuzu diesel was adequate. They even had excellent results
in safety tests. The only drawback for me was the poor fuel economy. I had 2
1.6 16v variants and on a long trip I used to get 37MPG. With mixed driving,
but no motorways I was getting 22 mpg. I even drove it gently once to see
its potential and it was still something like 25 mpg with mixed driving. They
are still worth buying given how cheap you can get a top of the range low
mileage example, but avoid the non ABS models because the brakes are
rubbish on those.
well, u get a worst fuel economy that anyone can posibly have with that car..

why would they have bothered taking a british car to austria. the hassle of putting the stickers on the lights then talk about how it was made for british roads.

Never liked the Focus MK1 looks, personal taste ofc. I like the looks of the Golf IV, but older VW's tend to have a spongy ride when they get older, also they're more expensive nowadays dispite having quality issues. So I've gone for an Astra G and like it so far.

Ive just bought one as i hate modern day cars full shit nasty electronics & so i bought a 2001 sstra g which is very reliable & bought for £650 but the basted cost £290 to tax it
Its reliable which is what I wanted but would love a mk3 cortina.
Car still has the original cassette radio.
The styling of the dash was so generic and dull in comparison to the curvy and interesting dash of the previous model, what a shame.
