    10 February’s ago we did the route from Euston to Holyhead to Dublin, but not overnight. Back then we did find a website to book both tickets at the same time. Though we had to change operators at Holyhead because the Irish Sea Ferries were not running that day. Swapped to Stena at no charge. Seas were a bit too rough going for my wife unfortunately, but you can’t predict the weather. We did not like that the only option out of the port was a bus operated by Stena for €5 each and we had to hike to our hotel from a random spot near Trinity College after a long day of travel.

    Earlier today I watched Steve Marsh’s video of his Rome - Barcelona trip with Grimaldi Line. The contrast between that and Stena is incredible. Stena looked like a service that would be a pleasure to take. The Grimaldi service looked just awful. As for the trains, it seems like another own goal by those in charge of rolling stock procurement for the British operating companies. Why on earth do they think hard seats are what the travelling public want on long services? I’ve sampled the ‘new’ standard class seats on the refurbished Pendolinos and after an hour or so my arse was complaining so much I was wishing I was still on the Class 380 commuter train that had got me to Glasgow Central in the first place.

    The Birkenhead/Belfast overnight Ferry has been my favourite new discovery this year. Glad I had a cabin. But it's lovely onboard. Think Stena could do something with a shuttle from Liverpool to the port. But apart from that, it's fab

  • @EuroDC1990
    @EuroDC1990 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +12

    Definitely with you on the 807s, they're more light and airy than the 390 Pendolinos but they've no sense of warmth or ambience. All in all though between that, the lower speed and the shorter length they seem to be a completely misguided decision.
    I get that the idea had been to run the shorter trains more frequently but that's been tried so many times before and never works. We keep being told that there's staff shortages and that we can't run more trains on the existing infrastructure so it's about time we made sure every train we run is as long as can be to increase capacity as best we can in the short term.
    The ferry on the other hand, those ferries are absolutely fantastic. Excellent atmosphere, loads of space, plenty of options for every budget. I only wish more routes existed. I'd love to see overnight ferry routes to Cobh or even to Galway.

      They were designed to replace the Voyagers on London - North Wales. They're designed for 125 mph, it's only because they're not fitted with tilt that they can't use that speed on some parts of the route where Pendos can

    • @EuroDC1990
      @EuroDC1990 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @AndreiTupolev It's the 5 carriage class 805s which are to replace the voyagers on the Holyhead route (also a poor replacement in my opinion but not a downgrade in capacity thankfully). The 7 carriage 807s are to replace 9/11 carriage Pendolinos on the Liverpool route.
      Add to that the lower speed (regardless of cause) and much worse onboard experience and you've got a far inferior product.

      They’re replacing Pendolinos on the Liverpool route, which has never seen Voyagers. The 807 is a fully electric train and is not (in the strictest sense!) a Voyager replacement. The 805 is a bimode and is what you’re thinking of in terms of replacing the 221s!

Trains in china rattle along at 345kmh and you barely feel it moving. Wide comfortable reclining seats. 36 platform mega stations. Food options everywhere including on board. Yes I know it's Victorian legacy infrastructure in UK. But it tells you where the future is. Not in the land of toy trains. If you're into trains go to China for a trip. Mind-blowing investment in infrastructure.

    Trains in the UK are an absolute mess, and it’s such a shame. Years of overpriced tickets, awful service, and uncomfortable trains have really taken their toll. No wonder they’re often empty-flying is cheaper, and almost anything else is a better, more affordable option.
    I’ve taken trains all over the world, and it’s shocking how much better they are pretty much everywhere else. In most developed countries-and even in parts of the developing world-trains are cheaper, more reliable, and something you actually want to use. How did we let things get this bad in the UK? Oh wait…

    So is there no ‘rail & sail’ ticket option, as there is for travel to the Isle of Man via train and ferry on a combined ticket?
    The Isle of Man can’t be the only destination that does these rail and sail tickets, is it?

    I wish I had more reasons to sail on Stena! Maybe I could convince my girlfriend for road trips in Ireland...!
    Stena are by far my second favourite transportation method after Virgin Atlantic. Their super friendly staff, amazing ships like Edda, Embla and Adventurer are always clean and fresh.
    They look out for those with hidden disabilities like myself and make travel super easy. I always feel relaxed sailing with them and even considered changing careers!
    Thank you for an amazing video Paul and I'm sure Stena Line will be very happy to watch it as well!

    I do 5 hours door to door from London to Northern Ireland by plane pretty frequently. Can’t see the point in taking a ferry unless you’re taking a car.

    What? Not taking the coach to Stranrear and crossing to Larne?
    Perhaps that should be the return route.
    Given that I can fly, return, for considerably less than the single ferry fare is also a significant factor in deciding how to travel.
    I'm currently sitting in the countryside near Antrim remembering why I stopped using the ferries years ago.

      Cairnryan, not Stranraer.
      All ferries now leave from Cairnryan.

    The Swedish meatballs look like reason enough to take the ferry! Irn Bru is the elixir of eternal youth - it's a natural embalming agent.
    We took the ferry from Bootle to Dublin when I was around 7 or so. My mum, my brother and I got seasick, my brother ended up with sick all over his shoes and my parents said Never again. I have a friend who recently moved to Belfast - I might give the ferry a go when it's time to visit. It looks loads better than the HMS Chunder I took to Dublin as a little girl.

    If you can face an early start from Euston ( approx 8.30 am)go via Holyhead to Dublin Approx £65..and then catch the Belfast train ( + Euros) to Ulster's recently opened Belfast Central. About 14hrs. 6am disembarkation leaves you in a large industrial estate outside a city that is still shut . Old ferries took you into the centre at Donegal Quay.

    Hold on, you get proper hot breakfasts served on proper plates, real cutlery, cups, glasses with LNER - certainly between Inverness and Edinburgh. And a hot meal again served on proper plates, cutlery, glasses and cups coming back up to Inverness. The First Class is extremely popular with people living in and around Inverness for a day out in Edinburgh mostly due to the complimentary hot food, snacks, hot drinks, cold drinks (including alcohol). I have done that many times and it is well worth the money when you include the meals.

    I used to watch the trains whizzing past at Harrow & Wealdstone Station when I was a kid. You could enter the station platforms those days as there were no tickets barriers in the late 80's.

    Hi Paul another great review. So Avanti are replacing reclining seats in 1st and Standard Premier? Yet another thumbs down for them. Would welcome more detail if this is going to spread to the rest of their fleet. At full price these tickets are not cheap!! £540 Manchester to Euston. Thanks.

      @AnyoneSeenMikeHunt 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'd never buy full price tickets. I'm seeing Avanti Advance Single fares Manchester Piccadilly - London Euston on C49475 for only £53. Which is cheap to travel 220 miles in a new multi million dollar train really.

    I did this trip in reverse back in May, with the balcony double cabin, worth it for the giant round porthole and comfy chairs alone. So nice that we didn’t leave the room as we’d eaten in Belfast, so never saw the rest of the ship, next time for sure! The amenities are much the same, glad you got those free biscuits in the superior cabin too, they were amazing!
