    Those GM 2.4s,I now take off the oil pan and take it apart finding the oil pump screen plugged up with pieces of the broken timing chain guides during timing chain replacement.

      Oh yeah, that is the next most common issue with them. Especially if not maintained well or with high miles.
      They’ll usually be accompanied by cam timing codes and hard starts. If doing a chain, gather the parts from the pan for sure!

    As well as being good entertainment, there's always something valuable to be learned here. But you are also doing a terrific job of showing the masses that there are excellent mechanics out there who are proud of the work they do and can be trusted to provide an honest diagnosis.

    I appreciate your simplistic diagnostic approach. You rarely pull out the mini scope. The scan tool, DVM and test light are your main diagnostic tools. Eric O, on occasion, uses the Pico scope. I don't think Rainman Ray even owns a scope as I've never seen him use one. I've been trying to up my electrical diagnostic skills. When watching the guys who heavily use the scope, I get lost. All I see are a bunch of squiggly lines. I wouldn't even know where to begin deciphering the patterns. I have learned quite a bit from your videos Jimmy. Your efforts are appreciated!
    When the Pontiac Aztec hit the market, I thought it was the ugliest vehicle on the road. The bright yellow ones really stuck out like a sore thumb! 🤣🤣

      The reason Eric doesn't bust out a scope often unless it's to help demonstrate on camera is because he knows those waveforms(squiggly lines) can be very misleading and subjective in interpretation. For example there's been several times where I've seen a faulty fuel injector read "perfectly" on a scope, even though it had clearly mechanically malfunctioned. A scope can be a very useful(and expensive) tool but it's not something you should rely on with regularity, I see a lot of young guys making that mistake today.

    Improvise adapt and overcome in the marine world there is a lot of diag with a scan tool DVOM and test light and trying a test part when you can no scope for an outboard engine so heck ya try the test part as long as you do some testing first just don’t load up the shotgun first with your eyes closed and see what happens 😂

    Quickest test for me on those when it has a circuit code is go right to the solenoid, ohm test it, those solenoids (I have done hundreds) should be 8 to 13 ohms. When they fail, they go spectacularly into the kilo or mega ohms. Saves time from pulling them out. I always do an oil change with them as well cause it's rare one comes out with debris on it.

      Thanks for the info, it is almost always the solenoid, but I have seen several with metal in the screens. Luckily not on the last few.

    I am not on flat rate... salary. I wrench at a shop that since its origin in '97 has been known as a troubleshooting shop. I use a scope and other fancy and fun diagnostic tools on a pretty regular basis. But there is NOTHING wrong with your approach to the problem on this one Jimmy! If you can keep it low-tech and isolate the problem just the same or faster, then that's the way to do it. That's my 2 cents anyway.

      I was shocked to see that, he left Ford, said he was a partner at an independent shop, now left that to work for VW? Not sure what’s going on now really. 🙃

    While addressing the timing code you turned on the air conditioning because it was,"four, or five thousand percent humidity". It sounds like you're going to need some SCUBA gear to work in that shop. Good call on checking the sensor by first using a known good part from your tool box; sign of a pro.

    Silly question I don’t work at a shop I just do my own work as a hobby but have blue tooth scan code, but what is happening when you send a report on your scan tool? Is that to the shop for their records?

      Yes, I send it to have it recorded for our files and saved for future reference.

    save the customer some cash and make the diagnostic afordable 👍 the only people who have the time to go threw all the motions are retired people like me a scan tool in one and a 🍺 in the other 😂. thanks for the content, jimmy! 🔧🔩🪛 !
