  • 8000lb Automobile Lift Catastrophically Fails (Cable Snaps) with a Jeep Grand Cherokee
The 8000 capacity two post automotive lift failed catastrophically while lifting a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 V8 Engine. The lift's balancing cable snapped when the lift reached the top! Thankfully the hydraulic pressure in the two lift cylinders held the Jeep long enough for it to be supported by jack stands for safety until a solution can be reached! Watch until the end screen for the part 1.5 link!

its not unusual for a mechanic to really get into one or 2 of their own projects, sometimes even 3 or maybe 4 if its something thats kind of out there, but after that, yeah it works ok so i'll take care of it later,...wife or girlfriend projects don't count, and really not work related stuff either.

The winch cable on that tow truck has a hook on it that is put on with a loop in the cable and the clamp on that cable is installed backwards. Not only should there be at least two clamps on it, the saddle on the clamp has to be on the live side of the cable. It currently has the saddle on the dead side of the cable. The way you remember that is you do not put the saddle on a dead horse. That cable is ripe for failing.

@@rodneycaupp5962It’s a rotary lift. The cables are manufactured in China. They suck. He needs to inspect them on a regular basis and NEVER bring the lift to a position in which the cables are being fully stressed. I’ve been selling, installing and repairing automotive equipment for 35 years. When you buy a cheaper lift you are buying more necessary inspections, more replacement of parts (cables) and more chances of lift failure. Cheap lifts also have sub standard pistons. BUY A MOHAWK. BEST LIFT IN THE BUSINESS. You’ll pay more initially, but you’ll have a safe lift and guaranteed for life pistons. Oh, and no equalizing cables.

it's certainly due for a whole new cable anyway. atleast if planning to keep and use it, new cable! as for the lift new cable and sheaves will fix it up, making sure there no hydraulic issues which can overload the balance cable. also lifting vehicles unevenly loaded with material/tools on one side are a bad thing, as that puts lots of force on the cable too.

The lift I used back in the '70's was an in-floor unit with one massive hydraulic cylinder
in the center, with a thick steel center platform on top of the piston, and 4 extendable arms with pads swinging off the center platform. I never had an issue with it in 10 years.
I don't know what its rating was, but it would lift 3/4 ton pickups and vans without
breaking a sweat. I think at that point it was already 20 years old. It was so old it didn't
have a safety post or a lock. Every walk under it was an existential experience, but it never
failed me. Real old school machinery. The compressor was in the basement.
Your system for releasing that truck from lift jail, was very clever, and it worked. I agree with your decision to ditch that cable-operated lift. That thing is a menace.
I look forward to seeing you remove it, and what you will find to replace it.
Maybe just jack stands, a floor jack, and a creeper, for now.

Just a piece of advice. There are numerous companies who can perform annual inspections and issue certificate of inspection for all sorts of lifts. In business and for liability reasons you need to be able to prove you are practicing your "due dilligence" by having this type of equipment inspected by someone certified to do so. This is not a critique of Ray or his skill set. It's a simple matter that the USA is the law suit capital of the world and there are many lawyers who would sue their granny to make $1.00 Likewise, Insurance companies are famous for finding loop holes so they don't have to pay a claim which leaves the business owner financially ruined.

I was working on a drilling rig with a stuck pipe. I was part of the crew that did the unsticking process, which at the point we were at, involved determining where on the drill pipe the "stick" was happening deep down in the hole, THEN send an explosive charge down to that level which would have the effect of hitting the spot with a hammer. We'd position at the first screw juncture above the stick. The next steps involved putting pulling tension on the pipe itself, then, using some intricate calculations, torque the pipe in the opposite direction of the screw so that, when the charge went off, it would unscrew at that precise point.
These are complex equations that take into account the depth at which the juncture is, how many lengths of pipe are above it, and other factors like pipe size, etc. and from that derive the number of turns you need to give the pipe to give it the proper tension. BUT... we had a failure.
What holds the drill pipe in torsion are a pair of "slips", a heavy conical clamp that goes around the pipe tightly then is dropped into the rotary table in the floor of the deck that, in normal conditions, turns the drill stem so it drills the hole. What LIFTS this incredibly heavy length of drill pipe is a very large block and tackle system with cabling that goes several times through the block, that clamps the top of the pipe to lift it, and the block at the crown of the derrick. This thing is the size of a mid-size pickup, but weighs many tons on it's own. SO... the failure...
After the proper torsion was applied to the drill stem, the block was brought down to put some upward tension on the pipe, but the foreman applied too much too early, so that the slips rose just enough from the rotary table to begin spinning the block several times around. The cabling has almost 7 full twists in it, from block to crown, and wouldn't lift again. They had to apply tongs to the drill pipe and manually (with the help of the winch system) ratchet the pipe back around along with the block, then lifting it just enough each turn of the wrenches to reset the slip. It was the most nerve wracking industrial fail I'd ever been a part of, and if ONLY there had been cellphones back then, it'd be YT gold.

I used to install Rotary lifts and you nailed how it more than likely failed. Often the cables are overtightened which as you correctly pointed out are only for carriage equalization. Once the bearings fail the cable just eats through everything including the pin until it snaps. I bet if you look up in the overhead you'll see you have to replace the cable sheave and possibly the pin too. I will say though Rotary makes good lifts and still does, so as long as the pump is still strong I think it would be worth it
