    My friend is fond of saying true brilliance is being able to take a complex subject and get someone who has no knowledge of it to understand. You, sir, are truly brilliant. I envy what you've done here, but as the ancients would say, an amazing tablet dashboard begins with one card.

    Thank you, I've been using HA for a while and watching many YT channels on home automation. Majority of them, although very helpful, assume an understanding which is very basic but due to that none ever cover. You did an excellent job of covering not only the elements of the custom dashboards but all the details as to how and why everything works. It filled in many of those little gaps I was missing. I appreciate your time in doing these.

  • @d_sellers1

    I recommend talking about using templates via the Raw Editor. It cuts down on the amount of repeated code across buttons/cards of similar design and makes the YAML code easier to read/interact with at the Editor level. (PS. I saw HA forum post talking about making the "person" cards you have on your dashboard; I ripped the code apart to understand how the phone's battery percentage was used and placed on the card, turned the YAML into a template, and codensed the code using this.entity instead of hard-coding the entity into each card.)

    • @makeitworktech
      @makeitworktech  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm I'll look into that. I've never seen templates in the raw config of the dashboard!

    • @d_sellers1
      @d_sellers1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Line 28 starts the templating section with one of the original examples that I started with. Line 44 starts one of my templates with line 67 being a template that references the template at line 44 for more specific customization. You can see the first use of a custom-button card using the template at Line 224. Line 235 uses a different template.
      I posted a couple of pictures and some information in the readme. The motion detector template is a good reason to use templates. The template is about 30 lines long and I have four motion detector buttons (which would take about 120 lines to implement if coded directly). Referencing the template only uses 4 lines per button (so 16 lines plus the template at 30 lines). ~120 lines vs 46 lines.
      Check it out and let me know what you think. (Note: Theres a bunch of "testing" stuff towards the end of the YAML that I use for testing/experimenting/learning.)

    Recently (circa July 2023) when editing dashboards, Home Assistant provides a number in a circle at the base of each tile. That number presents the position of the tile. You can change it to relocate it anywhere - much more useful than the up/down arrows (which are still available).

    Nice video and thanks but.... This is going to sound like a rant and sorry for that as it is not meant to be- the problem with 99% of the HA vids is the creators show all this great stuff and throw out CSS, Jinja, YAML, etc. but seldom, close to never show how it works which does zero for the new guy who has zero knowledge about any kind of coding and mostly frustrates us into giving up. I understand you can't do a 3 hour vid breaking it down Barney-style but could we get some examples to cut/paste so we at least feel like we accomplished something. Personally I have tried and failed..many, many times to find resources to learn any of it, so when you ref CSS or whatever could you throw us a bone and link a primer or something, that would be great. Please don't ref the "HA documentation " it is Zero help to the uninitiated. I am super happy there are smart people like you and others showing us what can be done but a couple vids showing us how to do it from time to time would be great too. Again not aimed at you- I am currently failing at trying to do some jinja coding and am feeling a bit salty. 😂

    I created another card as an SOS with a twilio integration so boys can just press the button which calls our phones with a pre recorded message to call them.
    And another for panic alarm just incase which sets of ring sirens and also sends text to our phones. (Work in progess)

    However, when I go to my dashboard and want to add one of those cards I installed, they are not listed as Custom Cards. I have rebooted Home assistant after downloading the custom cards. I am a Hubitat user and I do have a Home Assistant instance. The one reason why I have avoided Home Assistant Dashboards is that I have not found a way to use something like Fully Kiosk or a Cast All the Things (CATT) server to display a dashboard on a remote tablet or Chromecast device on demand. The problem seems to be that I have found no way to "push" a dashboard remotely because it requires login credentials to display it. My use case is that with Hubitat I turn on a switch through a voice routine that triggers a routine to push the dashboard to a remote device. In Hubitat, there is an API string included in the URL that displays the dashboard very easily. The other issue is that it seems there is no way to display "JUST" the dashboard without the side panel and that is also something easy to do in Hubitat as well. Can you point me to any solutions to how to achieve these things?

You know the one that takes over from your Mother but can't cook that well and you have to give her compliments although Fido also refuse to eat her food. But I can help there, keep on lying, she loves compliments and she will reward you at least once a week and you get the added bonus of heading down to Burger King, and by stealth, start buying bits for the Office, when she finds out, it will be too late, you have already invested a lot of money into your Office and she will only withhold her reward for about a week them you are back in charge. @makeitworktech

    This is a great video, but one thing I will advise to anyone is do not use projects that are abandoned or archived and not getting updates. It may work at the moment, and you may take hours building a dashboard and then have the next HA release have a breaking change that makes that project stop working and as it's not getting updates you will be back to square one. Always try to use as many official integrations as possible, and if you need to use a custom card, make sure you use one that is actively maintained.
