I have watched tying videos from dozens of producers, Lefty Kreh makes me laugh, and I love him, but you are my absolute favorite, hands down. I am relatively new (3yrs) and losing my vision, which is another reason I love your videos, they are up close, and easier for me to learn. Again, Thank You tightlinevideo, Thank You 🎣🎣🙏🏼
Well I been tying files for going on 50 years now and I have sinned a lot at the vise. This is some of the very best fly tying video on You Tube. I have been going away from 5 min epoxy in recent years - I like the Loon Fly finish and just zap it with a light. But epoxy is fine, just tie a dozen or two then epoxy at once. Great pocket water nymph, been using one as my heavy in Czech Nymphing- I get as many hook up with it as I do with the other two.
Thank you for providing us with such great videos. Everting about it is great from music, to narration to unclutter background. I have enjoyed all that I have seen.
This is the first fly I ever tied. I picked a really hard one for a beginner! Also tried the prince nymph. Went into fly fish food and said " I want to start tying flies, but I am sure i need to start with something simple like copper john or prince nymph" Lance Egan was kind enough to also suggest I start with some black beauties and san jaun worms Hahah!
Bad ass!!! Tying some for a friend who uses them for Atlantics in Sault Ste Marie. UV gel seems like less of a pain. The epoxy would set up before I tied three of them 😂😂😂. Great tie. Thank you 🎣🐟😃
I've watched several really good videos on the copper john and I feel that your demo is the best. I also learned a couple of tying tricks while watching. Thanks
"The final layer of epoxy, will cover up a multitude of sins" Makes me wonder how long tightlinevideo has been watching me tie...ha,ha. Thanks for another fantastic video production, and really digging the music in the background.
Some substitutes for the flashabou that I have experimented with and found usable are just like one small strand folded over to make 4 small strands. Also if you want to cut the inside of an airhead wrapped or something similar that works very well. Great video though I'm only tying this version from now on. So effective
I really learned a lot from this vid. Great instruction and reasoning behind the Instruction. I've tied at least 3 dozen of these bad boys and they look great!
I just started tying and found your videos. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. I'm not sure if you will read this, but I subscribed to see all your content.
@@nicolelewis1828 I just checked. It’s in their catalog. Jumbo Pearl Flashabou, 1805. It’s saltwater flashabou. I hope that helps. www.hedroninc.com/sites/default/files/Hedron%20catalog.pdf
They are mainly for trout but I'm sure bass and panfish would also take them. I don't sell flies but most fly shops and catalogs carry the Copper John.
Hi. You have once given me an advice, I'll try to pay you back with mine. You might want to cover the copper wire with some kind of varnish/epoxy/UV resin. The reason for this is as soon as you start using this fly in the water, the copper will become discoloured due oxidation. Even if it doesn't get wet, it will eventually oxidize. UV resin works best for me, I simply don't like epoxy due to bubbles and less control over its curing.
Thanks for the tip on the wire, you are absolutely right. The Ultrawire from Wapsi like I'm using in video however already has some kind of coating on it which makes less likely to oxidize which is why I like it. On the other hand, I like you started using UV resin on nearly all wire body flies and really like the look of it as it sort of magnifies the wraps. Anyway, thanks, great tip for all viewers keep them coming.
if you use epoxy and want to get rid of air bubbles, just run a lighter briefly over the fly, or if you mix the epoxy on some aluminum foil, run a lighter under it and the bubbles will disappear fairly quickly
I have two bobbins one is metal for copper wire and gold wire and the other one is pvc I use that for thread I like to keep my wire on the spool so there is less waste when I have to cut off the excess
What I found works well is using 70 denier for the body and then when I need to tie the wingcase, going to veevus 16/0 so it doesn't build up bulk (especially on sizes 16-18)
Fabulous video! Question from a newbie - since we cover the thorax with epoxy or resin anyway, what’s the point of the Thin Skin? I don’t have any so I tied them with just flashabou and covered with Loon thick to make a bulbous thorax. They look great and the flashabou shines through. I think you could save a step…
As usual, a great instructional video; lucid and very well shot. I have a question: That looks like a magnetic strip on the popsicle stick you use to get a beadhead from the bag. The beads must be brass plated steel, not solid brass, correct
I love flytying. Watching these yt videos always sets the mood. Also always triggering me buying more tying stuff online,as I dont have everything this or that fly is build off. Btw:What is "leadfree" wire made of? Probably isnt as heavy as lead? But like bullets and airgun pellets, these days we are more environment aware and try to substitute I quess!

me gusta y es divertido la fabricación de moscas pero primero necesito fabricar mi propia herramienta y necesito mas información sobre los amarres y como utilizar la herramienta gracias
Alyssa Gustavson lots of trout and bluegill...where i live i have a river filled with bass and big rainbow and brown trout, i catch lots of troit on these flies and often a lot of small bass 6-12 "
Where do you get such perfect peacock herl? The ones I buy from my local fly shop don't look nearly as nice the ones you use in all of your excellent videos.
Fish: "I don't recognize that insect but, what a thorax
Easily the best copper John tutorial video on TH-cam. Thank you for doing this.
According to your precise advice I have tied my first Copper John and it looks nice! Thanks a lot.
Best fly tying instructional videos ever. Thanks much

This is the best video on tying a copper john. The others are pretty amateurish compared to this one. Excellent instruction.
its amazing how simple UV resin has made these flies!
Without doubt, one of the finest instructional videos I have watched for fly tying. Keep'm coming, please!

It took me a while to find the correct size flashabou. It is made by Hedron, Inc. It is salt water pearl flashabou, number 1805, and it is 1/8" wide.
Can you still get this flashabou? I checked the Hedron website and could not find it. Thanks.

is there any substitute for thin skin
My favorite is the black and silver Pattern.
I know I don’t have any of that material but I’m going to use what I’ve got and see what I get.
How much do all of th materials including uv light and resin cost?
what is that back ground music for this video?
Speckled gray works well also

Just a mix of other metals I believe. Seems a bit lighter than lead to me, so I just add a few more wraps.
tightlinevideo definitely lighter. Hold two packages at the store and compare. Still eco friendly though
Antimony and Tin.
r u can use uv resin or no
what are some variations on colors
You should put the specific materials in the description
Thread: black 8/0 or 70 denier
Bead: gold bead, size to match hook (here, a 7/64" for the size 14 hook)
Weight: 0.015 lead free wire
Tails: brown goose biots
Abdomen: copper wire, brassie sized
Top wingcase: pearl flashabou, saltwater size
Bottom wingcase: black thin skin
Thorax: peacock herl
Legs: speckled brown hen hackle:
Adhesive: 5 minute epoxy
Hook: 2X strong 2X long nymph or streamer hook, size 14

What size bead would you recommend for smaller copper johns? Such as 16's and 18's. Thanks
3/32" or 7/64" I tend to like slightly oversized heads on Copper Johns.
Great video! Thanks!
Great Vid thanks one question is there a alternative to goose bigots if I don't have any??
You might want to try a small clump of marabou for a more flowy fly
Elle est superbe !! ;-) de FRANCE
Could I use Bondic instead of the epoxy?

Need to make some thanks
