- Detailed instructions for tying a Guide's Choice Hare's Ear.
Hook: 2X-long nymph hook (here a Dai-Riki 730), size 10-16.
Bead: Gold, 7/64-inch.
Weight: Lead-free wire, .015.
Thread: 8/0 or 70 Denier, fluorescent fire orange.
Tail: Hare's mask.
Rib: Ultra Wire, brassie size, gold.
Abdomen: Light natural hare's mask dubbing.
Wingcase: Pearlescent Flashabou.
Thorax: Peacock herl.
Hackle: Hungarian partridge.
Hot spot: Tying thread.

This is now my number one go to fly here in Utah. I find that I am tying more and more of these because everyone who borrows one from me wants more and more! Ive probably tied over 100 of this pattern this year alone and my box still only has a couple of em left. Ive pulled picky 26 inch browns with these bad boys. Thanks for the videos. I tied a bunch of these in 12,14 and 16 last spring and they quickly became the best fly in my box fishing them for stocked east coast rainbows. Fished as a nymph or swung as a wet. I really appreciate your tying videos. This is truly a great fly!
The technique of wrapping in the partridge hackle is genius!
What a great looking fly. Just whipped up a half dozen and they're really fun to tie. I know I've got it down when I can finally tie one in real time with the video. :-) The first few I have to pause it a million times, but by the 5th or 6th one I've got it down. Thanks for what you do. :-)

Great looking pattern, I think I'd call it the "belts n braces" nymph as it covers all options - (I'm a limey braces are what you call suspenders, suspenders,are what we call the things that hold ladies stockings up -I'm going to have to lie down now I have called up that image). Thanks for your videos, learned loads from your techniques.
That is one cool looking hare's ear! I bet crappie or bluegill will tear that up.

On the flash-ola back...you can put a small drop of thin solar-easy to enhance the shine on the back

I find peacock herl to be very delicate. I would recommend counter-wrapping the ribbing wire forward, and not snipping it breaking. After the herl is wound and secured, continue counter-wrapping the wire over the herl, then tie-in the wire behind the bead.
I find that scratching the partridge feather with a notched Kieth Richard's guitar pick helps format the feather for palmering
I find the end of one of Keith's cigarettes, used as dubbing material, is irresistible to trout. So much so, that when released, they keep getting caught again. I can't work out why!

so I just bought some head cement today for dry flies...and I was wondering if the head cement would add any unwanted weight to the fly?

I wouldn't put head cement on dry flys. You want dry flies to float

What are you using to cut the thread once you are done whip finishing your fly? It looks like some kind of chisel.
It is the other end of his whip finish tool that has been sharpened to a chisel-like point.
Could I have some help please. What is "the appropriately lengthed" hacked. Can't slap these on the hackle gauge.

About a hook shank in length. But, don't sweat the length too much. It is often hard to find feathers, or parts of feathers that are short enough. Just keep it reasonable.

Do you not want to wrap the wire opposite the direction of the material? Or do you find that matters?
It doesn't really matter on a dubbed body like this as there is no delicate material beneath the wire that you're trying to protect. If it was a peacock herl or pheasant tail body then absolutely counter wrap with the wire.

this is a nice fly, but nowhere near as effective as the original with rabbit torax and peacock casing! we tie in Brown English partridge before the bead as hares ear spider nymph! or put the partridge under the wing casing as legs! George Daniel said it best patterns doesn't matter its getting the nymph down quickly but the original Irish pattern can't be passed on Irish rivers, I've tried dozens of variants! variants work for retailers but traditional patterns are tried and tested and beings lost through variants of variants! and BS syntactic materials!
