- This episode defied so many expectations, was SO satisfying in many regards, but still managed to crank the anxiety to an ELEVEN. Banana Fish, why am I not surprised?
The symbolism, Dragon Moon's desperation, the chase and connections, and one helluva Night at the Museum! Happy Valentine's Day?!

Yut Lung fixed his hair in different ways to be used as a weapon against him. It was hilarious, tbh.
YES! Someone on here commended how Yut-Lung's hair is a representation of his mental state (loose = unhinged, dolled up for Golzine = scheming, ponytail = casual) so I found that interesting, but I really thought it was hilarious how his hair was used as a weapon against him this episode, too! One of my favorite episodes!!
This episode did a great job showing us the relationship between Ash and Blanca. Blanca was basically narrating Ash's moves to Yut-Lung, almost, well, like a proud mentor or teacher. Even the hostage scene was so much theater. If Blanca really wanted to shoot Ash, he would've. If Ash REALLY wanted to seriously injure Blanca with his knife, he would've. Neither of them had any intention of seriously hurting the other.
Yut-Lung showed that he's pretty much useless outside of ordering people around. He cannot survive on the streets, and he does. Not. Listen. He should've stayed in the car, as instructed, but he had to show his true 16-year-old rebellious side. Also, "Ash, you'll pay for this"?? Pay for what? You started this, kiddo!
The fandom clowned Eiji so hard for not killing Golzine. Meanwhile, my thinking was "do you know how awful you have to be if even EIJI shoots at you??" Besides, had he killed Golzine, things would've gotten even harder for Ash's side.
Cain...I know he doesn't know much about Ash's past, but he couldn't have picked a worse way to restrain him. I don't want to imagine how Ash felt waking up tied up like that 😔
I love when Ash mentioned that Eiji saved him "again". Eiji didn't realize that Ash meant more than just rescuing him from the party; he took CARE of Ash in a way that no one else would've. From making him rest and even holding his weakened hand so that he could hold the soup...only Eiji could do that.
Yesssss, Blanca is a proud mentor and it's striking me in this episode that perhaps he ISN'T as neutral as we once thought....hmmmm...This episode was SO good and so unexpected in terms of where the plot went! Things are just twisting and turning! And yessss, UNLIKE Ash, who has had to survive on the streets, Yut-Lung is too reckless and impulsive and inexperienced. And he is not smart when backed into a corner...definitely showing that he's a 16 year old underneath it all.
And ahhhh, I mean....Eiji is NOT a trained shot. At all. Honestly, I can't say I'd be any different in this situation. But it was funny when Sing was like, "HOW COULD YOU MISS?!" Ahhh, and Eiji retains his "innocence" by not truly killing Golzine.
Cain...ah....yeah, in hindsight, that wasn't the best way to go about it. I get Cain's trying to help, but yeah, you bring up a good point, there.
YES, Eiji is rescuing Ash in more ways than one...that whole soup scene was so heartwarming...Banana Fish....just....give us more of THAT! UGH.

Happy Valentine's day! This was the episode where everyone used Yut-Lung's hair against him. Blanca did it at the party and Ash had Yut-Lung's hair wrapped around his neck. This is the con of being a total diva. Everyone uses your fashion against you. Eiji stepped up his game this episode though he still missed Golzine and managed to get kidnapped (again). Eiji would do anything to save Ash just like Ash would do anything to save Eiji. I find it interesting that it was because of Eiji that Ash agreed to this deal and it was because of Eiji that he got out of the deal. Thanks for another great reaction!
Happy Valentine's Day! RIGHT?! Man, Yut-Lung's gorgeous locks were exploited this episode for sure! Being a diva has a price, clearly! He is truly the most fashionable this series, though.
And YES! Eiji, you're improving...slowly, but surely, right?! But I love that he's at the point where he is willing to risk everything to rescue Ash -- it's like a beautiful parallel of Episode 10, which is funny enough, 10 episodes prior. The way the light comes back to Ash’s eyes when Blanca talks to him gives me chills every time
RIGHT!? Oh my gooooosh, yes! That moment, you can see all of the implications of Blanca/Eiji/Yut Lung hitting Ash at that moment and it's the start of the break in and I LOVE IT. Thank you for pointing that out and for the comment! Ugh. CHILLS every time, indeed!
I had to laugh when Sing was like "How can you miss at that range?" I mean I would probably too because he's about to shoot a person for the first time. It makes sense but it's still hilarious.
Blanca will always be one of the most interesting characters I've seen.
Yut-lung our pretty Diva.XD He's smart but because he is still a kid,he panics quickly when things don't go according to how he planned it and makes bad decisions. We're getting closer to my fav scene,I'm really excited for it.

YES! In the manga, which I'll eventually talk more about, they actually do target practice with Eiji before they rescue Ash...and Eiji is JUST as bad at shooting in practice...they all chalk it up to, "Well, you tried." Hahha!

I love the care in Eiji's moves when he gave the cup of soup to Ash and how Ash looked at peace (even if was just a little moment) with him.

On a happy note, Eiji and Ash are together for your Valentine episode. And Eiji still isn't a murder because he's a poor marksman. Sometimes you have to take the little wins in a bad situation 😂 One small problem I do have is how little the anorexia affects Ash once he's free but that's nitpicking since it only went on for a month. Blanka has made it clear from his actions in this episode that he still cares for Ash when he prevented Yut Lung to go after Eiji at the party. Having him as a fly on the wall could be a good thing as long as he isn't ordered to do something drastic 😬

Hey! Right?! This actually turned out -- in Banana Fish terms -- to be a great episode for Valentine's Day! Isn't that sad?! Hahahaha!
And yes, Eiji's stormtrooper aim keeps him from being a murderer for now. And ahhh, I wonder in the manga if there's more to the anorexia bit -- I'm reading the manga now, and I'm hoping to talk about it later so I'm curious what the manga will have extra about that. And yessss, Blanca, despite being neutral is definitely putting himself in the way to help Ash. Interesting, right? His character is so curious to me! And yeah...crazy...

I absolutely loved the Ash and Eiji content we got in this episode -- I did NOT see that coming this episode and it was SO welcomed, despite the tense situation of it all! And Blanca just gives me anxiety in general with the whole situation. And uhmmm, yes, I get the idea that despite his position making him neutral, he DOES still harbor emotions towards Ash, and that makes me curious what all will happen!

Watching how stressed you are through these episodes just brings back memories. You really can't tell what's going to happen from minute to minute with how quickly developments are taking place.

Yes! For all Golzine says he won't use his emotions (and even tells Blanca to not use his emotions), it's clear that there IS some emotional connection there...even with Blanca being "neutral." And yesssss, ugh...Ash's father figures are all so complex. But I mean...Max is the best one, right? Hmmm, I'll keep that in mind about the man that pushed Sing into the river...and....OH....

I want to tell my thoughts on Banana Fish to you, but whatever I write, it seems to be spoiler. So I choose the topic carefully.
Today, I was surprised to read the article that only in Japan, the profession of voice actor is approved as a job. Really!?
It is a popular profession in Japan. However, I hadn't noticed this profession until I watched the animated Banana Fish.
You said in episode 19 that the voice actor for Ash was great. I agree with that.
Friends of mine who were reading Banana Fish in a manga magazine 35 years ago said, "I don't want to watch animated Banana Fish because I'll be disappointed if it's different from the voice, music, and color which I had imaged."
Before I watched, I had the same opinion, but it was overturned.
The work of the animation staff is commendable.
Especially the voice actors as Ash and Author did a great job. They created the ash and author that I had in mind.

I can TOTALLY understand your friends' feelings! Whenever there's a book I love, I am ALWAYS fearful when they adapt it into another medium because it will be changed in some way, shape, or form. I've been reading the manga now in preparation for the final episodes, and I can see the differences between the Manga and Anime (and will talk about them eventually on TH-cam). Happy Valentine's daaay !! Ash and Eiji are reunited in this episode, twice even, so it's totally a valentine's episode 😂 We even got this soft scene between them, so I choose to see it as a date. With Valentine's soup. Ash is with Eiji and suddenly, life has good taste, and he can eat. This is the only banana fish we need. Ash healing into the light of Eiji.
I love how Cain was under the impression he could separate Ash from Eiji, then the boy who hasn't eaten in a month just destroyed a wall easy, and Cain was like "oh yeah, what was I thinking" 😂 I guess he was in the one gang that hadn't see what Eiji means to Ash, so ... yeah, choose your fights Cain, cuz u can not win against Asheiji.
God, I don't get Blanca, it really bothers me ! Maybe it's only his features that prevents me from analysing him : he's this big calm wall, with a soft playful smirk that leads us to think that he's a clever bastard who understand what's going on, who does terrible things but in the end is a good guy. But truth is, he seems fucking submissive, I mean his advice are always : "stay in the role that is yours". So his role is to be a dog to every master who pays, and he thinks Ash's role is near Golzine. Every time he smiles, I think "ooooh, he said yes, but he's gonna do what he wants anyway, clever bastard", but no, he never goes against his contractors. Even after he retired, he goes back to be a dog ... I don't get him. There's really something that doesn't match between his "chara design" and the choices he makes.
But we have to like him, in the end. Because he pulled Yut-Lung's pigtails. And that's the best scene in all banana fish 🤣

Happy Valentine's Daaaay! Yes!! I was not expecting the soft Ash and Eiji moments in this episode, but I am SOOOOO welcoming them today, especially for Valentine's Day! And with SOUP! I'll take it!! And yeah, I love that Cain at least is trying to help...in a way that doesn't work, but at least he cares for Ash somewhat, too. Ahhhh....
Blanca is SO hard to read -- I think the face that we don't get to see what he's thinking hurts, too. He is probably on "survival" mode and knows that if he plays the part he needs to, he can survive, but Ash challenges his whole worldview with his reasoning that the world isn't worth living in without someone like Eiji. The "neutral" varnish on Blanca definitely looked to have some cracks this episode....which has me super curious! Hmmmm....and maybe the manga will have more insight into this?
But OMG, YES, Yut-Lung's hair torture this episode was on point. Just.....perfection.

I honestly thought that he did get shot -- it looked to me like the knife Ash threw hit Blanca and the shot Blanca fired hit Ash in the shoulder. In the manga, that's what it looks like, too! If that makes sense! :)

@@diginovastar6325 In the manga, it's made a little more explicit that Dragon Moon's men have captured some of the gangs and Ash finds out Eiji is included in that. So he makes Yut-Lung a hostage to get them released, and Blanca uses Eiji to make sure Ash won't actually kill Yut-Lung. On second viewing, it is a little weird, right? I think the manga makes it a little clearer why it happens, though, if that makes sense. :)

・ The opening scene, the beginning of the "Ominous Party" held by Dino...😅
➡ Eiji and others successfully rescued Ash earlier than expected.
Just by listening to Eiji's voice, Ash regains vitality at once♪
I was surprised and impressed when Ash shot a gun to protect Eiji even when he was blind.
Thanks to the help of Sing and Cain, it was really good that the rescue proceeded smoothly.
It's a pity that Dino wasn't killed, but I was happy with the success, as the first priority was to rescue Ash safely.
I was worried about the words and actions of Yut Lung, who was still jealous of Eiji, but I was relieved that Blanca was a good deterrent.
In this scene, the "contract terms" that Blanca tied with Yut Lung worked in a positive direction, and both Eiji and Ash were able to escape from the venue without being hurt by Blanca.
As Yut Lung pointed out, I thought Blanca intentionally offered those contract terms in case something went wrong.
In the depths of his heart, Blanca, who cherishes his ex-his disciple Ash, seems to continue to seek ways to avoid damaging Ash as much as possible.
However, this behavior of Blanca further heightened the flames of Yut Lung's "jealousy"...🔥💦
・ As planned by Sing, Eiji and others escaped into the Manhattan subway with Ash.
➡ When I saw Ash obediently expressing "gratitude" to Sing and Cain, my heart became warm.
Ash, who was finally able to meet Eiji again, may have returned to a stable mental state because Eiji was next to him.
Ash in this scene was cute and nice😘 However, there was one worrying scene😥
Lao is dissatisfied with Sing, who is deepening his ties with Ash.
He is one of the gangsters who has the closest relationship with Sing, but he also had a brother-like relationship with Shorter.
Like Sing, Lao, who respected Shorter and had a special bond, hates Ash, who killed Shorter.
But I understand this feeling of Lao and I think it is natural.
Because, at the direction of Ash, all the members of the street gang in Chinatown, except Sing, have not yet been informed of Shorter's "death truth".
Of course, Ash has already predicted that this will happen.
But Ash puts the safety of those around him first, rather than avoiding hatred for himself while hiding his true feelings.
Therefore, there is no mutual understanding between Ash and the people around him.

Only Sing, who knows the truth, understands those things, so he calmly responds to the anger from Lao.
I can understand Lao's feelings, Sing's feelings, and Ash's feelings, so it made me sad to see the scenes where each feeling passed each other like that.
In particular, Sing is still a 15-year-old boy, but because he is excellent, he is now a candidate for the next boss after the death of Shorter.
As a result, he is in the most difficult position mentally, being sandwiched between the Lee family of Yut Lung and his friends in Chinatown, as well as the will of Ash.
He has pride as the next boss and various emotions, so he can not show his worries and weaknesses to the people around him.
Sing is pathetic...I think it's a really painful situation😢
However, I thought again that this is the position of being a "boss".
As you can see by looking at Ash, standing on top of a person means that you have to put yourself off and think about his subordinates and the people around you first.
And if have that ability, being a boss has nothing to do with age.
It made me sad to realize that they are living in a really severe world.
And, as usual, Ash, who says that the food provided by Eiji is delicious, was cute.
Even if it is just hot water, if it is provided by Eiji, Ash's heart will be filled with happiness.
And when I saw Ash resting comfortably only next to Eiji, I realized again Ash's deep love and trust in Eiji.
Feeling the pure and warm affection and bond between the two people, I thought they were true "person of destiny".
But Ash's peace doesn't last long...😰
・ A fierce battle scene continues from the subway to the museum.
➡ Dino・Yut Lung・Blanca etc., it began to move trying to capture the Ash.
Ash and others are cornered one after another in the subway where there is no escape. Eiji chooses reckless measures to protect Ash.
Worried about Eiji, Ash carries out a plan that makes himself a "decoy", even though he's still not in good shape.
The battle scene of Ash in the museum was overwhelming!!
He battles as taught by Blanca, and the battle remains Ash-dominated.
But Yut Lung is not unresponsive either!!
He took Eiji and others hostage again and stopped Ash's momentum.
Blanca, who holds Eiji and others hostage, and Ash, who holds Yut Lung hostage, begin "negotiation".
Tension is growing in this scene.
However, Blanca, who seems unwilling to kill Ash, is taken hostage by Ash even the client, Yut Lung, so by all means, Ash seems to dominate this situation.
As I expected, Eiji and others succeeded in escaping from Blanca with Ash's signal, and Ash also succeeded in escaping from the museum.
Still, Ash was shot in the shoulder by Blanca, and Blanca was injured by a knife thrown by Ash in he arm.
I realized once again that when these two fight, they cannot stay intact with each other😨
When Dino hears this situation, he does not get impatient and appears in the museum with a relaxed attitude.
Dino knows that Yut Lung can never catch Ash.
I thought that Dino's confident attitude was not a sense of trust in Ash, but a desire to brag about the "genius/monster" he had raised.
Dino completely treats Ash as a personal property...💦
As usual, I feel "disgust" at Dino's words and actions😣
・ Ending scene…
➡ Yut Lung, disgusted by the fact that the situation did not go according to his plan, exploded his dissatisfaction.
He said to Ash the ominous thing, "I'll send you two scorpions!"...🦂
I am very worried about what kind of strategy Dino and Yut Lung will take in the future😰
And I'm also worried about the future of Ash and Eiji, who were able to escape from the museum safely.
There are only 4 episodes left for the anime "Banana Fish".

Basically, Mr. Saitou is often in charge of a character with a weak mentality like Yamaguchi or a beautiful boy character like Ash, so I was surprised that a intimidating character like Lao could also be played.
During Lao's acting, he utters a fairly low voice quality.
Once again, I was struck by the high acting ability of the voice actors.
By the way, Mr. Saitou is also in charge of "Lan Jingyi" (=a cheerful boy who was arguing with Jin Ling), one of Wangji's disciples, as I introduced in "Mo Dao Zu Shi (Japanese dubbed version)".

Ahh, this episode was not what I was expecting in terms of the rescue and what happened afterwards; I love that they broke out and that there were the sweet/tender moments with Ash and Eiji -- I was NOT expecting that! The twists and turns this episode took were incredible. Yut-Lung's plans with the "scorpions" and trying to twist Lao against his step-brother have me worried. Yes, Sing is ONLY 15...he's such a kid, and I hate he has to go through everything like this! Ahhh...and then there's Blanca's business in all this...that conclusion with the "trade off" was SO INTENSE! A night at the museum, indeed!
