    Leah, I am so thankful for you. I’m a single homeowner with no “handy person” to help me with house projects. You have helped me so much. The people around me are so impressed with what I have done/am doing all on my own! It has saved me so much money, it has assured me a job well done, it has alleviated the anxiety of paying a stranger to come into my house to do it, it has increased the value of my home, and perhaps most importantly, it has made me feel empowered and confident that I don’t need a man to get things done. I thank you so much, and I really appreciate the way you break things down for beginners. You’ve made real difference in my life. Thank you, and keep it up! 💖💪🏽

      +Raeed Tayeh TH-cam is better than a TV show. You can search on topics and TH-cam automatically suggests related content. Unlike a TV show, you can watch the videos as often as you want, any time. Also, unlike a TV show that is constrained by advertising breaks, a TH-cam video can be 100% information, no fat and no time wasted by rehashing previously covered information following a commercial break! (If you've ever watched a Home & Garden TV show, you know what I mean: Seven minutes of information, following by 3 minutes of commercials, followed by two minutes of recap after the commercials. In the end, a half-hour show has just 10 minutes of useful information, if you're lucky. It's mostly a waste of time and an exercise in frustration.)

    Been in the trades for a long time (1 trade, Union Ironworkers) I am doing some remodeling on an older house I bought last winter and have been using TH-cam to do it for the most part because ironwork does not translate to carpentry barely at all. You are a great instructor , very patient . Perfect for the very new . A bit too patient for my experience, until now. I’ve walked by 25 years of drywall and drywallers and realize I didn’t know sh:t about drywall outside of patching holes poorly . Thank you.

    Hello Ms. Leah. After watching several videos for the past several months I recently stumbled across yours and can not express how much I have enjoyed each one! Thank you for explaining each project in a thorough step-by-step manner. The medium pace at which you explain things also makes a world of difference. In doing so, we are not confused along the way (i.e. having to continuously replay the video due to one speaking too fast!). Thank you so much for taking the time to HELP those of us in need of home repairs, that for one reason or another need to do it for ourselves! May you be blessed for all that you have sown and sacrificed in your endeavors!

    Leah, thank you so much for this video and your other ones about texturing. I had a couple minor cracks above doors, and a rather big one across my ceiling that I taped and mudded. I then blotted on more mud with a crumpled up plastic bag and flattened it gently with the taping knife. Primed, painted, and you cannot see anything is amiss now. I was able to do it from following the techniques in your videos. Your confidence is contagious! You're a treasure!

    This has helped me SO much, as a woman who loves to do home improvements, and loves to get her hands dirty, and a husband who hates them, he'd rather go get his nails pulled out than to do a simple home improvement ! we bought a mobile home after my health got worse, and I needed to be on 1 level not 3 like our house is, but the young couple who owned it before we bought it almost destroyed this place, and since I'm use to a house, I wanted my trailer ( mobile home) to look more like a nice home, not the cheapness of the trailer and by all means they are not cheap at all when you go buy one, but some are cheap made like mine! fake wood everywhere. Anyways, I removed the fake pieces of wood trim running up and down my walls every 2 foot or so, and now I've made a mess and a lot of work for myself, so when I found this I was delighted ! I ran to Lowes and got my materials, and now I'm watching once again for a refresher course so I know I'll be doing it right ! THANK YOU !!!

    Wow, great job. I should have watched your video a long time ago. Here's a few of my noob tips - stuff I learned the hard way:
    1. Use a small putty knife for filling in screw/nail heads for jusr the first coat, and fill in the hole starting at an edge. If you go right over the top, you can get an air bubble that you just gotta deal with that.
    2. Do not use the solid fiberglass tape, just don't.
    3. Use a low angle on your knife to spread, going lighter and lighter to smooth.
    4. Use a higher angle to scrape of excess
    5. Keep the ready-mix closed tightly. Scrape away the plaster from the top-inside of the bucket take assure a good seal.
    6. Make sure no dry bits of plaster are mixed in with the wet stuff, it'll just leave streaks.
    7. Don't just use a small knife for the job, you need larger knife to smooth properly or you'll end up doing more sanding and coating then needed.
    8: Double check the thickness of the existing drywall before buying more to patch in - it comes in 3/8, 1/2, and 5/8 thickness.

      wow, thanks! but i wanna know the actual difference of using a fiber mesh against a paper tape?

    • @alexandergraef8940
      @alexandergraef8940 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The paper binds to the mud, so it works right away if tensile strain occurs. The fiber tape needs a full tensile strain before working, by then the mud if often already broken.

    you should use what you called hot mud with the mesh tape. If you use regular joint compound with mesh it will crack easily.
    The hot mud is harder and will work great with mesh tape.

    Leah, I live in an area that was affected by Hurricane Harvey. The house I bought suffered from this storm and had to be completely gutted from ceiling to floor. I have to rebuild this house on my own because I cannot afford the inflated labor costs. I have no idea what I am doing but finding your channel as helped me get a better understanding of what I need to do. I am struggling and extremely overwhelmed. I wish I could have you here with me to help. Thank you for your channel and guiding me through rebuilding my home alone.

    Hey Leah! This is the video that you made that got me kickstarted into joint compound. I tried all kinds after this, pre-made quick dry, pre-made takes-until-the-end-of-time, dries and your homemade. I found that after the rooms were done or areas of, that over time, the making-my-own option, held up the best. Anyway, I didn't have an account on the youtubes back then to say THANK YOU. So here's a great big fat THANK YOU for my kickstart into what is just so flippin' fun to do. Who knew that I could do it? You did! You're brilliant. I truly, truly enjoy your work. Cheers, Ivy.

    In the UK drywall is relatively new (20 something years) and my mothers new house keeps getting cracks in her ceiling, i cannot believe all the repairmen do is use filler, they dont tape the joints, and wonder why they keep cracking! you should come over and teach them! or earn a fortune yourself!

    • @starodin
      @starodin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jusb1066 if they dont use jointape they no craftsmen.
      i use it all the time, but its my realday work.
      hotmix as in video i only use in repair, never else.
      the finish mix, have glue in it, so the joint works like a welding point.
      but it takes longer time to dry using this, normaly 24hrs.

      @brockberryman3572 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +jusb1066 20 years?! I was using it 40 years ago in UK....... But, you are right about the absence of tape. Funny thing, the British use drywall, but then they skim over the whole surface, just as they used to with lath and plaster. This is no doubt the fundamental explanation for the decay of British civilisation.
      Thank you Leah for your wonderful, clear tutorials. You have a real genius for teaching.

    Good video Jane, she is a very good on the camera. I'm a drywaller since i've been 18 years old and am now 48. I've been there done that seen this... with the hole... plug it with mud, no tape needed. I used to use tape for years until i found out that tape is not necessarily needed and does cause taped area to hump and thus you will need to feather out the hump so it becomes flat. All this is unnecessary. Mostly tape is only needed for joints. I would only tape a patch that is larger than a two foot area. Unless there is a fixture or something going over top of the patched area, that would cause pressure and therefore cause it to crack. The only other reason would be if there was a patch that was unstable, meaning there is not a solid foundation behind it. But if it's solid...i never tape it. I've been doing this for about 3 years now and no call backs on any jobs.

    Ive seen various vids on doing drywall on TH-cam and I do a lot of drywall work with my business and I wanted to mention real quick that a 10" knife is slightly bowed, so if you sight down the edge of the blade you'll see it bows in one direction. You want that bow to be against the wall surface. Otherwise the edges of the knife will dig into the applied mud and create lines in the mud. Not ridges but gouges. It can be very frustrating if not aware of the shape of those types of knives. The only reason I brought it up is I've never seen anyone mention this on any of the TH-cam vids I've seen when teaching drywall methods.
    You are doing such a great thing for people to learn from. I do construction for a living but there is always something to be learned. Thank you again for all your time in making these videos. You really should have your own home show on television! You're amazing ;)

      seejanedrill- oh geez I wasn't trying to come off as a know it all.. I was only mentioning it because I thought it was worth mentioning to help people. I do a lot of floating for drywall patching and I can remember my first day of work doing fire and water damage repair back in the day and the guy that I was working with new the proper way to float but thought it would be fun not to teach me about holding a 12 inch knife. It was very frustrating. The owner of the company I worked for, finally saw me struggling and showed me the correct way to hold it.
      Ahh the people you run across doing the trades... Some are asses that don't want to see people excel.
      Which is why I appreciate your style.
      Thanks,
      Mike.

    Had water damage in a small room. Trying to save a few dollars, i googled some ideas and sad to say things didn't quite turn out right. The vault ceiling had tape on it which I pulled off and accused the previous owners of doing shabby work until I watched your video and realized that's actually what I need to redo. EXCELLENT video. Absolute amatuer here, and I picked up some pointers from drywall guys which MAY have been helpful for the neophyte, but your method is FAR better. These guys recommended putting more pressure on the outside of the knife on all coats, leaving the middle ( the joint ) with slightly more mud. The end result of course is more sanding. Thier method leaves amateurs some wiggle room, but it takes more material and requires considerable more work. Thanks for an excellent tutorial. Best I've seen.

    I always thought that I needed to have a thick layer over the tape so you couldn't see the tape. I would put the mud on, put the tape down, run the blade over it to squeeze the mud out but then I'd put a think layer over it so you couldn't see the tape. Then I'd come back and say, Screw this!! Now I understand. The whole purpose to doing three (3) thin layers taking it out farther each time is make it blend in. Thank you so much so your videos.
