Your videos turned a heavy duty mechanic (myself) into a reno addict. I bought my 1st home this yr and ive done everything from opening up load bearing walls, replacing small windows with large windows, drywall, wiring, framing. As a professional painting contractor, I can appreciate this video because I have encountered this type of finish work where the joints are not beveled and it is necessary to try and hide the taped area without leaving a hump on the wall. Very good job of explaining this technique, Shannon.

Been going thru all the drywall spackle vids on the tube that I could/can find and this is absolutely one of the best. And again, the humps revealed by the sun situation can be mitigated using a flash light from the side as Shannon has learned us in one of his other vids. Excellent. I've never done much taping, and noticed from your video that I was way off base on how to tape butt joints. First, I was using "hot" mud, and had it way too thick. And I was trying to do the job in 1-2 steps. As you can imagine, I always ended up having to do a lot of sanding because the mud gets difficult to work with as the seconds go by, and more than once ended up exposing the tape again, which creates a whole new set of problems. One of the great things about videos like yours is that people like myself can watch and learn. Greatly appreciated.
Butt joints need to be taped as flat as possible. Using a TapeBuddy tool keeps the tape tight and makes this joint easy to work with.

I am a DYIer and doing small drywalling jobs around home for 25 years. From your video, I learned that wider mud on butt joint makes a smoother finish.

As someone who has never done this before and had no idea where to even begin, I found this video very informative. I feel confident that I can do the job myself.

As a retired teacher, I have to agree with previous comments. Shannon, you do a great job of explaining what you are doing and why. I've had to do some drywall projects. I wish I had seen this video years ago. I now feel able to finish the project I'm currently working on with a lot less stress, mess and confusion. Thank you. I don't even need to do this, I was looking for hole in wall patch instructions, but hit play on this just to see what he's doing... I could watch this guy work all day! If I ever need to do stuff like this myself, I'd def turn to this channel, he has a great way of explaining, and showing! Very good tutorial person! Thanks and love watching ya work, your obviously a detail oriented craftsman that does things thoroughly and takes pride in your work... I wish the maintenance people (prior to the ones we currently have) at my place was this detail oriented, I wouldn't have a hole in the wall in the first place, bc it reallyyyyy wasn't fixed right, and is such a mess, I'm not even sure if I can fix it! Ugh, all I did was tap it by mistake, moving a box! Anyway, great video!

I really have to say THANK YOU for all the videos you do, I have rewired my basement, I have dry walled the basement I even learned how to mud and tape all the joints of the dry wall all from watching your video's. I used to do this helping my stepdad from his rent houses but since he has passed away I had to google and seen all or most of your videos and relearned most of everything I forgot. So Thank you so much for everything you tapped . I can say I can finally call myself a handy guy for around the house "honey to do lists" If you ever find yourself around the Rockford, IL area look me up and I will take you around town in the helicopter we own. I always use a drop light while mudding and/or sanding to illuminate any ridges or valleys that aren't conspicuous with the naked eye.

For beginners, I suggest lightly damping the tape. I learned taping from an old head carpenter and he had me run the tape through water and use my fingers to 'sqeegee' off the water as it came out of the tub of water. This technique stops the problem of dry pockets in the tape. Also, you don't have to thin the mud on that coat which would be easier for a beginner. Great video, like usual.
For beginners, I would also suggest a bare bulb shining on your work from the side so you can see any imperfections during the finish. If you can't see any imperfections with a harsh side light, you won't see any when the room is lighted during normal use.

You can also run some mud over your tape once it is embedded and clean it off. Keeps bubbles from forming.

Its a nice finish, do you prefer using blades or a trowel? personally i learnt with blades feels like i have more control though trowel seems to get it flatter.

Is it good if you chamfer the butt joint before applying mud. I mean cutting the drywall sheet edge at an angle of 45 degrees?

Could you tell us how much dry time was necessary in between each step?
depends on the temp make sure it aint cold it will crack warm will dry fast
24 hours according to my NCCER classes.
add salt, dont use premix compound unless the top coat. can recoat in 30 mins. Check out some of my videos will teach you how

This is a great way of doing the seams, I can honestly say that I have tried many different ways, and this one I did try and it is by far the best way I have seen so far. Keep sharing your work cause it is great. I have been a carpenter for 20 yrs and I am just now starting to do drywall, mudding and taping to improve my business so that I do not have to sub contract the work out, saves me time and money in the long run. Again great work... :)

The information in this video is great. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. I just learned about is a great mistake I have been making is not letting it dry between coats. I try to rush and get it all done in one day. No wonder I have to sand so much.
I can't wait to try this again. Which will be soon because I am remolding my kitchen. I can't believe non of the other tutorials I have watched mentioned letting the mud dry between coats.

I'm a tape and bedder and that is the weirdest and slowest way I have ever seen someone do this.
Alexander Johnson also a reminder that Shannon isn't a taper he's a carpenter and he does all sorts of work. Not just taping day in and day out.
I do the same work and he's damn good at it.

Thanks for sharing the different stages of each coat application and in a way that is easy to understand, your method will save me a lot of sanding hopefully there won't be any sanding but I'm not a pro so I'm sure I'll have to do some sanding.
