I have enjoyed similar English shoes since 1982. I remember buying a pair of camel skin shoes with Commando soles by Fife for GBP 33.00 in St. Andrews in 1986. Watching your video shows me that the more I think I know, the more I don't know. Happy Christmas to you and yours, and thank you for the video.
I’ve got a pair of Trickers Henry, burnished tan boots, commando sole. They took about a year to break-in, but they are tough and durable. Easy to get on and off (quick). My first choice as i go out the door. Love ‘em. I wished i’d bought a pair ages ago. I normally take size 10. These are just a tad too large, so i just wear a thicker pair of socks and all’s well. I look after them. Last a lifetime.
Lovely boots, on same last as a Bourton so you are to drop 1/2 size usually, but they are also quite wide to accommodate a thicker sock, too wide for me.
Great to see the size comparison! Aside from the price point, sizing is the biggest issue that stops me from buying online, as I can never be sure what shoe size to order.
Another extremely informative video. I have a couple of pairs of Tricksters ( x Sunspel ), and the vault like construction of the boxes they come in tell you all you need to know about the substantial nature of their contents. If you keep those boots well, they'll outlast you.
I’ve tried on Tricker’s and like the style but they are rather wide and so I’ve never found a pair that’s fitted me. Cheaney is a personal favourite of mine and always fits true to size as does Crockett & Jones. The latter part of your video resonated with my experiences!
Yes sounds like you have a similar foot to the cameraman that day, none of them fit him either, but the Cheaneys fit great and the Barker 29 & 464 lasts also.
Bought my Tricker Stow in about 1979. I think they cost around £30. Brilliant boots, but definitely need the commando sole. The leather ones become lethal, and even the steel heels don’t protect you from going on an embarrassing slide from time to time. Great video.
In 2015 I picked up a pair of john white Balmoral impregnables. Presumably not UK made but they are built well, Goodyear welted not like more recent offerings from JW. They were reduced to €140 including shipping to Republic of Ireland. If I didn't have them I reckon I'd be very tempted by those Cheaneys Fabulous video 👏
I have several pairs of Cheaney, Crocket and Jones etc that I bought 20 years ago and they still look good as new really. I hust bought some more Crocket and Jones boots. A big initial outlay but after 20m years of solid wear, they are the cheapest shoes/boots I ever bought.
Interesting reviews. I wear an 8.5UK in the Cheaney Tweed C either in dark leaf or almond grain, but for Tricker's in the 4497, the 8.5UK is too tight in the forefoot around the little toe. I have to take an 8.5UK in the fitting 6.
Thats interesting, have you ever been on a brannock? What size and width did you come back as? Maybe a little stretch would have been sufficient with the Stow, what did a 9 feel like?
I bought a pair of new Tricker boots, I can't remember the exact year I would say at leat 20 years ago, can anyone remember what the going rate was back then, I'm sure mine were under the £200 mark. I still have them and they are in good condition as not worn daily, more than doubled in cost these days. 😮
I think they were about £175 20 years ago 🙄. A customer recently said he bought a pair of Trickers in 1972, and they cost him a full weeks wage! His workmates thought he was mad because they were building a motorway, and he was a really well-paid digger driver. When I told him a Trickers shoe was £565 he thought they were probably cheaper in comparison. He's still wearing them today. 😆 Antony 👍
Is the toe cap double layered? I have an old pair of Loake 1880 Burford with some surface cracks, and I am worried about the watertightness if it is just a single piece of leather.
Sorry for the late reply 🙄 Most of these boots just have one layer of leather on the toe, but under that, there's a toe puff which is stuck in place and quite strong...
Thanks for a great education on these amazing boots! How long will it take me to break in the Cheaney or the Tricker boots? Do you sell your aprons as merch? They’re great looking aprons!
Depends on how manly you are my friend 🤣🤣 we are doing a video on this subject, having given a pair of Joseph Cheaney boots away! Let's see how they do. My mum makes the smocks and we are running short, but happy to send you an old one that's well used ! Antony
Would be lovely to see you, they are beautiful shoes and can last a lifetime. One of our next videos will feature them again, sent in by one of our viewers.
*Video Suggestion* : Most people have one foot slightly larger than the other. Allowing for the larger foot for sizing, what can you do to get the other shoe to fit the smaller foot better ? I've seen online there are inserts you can buy for the toe part of the shoe. But most looked designed for women's shoes. Is there something for gents' more rounded toe shoes that is substantial that you use ? My right foot is a half size smaller than my left foot. For most of my shoes, I can live with it, but with some pairs even a heel pad doesn't work as it just detaches too easily
Hello Czechbound you are absolutely right about slightly odd size feet it can be a real pain 😳 Have a look at this video but please keep sending the ideas. Thank you Antony 😊 th-cam.com/video/MUI_GhpVbx0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EIgqW2f-cyxUWj25
Great idea but if you mean using new shoes, we don’t get enough views to make that worthwhile, maybe there is something we can do while we are stripping them down for repair if we aren’t under pressure to get them sent back.
Great vid 👍🏼 I'm a 10 on the Brannock (and in a trainer), which is 28cm, but am a 9.5F in Cheaney 125 and 12508 last so not quite true to size for me. Definitely get into the shop if you can or order 2 sizes and send back 👍🏼
The “lesser” boot at 7.01 looks like a Loake Bedale (I might be wrong). I have a pair of these and they feel just as solid as you describe the Cheaney and Tricker’s. Are the Cheaney/Tricker’s really that much better than the Loake? Perhaps they are and that’s why you don’t sell Loake shoes? When I can I am going to get to your shop as I do like the Cheaney shape and look and if they are that much better than the Bedale they are going to be amazing! Great videos 👏
*Another Video Suggestion* : I have a new pair of leather soled shoes. But I read recently that it's a good idea to have a slim rubber sole added to protect the leather sole from water and premature wear. Is that your best practice or what do you recommend ? If it should be done, how is the rubber sole attached eg is the leather skived back or not ? is the rubber glued or stitched on ? Just an idea ....

Wouldn’t say just as good no, but they are great boots and nearly half the price. I am looking at buying a pair of Herring brogue boots,I am size 8 medium fit,So my two questions are, should I buy herring boots and what size?.Thank you in advance, great advice.
Difficult one as Herring have their boots made by a variety of different manufacturers, so their sizing must be all over, who makes the one you are interested in? Probably best to speak to them tbh. Have a look at the community post from 3 weeks ago, we have a few new Berwicks which we have not done a video on which have a different toe shape and added mid sole, there is a gorgeous blue one.
@@shoehealer8853 Hi thanks so much for the quick and detailed response.Just looked and the pair I am interested in are made in India.I will probably give them a miss and will take a look at the Berwicks. Thanks again and just subscribed, great channel, interesting and informative.👍🏼
They only came a few weeks ago they are made to order to our spec, 8 pairs of each, there isn’t a video on them and they are not on our website yet, but if you want to look at them properly, if you are on Facebook or instagram they were all posted a few days in a row a few weeks ago. There is one the same as in this video, but with an added midsole. Then there are 3 with a different toe shape, navy smooth leather, black grain and tan gran. Then a very very dark brown almost black cap toe. With the Berwicks you would need to drop 1/2 size at least, maybe even a full size with a narrow foot, if you want to chat about any of them or see if we have your size, we are back on Saturday 10-2 then off again until Friday 3rd January. Thank you for watching and subscribing
It’s hard to say as looking online the Grenson are a G fit,is that correct? all the 3 you mention are a standard width either Trickers 5 or an F fit Cheaney & Barker. The Trickers are true to size but they are very roomy to allow a thick sock, they barely fit Antony and definatly don’t fit the cameraman on this video who both have narrow feet. Trickers also make a Malton which is same looking but a 6 width which is there wide. The Tweed is also true to size, but they say you can drop half a size with a narrow or flat foot and the Calder is generous, people would usually drop 1/2 size into those. You would really need to try some on, do you have any others that fit well?
Kudusole has a video on here comparing Archie and a Trickers Bourton and a C&j, in that video he has 10.5 Archie and a 10.5 Trickers Bourton, and he also mentioned he had a Trickers Stow in a previous video in an 11. This seems decent guidance unless the Archie are too wide for you now, as they say drop 1/2 size into Bourton.

I have the Cheaney boot, but I find all English-made shoes to be poorly fitting, I have never owned a pair of those boots that lace up correctly, too much room between them.
@@shoehealer8853 Thanks for the reply, my instep is not very pronounced, so English-made boots never fit correctly, although American boots such as Red Wing and Chippewa fit my instep great, I'm an 8.5 F fitting, I also find English sizes to be at least one size bigger than they should be I can easily fit a 7.5 F even though I'm an 8.5 F, I love the look but the fit on those boots are not good, I notice the laces on many other people who wear English boots to be the same the laces have zero gap once laced up and that looks bad.
Let's be honest. Owning several pairs of Trickers boots (not the Stow) and the Cheaney Tweed, none of these boots are comparable to proper all leather mountain boots from brands like Scarpa, Zamberlan, Meindl and (British brand made in Yorkshire) Altberg. They really are not intended for proper mountain walking or even "bog trotting" and the soles they (mostly) use reflect that. Nobody is going to climb a mountain with a Dainite, leather or even Ridgeway sole and a Goodyear Welted boot is much less water resistant (regardless of welt) than the bonded construction used by most leather hiking boots (which are still resoleable). I love my traditionally made boots from C&J, Trickers, Cheaney, Berwick, Barker, Loake etc. and have an embarassingly large collection of them but if climbing a mountain, crossing peat bogs or traversing rocky slopes I'll be wearing my Scarpa Delta, Meindl Burma or Raichle Mt Trail boots.
Unknown you've just had me re-watching that video to see if I implied that these boots would be good for serious walkers. They definitely would not stand up against the more modern walking boots available today, your spot on there. But to look smart and traditional in the "mild" countryside, you can't beat a Trickers with commando sole. Ask all the old boy farmers who will wear nothing else, day in day out. Thanks for your input 👍 Antony
@@shoehealer8853 Fair enough. Im always wary when this sort of boot gets mentioned in this way for "countryside " use . Even for shooting where you may have to cross muddy and boggy ground, without a commando sole or similar you'd probably not be happy. Having seen a few videos and seen what *country sports" stores sell nowadays, brands like Meindl, Dubarry and Ariat seem to be the preferred choice of footwear. As mentioned, I love wearing my Cheaney, Trickers, Barker's etc. boots around my local park and on modest country walks but they do have their limitations. BTW, as an English footwear retailer I'd have thought that offering locally made Altberg boots might be an interesting sideline though I am aware some of their products are now made in Italy.

With the Berwicks you would need to drop 1/2 size at least, maybe even a full size with a narrow foot, if you want to chat about any of them or see if we have your size, we are back on Saturday 10-2 then off again until Friday 3rd January. Thank you for watching and subscribing
@@shoehealer8853 That’s wonderful,I will take a look.Happy new year.
I am 7.5 UK in Grenson Archie what size would it be for Trickers Stow or Cheaney Tweed Or Barker ?
Thanks for response. Grenson are my only experience with English (Indian made) brand.@@shoehealer8853
Great vid
Thank you 😊
Can loake brouges be resoled?
Yes of course, that’s the most recent Loake video, there are a few others. 35 Year Old Loake Chelsea Boots Having Commando Sole Rebuild | Boot Tongue Slipping To Side Repair

NO idea why I am watching this with such interest.
Well we appreciate you because we spent all day filming it 😂
Trickers come first by miles in my opinion!
Me tooooo
👍
Quality footwear, 😊
Some of the best....😊 thanks for watching.
Suits you sir
very shouty quite tiring to listen too but great content
Noted!
Put my Loakes boots up against these any day. They fit like a glove.
Loake make some nice boots for the price, but they aren’t at Cheaney or Trickers level, nor should they be, they are £200-300 cheaper.
Trickers= uncomfortable toebox.
Not if they fit right
I have the Cheaney boot, but I find all English-made shoes to be poorly fitting, I have never owned a pair of those boots that lace up correctly, too much room between them.
Your question is in a short video coming soon ...thank you for your input. 👍

Unknown you've just had me re-watching
that video to see if I implied that these boots would be good for serious walkers. They definitely would not stand up against the more modern walking boots available today, your spot on there.
But to look smart and traditional in the "mild" countryside, you can't beat a Trickers with commando sole.
Ask all the old boy farmers who will wear nothing else, day in day out.
Thanks for your input 👍

Just buy some Grensons, far better boots in quality and appearance
Trickers or Cheaney for us, and especially over the made in India range.
You must be joking. Most of Grensons are made in India and are of poor quality
