The cost of this particular repair was £110 including postage as it did not require a new mid sole,if it did need one it’s an extra £10.

I’m considering having a few pairs done because I am unsteady on my feet due to an illness. I find walking on full leather soles lacks the traction I need to walk without feeling I need my stick. However I feel a bit daunted by some of the comments about ruining a good pair of shoes.

It’s all a personal preference, if you like it go for it. I saw them through to the end and they looked great, if you were going for the heavy country look. Apply a darker soft polish or cream with a green pan scrubber sponge, but not the rough side. Very small amount and quite quickly all over. Slowly build it up in the areas you want darker. Must do a video someday!

Never!! And I don't think I ever would. The problem is getting them uniform or anywhere near uniform. I've buggered about with uppers before and always waisted loads of time trying to get the bloody things to match up. Admittedly, not what you're looking to do, but similar. Usually after a repair has gone wrong. Antony

Yes it's a soft calf leather with a half inch band around the top edges....not sure why, but it looked good 👍

Just did a pair of boots yesterday that were slipping in the heel. Thin leather lining around the heel cup with suede side out. Worked perfectly 👌 Always try insoles first, but no good in this case...

I think if I recall the correct video, it was a victory sole we mentioned, not a ridgeway,they look similar. We would say the Dainite and Ridgeway were probably the same compound, just a different pattern. Funnily enough we were just talking about this the other day and we are getting the Loake boots back that were in this video,they were fitted last November and they have done hundreds of miles now. Don’t think many would agree with that, £110 to get a shoe back that almost looks new, and would probably now cost nearly a £1000 if they still made it.

We did a quick video yesterday of burnishing a pair in the tan as they are coming in quite light,will put that out later in the week.

They do make it easier....we will buy a welting machine one day!

The positives for a cover sole are that if you wear your leather sole down now, you are in for a full resole for about £100 (more if you send back to Loake, and they would fit like for like heel stacks,not full leather) If you had a cover sole once you wear through it, you then fit a new one for a 1/4 of that, so it saves you money in long run. Every now and then you will need a heel doing as well and you could add rubber at that point as well if you wanted. It also gives more grip than leather. Paul makes a lovely job of it by shaving the first layer of leather so it fits flush, we see a lot where they just put it on with a lip. Also if you walk in a way that wears the toes down first, consider toe plates, you will find videos and shorts about it before.
