    Hi, thanks for sharing. We are also exploring Portugal while we wait for our eco-friendly house to be completed. We are always surprised at how many hidden gems there are in this beautiful country! I will have to add another one to the list of places to explore 👍

      Yes, Cantanhede town centre is a nice place because of the parks and old buildings. There are a few interesting little shops tucked away too that you can only find if you walk around and explore... 🥰

    Very interesting video! I had never heard of this place, I'm in Vila do Conde just north of Porto.

      Yes, the central part of Cantanhede is actually quite nice. Like always, it seems the older part of cities and towns is more interesting than the modern additions.. 😂

    Poor little dog. I'm glad your mom tries to take care of him. I love dogs too much to move somewhere that has a big stray dog problem because I would be worried sick about all of them all the time. All my dogs throughout my life have been rescues, and they've been wonderful, healthy dogs who were abandoned by irresponsible owners. There are many countries with very serious stray dog populations who need to learn from the Netherlands, who resolved their issue without mass euthanization, and used CNVR - Collect, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return - instead. They no longer have a problem, and dogs are well-cared for there. I wish all dogs were so blessed.❤

      I agree 100%, and it's been very painful for me too, seeing so many dogs, cats and horses suffer terrible neglect here. It is getting better however, as more people are wanting to help the animals, but in rural places there is still neglect and during hunting season, countless dogs are abandoned by hunters, left in wild places or on the side of the road. My mum raised many abandoned dogs over the years. She suffered terribly because of how animals are treated in this country. Farm animals practically have no rights, however, you can at least report dog abuse/neglect now, and it's taken more seriously. Let's hope Southern Europe can learn something from countries like the Netherlands...🥰

    Coppicing of trees is an ancient woodland management technique that was once used to ensure a regular supply of timber and firewood. Today, we use it at many of the places we care for to create a range of habitats for plants and wildlife - dramatically increasing the diversity of species that thrive in these areas, at least according to wiki.

    • @OffTheBeatenTrack7
      @OffTheBeatenTrack7  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I'm well aware of what coppicing is, having worked years as a gardener in English country estates. We are spiritual people, therefore we have a different way of understanding things however. Just because something has been done since ancient times does not mean it's the "best way" to do things. Coppicing in Portugal has become more of an aesthetic fad than a service to wildlife biodiversity... Also, coppicing has to be done correctly even if it's just for wood production.
      🤔😊

      @@antoniocarvalho6160 Very interesting. So many of these things about people's lives back then have been almost forgotten.. In my dad's village, women used to walk to Mira (a 30 minute drive almost) to get sardines etc, then walk back to the village with a full basket. Some would ride a bicycle, which was at least easier.

    The stray and abandoned dogs are a disgrace to the people living in the area and in Portugal in general.
    That is the reason i have NOT been back to Portugal in 20 years.
    Portuguese people treat dogs and other animals like crap.
    Sorry to say it, but I am Portuguese.

    • @OffTheBeatenTrack7
      @OffTheBeatenTrack7  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes. I can totally agree with you. It should be treated as criminal. It’s also why I never wanted to live in Portugal. We’re only here to help my dying father, but the suffering of animals here is very traumatising for me..

      Rural European culture doesn’t view pets like the USA. Here in America we can afford to spend a great deal of money on our pets and allow them privileges like a seat at a restaurant table, rural Europe especially Portugal until very recently could barely put food on the table for family. Wealthy people in major cities were more likely to anthropomorphize their pets, you can see examples of this at the Lisbon pet cemetery.

    • @kappa2ou3
      @kappa2ou3 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It’s not only in Portugal, in the United States, in addition to treating animals badly, they also treat people like animals.

      @@Veriatos I suppose it's a matter of understanding and choice. My husband is from a village in Northern India, and for the most part, people did/do not own much in terms of material things, or sometimes even food (for some) yet they find a way to care for and respect their animals... Because they view the lives of other living beings as sacred and worthy of respect. It all stems from good or bad teachings that filter into a given society at any given time period (usually perverted religious belief systems). But it's up to people as individuals to choose to follow a higher, more ethical and compassionate path in life or a lower/baser, fear-driven one...We do have a choice...🐈🐔🐕🐣🐸
