Off The Beaten Track
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 24 ม.ค. 2024
We are currently in Portugal, helping my elderly parents. We love to explore and experience places off the beaten track - both modern, old, mysterious and downright weird. We love all things natural, simple, magical, mysterious and just plain wonderful, and a BIT of history too (BUT, this is NOT a history channel :)!.
We invite you to sit back and enjoy visiting places vicariously around Europe . Walking, driving and seeing how things are away from the overly famous tourist places and crowds. Sometimes we get a chance to visit more dramatic locations, while other times we just stay home, go for a walk around town, a village, or sit and talk about our experiences, our views on things, natural foods we harvest, and what grows locally.
Our first vlog videos will focus on different experiences around Portugal, and as we go, we will add more places along the way. So take time out, relax and join us..

Piodao - Mountain Village in the Magical Misty Serra Do Acor Hills of Northern Portugal
A charming, unique, schist and slate historic village, located in the Serra do Acor mountains of northern Portugal - Piodao is surrounded by misty, mountainous hills, with running streams, clean air, and breathtaking views.
The village can be explored on foot, since it’s located on a hillside, and you need to walk up old, stone steps that meander maze-like, all up the village slopes, along narrow little streets.
Piodao is located in the Arganil area, Coimbra district. The village is known as the “Nativity Scene Village.” It’s part of the “12 Historic Villages of Portugal” government program founded in 1991, with the aim of restoring this series of ancient, Beira interior mountain villages - supposedly even older that Portugal itself.
Evidence suggests there was once a Cistercian 13th century monastery in the area. The village location was in fact so difficult to get to (even today it’s only accessible by winding roads with very steep drop areas on some locations - making it dangerous. Most people get there by bus excursions), that it was practically unknown to the rest of the country for centuries.
We loved it there, and plan to return to explore more after the rainy season, and go on some long walks - since there is much of the natural landscape to explore in the surrounding hills.
We suggest visiting when the weather is drier, and not in the winter when roads may be icy. Some roads are quite narrow, with an almost practically sheer drop on one side, which in heavy rains or freezing temperatures could be very dangerous, and best avoided.
It’s the most breathtaking, magical, mysterious, and natural place we’ve been to so far in Portugal. We highly recommend it if you love quirky, magical, Harry-Potter/Lord of the Rings type places, hewn into the natural landscape as if by a wizard’s incantations… :)

The earth's bounty is a wonder indeed. Today we went back to the land to pick some of the last totally organic crops for this year. Still lots of peppers, tomatoes, egg plants, lettuce, cabbages and more. Figs are at the last stages of ripeness and need to be picked before the rain comes, and berries are ready to harvest. Later in the year, olives will be ripe and ready to make olive oil. Water...

Just this minute making a video of a bug hunt we did in Arganil last week and was looking for the name of something and your video popped up lol (not the town, on the outskirts where the forests are) Good stuff.
Bugs are fascinating. There are lots of different spiders here too. We recently saw a large one with a Templar cross marking on its back!! Beautiful creature.
Poor little dog. I'm glad your mom tries to take care of him. I love dogs too much to move somewhere that has a big stray dog problem because I would be worried sick about all of them all the time. All my dogs throughout my life have been rescues, and they've been wonderful, healthy dogs who were abandoned by irresponsible owners. There are many countries with very serious stray dog populations who need to learn from the Netherlands, who resolved their issue without mass euthanization, and used CNVR - Collect, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return - instead. They no longer have a problem, and dogs are well-cared for there. I wish all dogs were so blessed.❤
I agree 100%, and it's been very painful for me too, seeing so many dogs, cats and horses suffer terrible neglect here. It is getting better however, as more people are wanting to help the animals, but in rural places there is still neglect and during hunting season, countless dogs are abandoned by hunters, left in wild places or on the side of the road. My mum raised many abandoned dogs over the years. She suffered terribly because of how animals are treated in this country. Farm animals practically have no rights, however, you can at least report dog abuse/neglect now, and it's taken more seriously. Let's hope Southern Europe can learn something from countries like the Netherlands...🥰
Thank you for sharing this. I was so excited about this beautiful area...until you mentioned the fires. That would terrify me. I've seen the videos of people trying ot escape Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge during that horrible wildfire they had, and many were unable to make it out of the mountains with very similar roads to these. I just found more information on the fires on the Safe Communities Portugal page on Facebook. Very scary!
Yes, it really is worth considering and taking seriously. Sadly, apparently many if these fires are started on purpose. Worse one was in the Pedrogao Grande area, in 2017, where many people died in their cars trying to get away from the fires along a country road bordered by eucalyptus plantations. You have to do your research before making a decision to buy property or stay long term. Fires were not really a problem in the old days before they planted eucalyptus/pine in such huge numbers everywhere. Further South and Alentejo are probably safer in this regard...
❤ is not so far from Tomar.
True, it's quite close...☺️
Just a small correction: Piódão and Serra do Açor are located in central Portugal, not in northern Portugal.
Thank you for the info. We also thought it was, but we checked on a website about Piodao, and it said it was Northern Portugal, so I think they made a mistake too and we copied them...😅 Now we know!!

Santa Barbara County, USA here. Portuguese girl born in LIsboa, living in the wild west. :) I miss Portugal. Living off the land in peace and quiet and not worrying about the shootings. When I was a girl, we were poor, and for a while we lived in a rural area called Torres Vedras. My mom only made 2 meals a day, and my sisters and I made our own breakfast, sandwiches and chocolate milk. As a teenager, I would be so hungry, but there was not much else to eat throughout the day. So I'd go roaming around my neighbors' yards and climbing up the fruit trees and eat fruit sitting on the branches, until I felt like my belly would explode. lol Peaches, apricots, figs, oranges, lots of grapes of all kinds, pine nuts, etc. Whatever was in season and available. We would sometimes go into a corn field and eat the little baby corns right there in the middle of it, between the stalks, we'd hide there and make a little bonfire to roast it. We would get into so much trouble if we got caught. Some neighbors were so welcoming and would even send me home with a bag of extra fruits, but once in a while one of them was mean and would chase us off the yard. :) The important thing is, we didn't go hungry. A lot of people were poor, but they shared what they had. I am still like that. I really like your serene videos. Enjoy Portugal. 💚💛❤
Yes, I remember that too. The rural village life, the amazing fruit trees, but also the poverty. My grandmother was a poor peasant, Pagan woman (she pretended to be Catholic)who couldn’t read or write. She lived in a tiny house, no electricity, gas or running water. She got her water from a “fonte” in a big container, which she would then carry home on her head. She was a tough woman, but loved animals. I was fortunate enough to live with her for about 3 years of my life, and she was my teacher, I learned so much from her. I too lived in the US for many, many years (all over, including Hawaii) and I know what you mean about the feeling of ever-present danger over there. The strange lack of security. The brutal laws etc. In Portugal you just don’t feel that way. 🥰

I wish they didn't spoil these beautiful, natural areas. They need to bring back the "tipico", natural look to architecture in these places. Have market stalls and quaint family businesses selling local arts and crafts. Nice campsites, and rustic cabins etc. While some places like Praia do Poco da Cruz, should be left as natural and untouched as possible. But alas, money talks etc....
Another Karen complaining without even knowing the history and not even bothering to think rationally about it. If you're going to make a woke video, please mention who you are and where you come from. Your country was born out of war, almost exterminated an indigenous race, killed its own president, was the only country in the world to drop two atomic bombs, is the country with the most atomic bombs, has more military bases than all the countries in the world combined, since the Vietnam War it has been the country that has invaded and completely destroyed the most foreign countries just to steal its natural resources. It is the country that exports the most racism, including the white race, through its woke policies, and culturally destroys other countries, including itself. It is the country that exports and exploits a lifestyle that is most harmful to public health, the one that produces the most medicines and viruses, the most violence, the most weapons, and many other things that I would spend the whole day writing about... so keep these woke comments to yourself and reflect that you are in a country that welcomed you in the best way it could find, and there is a very well-known proverb of ours: "If you are not well, move"
Very nice video❤
❤
You are living in a semi paradise, a very nice video.
Yes, it is a kind of paradise, but like everywhere else, it certainly has its challenges...🙄😀🥰
So nice
I disagree with you on diversity of cultures though, the reason why Portugal is magic is because it’s Portuguese and full of Portuguese people. London is diverse, it’s an awful hell on earth.
Actually, the expat people I know here are doing wonderful things, such as helping animals, replanting native forests and helping bring back natural biodiversity, supporting arts and crafts etc. As far as I’m concerned, that’s the best kind of culture there is - where human beings express their creativity together in a positive way that gives back to other people, animals and nature, instead of focusing on exploitation for profit only.
@@OffTheBeatenTrack7That’s just good people doing good things, it doesn’t have to be diverse to do that, I think what I’m trying to say is diversity as a thing in itself isn’t necessarily a good thing, I don’t think insular monocultures are anything to strive for, but saying that, differences between places is what makes them interesting, I’d hate the Idea of Portugal becoming like global London and having no Portuguese identity at all.
It’s modernity you have an issue with, I couldn’t agree with you more, when you find tranquility, and all of a sudden some moron decides to park up right next to you and destroy the tranquility, despite miles and miles of open space where they could listen to dreadful music on their tin box mobile phone speaker to their heart’s content…I think part of this is why people who have at least a portion of a functioning brain don’t want to live forever.
I guess there are all sorts of mentalities around. Some take, and think only about themselves, but fortunately, some give in wonderful ways…😊

Hello 👋
Hi !
Hope you have somewhere cool to store them spuds as the heat here will dry them out.is better to leave then in the ground untill Sep, then harvest before the rain returns or they will grow again and after today's thunderstorms I bet you wish you hadn't watered. Have been here 5 summers so have learned by my mistakes., but further north in Guarda county where the rainfall is slightly higher.
That's interesting, thanks for the tip. Some were already starting to rot in the ground, I think they should have been planted deeper though, then perhaps we could have left them in the ground. Live and learn! 🤔🙄🥰
@@OffTheBeatenTrack7 I didn't cistern to your video as no sound card on desktop, Are you in Castelo Branco county as most land there because is cheap. There is a good reason for that as the water is less and the heat is more. You can plant spuds here in late Jan or early Feb and any earlies or lates as they all grow at the same speed I started digging mine on 28/4 and main crop I am a retired pro market gardener so if you need help or advice please ask freely.
