- Join us for 4 days in Madeira, an island in Portugal, which is a 2 hours flight from Lisbon. We visit Funchal, the islands capital, the local farmers market, some stunning botanical and tropical gardens, ride the cable car, and go on two beautiful hikes. One across a bunch of waterfalls known as PR6 - Levada das 25 Fontes and the other, known as PR1 - Pico do Arieiro, a hike which is best seen at sunrise. Also in this video, I cover a bunch of tips for those thinking of visiting - renting a car, hiking information, public transport, and more.

Hey, amazing footage.
But the title is wrong, Madeira isnt know as the Hawaii of Europe, never in my life i heard that and i live here .
It is know as the Atlantic Pearl as long as i remember.
More or less , the place in Portugal that actually look closer to Hawaii, would be Azores Islands, not Madeira islands.

Hey thanks. Yeah I hear you. The reason I mention it is that (possibly due to the transfer of information online) but that reference is out there about Madeira online. The main reason I included it is I watched a TH-cam who was from Hawaii and she made the comparison herself and said often she would feel like certain views were just like Hawaii. So that was enough for me. But I hear your point.

When we visited Madeira, we took the toboggan basket ride in Funchal and it was fantastic - we enjoyed it so much so I highly recommend it!

I love madeira. People are so friendly. We did the Risco and Lafonte 25 hike and it is not for the tainted heart. You have to be in pretty good shape to hike around 2000 feet elevation and staircases. It was amazing

Love gardens and waterfalls so I'll have to add this place to my bucket list. The red railings were a beautiful architectural detail in that landscape.
Careful if you visit the gardens...I would advise you not to touch the plants ( like I did) because I got bitten and needed medical attention!

My family goes back over 400 years in Madeira, Portugal, and after seeing the island in person, I'm convinced they were part mountain goat! The steep and narrow roads, and steep and narrow walkways, make it difficult to get around. It's nothing like Hawaii. (Mrs.Rugby)
Ditto on that distinction. Hawaii it's not - for those of us who have lived in both places. Yes, both are islands, but that's where the similarities end for many, many reasons. Video is nice. However to all who view - best be informed, visiting for four days is not the same as living here. And any comparison to Hawaii is a dangerous stretch as an argument. If only . . . and I'll leave it at that

Another great video! I love the idea of renting a Smart - I had one for 10 years. We visited Madeira back in the late 80s. Stayed at the Casino Park. It was the week before Christmas and warm enough to swim in the gorgeous outdoor pool! We met Roy Barraclough in the bar. When he discovered that I wasn't feeling well, he bought me a Fernet-Branca, telling me it would settle my stomach. How thoughtful. A nice memory. :)

I'm currently trying to decide whether to take a 1-week trip to Madeira or Milan/Rome in April and this video is making me lean towards Madeira for sure. It's so beautiful! 😍
Milan is not very nice so wouldn't recommend there
How about Rome and then down to Sicily. Beautiful island with great Greek ruins in Agrigento. You can get the train there from mainland Italy.

Rome is cool, but I'm sorry there's just no way I'm choosing Milan or Rome over Madeira. Especially if I have 1 week, I'm trying to wake up everyday and feel like I'm in paradise.

I go to Madeira at least once a year, usually more, and used to be there for 2 months every summer when I was younger. As a half-Madeira native, I appreciate your video. A tip for 25Fontes. Get started early. We got picked up at our hotel in Funchal at 6.00 and we were alone at the waterfall. We passed hundreds on the way back.
