You need nerves of steel to do that, in spite of the speed of the water carrying the boat along the captain still has to keep power up and go even faster than the water is flowing to steer and maintain control.
It's all relative... With a engines you always go faster then the water.aim for the middle and the water wil keep you there ...
@@101garfield Yep I'm aware of that, it's the same with flying which I do a lot of, your groundspeed is your airspeed plus minus the speed that the air is moving, which is the reason takeoff and landing is always into wind wherever possible so your groundspeed is lower which effectively makes the runway longer and gives you more time to react to things. The case is the same for navigating boats through these dam gates.
@@ats-3693 yep. Funny thing is... With boats you can reverse the engine and go slower than water. Only the sterring is reversed.

There is one on the Rhone in France where the water deflects off the wall under the water and hits the keel of your boat so you have to go like hell, wheel right, then wheel full left, max power to stop the back of the boat getting smashed into the opposite bank and then full right to straighten it up.
Ive done it twice in a wooden yacht and its terrifying.
