  • Doug wasn't a fan of the final (?) Toy Story film when it came out. Is it possible his opinion of it has gotten softer over time? Let's take a look at Toy Story 4.
    Toy Story 4 is a 2019 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It is the fourth installment in Pixar's Toy Story series. It was directed by Josh Cooley (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Andrew Stanton and Stephany Folsom; the three also conceived the story alongside John Lasseter, Rashida Jones, Will McCormack, Valerie LaPointe, and Martin Hynes. The film stars the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Madeleine McGraw, Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves, Ally Maki, Jay Hernandez, Lori Alan, and Joan Cusack.

      Definitely. I had heard going into the movie to look at it from the perspective of it being an epilogue and I think that improved my experience. It felt much more like a "and here's what happened afterwards" than a full sequel and I appreciated that. It was more contained as a story and almost went full-circle because it focused so much on Woody and Buzz, going back to the roots of the first movie.

    What bothered me the most was how Woody gave up so easily on the idea of being a kid's toy after Bonnie stopped playing with him. Like, did he just forget his experiences from the first film when Andy chose Buzz over him?

    • @gageperuti5519
      @gageperuti5519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    • @jerelminter
      @jerelminter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@gageperuti5519 Yes, the problem is that Woody gave up on Bonnie in just a few days of not being played with. However, in Toy Story 3, Woody and the gang stayed in that toy chest in Andy's room _FOR YEARS,_ yet he insisted they stay together even though Andy stopped playing with them a long time ago. A lot longer than Bonnie I might add, what the hell ?

    • @bowmaj8666
      @bowmaj8666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I think it's more the idea that Woody learns that he's never going to have the same kind of connection with Bonnie as he did with Andy, no matter how hard he tries! And ultimately, he's learning to be his own person, to do the things that make him happy instead of dedicating his entire life to someone else, especially someone who doesn't really appreciate him back.

      I don't think it was as easy a thing for him to do as you think it was. The whole movie was less about him "giving up on being a kids toy" and more about him finding out that there's more to life then what you know and what you've always known. He didn't want to give up on Bonnie and he was trying to stay loyal to Bonnie throughout the whole movie but over time he started thinking "hey maybe my job as a toy is over so... what do i do now?" I look at this movie as a epilogue more then a sequel. I also see Woody's journey in this movie as a metaphor for retirement and moving on from what your job was from day 1. The movie isn't the best of the Toy Story franchise and i personally liked the 3rd one the most but this one is still very very good.

      I liked Gabby Gabby too. Honestly, it's one thing I very much appreciated because the (frankly) hellish torture of the villains in 2 and 3 was honestly kind of disgusting to me and lessened the enjoyment of both films to me. Especially since they were unfortunately just as psychologically damaged as Jessie was, but somehow it's okay when horrific torture happened to characters who, yeah, went too far; but weren't exactly beyond redemption.

    I think that the biggest problem I have with this movie is the portrayal of Bonnie and her dismissive attitude towards Woody. Now on the one hand I get what they were going for, she's just a kid, and a kid's interests can change very quickly; they can be totally obsessed with something one minute and have no interest in it the next. I also like how they treat Woody's dilemma, and the idea that Bonnie is not Andy, and he's never going to have the same kind of connection with her as the one he had with Andy, no matter how hard he tries. The problem that I have is that we spent a good portion of Toy Story 3 establishing that Bonnie was the perfect new owner for Andy's toys, and that she would love and take care of them. So after all of that I just can't imagine Bonnie going "Oh I lost my Woody doll! Meh, who cares, I'VE GOT A SPORK!"

      Honestly, i don't think it's amazing, but it does do some nice things.
      Like bringing Bo-Peep back (who had no decent justification to just be removed offscreen in 3 anyway,) and Woody's newfound self worth issues, stuff like the concept of creating a toy and the existential crisis that Forky has.
      But I feel like the times it steps away from Woody, Bo-Peep and Forky is where it kinda falls flat. Buzz is the only other character with substantial screentime (and those two new plushies,) and the inner voice running joke has the same problem as the Spanish thing from Toy Story 3 where it overstays its welcome hard.
      That being said, the villain this time I couldn't stand. Like, Lotso in 3 was also pretty bad, but at least while he was a douchebag it was funny to see that at the end of it all, he ends up in a miserable situation (and like with the Prospector he wasn't established as an antagonist right away, and was able to work with that deception.)
      Gabby Gabby's entire justification for convincing Woody to give up his voice box was just bad. It's literally "hey, I was born with a birth defect, so you should give up something you have because you've already had good times," and I'm sorry, but that only makes her look entitled and shitty. I loved it when she gets rejected by that one girl that she fixated on after all that and was broken down, because she had it coming for trying to steal Woody's voice box because she felt like she deserved it more than him because she had a defect out of the box.
      I did like the scene, at the end with the lost child, but for most of the film, I couldn't stand the entitlement she felt about taking away Woody's Voice Box.

    My biggest issue with this movie is the way it completely cheapens the ending of the third movie.
    You remember how beautiful it was when Andy gave Woody to Bonnie, and she promised to take good care of him? And the film ended on a great note with the implication that Woody would be in good hands? Well, in this film, Bonnie completely breaks her promise, neglecting Woody and not even caring that he's missing at the end, thus rendering Andy's sacrifice completely moot, and Woody would've been better off going to college with Andy.

    • @Spindler2007

    • @grizzly_manbanimation8436
      @grizzly_manbanimation8436 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      If I’m being honest, Bonnie just shoving woody aside like she didn’t even care for him seemed completely out of character for her. I mean think about it in the previous movie she really took to him and loved him. You could see it in the first play time they ever shared. Something like that does not just go away. You can say all you want that as time goes by they grow apart but not much time has passed considering how young she still is in this movie. Yes I do imagine that if Andy ever visited Bonnie and asked how the toys were doing and she showed him he would notice for sure that woody was missing and will not be happy to learn she lost him he might not show a lot of emotion about it because she’s five and her mom would likely defend her. But he would still be in the right mind of being upset when he trusted his cowboy doll with her. Yes she is five and in this case broke a promise.Because of that alone it’s hard to get mad at her for it. But that won’t change the fact that andy’s woody doll is now gone and he has no idea where he is and will likely never see him again. That’s only half the complaint I have the other half being the aforementioned out of character thing. I just don’t feel like a little girl like Bonnie who really took to Woody when she first got him would’ve just shove them aside like he meant nothing by the second movie she’s in.

    *Spoilers ahead!*
    TOY STORY PART 4 has the great animation, good performances and funny jokes we've come to expect from the franchise, but the ending is a complete betrayal. The previous 2 installments made the central theme clear: No matter the toys' fate, as long as they're together, everything will be alright for them. Here, WOODY leaves them. Yes, he chooses his love for BO, but why must he? This is the case of a script writer coming up with a new story direction and then adding new elements (BO not wanting an owner and BONNIE not wanting to play with WOODY) in order to make said direction possible. If you have to add those elements, then it's not as organic. Another recurring theme is that the love an owner gives to a toy outweighs the negative aspects (such as having to say goodbye to the kid). This sequel focuses a little more on the idea that a toy can have a big impact in a kid's life (including making them brave). That's interesting, but it also ends up adding to the problematic ending. WOODY is now part of a gang of toys who make sure other toys will have an owner (including BUNNY & DUCKY, even though they were desperately searching for a kid the whole movie and I expected them to go with BONNIE... what happened there?). Cool idea... for a stand-alone movie. And if that's going to be your justification for this ending, don't introduce this idea during the end credits scene, as if it was an afterthought. While we're on that subject, the movie began with BONNIE creating a new toy because she felt she couldn't make friends at kindergarten. The plot then becomes about a road trip with different subplots and BONNIE's issue isn't brought up again until another end credits scene, taking place when she's in 1st grade. She has made yet another toy for the same reasons. Isn't one of Pixar's rules that the adventurous and/or comedic sequences must be secondary to the personal problems, especially the everyday ones? Hell, there already was a Pixar movie that dealt with all this in a much better way. In the original movie, BUZZ LIGHTYEAR didn't realize at first that he was a toy, but he had the personality/thoughts/memories of a regular adult. It wouldn't have made sense back then for him to claim that he didn't know what an inner voice is, let alone confuse it with his voice box. The fact that it happens after being sentient for 10 or so years is mind-boggling! When the toys mess with the family's RV, a lot of chaos ensues and the cops show up. It's implied that BONNIE's parents told them the truth about it malfunctioning and that they thought "Well, they have a little kid inside, so it's unlikely they would do all this on purpose." That being said, they just leave. Shouldn't they have called a mechanic or something to take a look? We're talking about a dangerous and uncontrollable machine!
    7/10

      The line everyone remembers from the first film: "You are a toy!!!". The line I take away from the first: "Doesn't matter how much we're played with. What matters is that we're here for Andy when he needs us, that's what we're made for right?" Aside from all kinds of story problems, I'd forgive them if it wasn't for the ending. Completely goes against everything built up over the past three movies. If you go back and listen to Woody and Buzz's lines about being a toy, they go against everything done in this film. The idea of lost toys breaks what was established in the other films. They all became villains. Would've been an interesting twist if Bo was the villain, but it would probably have been just as stupid. I can watch the other 3 films anytime, I have no desire to ever watch this film again. It's not the worst Pixar film, but certainly the biggest disappointment.

      @@billyjoelfan100 I honestly have to agree with Billy on this one. It had always been their passion, their duty, their purpose that they embraced so dear, were to please children. Not just Andy, but Bonnie too. Part of why 3 was so nifty to me was because despite through it all, they did it to please a child. I could look past the Bo-peep, I can look past the feminizism weirdness some people say it has, I can work past the money sniffing portion of it, I can work past the fact that a few of the voice actors are fading/dying/dead, but I can't excuse how they throw everything off the course here. This ending in this circumstance causes a huge ripple in everything, and it really ain't for me. I'm to simple to try to figure this movie out, so i'll make it brief: Toy story ended at 3.
      3/10, like the others have stated, great CGI, but no value or merit, or even any real purpose. Heck, they didn't even have Lasseter for a good bit of the production in this movie, he left. Unnessecary, Useless, Graphically Stunning, maybe great for young kids (which is how disney sells) but not for somebody like Doug, or Billy, or Me, or probably anybody born prior to 2000.

      Like bringing Bo-Peep back and Woody's newfound self worth issues, stuff like the concept of creating a toy and the existential crisis that Forky has.

    One of the things I love about this movie is the villain. First of all, she's not a twist villain or some random jerk like every other Disney and Pixar movie these days. She spends a good portion of the movie as a villain, which is something we rarely see.
    Second, she goes through the exact opposite change. Characters like Hans, Bellewether, and even Ernesto De La Cruz go from being a good guy or even just an ally to the leads to being the villain. Gabby goes from being the villain to being someone we feel for, someone we want to see have a happy ending.
    Which leads to my final point: her happy ending, in my opinion, is the best scene in the whole movie. It's so emotionally investing that I get teary-eyed every time. It's just a beautiful scene, and it makes us feel good for Gabby. This is something Disney needs to do more.

    But I couldn’t. Oddly enough, I left the theatre kinda disappointed in Pixar. Then I found out why. The way it handles the characters except for Woody and Gabby Gabby is bland for some reason and the ending is ruined by the fact that Bonnies PLAYS with Woody during the road trip and that Forky would not have been made had it not been for Woody.
    Finding Dory was definitely unnecessary but the way it was EXECUTED made it an actual good watch here and then. It could have gone wrong and become bland at any time but it didn’t. This however felt the exact opposite.

      I agree with everything you just said.
      I LOVE the Toy Story trilogy. I think the animation and the characters and the story only got BETTER as the films went on. The story was infused with emotion and creativity and charm and these characters became MUCH MORE than mere pixels on a screen. By the end of the third movie, they truly felt like friends. We cared about them....which is why we all cried at Toy Story 3. I was exactly Andy's age when the first Toy Story came out and when Toy Story 3 came out, I was also going off to college (with my Disney movies in a box in my car) and saying goodbye to childhood. So I KNEW how he was feeling. I may be crazy....but I did NOT like Toy Story 4. AT ALL. The animation was stunning, but I didn't care for much of anything else about it. It felt....very cheap and hollow after the journey I have been on with these characters. And there were WAY to many new characters. The second movie introduced 3 characters (2 of whom have remained in the series....Jessie, Bullseye and the Prospector) and we liked Jessie and Bullseye. The third movie introduced a lot of characters, but they were smart in focusing on a select few (like Lotso and Ken and Bonnie's toys so it wasn't so overwhelming). Unlike Buzz and Jessie from 1 and 2, I could not warm up to Forky as a character. I didn't find anything charming or endearing about him. He was literal trash and he made it VERY clear that he didn't want to be there. And I honestly don't remember any of the other characters' names or what made them so necessary to the story. The villain doll was....decent....but then even THAT felt half-baked compared to other villains. I thought the Bo Peep plot line was ABSOLUTELY ridiculous and unneeded....especially them running into her YEARS later because they just HAPPENED to be in the same amusement park. And honestly, as much as they tried to reignite whatever romantic spark was shared between her and Woody, I never ONCE got the impression that SHE actually still had feelings for Woody. If anything, she seemed very annoyed by his being there. Like he was an unwelcome intruder in her new life and she had moved on. And this is half the reason that I HATED HATED HATED HATED Woody's decision to go with HER at the end rather than stay with Bonnie. It really pisses me off because I felt like it went against ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that Woody's character has stood for in the last 3 movies. His mantra has always been "Being there for Andy/Bonnie when they need us" and I felt to completely ignore that and choose the girl was a complete insult and disservice to his character.....and it felt like a very cheap way of writing Woody out of any potential sequels (which lets face it....there ARE going to be more sequels so long as these films make money....because that's all Disney cares about now. Money and sequels/remakes. It was never about being the "favorite toy"...at least after the first film. After all, in the first one, Buzz became the favorite. Honestly, they should have just let the story end at the third one. It was a perfect ending to a perfect trilogy..

      Nine_Tails137. Woody said that BEFORE his play time with Andy got reduced with the new Buzz Lightyear. You know, the whole plot of the first one being Woody being jealous of Buzz? He just said that so the other toys will stop worrying about new toys, but Woody himself was really confident he wouldn’t be replaced. So how does TS4 throw that line out the window when Woody was feeling the same way in the very first one? Needless to say you’ve completely missed the point. Woody had character development as before he measured his self worth by being beloved by a kid, in TS4, he found a new purpose with Bo, he was still very loyal to Bonnie despite Bonnie not even being interested in him as a toy. But Bonnie doesn’t need him, Andy doesn’t need him, so he found a new purpose with Bo.

      @@Musiclover19 No, I haven't forgotten Woody's Jealousy towards Buzz Lightyear in the first movie. But near the end of the first film he also says to Buzz: "Over in that house is a kid who thinks you are the greatest, and it's not because you're a space ranger pal! it's because you're a Toy. You are "his" Toy!"
      Also, the whole "Finding a new purpose with Bo", feels like he's just abandoning Bonnie, Buzz and the other toys.
      I know I'm probably in the minority here, but Toy Story 3 ended on a high note. Meaning I couldn't think of anything more the creators could do to make it any better than it already was?

And he's not abandoning Buzz, are you serious? People move all the time either due to a relationship/marriage, school, a career, etc. Buzz understands this, heck HE'S the one who pushes Woody to go back to Bo Peep because as a true friend would he wants Woody to be happy and knows he and the others can take care of Bonnie. When I watched Toy Story 3 I was let down by the ending. I wanted it to be Andy going to college and the screen fades to black. Then you hear a knock on the door and a new scene fades in with a point of view shot of a man holding a camcorder and he pushes open the door as a reprise of "You've Got a friend in me" plays. You see a boy playing with Andy's toys and the boy embarrassed says "Dad!" You hear Andy laughing saying "Pretend I'm not here" like his mom and he sets the camera down and you see him joining his kid. His wife calls out for Andy and their son for dinner and Andy and their boy say in unison they'll be there in five minutes. You see the camera zoom on Andy holding Woody and his son holding Buzz. Woody and Buzz give a wink at each other and the scene fades into black and the credits roll.
    Then Toy Story 4 arrives and I fear it's another cash grab with a half-effort storyline. Instead it was the perfect ending when I realized the whole Toy Story franchise was about Woody in his personal journey.

    The film completely steps on what the series established: "Life's only worth living if you're being loved by a kid..." Woody's actions are completely out of character, Buzz is a drooling idiot and Bo is a completely different character -- and I don't just mean when they meet her later on. The flashback scene doesn't work because it implies that Bo was this headstrong "go-getter" from the beginning when she wasn't. She was the quiet maiden. She was Little Bo Peep! If we're talking rehashing 4 is WAY more original than 3. 3 was literally the exact same plot beat for beat with thew kindergarten replacing Al's place and Lotso replacing Stinky Pete. I like 4 for having the guts to be original when 3 was mainly good because the Woody and Andy parts which were very good, everything else was a ripoff of 2.

    Toy Story 4 made Bo Peep unlikeable, it made Woody a pushover, it made Buzz an idiot, it didn't give Gabby Gabby the comeuppance she deserved, it expected us to believe that a child would actually care that much about a spork with googly eyes (as if), and it made Bonnie a liar who broke the promise she made to Andy at the end of Toy Story 3.

    Toy Story 4 was made because the crew felt like they still had more to tell. Like one of the commenters said, it’s best to view this as a epilogue then a legit sequel. With that view, it’s a great epilogue to the trilogy.

    My problem with this movie is that woody did a complete 180 flip with woody’s values. In all of toy story 3 woody is saying how important it is to be with your owner no matter how much you’re played with. Then in this movie woody isn’t played with for a few times he decides to just leave. The woody I know and love wouldn’t just leave his owner for the hot blonde.

I hope the sequel can successfully introduce Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang to a younger generation while maintaining the excellent quality of writing and directing that made the outstanding trilogy one of my aspirations to become an actor. I wish this movie had just been it's own thing. I loved Bo Peep, the plushies, the villain doll, and Keanu Reeves. They could've left out all of the other toys entirely and still have the same story. Just make Bo the main character.
    The worst thing about Toy Story 4 is that it ruins the end of the third. Woody could've gone with Andy if this was the outcome. Woody leaves his family, and that's what ruins TS4 for me.

To top it off, Bo’s behavior towards Woody was pretty, um… let’s say… toxic. And also, I hate the message that the creators made with Gabby Gabby’s character. You shouldn’t have to fix whatever flaws you have if you want to be truly loved by someone. (I hate messages like that!!!)

    I actually like the what they did with Gabby Gabby. They didn't do some build-up to this big twist that she was the villain this whole time, like so many other Disney movies. They just established it in one scene, with as little build-up as possible.
    And really, she wasn't a villain even for very long, rather just a desperate toy looking to be loved by a kid. She certainly didn't behave like a typical villain either, she pretty much kept her sweet tone throughout. And she didn't even get some kind of comeuppance at the end. In fact, this was one of the few times a "villain" gets exactly what she wanted!
    All this culminates to what I believe is the most sympathetic antagonist in Pixar's history.

      yeah but at least el camino didn't advertise as an ultimate sequel to breaking bad it what just a spin off like better call saul. Plus unlike toy story 4 it had a reason to exist, give pinkman a propper end that was unsolve in the show (even vince gilligan admited he didn't have time to develop an ending for pinkman in the last episode) this one outside of woody ending didn't have an excuse to be called toy story 4 after how solid the third one ended.
