Salt & Tar: Episode 72-Drying Out

- Thanks to Leo the bottom sanding got done in a single day leaving us time to complete more projects. The bottom paint is a year old and it's standard on a wooden boat to haul out every year and reapply to keep it fresh preventing hard growth. Since Rediviva first launched last November she's grown a lot. Her swelling and getting settled into life on the water moved her planks which was to be expected. She's now been out of the water for 4 months so all that swelling and drying has caused the paint to chip and flake off. No big deal. We have to sand it anyway! All part of the "labor of love" everyone's always telling us about ;)
Thanks for watching!

Boat coming along rather nicely. Weldon guy's 👍😀🍺🇿🇦
Happiness is.... a healthy Swab!!! 💜👍😎 👌
The brightwork is really coming out beautiful. Slowly but surly she is coming together. One day you'll be sailing the deep blue and the memories will last a lifetime.
So glad to see you guys get an extra set of hands, many hands make light work,😁. Love the boat.
Richard Sims makes a very good point, except if I were you, I would not wait, I would router the bottom edge of the cap rails now. I would also suggest that eye protection should be paramount in ANY work with power tools.
Safety in every form will allow both of you to fully enjoy the fruits of your labor for many years to come.
Your yacht is looking BEAUTIFUL ,!!!
What a gas bag

Surely you have a mirror before you.

Glad to see you have a block plane.
Its sad to see a new boat not built to last
Leo seems like a great guy to come and help. Good job Leo.
Garrett getting his romantic side on!!!! You two are too cute! good job looking out for each other!
If you leave the deck natural wood and paint it the same as the bull works it would look fantastic!!!!!!!!!
Y’all are doing fantazmo
The rails look so nice all stained and the cabin all painted.
When it swells up again it will peel that bottom paint right off. West system!! before its to late!!
Good solid progress.👍
great job kids!
Thanks for sharing. We live in NW Indiana It's been fun watching you guys build your boat. I grew up sailing dad retired on his hand made boat. Now I'm getting ready to retire I'm thinking of sailing but not sure my wife is up for it. I drove past a sail boat about 38 ft.sitting next to a barn has not been in the water for a wile now.I think i will stop and see the owner and buy it. I have a 50 x 70 pool barn put it in there and get her ready to sail. Take it to the lake and at least sail summers. Being a carpenter I really enjoy seeing this build you guys are developing quite a skill set.Cant wait too see her sailing that will be fun good luck and fair winds. Larry
Just a couple small tips. Next time time you’re going to soup your caprails you might want to router the bottom edges as well. Fir is renowned for splitting and splintering at its edges especially if it gets dry. A square edge will splinter much more than a radiused edge will. Especially on the outside of the compound curves you’re dealing with there. Might save you some splintered fingers when you run your hand down the cap rail later on.
Second tip, when you’re cutting curved pieces like you did for the trim piece on the front of the cabin you can use a board that’s half as wide plus 1/2 an inch as what you need. Simply place the top of the board in position 1/2” above the top of your cabintop or whatever other point will be its final resting place. Draw the curved line, cut the board on that line, then take the bottom piece of the board (the piece with straight factory edge on the bottom) and move it up to place it above the formerly top piece that has its straight factory edge on top. IE mating the two remaining straight edges. Glue those edges together with tite bond 3 or epoxy and you have the same shaped board that Garret made out of the much wider board. I suspect that you wouldn’t have used this tip even if you’d known about it because you will see the glue line and the grain change that you probably wouldn’t have wanted in such a prominent board. I mentioned it nonetheless , because it can be used in many other instances. For example it would have been a really good technique to use when you were building the caprails. You could have used 2x4s instead of 2x6s in some places, plus if you’d used the technique along the entire length of the caprail it would have taken ALL of the torque and spring out of the caprails because you wouldn’t have had to pull in, or torque, them as you screwed them in place. Remember how hard it was to pull in those final bow sections, well all of those forces are still there trying to explode your caprail outwards and they could have been eliminated by using this method of making laminated unstressed curves. My comment’s not meant as a criticism in any way. We all do things the best way we know how. Now you know one more way to do things to tuck away in your bag of tricks. Cheers. Love the channel and you’re doing great work!
Now THIS is the kind of peanut gallery commenting that people actually need! Great content!
GREAT episode R&G and great to see some of your finishing jobs!
Strength to you! 🙂👨🔧👩🔧👍
To me your videos have gone to the next level since you moved to weekly updates. So entertaining and informative, well done !!!
Looking good, she's a pretty boat.nice to have some long over due help as well. Way to go leo
I had an old beagle, clyde, he had an under active thyroid. Meds turned him right around. He was an awesome dog. Take care of ol' swab. Good work you too!
Great video as usual :)
This boat is beautiful! You two are such hard workers. Thanks for sharing all this with us
I think I am falling in love with Ruth
Nice to see the trim going on, You guys have come so far! She is really looking great! If you were local I'd offer some free labor, sadly my only support is watching and liking your videos. I hope one day to see you in an exotic local, that would be cool!!!
That soup sure makes the wood grain pop and look fantastic. Thank you for the video and have a great week ahead.
When you get close to he end of a haulout it is so hard not to rush. I know the feeling. All looking good.
That trim really added the finishing touch.
Never commented on this to date..but who would hit dislike on this effort..it beats me! x
Nothing like trim work to make the project come together, and look awesome. Nice Vid.
Poor Swab. Glad you caught his condition before it got too bad. Poor baby.
Ms. Ruthie, you are an amazing woman, I commend you for showing the love for your man all the time as you work together on your fabulous project. It is snowing here in Alaska and cold. Love you guys.....
Great editing! Love it. Can't wait until splash!
Another informative video by 2 gorgeous people. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
never enough hours or at least daylight in a day. Love watching our video's, good content and presentation. And that you chronologically number them.
I'll second the numbering of the videos!
A flush cutting router bit with a bearing guide would have trimmed the cabin trim cleaner than an oscillating trim saw.
Finish work takes forever to get there but when you do it's the best. Loose ends list getting shorter, rock on!
Looking good guys! Nice to see you using some upgraded tools. I liked both the router and oscillating cutter. Patience and persistence...
This is so cool guys, great job!
hello toujours un plaisir de regardez vos vidéo 👍👍👍😉
Wow the topside is really turning out great. I love the look of your boat;
SV Happy Together ended their channel today. It was disappointing, a sad day. That's quite a love story they have going on over there.
Well look at this, a new channel Salt &Tar. That's what you call a dovetail.
Nice work, Captain.
Ruthie the perfect woman.
Just thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. Such dedication and craftsmanship. Can't wait to see some sailing
trip videos.
So good to see you wearing the best of respirators!!! so many don't... there your lungs... Good for you... Hope others follow suit!!!
You didn't really show detail but the water tank frame looks nice. All of that wood looks like it sands up nicely. Didn't see the finished product but be sue to put "some" cross supports in that frame. That tank might be unhappy full of water and it's belly hanging down. You may have already done that but I thought I would throw it out there just in case. Just keep on keeping on. One bite at a time. Love you guys.
Sure bring the Patron in to sand and scrape the bottom, and no bareto!!! Only kidding, lol! She's looking good, the finishing details are the icing on the cake! Was that you playing the blues around 16:00 min in Garret? Sweet tunes either way! Thanks for another great episode, im with you since day one, and love them all!
Fantabulous....hang in there....bravo
Nice Delos hat! Boat is looking great!
Okay using a circular saw over your head with that accuracy is Awesome!! Mad skills man mad skills!
I love you guys, you are an inspiration to me. You work so hard and put so much effort into your passion. God Bless. Rob, South Africa.
Sex Mob acid jazz solo at 2:50 through 3:04. Sex Mob is the project of Steven Bernstein who plays slide trumpet (soprano trombone). You guys tend to like hippy rock. Sex Mob has a freaky cover of Li'l Liza Jane' which the Dead used to cover.
Man glitter? OK. But the DEWALT tools are what impresses me. Good work.
Realy love your build.. greetings from sweden. (Europe) ;-)
Might have said this before, but man do I love the lines on that capping rail.
short story. I built a railing on my 2nd floor deck. Same basic Technique. Vertical 4x4 cut through deck and bolted to floor joice with a cap rail and spacced horizontal runners. Had issue with wood 4x4's wicking water even though I had a boot at the base. Don't want to see the same happen to you.
Always number one. Take care of the Dawg. Cause Dawg always loves you. :)
LOL! :-) Man Glitter. Sounds like Gibbs. (NCIS)
The cap rails look amassing. They give it such a finished look.
Good work this week. Press on :-)

always makes me smile when people in florida say its cold :)
California too.
Underneath that big mountain man exterior, is a great big softie... LOL :)
Magnificent boat guys, congratulations !
I like your socks!
Love is, making fun of your wife’s dorky socks. 💕 🤣
Looked great guys!! Glad y’all got some help. The stained wood work is standing out and making the boat look very nice 👍
I bought one of those cordless Dewalt routers last year after they came out and I like it a lot so far.
So glad you got some help with the sanding - good man Leo!
Those Cap rails are beautiful - you should be justly proud of them.
Cabin colour looks great with the red hull!
Nice to see you starting on fitout and other small jobs, but can't wait to see Rediviva with her full rigging.
Can we check back with the task list every 2 or 3 weeks to remind us of your achievements and what's up next?
Awesome work. looks great
I just wish that you had started this project earlier so that I could have volunteered to help out before I had moved to Arizona. I used to live and work close to the marina you are at and would have loved to come help out. But I retired and moved to Mesa Arizona 3 1/2 years ago. Keep up the good work and before you know it you will be out of sight of dry land and living your dream life.
hi the boat is looking grate
Doing a Beautiful Job. Keep, making that man glitter. Before you know it you’ll be sailing into port in the Bahamas..
Oh man I just love your attention to detail. The fit and finish is going to be mGNIFICENT. Love what you're doing. Cannot wait ti dee the finished article.
"Man glitter!" Love it.
Amazing progress and looking good!
Lookin great!!
Making great progress!
I take it he's your big teddy bear..lol...not the dog, him. You guys work great together. Are you going to ad portal windows on the cabin at some point? I think several down each side would look classy on it. If you travel to any of the places where they have huge boat salvage operations you could pick up the nice classic all brass one much cheaper then in the states.
I demand more videos and make them twice as long ! Really enjoy watching everything you are doing :)
Then go build a boat and make videos twice as long and more often. Demanding someone else do something when they're nice enough to share their journey in the first place is quite rude.
@@thomasarussellsr Wow you really need to get a sense of humor pal
@@rahnlawson9463 most people don't realize this, but sarcasm doesn't play well in print. Body gestures and vocal fluctuations are highly needed to pull off successful sarcasm. You just can't supply the whole package in print.
Looking good
Вы крутые.👍
I have question when you bored the hole for the sink drain what's to stop that hole from sinking the boat seams like to me it would come back up the sink an bye bye boat maybe I'm wrong can you tell me just wondering
Respect
"Hi , my name is Leo, I am a boat builder and a sailor."...... and Was Leo the Leo you were expecting?
For a second or two... yes! However...the Leo that showed up is a perfectly good Leo as far as Leo's go. Good for you Leo, for helping out. Hard to believe he is the first to show up.
I have been subscribed and have opted to be notified of all posts, and yet I'm not being notified of new videos. Just wanted someone to know...
Funny, I unsubscribed and I still get notifications.
I had a dog that WOULD NOT take pills. I tried everything. Finally ended up with twinkies it all things. One Twinkie lasted 3 days. Break in 3rds and stuff the pill in the middle.
I've never seen a battery driven caulking gun before. Wild.
Just recently started seeing them. Guys up north who have to go through dozens of tubes of adhesive a day in sub-freezing weather love them.
It's amazing!!!
8:12 Somewhere men wear Cologne, I wear composting toilet medium...
Looking good. Yea round over the bottom corners of the cap rail. I seen a guy stick a splinter.. well more like a 8" long wedge of red fir right through the palm of his hand and out the other side. He couldn't get it out and drove himself to the hospital to have it surgically removed. Anything with square corners need to be rounded or you will end up with something close to that happen.
Are you cross planked under there? That's very cool if you are. I'm currently researching for a boat project (may never happen but I'll understand it more) based on Chesapeake Bay deadrise design. Most are cross planked, but the hard part: No one ever built according to plans. Its all in the builders head.
8:55 AWE!
Have you shared your boat sauce recipe? It could just be the video, but your's seems darker/richer in color than mine.
Garrett, one question...
Why the trim before the cabin-top decking? If the decking were done first, you could run it off the end and cut it even with all four sides, resulting in a perfect fit, then edge banding/trim. Just wondering about the logic of it.
Thanks.
Mighty Awesome! Goodonyas! Go get'm 🐅's....
I think you two could get the engine all hooked up and running about now so once back in the water the boat can be moved around her own power
The medicine really helps, at least it did our dog.
Why not use a routerbit to trim to edge?
Why don't you mount your ship name shield?
Thinking about the cabin entry during heeling and rough seas, might help to screw on a S.S. 'barn door' handle to the inner side of the hatch rails. Wet hatch sliders won't give much grip when you most need it... And, any plans for a Dodger? You'll want that hatch open in hot, rainy weather...
I'm thinking/hoping there'll be loads of grab handles and rails throughout...
what was that last tune?
Hi , just wondering if you are using the strange 'sloughing ' type bottom paint made for wood boats . I assuming as it stays soft it is made so that if it goes in open gaps on the planking it will squeeze out as it swells? I think you have to launch within hours of applying. We stopped using it a long time ago when our 2nd wood boat had an epoxy covering......Cheers Warren . Ps good on you Leo For helping out!
Did it feel good to paint the cabin sides or WHAT?!?! Sweet! What type of wood did you use for the decks? I can't remember....
I love your work. I worry about the bottom plank of your bulwarks. Is there enough space between it and the deck to shed heavy seas?
Absolutely, there's about an inch gap along the whole length:)
Salt & Tar Good. Good. Good.
I'm sure I missed it but why did you paint the cabin, then remove the paint, then repaint it? What was wrong with the original paint? BTW, I'm enjoying the videos and learning alot about what goes into projects like this. All the best to you both!
