  • When you were a kid, did you ever build a fort? Maybe out of blankets and pillows or wood and a tree. Building a boat we get to use all of the above. Our fort floats and will one day cross an ocean. Not every day does this feel as epic as it sounds but keeping that dream alive and our spirit young it's fun. Every bit of paint gets our home closer to completion. Thanks for joining us!

    Hello Ruth,
    If you wish your tile counter to last you will require an 1 1/2" plywood base. Or it will crack apart slowly.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

      Flexable grout will help, to a point, but yeah a thicker top is important to the longevity of a tile countertop too.

    Nice large sink in the galley. Worth it to build your own boat just to have a big sink. Barely able to fit my elbows in the one on our cruiser.

    I think the boards that come down the wall that Garrett cut off would look so much more attractive and less of a chance that you get banged into if you would either round them over or cut them on a angle so that they taper to nothing at the bottom of the over hang. Just a suggestion.

    Ruth and Garrett you guy are doing a hell of a build on your vessel..
    Ruth is awesome on camera and im sure she does most of the editing.
    Garrett you are one hell of a Master Carpenter my man !
    I see that a few others have suggested knocking the corners off the half bulkheads .
    That would be a smart thing to do .
    I've a fare amount of boat Carpenter.
    I suggest putting a radius the size of a 8in. Dinner plate and also in the same radius a hand grab on both bulkheads...
    Please give it some thought as i know you will.

    suggestion: tile on the backsplash and mini bulkhead too, and carry the ceiling slats on to that big blue then green full bulkhead, maybe alternating bands of vertical slats with paint. can always be removed.

    • @thomasarussellsr
      @thomasarussellsr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Additional suggestion: flexible grout. Thus boat will flex under normal use. Standard grout will end up cracking and letting tile loosen much more quickly than on a stationary wall of a land built home.
      (If not available in boat building material supply stores, check RV material sources).

    We have tile on our kitchen counters. We HATE it. The grout between the tiles allows water to seep through. Please consider something like silestone, quartz, granite, corian, etc., and make sure that your sink is compatible, seal-wise, with your chosen surface.

    You know that shot at dusk in your intro (0:50) where Garrett is leaning into the boat over the rails, the exterior cabin-top sides look pink because of the ambient light, its a beautiful color. You might consider using that there or as an accent somewhere else.

  • @thomasdoerr2443

    The boat looks great. Making multiple disparate colors work with each other can be difficult. There is a little trick that works pretty well. You have the cream and the charcoal that make a nice contrast. When you add a third color, it has to work with the first two, so you add a very (and I mean very) small amount of the two original colors to the third, and they will somehow look right together. When we paint a white ceiling in room with a colored wall, we always add a (very) small amount of the wall color to the white and the colors work perfectly together.

    Those vertical square timber pieces that go up the face of the wall in which the portholes are fixed might look rather nice with a 45° chamfer on the bottom edge facing inwards. It would also make them hand and head friendly just in case you lurched into them while stooped over.

  • @michaelday7890

  • @CheersWarren
    @CheersWarren 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Of course the dark colors are a bit overpowering , but you will have decorations , portholes, equipment, switch panels , repeater compass , or whatever to break it up and the contrast will be so interesting too.
    I think I might have not put the paneling behind the countertop . I like to see the hull and frames! But they may be some gaps to fill but the ventilation for the wood is good too. Maybe just a high fiddle at the back? But what every is quickest that get you sailing first!
    Cheers Warren

    I'm intrigued you guys do not prime and/or undercoat the bare plywood before applying the top coats - I would typically put a primer on as it seals, fills grain and reduces soaking of top coat into wood...

    • @daveamies5031
      @daveamies5031 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on the paint, some of the modern paints are "self priming" and in theory don't require it, i'm no expert but my step dad is a builder and he told me it saves him time.

    • @richardrawling1874
      @richardrawling1874 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Strong work on the cabin interior! A personal preference for sure, but I would minimize gloss finishes down below. At night there will be considerable reflection from interior cabin / berth lights -- perhaps a matte or satin finish? Same colors, which look very nice, but just an overcoat with a flatter finish. Even the vanished wood in the cabin will look better with a satin finish (topsides the gloss is great). Also, the tiles will add a real accent to your galley; however, on horizontal surfaces they might be too slippery in a seaway and are not very forgiving should you drop any glass / ceramic cups, mugs, plates, and so forth. As noted, these are just personal notions -- she's your boat! Continued good luck with the build.

    In case you aren't totally set on tile yet. One issues I've had with tile in the kitchen (sticks-n-bricks home) is keeping the grout clean, especially if you like to make bread or other food on the counter. Another concern I'd have on a boat is if you have any glass (including Corell) is it is easy to break things on tile. Just a couple thoughts. I'm sure whatever you do will be beautiful.

    Painting pro tip: Cut in the edges with a brush first and then use the roller. You will have better results. When you get good with the brush - you wont need the blue tape as much. Flater finishes open the area - high sheen makes the area more intense and feel smaller. Interior designers say use finishes in 3's - bring in the hull color into the interior....

  • @bobhamilton298

    Boat is starting to look like a home. You mentioned tile. I would not go with tile on a boat. Boats flex, tile cracks. Also tile is a real pain to keep clean. Germs live by the millions on the grout. On a boat that will become mold. Keep up the good work!
