  • It would've been nice to have felt a little more organized but other than that there were no complaints about the day. We are so looking forward to the next time we do this with spars up, ports in, and engine running. We nearly have all the gear/equipment we need for Rediviva just almost none of it is installed... We still have so much of the major parts of the build yet to complete that things like electrical and plumbing are not a priority. Next BIG step will be stepping the masts! Patrons will also get a special sneak peek of that ;)
    Cheers!

    Best looking sinking boat I have ever seen. It slowed to pumping every 40 minutes. Seems slow sinking is better. I remember tall wooden ships also sank a lot .. so there's that. You have a lot of faith in that one pump. Ruth is the most understanding patient and low expectation woman I think I have ever seen. Anyone else would be in tears on a half finished sinking house boat. One day when it's finished I am sure it will be awesome. Can't wait for the next episode. I'm just messing with you. Nice job.

    Brings back so many memories. My Dad had a 36 ft. Chris Craft (mahogany). He made me read and understand "Chapman Piloting & Seamanship" before I was allowed to even launch my little 13 ft. skiff. That was 50 yrs. ago and I have met way too many boaters without that knowledge.

    Ive been following since day 1. Its been a long journey, but you guys are living your dreams. Im from a different generation and simply had no choice in that matter. i spent my life time working and paying bills that left me with nothing else other than to work. Im too sick now to be able to do anything else now other than to watch paint dry. So its so good to see a young couple with their full lives infront of them being able to live life the way it should be lived. Admittedly, I was very taken aback by the negative comments following your last video release. I really couldn't believe that some people are so entitled to believe there is some sort of issue with content makers videos not being released in real time . What planet do these moronic people live on? Not one of them actually has their own youtube channel, so in other words have zero clue just how much work goes into producing content. let alone doing it well and on a shoe string budget while living onboard while building it. So in a way it was like house cleaning: getting rid of low quality trash garbage from your community. Anyhow, enough of my rant, but it just pissed me off and I really didnt feel Ruth (especially) and Garret deserved any of that. Heres to sun on your back and productive days ahead.

    Could of watched several more minutes of this one. Congrates on the first haulout ! Rule Super Switch and mount the pump lower than the switch with a backflow preventer, maybe on a nice two level shelf that easily unbolts from the bilge and can be lifted fr service. As a backup, have the engine raw water pickup switchable from thruhull to bilge pump with hose with a strainer. Also useful for engine servicing like maybe having to run while hauled out with a bucket for the water supply or antifreeze to winterize the raw water system (heaven forbid) ! She looks Yar !

    While I agree that launch day after the annual haulout should be as "normal" as possible, after 45 years of launching I still find it impossible?
    Your loving devotion to the creation of this magnificent craft has produced a creature now of the sea.
    I now know that haulouts serve two purposes. Of course it's a time for the miriad of maintenance items that these floating sculptures require for their very existence but perhaps more importantly they serve to generate a longing to return to the sea and all the adventures that await you both.
    So my wish for you both is that launch day never becomes normal. That the return to the sea on that busy day is always filled with excitement and adventures to come.

    A trick I used for launching after a long haulout was to fill a coffee can with sawdust and lash it to a long pole with the top of the can pointing up the pole length. Put the lid on the can with a string tied through a hole in the lid. Figure out where the water is coming from and jam the pole and can under the boat and pull the lid. Suction will draw the sawdust into the openings and plug them. It won't stop the leaks completely most times but will slow it down as the sawdust swells. Use to make two or three of these rigs. Only had to use one once and it worked like charm. Nice to have them on hand if needed.

    Hello
    I have been watching off and on from the beginning. Very impressive with what they have done.
    BUTT the boat is built from doug fir much of it from home depot. That is a soft wood. Relying on swell to seal a boat is an old idea and even with the old growth dense hardwoods like teak, oak, Ect. The boats really did not last long. They built the boat very tight it swelled the first time with minimum leakage. (to Much) This is because it is a soft wood! Every time it swells it breaks up the fibers in the wood and opening up the joints weakening it and softening the wood. That's why the original bottom coat failed. The second time there was plenty of leakage because of the excessive swelling softening. The only solution is to coat the whole bottom with epoxy fiberglass like west system. The designer of there boat recommends that over and over in his plans and web sight. Nowhere does he recommend tar and paint.
    Im writing this because i really respect all the work and dedication that went into this project. Hope they do the right thing before its to late!
    Ps now all you cheer leaders can respond picking these well meant factual comments apart.

    • @justbecause3751
      @justbecause3751 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good work guys. But I agree with Tom. If you want to hand this boat down to your children it needs to be sealed and glassed with west systems epoxy and a double bias glass. Then faired with thickened epoxy. Then more epoxy sanding ect. Then your hard work will be preserved and appreciated for a hundred years or more. I love all your videos and only mean well. Please seal it. I'm a boat builder and want you to be happy in 20 years not throwing it away.

    • @tomhutchins1046
      @tomhutchins1046 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justbecause3751 i agree obviously except at the rate of damage shown by the leakage. I give it 3 - 5 years max before the structural damage will make it impossible to fix.

    One job at a time. What challenges will she offer this day, or the next? Boats are living organisms with personalities, especially this one, since you are building her. The only way to stay friends is to accept her foibles. That was what I learned with mine, anyway.

    Ruth, "You're coming too". Thanks, just sitting in the yard would have been boring. LOL
    As much as the sheathing appeared on camera to have dried out, I kinda expected much more water ingress than the first launch. I was correct. But manageable with the bigger pump. At least the main hull is getting wet, it should swell in just a few days and give time to install the float switch and pit the pump to a through-hull (If that's the plan).
    Good to see the grand lady back in the water.
    Also, great to see Swab alert and moving about, now that he is on the boat. Bet he's been thinking, "dang, my humans are taking so long to get me back on the water!".

      Nah. Just assume it'll come back needing some attention. If not, be pleasantly surprised. But don't lend to "that guy" again.

      Or it would have broken when they had 8" of water in the bilge and they would have to scramble to replace it while taking on water. Good on him for testing it before needing it.
