So glad to see someone giving Nile Rogers his due here in TH-cam. The only thing that rivals his guitar playing is his producing sensibilities. Duran Duran, Diana Ross, Carly Simon, David Bowie, Daft Punk, Pharrell Williams, Mick Jagger, Christina Aguilera...the list of producing credits is long and deep. I have been his biggest fan for decades, long admiring his synthesis of jazz, soul, and funk applied to a wide and diverse range of musical genres. Thank you for this video.

Nile's harmony really is what sets him apart. Normally, my brain (and probably most of our brains) go to blues harmony and 9th chords when thinking about funk, but Nile takes that same feel and applies it to classical harmony.
My favorite Nile part is the intro to "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross - the part is so rhythmically complete that the drums can almost act as a melody instrument, which builds a ton of suspense. And harmonically, the progression never fully resolves itself but also never feels too far out. There are lots of good options, but "I'm Coming Out" embodies the things that make Nile great.

I got to go see Chic and Duran Duran at Red Rocks, Co. years ago.I went with my wife and youngest son. My son was blown away by Niles Rodger's guitar playing. After the show, I told him about how Nile Rodgers has produced and co-written many hits. Now, like me, he is a huge Niles Rodgers fan. The guy is a living legend.

I have to admit, about 6 months ago I spent a lot of time 'reading' about Niles who was kind of a mystery to me. Why, because I frequently saw his name popping up for his playing, long career, and having made great music with tons of people. Around the same time I heard of Cory Wong. Can't say I'm a huge fan of either, but much respect to both of them. Heck, if you can play guitar you're pretty much assured of getting my respect, some more than others, but all will get it. Come to find out I had been listening to Niles for years as I've been around for quite a while, but I didn't know it was him playing that funk.

Niles Rodgers is without question IMO one great underrated players. If you look at the 70’s in general and the song writing skills that were on display in so many genres it was an amazing time.
Today’s generation of songwriters do not utilize the full range of possibilities that was on display 70’s. If you have the time to explore the different genres it’s overwhelming IMO the talent that was on display.

RESPECT! It would be a literal crime if this man isnt eternally known and reveered... Sugar Hill gang (Rapper's Delight) were sued for taking Nile's riff from "Good Times" by Chic. Everybody Dance is one of my all time favorite songs. Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards were the dynamic duo of the late 70's. There album with Le Freak and Good times also classics. Their work on Diana Ross's album Diana (I'm coming out, Upside down) has their signature Chic work on it as well. Check out Sister Sledge and the We are Family Album

Michael Jackson's Rock with You by Rod Temperton does exactly the same chromatic thing and it makes you want to dance. Nile Rodgers named his guitar ' hit maker' which he bought as a teenager and didn't know that B-Stock meant that his new Fender Strat didn't correspond to specifications. There are interviews where he talks about his guitar and its very special sound. And I really liked hearing your perspective on disco. I wish my kids would call me up and ask me about what it was like when we were all disco dancing and getting down to Chic and all eyes were on Studio 54 for the new thing.

I Just Have to Say, I Like Your Playing Style Because I've Seen People Who Tried to Play a Nile Rodger's Song and They Don't Even Come Close to The Song. So Thank You For Getting It right. great vid, thanks
    Nile's favorite is Good Times...
BTW fun story about "Everybody Dance":
So right before Nile starts to put Chic together in '77, he bumps into one of his old teachers/mentors, who asks "hey Nile, whatchya up to?"
he says "just earnin' bread on the club circuit playin' crappy pop songs like Sugar, Sugar" (The Archies, '67)
his teacher says "hey, Sugar, Sugar" is a good song"
    Nile: "naw it's cheesy doo-wop"
Teacher: "Sugar, Sugar sold a million records. How many did you sell?"
    Nile: "huh..."
Two weeks later, he writes "Everybody Dance", doo doo de doo
which is of course the same jingle as "Sugar, Sugar"
    & it worked...
