I watched this last night. I love your videos. I just started the hip series, yesterday. I am already moving better. I've been told I have bone-on-bone arthritis. I've been told..."If you don't get surgery (full hip replacement) you will end up in a wheelchair." This was told to me by a doctor. However, NO ONE I've met with EVER talks about the muscles. I find this to be a missing piece in our medical system. Everything I see and practice in your videos makes sense and helps me. Even if I had surgery, if my muscles are not working right, I will still be in pain. So, I look forward to continuing the Hip series you've put together. THANK YOU! The video above tells me I need to do a little bit of movement in-between clients.

I can’t tell you how much I needed this advice! I have hip and back chronic pain, it’s really hard to work from an open space office precisely because I can’t freely do those moves to balance out the time I have to spend sitting down 😢 When working from home and able to take frequent breaks to activate my muscles, it makes a huge difference in my pain management and sleep.

    • @Uprighthealth

If you make it a habit to take those movement breaks, you may find that many of your coworkers will appreciate the inspiration!

For the last two years I have been using a large (65cm) Pilates ball along with an adjustable standing desk and I am very happy. I still have back pain for about 60 seconds after standing up but I attribute that to sitting for long periods of time and not taking frequent enough breaks.
Overall I give the Pilates ball a B+.
Pros: They're cheap and allow for a lot of bouncy movement. They force you to use your legs constantly for balancing on top of it.
Cons: They're not very adjustable though they do come in different sizes and can be deflated if too high. Challenging, but not impossible, to play a guitar while sitting on one.

Hi Matt, I'm 63 yrs old and I've had a failed S1-L4-L5 fusion with adjacent segment disease (ASD) with 4 bulging disks above the fusion site for 20 years and I've managed to live with it by listening to my body and doing what works. Now my R hip and thigh are so painful I've had to take months off work and cancel my life. 9 months and 5k dollars later, I've seen six doctors, 2 chiropractors (30 sessions), had 2 injections, 8 x-rays, and an MRI - and now I'm told I need a spine injection. And guess what, Matt? I'm still out of my mind in pain and have no answers. Here is what I've been told so far: FAI, torn labral, torn gluteus, bursitis, arthritis, L-4-L3 nerve impingement. I don't have any more money to purchase your programs, so I'm trying your TH-cam suggestions. Question: is it possible that if the ASD is impinging my L-4-L-3 nerve, focusing on muscles will release that impingement? I would LOVE to know what you think about pinched nerves in the spine. I'll be using your free resources until I can afford a program.

The voice of reason and experience. You’re so right !
I’ve done many exercises to get better, yes I improved over months but at what cost ?
Those exercises were mostly quite difficult, at least uncomfortable, ineffective or counterproductive, not adapted to me and therefore unlikely to motivate me long term in the midst of whatever else I’m doing.
Yours are sustainable long term, can be done anywhere.
After a half an hour of your very simple exercises I already feel a stronger effect that I didn’t get with the more difficult ones. I expect to be sore tomorrow. Very grateful !

Yoga Balls: Didn't work out for me. 1) I am short and don't always have control over the height of the desk or keyboard tray and, while there are different sizes of yoga balls, they are not adjustable. 2) An issue bigger than hips for me is RSI right shoulder and arm issues. I need to prioritize the position of my typing and mouse position, height, etc. (yes I will sometimes switch mouse hands). If my shoulders, elbow, hand position is not right I get immediate feedback. So, no yoga ball for me.

    • @juliancochran
      @juliancochran 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

RSI of hands and upper arms can also be a pinched nerve in the back. Try forcefully lowering your shoulders and also stretching your elbows back behind as when waking up. This may clear the RSI of hands instantly, with the nerve signal unblocked in this way.

It saddens me to further learn how the medical system is just about profit but it now makes sense... I spent $2,900 on a custom ergonomic chair which included a session to measure all of my ligament dimensions. They were really kind, and the service was good. But when taking it home I found I am forced to sit in a really weird position that forces me to sit partly on my back, and after even 5 minutes I already have lower back inflammation and it is unbearable. You keep putting down a surgical option, but when the issue is a degenerative severe central spinal stenosis and anterior listhesis, this is not a muscular problem and the condition will never be fixed. I can see the benefit of getting stronger, and I do understand the "hope" that by getting stronger one won't feel the symptoms of the diagnosis, but surgery IS, in fact, the only permanent remedy of the underlying problem

7:50 I have been using a large fitball to sit on when working at my computer for probably 10 years.
It’s great for Balance and your core I don’t sit on it like a regular chair. I prefer to roll slightly forward so that my feet and knees are almost behind me (kinda like a kneeling chair), taking the pressure off my butt and hips.
I realised that there is no back support like a regular office chair, but I find that it’s impossible to slouch when sitting on a ball.
So when your body gets tired, you actually know when to pack up, and either go for a walk, or head off to bed.

The other thing I use during the day is a mini tramp standing a high desk. I don’t use it to jump up and down. I use it to improve my balance and I stand on it whenever I need to read long emails, make video calls, or watch TH-cam.
At first, I could only do it for a few minutes before I got tired. Now I can do 4 to 6 hours no problem

Listening further into this video… I realise that I also do not have a dining table or any chairs in my house… I eat most of my meals standing up at a high counter… And after moving house, and not getting around to furnishing the living room, I also don’t have a couch or watch television. I’m not saying I’m the healthiest person, but my flexibility, and mobility, for someone who does not do any regular strenuous exercise is pretty good and pain-free. I also don’t drive a car, don’t commute by public transit and walk everywhere.
WOW! Until I wrote this, I didn’t realise how awesome my way of life has been for my body.

As a gamer and writer, I would spend a lot of time at my desk, when I damaged my L4, L5 and S1 back in 2020, I could barely sit down on my computer chair or even on the couch without being in absolute agony. My husband had a Secretlabs gaming chair which could adjust to being in Zero gravity mode, so he swapped chairs with me and I was able to be at my desk a lot longer. Fast foward to this year when I came across your videos Matt and between them and the computer chair, I can spend hours on it with no pain and have done so for 6 months now (that's how long it's been since discovering your videos).. I also managed to talk a friend out of getting the CT guided injection for her back pain as I got that 2 years ago and made me worse off and instead, got her to check out your videos and the last 2 months have been the best for her as she's had a massive reduction in pain

Your take on fibromyalgia is way oversimplified and unhelpful, not to mention lacking in information, but I really appreciate the exercises you recommend and demonstrate.

I'm being crushed by my muscles..11 years and 2 back surgeries later I'm so much worse than I was before. It was my SI joints all along.. now I'm fused from L3/4- L5S1 and it's crushing my pelvis that much more 🥺

I got a kneeling chair a few years ago and I love it! I don't get any tightness in the front of my hips like with a regular chair, and I feel like my posture is better when using the kneeling chair.

Thank you for your videos! Your advice is no nonsense, upfront, honest and helpful. Your knowledge in how the body works and how to alleviate pain and discomfort is so helpful and so easily explained. I have hip issues and your videos have helped me alleviate pain, move around more and just possibly avoid a hip replacement! You offer so much more than orthopedic doctors do!!!Thank you so much! I look forward to your next video

I have learnt that you are very entertaining.... and I like it! I've ditched my ROCK HARD Saddle chair.... and gone back to a softer one and I'm 'wriggling' around constantly. Already feels better. (I have Dr.Googled and think I have GTPS??). I'll be back!

Hi, I believe my HIP Problems began 5 years ago when I started working from Home. I am an IT professional and spend at least 40 hrs per week sitting in fron of the Monitor. I noticed working from Home I spent more time SITTING without getting up for Meetings, Coffee, Talk to my peers, etc.. about two years into working fro home, I noticed I started getting pain in my hips getting up from the chair. I changed chairs several times but the pain just got worst. Five years into working from home, I can no longer bend over to put socks on or tie my shoe laces or pick up anything I drop. The hips Pain is 24-7. I Finally went to doctor and I was diagnosed with Osteoarthitis with severe narrowing of the superior aspect of the Right and left hip joints. Working from Home was not the best for me since I spent more time than normal sitting. My Doctor immediately told me I needed Hip Replacement.
