I like this series. I just wish you'd do some for nomads EAST of the Rockies. We have great places to camp here too. You just gotta look for them.
That dam was one of the most dangerous in the state, old and in need of repair. It’s dangerous for kayak fishing because of the jet skis, water skiers and lunatic boaters, full of liquor and stupidity. Don’t come anytime near a major holiday. Rudeness and general mayhem prevail during those times. If you want to kayak, go to Heron Lake. It’s a “no wake” lake and boaters are reined in significantly. Go during the middle of the week, early in the morning. Be on the water at sunrise. Fishing is far grander and the crowds are minimal. I once discovered that the week or two before Memorial Day weekend , was an outstanding time to be fishing the East bank of Elephant Butte Reservoir. Wednesday was the quietest water traffic and the best fishing!

On my travels I have found that New Mexico has some of the best state park campgrounds. And so inexpensive compared to campgrounds where you are crammed in like a sardine. Elephant Butte is just a beautiful state park to stay at
Especially middle of the week before Memorial Day weekend. After that, kayaks and canoes have to really watch out for boaters.
This state is a gem!

One thing I would like to hear about is how dog friendly the parks are. I went to Bottomless Lakes and it was tough to find a place to walk with my dog because there were so many stickers. Thanks Brian!
I went to Bottomless Lake in the spring before swimming season had started, and found it very peaceful and dog friendly. My dog and I hiked the trails and played water fetch in the beautiful lake. On a cold day we even tossed the ball around in their huge picnic pavilion. 🙂 When it got warmer it got busier , but never crazy loud and rude like some places I’ve stayed.
I love this series… I am thinking of getting an annual pass there next year when I get on the road.

I have watched a few of these videos so I decided to buy a road map which I'll need anyway and make notes on the maps of all the spots mentioned in the videos. I was writing them down but I think keeping them in a map will work best and I'll have them when I am able to become a nomad. Thanks!

i appreciated staying in New Mexico parks for a few months. They did start changing the reservation system from first come first served to a reserve america system that charges a fee to book and sometimes a fee to change or cancel your reservation. Book early for many of the camps because they do fill up City of Rocks was one that was always booked but i did eventually stay there without hookups and it was worth the visit.

@@cbx500cbx if the reservation system had no availability I did not pursue travel to the park.
Then Covid hit and all the parks were shut down for a time. Full time rv’ers had to plan staying in place with less places available to stay in. I’m sure it was a phenomenon across the world.

Thank you for the overview, I do want to go check out and explore this area as well as Lake Heron per your last video. Many of the reservoirs here in Utah are also critically low, we'll see what happens in the future.
Thank you for all that you do. Are there places that have similar rates as the NM SP that are more green? Like say in Colorado? I have to say I would be very depressed with that view. The thing that gives me pause about "van life" and what Bob always shows is that it's always desert areas that's on this channel. I guess it's some of the cheaper places to stay but honestly I'd rather stealth camp in my city than be in a desert. Probably what I will do. Perhaps the more lush and green an area is, the more "green" you have to spend to stay there? lol
Kansas has annual camping passes for $202.50 (if purchased prior to April 1 or after September 30) or $252.50 if purchased April-September). Like NM, this does not include electric.
I was not surprised to find out that Scuba diving was done there. Especially if you can get down to the level of the town that is underwater (may be a very deep dive).

Actually, I think perhaps I'd prefer to camp where there was a lot more shade, or in this case, Any shade! Having no solar or generator, means no a/c, so it's vital to have shade for my tiny camper. But other than that it is a great review, love your vids. Oh, Is this park dog friendly? Would love to see a vid on the area of Cibola Ntl Forest area just north and east of Santa Fe. Would love to do some camping up there, looks beautiful. Will you do some vids on the National Forest areas as well?
At the primitive sites at El Vado there's a lot of shade.
I've never been there but it sounds like there are better places to go. Thanks for the video and info.

Loving this addition to CheapRV.. One thing I find about state parks websites is they are poorly laid out and not informative enough for me. I'd love to see a continual state park review series. One thing people rarely report on is if there are a lot of biting bugs or at certain times of the day.
As far as if I would visit this state park, yes. I love the New Mexico deal, except I don't like the reservation fee. I think that cost should be built into the system and not use all these private corporations into the state parks. You should be able to call or go online and immediately reserve your spot with a credit card or perhaps a 2 hour hold if you don't have a credit card.

Did you happen to keep track of your mileage and gas costs for the year for the park pass? I'm not a nomad yet but I'm working on being one in a couple of years. I can't decide where I want to stay first but this park pass is extremely appealing if I'm not spending a fortune in gas lol
