- Teddy Roosevelt was without a doubt the most conservation minded president that we ever had. One of the legacies that he left behind was the designation of the first national monument; Devils Tower. We're traveling to the geologic wonder to explore the science and history behind the tower that is rich with history and intrigue.

Devils Tower is a sacred, beautiful place. It is a spiritual walk that everyone should experience.

I was there in the early 70s. Pictures or video really doesn't do it justice. You have to see it in person. Thanks for the memories.

Like you I’ve always thought highly of TR since he was a conservationist What’s more, despite having medical issues, he faced life head on and wasn’t afraid to stand his ground. If you ever get the chance, visit the Panama Canal as this is a true testament to the man with bold, bold visions.
TR was the man, for sure.
I have a real nterest in history because of my father and mother. When they took us kids (four of us) on vacation every year the told us we are not going somewhere to have fun. We are going to somewhere to learn something. We will have fun learning something, but fun is not the primary goal.. The goal is learning and seeing and seeing something new. Therefore I have been in 37 states. I have been to Yellowstone. Mese Verde, the Painted Desert, etc. You bring back a lot of memories. Thanks.

I've often wondered the same thing. Other countries have old buildings and castles. But the national treasures in the natural wonders are what set the U.S. apart.
Hooray TR. I live 15 minutes from Sagamore Hill. My dad took us kids and I knew it so well I told them what they moved. It was before guided tours. Dad met Archie and Ethel.

Definitely a cool place to see.
Three things. 1) The nice view was used in “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” as was the tower itself. 2) Did you see the Prairie Dog field at the base, along the highway? 3) ADIS you climb to the top of the Boulder Field?. It’s fantastic.
1.) Big fail on my part for not giving that movie a mention.

Excellent....When I was there 30 plus years ago, you could see rope ladders that the Native Indian's used to get to the top....It was a burial ground for them...I'm surprised to see so many climbers on the Tower....Thanks....

Went there 6 years ago from Australia. A friend said it was on our way to Montana and we Went. It is amazing. I wish I still rock climbed.
While in wyoming be sure to visit Yellowstone National Park, the first of the national parks that Teddy Roosevelt helped establish in the national park system

Amazing place, in person it is awe inspiring. I did not realize it was our first national monument. Teddy Roosevelt was just an all around cool guy. Need more politicians like him today in our country.
Went there during a choir trip while in high school during the 1990-91 year I didn't load it in the camera properly (was the roll of film) and I had NO pictures from that trip turn out! :( Was bummed about that!! People were climbing it when we were there as well!! And we went a little ways into the Rocky Mountain National Park from the Estes Park area.
Estes Park is a great place. Got a few videos on this channel from that area.
@@TheHistoryUnderground That has been the only time I've been there, but would LOVE to go back. For the times I've visited family in Colorado (Denver area), that was the only time I've been to Estes Park (and entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, but the road was closed in the winter and I can't remember if it was before or after the new year when we went). Had gone to Vail where the family had a condo there and with not being use to the altitude, it wasn't a great ride on the way back to their place in Englewood (didn't get sick just real nauseous)! I'll certainly look it up. And of course got the creeps just looking at the Stanley Hotel, but would have loved to have gotten closer to it!! LOL I know you've been to Jefferson Barracks in St Louis, I have to check again, but did you ever make it to Cahokia Mounds or the area where Lewis and Clark started at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers? And Old St Charles area is along the Missouri was where the first capitol of MO. There's museums at both Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville, IL and Lewis and Clark State Historic Site in Hartford, IL.
Awesome! That’s also where they filmed a major scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. TR was the man. I proposed to my wife right in front of his birthplace/home in Manhattan because she worked next door lol. I bored her w my previous visit to the home. You have to see what they have in there, incredible stuff. The house was rebuilt but it’s in the exact location.

Had a chance to walk around Devils Tower last summer, I was surprised by the size of it. Doing a deep dive on your videos today & really enjoying them!

TR, no matter what his political party, will always be one of our very best POTUS's, in my opinion. I love your video. Devil's Tower always reminded me of a humongous tree stump when I saw b/w photos of it in my childhood. But boy, I'm impressed as you are with this beautiful place. I would consider TR one of my favorite Presidents! I should take time to learn more about him. Great video! Would love to get the chance to see this sometime in person! Thank you for showing more about it and mentioning all the tribes that made the area home and still do.
You would enjoy the Roosevelt trilogy that was written by Edmund Morris. Probably the best treatment of TR ever written.

You're very close on the origin story. What I've heard, from the "Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery" documentary, was that it was seven sisters and one brother playing. While playing, the brother turned into a bear and chased the sisters. The sisters stood on the stump of a tree that then grew towards the heavens. The bear clawed at the tree stump creating the markings on Devil's Tower and the sisters remained in the heavens as the constellation Pleiades (aka Seven Sisters).
Anyone who knows better, feel free to correct me.
Yup, that's the way I heard it too. I hadnt heard of the bear being their brother though. I wonder what that's all about? Beautiful legend tho.
From what I understand, there are several different origin stories from different tribes. They had a few listed there at Devils Tower, but I only picked one of them.
@@TheHistoryUnderground There used to be a marker around there that told this same story about the Indian children. I read it in 1990. This place is considered sacred by the tribes around there. I don’t think anyone should be climbing it . Imagine if people started climbing the walls of the Vatican.

Devils Tower is not only beautiful but fascinating. Haven't been there for quite a few years and will definitely be going . This was another wonderful video. The West excites me !! I just bet History Underground would LOVE Cody Wyoming 👍👍👍😁
Dang, I really wish that I could've made it out to Cody. I'm thinking that next year, I might try and do a big trip that goes through North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Cody would definitely be apart of that one.
That Buffalo Bill museum is amazing . You can spend a couple days exploring this incredible museum. You would love it !!
I was here in the late 60's as a girl on our family vacation. I remember the different Indian legends of how it was created.
That truly is beautiful. The first nations peoples consider it sacred, yet we let people climb it like it was an amusement park attraction. Sad.
Yeah, I'm not exactly sure where I land on that. I've considered all sides. I sure as heck won't be climbing it myself though.

A site that goes along with Devils Tower is Bear Butte right outside of Sturgis, SD if you ever get the chance to visit. This is another sacred mountain to the local tribes in the area and you can see little tobacco cloths tied to the trees as gifts to their spirits. In one version of the creation of Devils Tower legend the bear gets almost to the top of the tower to get the people and looses his footing and falls back to earth and the indian folk were saved. The place where he allegedly impacts the earth is on Bear Butte. Bear Butte is one of the South Dakota state parks so there is a slight fee to enter. There is a small museum to discover and you can climb to the observation tower at the top of the butte. The total path to the top is 2.5 miles and is a little narrow and steep in parts including a few small switchbacks over a shale field right before the observation tower.

One of this Canadian's favorite places to visit. Have been several times and there is a very spiritual feeling there and the walk around the base is pretty easy. The beautiful campground just outside the tower used to show the movie nightly. Quite the experience to watch the movie, outside, in a group, with the tower visible in the background. Not sure they are still doing that but having grown up loving the movie, it was quite the experience. Nicely done :)

Those pieces of fabric are called tobacco ties. In Lakota culture they are offerings to the Great Spirit. Those are basically people’s prayers.

Sounds like you where on the same trip that I did last year Deadwood to Devils Tower Mount Rushmore and Little Bighorn I was at the Devils Tower 1996 happened to be there that day 100th anniversary in September

He accomplished more for conservation than any other president in history.
Quite the guy. I wouldn't mind having a return to his attitude towards conservation.
When my MI Army National Guard Company deployed to Iraq in 2003-04, I was asked by many active-duty Army, why are you guys here? Shouldn't you be back in the states guarding the home front? My answer was the Guard has been doing overseas missions now for over 100 years. Remember Teddy Roosevelt and the Rough Riders? They would answer, "Yes." Teddy and the Rough Riders were part of the New York State Militia. Later they became NY Army National Guard. This answer always seemed to surprise the asking troop. The Air and Army National Guard are now just another ready military force ready to answer the Nation's call to battle.
So JD, did you know that about President Roosevelt?
What?! No mention or footage of the old ladder to the top or of George Hopkins parachuting on to the top of it? Certainly there is a lot of history around this place.

The story I heard was it was a little girl trying to get away from the bear but man I love South Dakota devils tower and deadwood Boot Hill cemetery

I've seen basalt rock formations in eastern Washington look like the layers of Devil's Tower. None of it is as pretty as Devil's Tower. I've never been to D.T. but thanks for the tour. I've only seen it in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"...LOL!

I cant help but wonder, since TR, was one of my favorite presidents, had not his first wife and mother died when they did, would he have gone out west and seeking solace as he did and it was that time he realized the natural treasures that would be destroyed if conservation didnt come about through his efforts..truly a lion, packed a lotve life in 60 years

Any idea of the geologic age of the Tower? I hope you get to Yosemite eventually and at a time to spot some climbing daredevils scaling the face of half dome. A bud and I climbed about 25 feet here and while difficult the more experienced climbers say that erosion over thousands of years and more have produced handholds to assist.Oh yeh on the backside of Half Dome are the "cables" and I challenge you climb to the top, they are an assist but doable. take plenty of water
