The only good thing is that you realize it and I hope you can take small trips. My neighbor talked for years of going to Sturgis. He made the trip and died suddenly a few weeks later. I believe he was one of the first with the virus from our wonderful friends in Asia.

Visited Devil's Tower in 2002 with my 12 year old son. When we got up close, we could see and hear the people who were scaling it.

My brother and I went there back in 2015 we did the complete walk around of the Devil's Tower it was fun they have an asphalt walking path all around the thing thanks for the video
Cool Russ! I remember seeing Devils Tower in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Cool movie and monument.
I was there a month ago. The trail is a complete loop all the way around the base of the tower. Took me 1.30 hours!! I was so impressed I made it. The whole trail is beautiful. They have benches all the way around so you can sit. It's a beautiful drive up. Very glad I was able to see it. Totally worth going to see.

I was up there in 1977 just 3 weeks before the movie crews arrived and it was nothing like it is today. No ranger station and nobody to pay. Just the road leading to the parking lot which at that time was gravel. No campgrounds just a gravel lot. I was 13 and hiked the old trail there that you showed. No sidewalk like you show, no plaques nothing. Just raw nature in 77. I was 13 years old and my mom and dad stayed in the pickup truck camper while I hiked the old trail. It went the whole way around the tower a little over a mile walk if I remember correctly. Was very fortunate that day to see Native Americans praying at the base and on the other side 2 guys climbing it. That was a great day and parents could cut a 13 year old boy loose to hike the monument without worrying about never seeing the kid again. In my opinion these national monuments are getting too fancy and commercialized. Beautiful video!

Thank you for making the trip to Devils Tower. I have always wanted to see the tower especially since I saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I have often wondered where the filming was done. I could see the trees from the drive by. I think that may have been the filming side. I saw a path along the rock face where you walked to the base of the tower. That path was to take the actor Drefuss to the opposite side where he would encounter the alien spaceship. In 1978, Close Encounters of the Third Kind was a big hit and made Devils Tower quite an icon. Those prairie dogs were gathering to be on RVer TV. Have fun in Sturgis.
I'll be making this trip from the UK in two weeks time. Its a bucket list trip as i have always wanted to see the tower first hand since I first saw Close Encounters. I'll be flying into Denver and driving up. Will also be taking in Casper, Deadwood, Mt Rushmore and Laramie before returning to Denver.
Devils Tower is the cooled lava of an ancient volcano. The dirt has eroded away and the cinder remains as the extremely cool National Monument! Great video thanks!

It is humbling to imagine how long it took that volcano to cool down and erode. In a few million years, there will be no trace of this tower. Yet we worry so much about how we are destroying the earth. How dare we think we have that much power. The earth don't care if we eradicate ourselves now, or nature will do it for us. For we are a pimple on the earth's a$$.
Nope. Ancient tree stump.
It's a tree trunk. True. They are all the through the area, but most of them have dirt leading up to the top like miniature volcanoes. I'm not a geologist but when you look at the area behind our programed view, any smart person would interpret the same notion if you look at them as what the area as 1. It was a very old forest when oxygen was much more concentrated in our atmosphere. Drive to Belle Forche SD, the entire are looks like small volcanoes. Bear Butte by Sturgis looks like a tree that split at the bottom into 3 branches and broke down into what remains now. Maybe when all the continents had supposedly existed as 1.
Anyone visiting the Black Hills should take the hour drive to this it's totally worth it

We enjoyed revisiting our trip there a year ago this week via your fine video. It was more of a hike to walk all the way around it than we expected.
I was there for the 69th sturgis rally , 2009…. It is a must see ride.
That was a very cool look at Devil's Tower. On my very first trip out west in the late 1970's I saw Devil's Tower from a distance along I-90. I've always wanted to return and get a closeup view and walk. I camped at the nearby Keyhole Reservoir & got an amazing western sunset as a bonus.
Great video as usual. One quality I like of your videos is that you stop and focus on the signs seen on the walk etc so a viewer can pause and read the context for the complete content rather than you read it or summarize and move on. The content of your videos never disappoints. Thanks.
Thank you for visiting Devils Tower! This is a welcome relief from the desert and from Sturgis (again).
One thing I can be proud of as an American is our national park system and the monuments, reserves, and things that people can come see and enjoy for the public. There's so many places and so much land that is protected that can't be mined, cut down, or stripped down the land. It's all protected so that the public can see all the glory.
So glad you went to the devil's tower! I like the legend about the seven girls becoming a constellation!
Close encounters of the third kind with Richard Dreyfuss building that tower always staid with me, one of my childhood movies I never forgot!
Thanks Russ for bringing back great memories of a trip I took out west from my home in Ohio. In 1988 I took my wife, daughter and mother out west on a trip that lasted a month and covered 6700 miles. My family was younger and mom was a widow who had never been out west so it was a great trip for all of us. I got great pictures of the Tower using a telephoto zoom lens from roadside turnouts and also of the prairie dogs. I am now 69 years old and due to health issues cannot make the trip today. Thank you for helping me and I am sure many others relive some better times in our lives. Be safe and keep the great travel videos coming!

If you are heading home Aug. 12th-14th take Tensleep canyon to Tensleep WY there's the Nowoodstock Music festival in the park. We'd love to see you there, and meet again (last time was in Qsite outside the game store). I was the Wyomingite that held up the rope for you to drive under while you took "your" parking spot. By the way THANKS again for graciously spending the time to shoot the breeze with me. You are a good man Russ!

Alright, Russ! I was hoping you'd pay a visit to Devil's Tower. Seeing it appear over the horizon as you drive out there is pretty amazing, isn't it? I've camped there several times, both in the park campground (where we survived a huge thunder and lightning storm overnight) and the KOA just outside the entrance--they show Close Encounters every night on a big screen! It's one of my favorite places in the National Park system...there's something about the vibe there that I haven't felt anywhere else. I have a poster of the giant bear climbing the tower (at 9:29) hanging in my living room.
I was there a couple years ago. To me it looks just like a big tree stump, and I wonder how the tree would have looked before!
The vertical lines in the tower are from 'columnar jointing'. The rock was molten, perhaps in the middle of a big volcano that has since eroded away, and it cooled very slowly, over millions of years. This made it shrink, and shrinking made it pull apart into columns--like the pattern of cracks you see on dried mud. Another beautiful example of this is Devil's Postpile in California (which hopefully you'll visit when the price of diesel fuel comes down.)

I agree. It's the stump of an ancient giant tree. I think there's something in the bible about them.

Your tour showed a lot of story boards near the tower that explained the Native American lore, but I didn't see any story boards that explained the geological origins of the tower. It is a magna plug that was formed deep in the earth, possibly below a volcano above it, that was exposed by millions of years of erosion of the soil around it. The visitor center was built in the 1930s, and the internet says it was remodeled in 2021. I hope they have included in the remodel some explanation of the towers geological origins.

It's interesting that you mentioned both "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", Russ. My understanding of it is that the little boy in "Close Encounters" is also the lead government agent in "E.T."--his experience in the former picture making for a life-long obsession with re-establishing contact with the aliens. I know the production years (1977 and 1982, respectively) don't make for a realistic timeline, but that is supposedly the way things were conceived by Steven Spielberg/the writers. Thus "E.T." is "Close Encounters" sequel.
@@scottd2063 Never said Henry Thomas was in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", you need to work on your reading comprehension. Good grief. And according to movie insiders, the aliens of "Close Encounters" were predecessors of ET.
We were there in Jun 2021. We did stay at the KOA. They have great ice cream, wagon rides and show the movie Close Encounters, with the mountain in the background behind the screen. .

I went there when I was 12 in 1965. There was a dirt trail around it and only a few people there. I remember the prairie dogs.

Back in the mid 90s my husband and I traveled through South Dakota. We stopped at Wall, SD and visited the 1880s town. Both along I -90. You should check out both places. .and look for the dinosaurs along I-90. Made of metal. Awesome sight!!

Yay Russ. You made it there. You're the Man ! Once again. A high quality travel video by the master of high quality travel videos. This spectacular landmark is a huge volcanic plug. The columns are shrinkage columns as the plug cooled down over a very long time. And also, over a very long time, the surrounding ash cone weathered away. The columns are roughly six sided. A common geological marvel. Get ready for the nincompoopery comments suggesting it's a giant tree stump.

I used to live 50 miles away in Gillette when I worked on the railroad. Three or four trips a year to the Tower. Nice hike around the base. Nice to see it again.

Great side trip
Outstanding adventure Russ! People don't know that Devil's Tower is actually a petrified tree stump from back in the days before Noah. God sent angels to cut the trees down before the great flood so nothing could escape the waters. These are found all over the world, but very few are left. Seeing the size of the trees you can understand the oxygen levels would have been terrific. How many people go there and never realize what they are seeing right before their eyes! Thanks for the video.
It is part of a giant human like creature's foot. Not a giant tree stump. See Mudfossil University on youtube discussing DNA analysis of it.

Russ I went to Devils tower in 2017 , I stayed at the KOA and watched Close in counters of the third kind movie . Which was shown as part of the camping fee. I walked all the way around Devils tower. I may be back there next year.
