How badly do you think the U.S. sanctions have hurt the economy? Also, does Venezuela have private property protections? How much is nationalized property? They seem to have bet everything on the oil and outside interests have prevented them from developing that oil. Stagnant economy. It is a shame. I really appreciate watching your videos. I learn a lot. Be safe and happy trails.

Hi Nick, a Venezuelan living in Sydney here... Really enjoyed this series, especially the impact your exposure gave to the charity feeding the children in Petare, I hope there could be a follow-up to that story. Congrats for finding Lenny because I can assure you it's very hard finding someone with the city know-how, approachability to all kinds of people and good English skills, without him your experience could have been radically different. Insane that you've just showed me someone's life from the other side of the world. The house they live in, the music they listen to, their job, what they drink and how they chill out. So many different lives all making do in this world. We tend to think as individuals. That the world revolves around us. But watching your videos, Nick, reminds me that there is so much out there, so many people. With their own worries and issues, friends and family, laughs and jokes. Makes me feel blessed. We are all one. Not 'British' or 'Venezuelan' etc... but Human. Thank you.

@@arqueiafe7120 I think you've misinterpreted my original comment. Probably my own fault as anyone else's. I myself am British. Hence why I said 'British' not 'New Zealand' - I was commenting on my own experience of watching Nick's videos. His videos reminded me that I am not just a "British" individual - but a Human individual. The comments on this post repeating Nick's nationality (and now somehow dragging the entire population of the U.S?) is kind of backing my point up. Stop focusing on flags - a symbol on a bit of fabric that binds us to a nationality - and focus on what Nick's video here is showing us: we are all the same.

23 de enero was built during the 50s, and was originally named 2 de diciembre (December 2nd). The name was changed after Marcos Perez Jimenez (a dictator) was overthrown on, guess what, January 23rd 1958.
My dad lived there during the MPJ regime, it was his childhood. Fun Fact: 23 de enero is right next to Catia, and a couple of weeks ago my dad almost crashed against some FAES (Special Forces of the national police) guys and we spent like three hours trying to make our case in the Catia outpost. They pulled their guns at us after the Almost Crash. I lost my class that morning. lol
The reason 23 de enero and adjacent areas were so pro-Chavez, i think, can be traced to El Caracazo. During the seventies we had an oil boom. Then, when the boom started fading, governments couldn't keep up, and started falling into debt. There were a lot of bad economic measures, tons of corruption, and then, in '88, then-president Carlos Andrés Perez (CAP for short) was elected, and he brought a TON of economic measures like drastically raising gas/petrol prices and public transport fares. By early '89, specifically late february to march, there were violent protests and looting was commonplace. 23 de enero was a focal point for these. El Caracazo, I think, can be directly linked to Chavez rising to power a decade later: political inestability and CAP's reelection caused Chavez' coup d'etat in 1992, giving him popularity amongst venezuelans, and after being pardoned by Caldera, he won the 1998 elections.
During his government Chavez was a very populist president. It is true that his government helped lower classes, and anyone who tries to deny that is either lying or hasn't stepped into Venezuela. He also had the extremely good oil prices during the 00s, which helped with his bonanza. But his government was plagued with corruption and external influencing, and he didn't really invest in infraestructure as much as he SHOULD HAVE (for example: he announced a railroad throughout the country, I remember being six or seven years old and seeing the big concrete pillars where the railways would go, and it's been more than a decade and they didn't progress beyond that) and by the time he died and Maduro took over the good luck was over and we plunged deep into crisis, worse than anything we've ever experienced. Governments have fallen for less than this.
I really like these videos. A few years ago a mexican youtuber (Luisito Comunica) visited Venezuela, and it's cool to see outside opinions on what's going on here. I like that you went to less safe areas, too, even when it scares me shitless lmao. Thank you for making these!

Hey, "oopsie". Don't try to deny the facts. Chavez confiscated companies right and left and left the agriculture and the small industry in shambles. Chavez was as corrupt as his buddies and his family got richer than anyone. He also used the oil money to buy influences in Latin America. He was an evil man and an assassin to boot. Prosperity for the lower classes does not mean giving them handouts. It means to create JOBS so that they can be independent from the government assistance. The problem is that the Venezuelan people are now used to the "bozal de arepa" and they don't want to work and help themselves any more. I haven't lived in Venezuela for many years (THANK GOD) but I still have relatives and friends who keep me informed of the situation. Does that make me a liar? Why don't you wake up and smell what you are shoveling?
Aw, don't tell me. "It's all Trump's fault". Right?

    • @blondiedies
      @blondiedies 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@ElCid48 At no point in my comment i defended Chavez or denied the literal decades of corruption he and his government (AND OTHER LATIN AMERICAN GOVERNMENTS) spent having fun at our expenses. I said he helped lower classes, but never said the way it was done was *efficient:* there should have been long-lasting measures instead of what we got. There was gross mismanagement of resources, and yes, handouts are "abundant" (as abundant as they can be in our circumstances). It's true that they took away companies and left them to rot, resulting in our dependence on imports instead of building up our internal economy, and that's partly to blame for the current state of our country. It's true that people now *depend* on government bonuses, it's true that they *abuse* the system that gives them what was supposed to be an aid to live off of it. For example: teen mothers that keep having children for that government bonus and then leave their kids on the streets begging for money.
But it's also true that, at one point, we had the lowest levels of illiteracy in latin America. There's a reason lower-income people *liked* Chavez. At least at the start, what he promised sounded better than what previous governments had offered, and it's silly trying to ignore the failings of those before Chavez and to consider his and Maduro's governments as isolated from history.
Nothing is black or white. You are lucky enough to be outside the country. You will never know how it truly is here right now, because you simply cannot experience it. And there's nothing wrong with that. What's wrong is you coming off aggresive and, frankly, like a condescending asshole, because of a situation that has hurt us both. That has hurt us all. And I don't blame you for being upset. I'm still here. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to live abroad, far from home.
I don't know how old you are. I've lived in chavismo my whole life, and I hate it and what it has done to my home wholeheartedly. I don't know how it was to live before chavismo. Maybe you do. I don't know. I'd like to know your point of view more throughoutly, if you're willing. Just please don't be a dick.
(Also, at no point did I mention Trump, but okay. The US sanctions have really done nothing to the Venezuelan people. They're targeted towards Venezuelan government officials and the government itself, and they were implemented way after we'd already plunged into crisis. I actually remember, when Obama was still president, there were some sanctions imposed then. Like I said: they didn't really mean anything to the average Venezuelan. So no. Not Trump's fault.)

Weird stuff. Gas is free, metro is free (there is a working metro!), guy in a random apartment with a working elevator relaxing to music on a nice sound system, girl in the back casually using a tablet, even downtown Caracas looks nicer than my city... Random people in the video seem well fed and happy. The average salary is $6 a month (!) but somehow the economy seems active, you still see people out in the streets like they have something to do and there are coolers full of coke in the shops... Really weird stuff. I appreciate you showing us these images because you can’t really escape the bias in mainstream news outlets... Lenny seems a bit biased also (he obviously hates the regime) and says the metro is free because they can’t afford to pay the staff, but it somehow seems decently mantained. I can’t understand the fact that the guy from the hotdog stand is still open for business when a hotdog costs like a third of a monthly average salary, I feel as if there is a piece of information missing... I know it is a dire situation judging from the thousands of Venezuelans that have fled to my country, but it all just seems so puzzling to me.

There is not a piece missing there is most of the picture, this is just a bite size sample. A good one but small nevertheless.

Thank you indigo Traveller for showing my country to the world although I am not from Caracas but Maracaibo which is the second biggest city in Venezuela I wouldn't recommend you to go there though the situation there is 10x worse, there is no electricity most of the time, running water very few commerce and it's the state which produced the most wealth for the country, Maracaibo was the first city in south America with electricity and now is destroyed because the place always was against the chavista government and communism so you can see the irony.
As you can see people from Venezuela are very friendly and always smiling even in the Toughest of situations. And to the people saying Venezuela is in a bad situation because of USA sanctions let me tell you it all started long before with the government wanting to create another cuba i.e government having all the power and people being poor... you can ask ANY Venezuelan... most probably there is one in your country.
Thanks again Indigo Traveller keep up the great work :)

Hey mate, thanks a lot again for making this video and more detailed, this series in Venezuela. Your friend Lenny is one of a kind; he is so genial and affable. His care-free, level-headed spirit makes your video's shine bright with love and affection. What a camaraderie you both share. When I saw your first video in Venezuela, I believe you said it was surreal. A lot of times when this adjective is used to describe something from another person's perspective, it is not accurate. In this case, it was so. I can feel the good times you're having, man, with these special people. Thanks for sharing these delicate, timeless and resilient moments with us. It makes me feel alive and that there is hope for human beings being good to each other. That all the bad will go away and goodness will prosper. Through humanity and what I saw here and throughout your adventures in Venezuela is what this world needs. I also want to say thank you for responding to my comments so quickly, if at all. It makes me feel good. Like you're listening to me. You must be a special guy. At first, your channel didn't really interest me because it seems like there is copious amounts of vloggers on the internet. Then, I started to watch you and your video's more and more. You know, man, it's not the dizzying camera shots you are able to take and the quality of the visual footage that makes some of your video's so beautiful, it's the relationship between you and Lenny and that I get to see it unfold. Your footage and camera shots are of high quality and don't stop, man! I'm just highlighting an aspect of your video's that resonate with me. I want to travel the world too and I will never stop trying to do that. Be safe, my friend and keep your head up!

People with more money tend to pull themselves away, and close off.
Some people have worked for their money yes, but wealth is very much a family thing, following generations around.
