  • Hi all, welcome to a short demo on the difference between paraphonic synths and polyphonic synths. Although both can play multiple notes / chords they are fundamentally different and in this short vid I show how different they really are.
    I hope you enjoy the video and find it useful - if you do please like and subscribe for future content :-)

    I probably should have said in the video, not all paraphonic synths have 4 voices, it depends on the number of oscillators. My Matrixbrute has 3 oscillators and can only play a max of a 3 note chord and my Neutron only has 2 oscillators and can only play 2 notes simultaneously 🙂

    Thanks for having the only video of at least 10 I could find that actually broke this down in a very easy-to-understand way.

    Thank you for sharing this. I've always wondered what the exact difference was.

    Ok I finally understand it. Thanks a lot, I'll definitely be hanging around. Have a great day!

    Very Useful explanation!

    Very interesting and simple explanation for a complex point. I'm currently looking to buy my first synthesiser but it doesn't make my choice easier.... I have a guitar and (little) piano experience and honestly I'm a little bit lost what to choose. Congrats for your channel, simple and easy to understand for someone new to the synths world.

      Personally I’d choose something with some polyphony, so you can play chords and pads, as monophonic might be too limiting (really just single note bass and lead lines). First synth I ever owned was a MicroKorg XL, but if you want slightly bigger keys the Minilogue with 4 voice polyphony would be a good choose from reviews I’ve seen (allows you to say play a bass note with the left hand and a 3 note chord with the right). The other route is a ‘workstation’ style synth. I had a Yamaha MOX6 (61 keys) which was brilliant and only just recently upgraded to an MODX8+ (88 Keys fully weighted). Something like a Yamaha MX 49 or 61 would be good, come with plenty of presets out the box and can tweak the synth parameters easily, programme your own sounds (obviously the likes of Roland and Korg do similar workstation style synths) 🙂

    Thanks for the explanation and demonstration of the difference between Polyphonic and Paraphonic modes.
    One thing you could change is shorten the video down to single or a couple of examples. No need to iterate and repeat yourself with everything - if someone gets it on two oscillators, they'll know how to extrapolate it to 3 and 4, no need to keep repeating that, it's annoying (I felt like you treat your viewer as a child or a dumb person, but maybe it's just me).

      @@pituspete Thanks for the feedback. There’s a very wide level of knowledge out there from beginners to experienced and my aim is always to present content in the simplest way possible to appeal to and more importantly help the widest possible audience. The majority of feedback I receive is highly appreciative of this clear and simple approach, so apologies if you felt otherwise.

      @@splootyvision don't get me wrong, it was clear and simply explained. All I was pointing out was that there's no need to go over all oscillators one by one because if someone understood the difference on two, there's no need to go over 3 and 4 as it's the same. If they didn't understand 2, they'll not understand 4 either (although I can't see how as you've made it easy to understand)😉
      Imagine a video with hardware that has 128 polyphony, it would take a couple of hours 🤣

    hello I haver read about paraphonic and the point was that the note share the same filter.

    • @splootyvision
      @splootyvision  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, yes that is correct. I was focusing more on the differences in playing them as they are fundamentally different in that each note plays a separate oscillator which gives a very different effect to a true polyphonic synth when playing, but yes they also all share the same filter. Thanks for adding that, I probably should have mentioned it 🙂

      @@splootyvision thanks to you for the whole explanation, I think it could be great if we could see a video where it is shown how the filters are shared as we add voices beyond the polyphony limit.
