  • Zach Marr is back to run down a crucial topic in the world of synthesizers: the difference between monophonic and polyphonic. When looking for a new synth, this is a basic understanding needed to find the right instrument for you. Zach also discusses duophonic and paraphonic synths, as well as the implications of polyphony on analog vs. digital synthesizers. Another point worth mentioning is that a paraphonic synth can use only one oscillator for each note of a chord while a polysynth (generally) has two oscillators for each voice, so a polysynth can produce much richer timbres than a monosynth played paraphonically.

Since polyphonic synths usually have a monophonic mode, I have always thought the following: "A polyphonic synth can be monophonic, but a monophonic synth can never be polyphonic."

A lot of monophonic analog synths, like the SE-02, can get chained together, so they can indeed become polyphonic, as well.
But polyphonic isn't designed specifically for monophonic use and it's never going to be as good as the equivalent monophonic for that.

Pretty Much a Monophonic synth is to make a bass line? Polyphonic is pretty much to make chords? Right?

They excel at one note at a time, so bass, lead, etc....

Thanks for the video. Might want to change the title of the video, though, since you didn't mention duophonic or paraphonic one bit.
