    Hi Gary, great job.I'm doing one now though I'm doing an RAF trainer. Seeing as you asked, I live a few kilometers where this aircraft was based near Brisbane Australia. The soil here is more brown and slightly greyish in colour, definitely not red, although there is that colour when you get more into the desert areas. Love your work. All the best ,Paul.

    I've lived over most of Australia and reddish soil is many in the north and central part of the country..in the iron ore mining parts in the north of Western Australia is a ochre red..most of the country is varying degrees of brown tho'..where i live in south west of Sydney has granite in the ground so the dirt is dull dark grey..it varies from place to place..sandy beach colour in coastal areas in the south..etc

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I should have found out where this one was based and coloured accordingly! I'm guessing it is OK as the north is closest to the threat form Japan... If I recall correctly, Australia and South Africa have the oldest crustal rocks found anywhere in the world.

      Yep mainly agree, living in Qld, tend to find the light-medium grey loamy type soils depending on how dry the climate is and the oxide in central and Western Australia is more orange than red. The go to around Perth and it is basically sand. But I’m sure Gary’s ochre red would be found somewhere in Aus as the geology varies so much.

    Hi Gary, I believe you are 110% correct when you gave the reason for the sprue attachment point to be where it is situated, you will find that is what Tacom and Meng are doing, great work on tne Anson, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia.

      Yes...its called under-gating. Its extremely popular/common with newer gundam and star wars models from Bandai. Those kits are almost all able to be built without glue...so the under-gating helps to keep the visible part from ever needing to get sanded for clean up. Making for a clean visual on the final piece. I wish more companies did that so that the important visible areas are always clean.

      The "under-gating" sprue attachment is certainly nothing new and has been used by a broad range of other model manufacturers for years. Certainly no "infinite wisdom" or "tiny stroke of genius" on the part of either the designer or Airfix, just Airfix finally realising they are in the 21st century and are finally utilising modern model design techniques employed by others. Whilst Airfix have improved in the last few years, they are still a follower, not a leader in the world of model manufacturers and manufacturing techniques.

    The last model I built of the Airfix brand ended its days in the trash because no part fit together properly. It was 40 years ago. It looks like Airfix has made some pretty big strides in the modeling world. Thank you for this video, for this magnificent work and for sharing your talents with us. Hi Gary , Thanks for taking the time to reply , it’s greatly appreciated. Yes l did think the tiny bump’s could have been meant to be lamps but because of the high detail of the kit l dismissed the idea . I built this Anson for nostalgic reasons but unfortunately it wasn’t the Mark one but it still brings back a lot of childhood memories. I painted it silver with yellow bands on the wings and rear fuselage so it will do and l hope they bring another variant out . The ones l used to see had airliner type windows and no bumps on the cowlings . They flew from Usworth aerodrome which is now the site of the Nissan car plant. Our hous was just about a mile from the runway so they used to be still very low as they flew overhead . Thanks again for your help Gary . Regards, Bill .

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      There will be at least one or two future boxings of the Anson because that's the way they roll these days - the smooth engine fairings, roof without the turret and different direction finding aerials are already in the kit. I suspect the ones you would see would be the later marks with the larger fuselage - can't remember what mark number they are but possible T.19? They would maybe need a new fuselage so I'm not sure if they'll go that far, but they may do. What great memories to have!

    Hi Gary , Just found photo of Anson that was based at Usworth in the museum that was formed on a bit of land that was left ove from Nissan , it’s a C 19 .During the long hot summer evenings we used to have there would be about a dozen. Ansons fly over about 20.00 hours every evening and return about 02.00 much to the annoyance of my Dad cos the roar of the engines and the rattling of the windows used to wake him up , it was exciting for me though .. l remember one evening when they came over , there we’re heavy thunder clouds building but the sun was still shining on the Ansons and they looked beautiful lit up against the thunderclouds, you could make out every detail. Because they were away so long , my Dad reckoned they must have landed somewhere befor returning . Happy days Gary when the world was a better place . Regards. Bill .

    Bonza to see an Anson in these colours and markings. The RAAF in the Pacific had no Coastal Command as such. 71 Sqn was one of three AS Squadrons formed to counter Japanese submarine activity along the eastern Australian seaboard. The Anson was the best aircraft, available in quantity, for the task. In the case of this model
    , the trial of this scheme for AS aircraft was successful, but not adopted. One of the few cases of a colour scheme being successful but not taken up by the RAAF.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      They did indeed, green on the right wing and red on the left. I think there isn’t a transparent piece for these. There is a small bump on the leading edge right out by the tip that is supposed to be the light. You can paint them red and green or to make them glisten try a spot of chrome pen to make them shiny then transparent red and green paint on top.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Hornby A Model World is almost required viewing among us! Probably one major difference is that Hornby (and Corgi) sell fully finished items and Airfix sell kits. The workmanship in the newer Airfix kits is evident but they are still at the mercy of the skills of the customer to some extent. Also the volumes are different - I imagine Airfix sell substantially larger unit numbers of kits than Hornby do of finished models.

  • @julianmhall
    @julianmhall ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Re the wing fitting.. I noticed their way that the front of the two wing spars /might/ need clamping to glue firmly to the stub on the fuselage to ensure structural integrity, and if the wing is in one piece I don't /think/ you couldn't do that. Maybe their way is to dodge the bullet of the clamping not being possible.
    Funny you should mention the Airfix parts fit of old. The first episode of the TV series 'James May's Toy Story' he made a full size Spitfire by enlarging a 1:72 scale Airfix kit to full size. Inevitably the parts fit was terrible. When he went to fit the fuselage to the wings I could see it coming when he commented on the gap. Obviously that was an old tooling; modern kits seem very good.
    Nice demonstration of how to do your own masks :) TBH my hand isn't as steady as yours so I'd be inclined to mask the turret in the same way using lots of vertical strips of tape. With the masking putty, could you cover say a whole wing and just cut out the pattern of the camouflage? TBH whatever method used to mask the end product is only as good as the preparation (remember the 6Ps :)) and your preparation is always good :)
    With the gun mounting, would it (have been) easier [or even possible] to fit the ring to the two verti cal supports first and /then/ fit them to the base part?
    IIRC Ayers Rock looks red /because/ of the iron content in the dust...
    Re aerials. I noticed you mentioned fishing line doesn't stick very well.. fair enough.. that answers that question :)

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Airfix definitely intended the lower wing to go on first, then the top wing later, and it works just fine. Yes it probably does help to clamp the forward spar sections together. But the other way seemed to work just as well.
      With the putty you can do whatever you like really, but the general rule is the sharper the radius of the edge the sharper the line of paint. If it is right down to the surface then there will be the tiniest bit of gunk picked up bu the paint, but you can go over it by dabbing with a larger piece of gunk and it comes off no problem. Bit like picking up bits of blu-tack using a larger piece.

      I almost always give my kits a light priming spray before starting construction. It means I can pre-paint anything from small pieces of cockpit to the inside walls, also it helps me find any raised seams when joining fuselage or wing halves. Helps the filming too!

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I use either Revell Contacta or Tamiya Extra Thin, depending on the joint I need. Most of the time the Revell is fine but for visible seams such as fuselage halves I prefer to tape them up and use the Tamiya. Or for wings I'll use some Revell on the alignment pegs and faces hidden by other things later (like flaps, ailerons, etc.) and still tape them up and run some extra thin around the visible joins. Normally for transparencies I'd use a PVA based glue, but for small things like lights I use a spot of extra thin (see the first build video for an example). For things like the rigging I use superglue/CA, likewise for photo etch. Hope that helps!!!

      Lucky chap! I think the oldest thing I ever flew in was a Tiger Moth, but as a space cadet probably a DHC Beaver.

    Hi Gary. Thanks for the inspiration. IM currently building this kit. What liquid chrome do you use please?

      For the really shiny chrome bits I use Molotow Liquid Chrome pens.

    Hi Gary, another great build, definitely on my shopping list.
    The only bit I'm not fond of is the colour scheme, it just looks odd to my eyes for some reason. I understand why you chose that scheme and you did a great job with it, just my honest opinion.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Chris. I'm just a fan of doing something different. It might also be that the Aussie green and brown are stronger tones than the RAF standard schemes. It would look good in Coastal Command colours of white with extra dark sea grey on top...

      Long may it continue that you do "something different",the world would be a very boring place if we all did the same thing.
      Keep up the great builds and videos Gary.

    the wing sprue connectors are now up to what Eduard, Tamiya (and Kenetic, ICM, Arma etal) are doing - that's excellent - lots of little things like that I see in this kit - I think they've had a look at (finally) what others do and lifting their game - This kit WAS not on my list (subject not for me), but I think I want to build this just for the s&gs,,, it looks excellent (once someone makes masks - why Airfix, almost everyone gives you masks now or templates for them!!)

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I understand Airfix are happy to provide the aftermarket with test shots of transparencies but it would be good to have them included. But then I had to buy them for my Italeri Stirling and make them for my ICM Beaufort so it's not a universal thing. But I definitely suggest waiting for a set!

      @tonydrake462 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garys_stuff You are right re the masks - I think I've spent $1000 on Eduard masks over the years (lazy, I did a 1/32 revell bf110 years ago, and it broke me) - I thought the ICM had templates. I know models like my Airfix Lanc and Revell Halifix I've built in the last year just really look better with clean tight masks - I can never get that cutting my own.

    Your decal solution brush is a great idea but as I don't have one yet and being new to the decal solution scene can you use the same paintbrush to put down both micro set and sol cleaning it in water inbetween or would you recommend using a separate brush for both??

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not a problem, these are water based products so rinsing in water works just fine. The main benefit of the watercolour brush is that it is a bit easier for larger areas, but certainly use any brush you like.

    Really nice build, but the hand painted turret frame lines kind of spoiled it for me.

    • @garys_stuff
      @garys_stuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the problem when you're making a brand-new kit for which mask sets have not yet been put on sale - masking that turret by hand wouldn't, in my limited skill set, have done a better job! Sorry it spoiled it for you though.

    Firstly, went hunting for your Anson video to add a comment - F**K ME, HAVEN'T YOU DONE A LOT OF VIDEOS!!!!
    Now the comment - UK tv channel Talking Pictures is currently showing the film Landfall which features the Anson. I know it's in B&W but some nice internal shots, action sequences etc. - inspiration for another build or just an excuse to fly your completed model around the front room!
