This week on Regular Car Reviews, Brian drives the MotorTrend Truck of the Year 2024,
the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado Z71! Is this the best General Motors truck of the decade? Has Chevy
outdone themselves this time? Or is the Chevy Colorado overrated? We dive deep into whether GM has created one of the best pickup trucks of its time, and whether or not pickup trucks have an identity
problem. As always, we'll take it for a test drive, offer our honest critique, and go over all the positives and negatives of the Chevrolet Colorado Z71 in classic RCR fashion.

HEY! I have a 1995 Suzuki Jimny JA22W with just about 70k miles on it. I’m in the Hershey PA area, lmk if you’d be interested in making a video about it, I’m sure your audience would love it!!!
What is this garbage?
Tommy Fenstamocker cheated on his wife, then got mad when you didn’t show up in a full size truck to help him move after the divorce.
And then he busted.
I heard Tommy Fenstamacher wears prescription t-shirts.
I heard Tommy Fenstermacher means Thomas window maker in Germany
Tommy Fenstsmacher came up with the salt trick.
I hear Tommy Fenstamacher still wears heeleys.
"He flunked Prom". I'm deceased
I didn’t even go to Prom… they had me dead to rights…. 😢
I feel like the only way you flunk Prom is if you leave in the back of a cop car after showing up and causing trouble (and getting arrested)
@@Traysandor By the ideal of "Prom" standards, sure. But in a punk world, this person just won the entire thing. A+.
Pointing out the fact that they had all the room to make it more aerodynamic to hit constant 30's, but just to make it "look like a truck" they sacrificed 10 mpg. That's commitment.
It’s weird no one makes a truck that’s low to the ground anymore, you can still have a big bed and towing capabilities and maybe sacrifice some off road capability which no one ever uses, but you’ll have a car that’s easier to see out of, easier to drive, easier to get in, more pedestrian safe, and more fuel efficient.
@@stormix5755 Safety regs. Make the beltline and hood lower, it has to pass pedestrian safety regs for cars instead of trucks, and it cant do that.
@@stormix5755 Pedestrians should stay out of the road.
@stormix5755 It's crazy to me because someone at work had a 2WD Chevy 1500 from the 80s and that thing was barely any taller than the sedans in the parking lot.
My old 4x4 S10 Blazer had just as much interior room as modern compact CUVs, more clearance, and a lower roofline.
My S10 ZR2 pickup had crazy clearance, sat on 31s, had a 6ft bed, roughly 1k in payload and was still half the size of a modern Colorado. Problem was it also had an AWFUL crash safety rating by modern standards.
The Jeep Renegade I replaced the ZR2 couldn't even park in the garage I used to keep the ZR2 to in because it was to tall. A stock crossover with a very cramped interior and barely enough clearance for my needs could not fit in the same garage a body on frame S10 with 3 inches extra lift could.
Now I drive a 22 GMC Acadia because I needed more cargo space and more rear seat room for car seats and it has a similar wheelbase to my S10, a similar width to my Renegade, and yet is so much larger than either.
I dont think a lot of people want bigger cars, I think a lot of people want the same functionality we have had for the last 20 years and the exteriors just keep growing unnecessarily.
@@Nick-ue7iwYeah plus no one would buy it anyway, at least to my eyes everyone here (sw missouri) wants their pickup to make them miserable
10:57 - "This truck exists because societal learning theory exists." - oh, boy! We're getting some old-school RCR literary analysis today! How delightful - time to gargle _Tommy Fenstamacher's backwash._

Needless trucks. I got a 18 tacoma a few month back to replace my 05 sport trac. I own a lawncare business. Before I was fulltime I worked for an engineering company. F150, chevy 1500, chevy 2500, & ram 1500 were the office workers vehicles (we are in shreveport). The 2500 towed rv during hunting season, I towed and used my sport trac as a truck everyday. They all talked ish about it, they asked why i got a tacoma instead of a tundra, trying to talk ish. I told them i dont tow more than 6,500 pounds, they said well now you cant if you need to. Idk why even smart people are like this with trucks. I have a small farm and a landscape company, i use my tacoma as a truck everyday, yet i get smirks from people in full sized grocery getters. Insanity lol
As if you couldn't rent a full size truck/suv at any time if you suddenly needed to tow more then 6,500 pounds
this (I used to be a landscaper and my coworker adored his sport trac).
@stirfryjedi only reason I bought another vehicle is the transmission shop won't return it. The 05 has a 5,300lb towing capacity. Not bad for a little fake truck.
@odnewdylee that's why a full sized truck is called an "Emotional Support Vehicle"
If only the midsized trucks came with a diesel like the rest of the world 😢
I bought one a couple months ago and it’s been great so far. Blue collar cosplay is accurate. I work in finance
Just don't buy one then complain about the price of gas.
Low twenties mpg? Is this 1978?
you seem nice
hey, I respect that you own the cosplay.
@@robertkirchner7981 Low twenties MPG was really good for any vehicle in the late 70s. This Colorado is good by today's truck standards.
@@robertkirchner7981That's what my 2003 S10 got, but to be fair to it the V6 was from the 80s
A company I drive for uses the base model version of these as a delivery vehicle. Even with the lowest power tune, it can still get going pretty well. The bed is quite small, but it can still hold the larger stuff that I deliver (boxes of oil, radiators, engines, transmissions). Only downside is no cruise control as standard, sometimes the 8 speed transmission can't decide what gear it wants to be in, and GM quality control as the one I drive has some electrical faults
I cannot believe cruise control isn't standard. Typical GM.
Yeah before I graduated college in 2023, I worked for an auto parts store for 2 years, and we used the Colorados. Now I'm a GM guy so I already liked chevy, and I really liked the 20 and 21 colorado we had. My only two gripes, and it wasn't the cars fault but the companies, was that they gave us the 4 cylinder 2wd models, despite living in an area with lots of mountains and snow. Sometimes I had to really push that 4 cylinder just to go 20 up a hill, but again that's not against the vehicle, more against the company for not understanding what the store needed. Also funny enough we only had 1 awd delivery vehicle out of 5, for a store in a really rural area, with dirt roads that got lots of snow, but the stores in the city all got multiple awd vehicles lol
@@film-john it is for MY25.
No cruise is wild, I had that in an 06 civic lol. Especially when the engines are electronically managed so much anyways, it seems like it would just be three extra buttons and some wire.
@film-john Ford F-150 doesn't have it in the base trim either. It's a truck thing, apparently
I work for General Motors in engine development, and the L3B engine is very impressive. It's pretty awesome how we've been able to get so much power out of a four cylinder engine.
You guys are almost at mid 2000s Europe/Japan level. Congrats
I saw it on a spec sheet of the canyon a while back and thought it was going to blow up pushing that much torque when my Ford 2.7 (TTv6) was making similar HP with 50 torque more than my ecoboost. For me it's tough to say if I had to get a truck today if I'd go GM or Ford because both the ranger and colorado/canyon are amazing vehicles.
@@Fedro994Qwhat Japanese/european 2000s turbo 4cyl made 430tq???
Do you know why the engine is derated at an ambient temperature above 70-80ish degrees? I’ve heard it’s due to the engine being picky about intake temps
same HP twice the torque
The AC vents and dash looks like they raided the Camaro parts bin.
that’s because they probably did 🤫
@@cartilagehead The ghost of Roger Smith and Co. haunts GM to this day.
And that multicolor subcarpet you see beneath the dashboard and over the pedals looks like crap too.
The AUX switch is a blank switch that is available to install your own load. It is switched to ground, supply your own 12v+. The inverter is auto sensing for when you plug something in.
The tailgate can be set to about 40% up by looping the tailgate cable onto a semicircle on each side of the tailgate. You can put some 2x6s in the bed (cross wise) in the engineered bed reliefs for a level load carrying area for 4'x8' sheet goods, or more.
I had the '21 Z71 and it was nice, but I traded it for '24 71 and the new engine is far superior.

Yup same. Sus!
Now that you mention it, I don't think I have either
Same. Not in my notifications either.
Same
Nope I didn’t get it either
So good getting to watch an RCR video to kick off the week. The four cylinder thing is kinda strange but something to get over. The truck looks great and makes more sense for just needing the occasional weekend utility, which seems like every weekend with a house lol
The real crime is discontinuing the 2.8 Diesel engine option.
My dad was a contractor and I grew up in construction. Mr. regular knows construction guys and how they think about utility
Respect for the guy keeping the CD booklet still lol

@@scunektyea I fr had to check for a new video to see this one
This generation of Colorado looks really tempting. When I was in the market in 2020 the Z71 was for towing but had a huge front bumper, grill, and underbody to improve fuel economy for the V6 so it had no ground clearance for off roading. The ZR2 had the off road capability but couldn't tow. I ended up going with the Gladiator that had both. If I had to choose again today I'd be leaning more towards this, especially for the price.
I bought one of these in the work truck (wt) trim as a secondary "beater" for hauling around stuff. As a new homeowner its been great to grab outsized items from the hardware store but also fit it in my garage. Even in base trim its handles itself for light offroad with the auto-4WD and the G80 locker. Im not trying to impress anyone with a fancy softroader, and the sales folks couldnt figure out why someone who doesnt own a business wants a work truck, but thats me. I didnt buy a truck to impress anyone but do do truck stuff, and thats something the WT trim does a great job of providing.
It accelerated nicely with 3 men sized men in it. Nice.
I’m the size of two men. That’s 4.

As a small truck enthusiast (s10 daily for the last 14 years) my old girl Is getting tired. Blue collar as I am my company provides a truck so don’t realistically need a full size but still want a truck. I was torn between a Tacoma or a Colorado/canyon and this video convinced me to lean more towards my GM roots
The idea of keeping the vehicle like it's a command center of sorts is really heartwarming for some reason
FYI on any GM truck since the 80s, Z71 gets you a eaton rear locker, 2 speed transfer case, skid-plates along with the lick and stick stuff you speak of, been that way for decades.
Plus Bilstein shocks
Hey...it's Justin from Cinemassacre.
@15:12 CD's on the bottom of the visor, in a truck with no CD player, because you don't like the safety notices is hilarious😂

Same power and more torque than my 5.3 from 06.. impressive

I liked this line so much I had to type it out and get it exactly as you said it. Nicely done, professor
Still think about that was it really a great idea for all of Big Detroit Three to stop producing any kind of sedan, wagon and hatchback vehicle???
Imagine they threw this 4 banger with a turbo into a sporty sedan or hatch?
As cool as that would be, you’d still be eye level with every headlight on the road. I had a golf that I would have to put the sunvisor down to see at night.
@@aldo9923imagining this engine going in a Spark. Like I would actually trade in my Fiesta ST for it.
@@aldo9923 ct4-v?
Yes, it was. They're having no problem moving crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. Better to free up production capability for trucks that sell well instead of mediocre cars that only sell to rental car companies.
I like all the newer Chevy's. The interiors are a nice blend of Tesla futuristic with practical buttons for us tactile people.
I love that engine! The dual-volute turbo is a cool setup. As much as it's just more complicated and less reliable than adding more cylinders and displacement, and for basically no fuel economy advantage, I would still buy it and smile at the turbo noises! (Also I would love to tow my crown vic around using a 4 cylinder... for some reason)
"Retro Video Game Business" you mean former backup singer and co-kinda founder of the immensely popular and talented band, REX VIPER!?

I’ve had mine for 6 months now, I picked it up after my ram got totaled and I love it! It gets better mpg in stop and go traffic than my ram did on the highway. It fits my lifestyle and needs perfect. I was cross shopping the Tacoma but at my budget I could afford a base Tacoma or a fully loaded Colorado LT so it was a no brainer for me.
If you think a mid-sized truck has a V8 in 2024, you probably believe gas is still 1.78 per gallon
Hey it's Justin.
Wait is this the same Justin that used to work with AVGN?
I think so. Justin seems like a cool dude but I really hope he's not going to help RCR the same way he "helped" AVGN.
Noticed that too!
@@nikonjimmywouldn’t say he is a cool guy. Still makes edgy insensitive jokes online
@@mattbaillargeon Ugh, thanks for bringing that to my attention.
What's the story behind that guy?
My gen 11 f150 V8 5.4 fx4 is pushing 270k miles and still running strong.
7:55 The custom plate.
This is anecdotal evidence, but I've found more often than not the people who buy these midsize trucks are more likely to use it as a truck than the ones that buy fullsize. They have more of a sense of what they realistically need, rather than going out and spending $70k on a fashion accessory to prove what a manly "real" american they are, but live in mortal fear of the thought of scratching a plastic bed liner
I worked at Menard's as the loading guy during the pandemic, and it was always the midsize trucks that were there loading up patio furniture or stones and the like. The "real" trucks tended to be at most some guy that obviously goes to the gym religiously but for some reason needed an almost minimum wage employee to load his 6 bags of water softener salt. Meanwhile had a older couple in a frontier who was there every weekend loading the bed up to capacity and making multiple trips while remodeling their house. And we had another guy building a gazebo in a last-gen dakota. Meanwhile my 2016 frontier has hauled furniture, chest freezers, engines, transmission, an engine and trans assembly for a 90's 4.0 ranger, scrap metal, and towed a car home to northeast ohio on one of those big uhaul car haulers from Raleigh through the mountains. And it didn't break a sweat
For the VAST majority of people, a truck like this is all they will ever need. Inb4 "well what if I need to tow more weight someday". You're not towing a horse trailer, prob not towing a huge camper, and if that case ever comes up, you're probably better off renting a uhaul once than wasting significantly more money on the initial cost, fuel, and insurance on a "real truck"
Thanks for reviewing my truck, boys! There’s a reason the Apple pick-up truck emoji is blue 🛻

I never thought I would consider a 2.7l turbo from an American car company in a truck over a Japanese option. But, currently I'm looking at this as an option that is justified when looking at the current 2024 market. I like halogen headlights, I never use cruise control, and 27lbs of boost in a 2.7l is fun when combined with a high center of gravity, no weight over the back end, and 265 wide AT tires. I'm in.
sat in one of these 2 days ago at a local agricultural show where a chevy dealer had a booth. they had a zr2 that anyone could sit in. i’m 6’4 with more leg than torso. i did not fit in it with the seat all the way back and all the way down. my knees could not find a place that they were not touching the steering wheel. do not buy one of these if you are tall and are going to drive it consistently.
Im buying one of these tomorrow , a trail boss. What crazy timing for a video ☠️
Honestly one of the best reviews in a while. Good stuff!
Yeah, I loved my Dodge Daytona Turbo back in the day. I was going to drive it forever. 🥹
Then at 70K miles the head gasket went south, turbo was failing also. 😠
No more turbos for me. 👎🏻 My 97’ V6 Chevy still runs like a top. 🙂
Full disclosure. I'm biased for the previous second-gen Colorado. In 2019 I bought a used 2016 with 25k on it. One owner who installed a few goodies. Hard trifold tonneau and some cheap steps. It's an LT 4X4 with the V-6 and the rear locker and uprated tow hitch. So, this truck will do most anything I might ask of it. I've had a full-size squarebody that was a great truck, a couple S-10s that while very different were great in the city where I live. This has proved to be the "Goldilocks" truck! I absolutely love it! Extended Cab and a a six-foot bed. All the tech I'd ever want. Just a good truck, full stop.

I have the Canyon AT4 variant of this truck. The 2.7 is great engine. The AUX button does not turn on the inverter but turns on another device that allows you to hook other devices like lightbars, wrenches, etc. but is a GM option.
that's a lot of boost pressure for a semi-working passenger vehicle I would be concerned abt the long-term reliability
90% of trucks in us don't do any work. it's nothing to be concerned about.
It might last if it were a cast iron block and heads. Even so, there's something unholy and unamerican about an inline four posing as a V8.

Honest I was not too impressed hearing about this truck till I saw the big boy it’s hauling around as a daily driver! Salute to you Chevy 🫡
I am not a Chev person by birth, I was raised under a blue oval. But if you put that 2.7 L turbo in a hatchback. I will evangelize under your banner. I will have come by Chevrolet honestly.
Or better yet give me a dual motor revitalization of the MonteCarlo as an EV.
Better better yet. Make that hatchback a two door!

Had that same thought. Don’t think it would adapt to fwd very easily and it might be very nose heavy?
Those GM 2.7s are known for roller rockers blowing out bearings, just a heads up for anyone genuinely interested! I work at a Chevy gmc dealer and we had a fair share come through our shop
Don't skimp on the undercoating.
The aux button does not control the outlets, it is a dead switch from factory that can easily be wired to auxiliary lights or other circuits that you may want to add. It controls the optional light bar if equipped
It super controls this outlets in this vehicle.

Is this video not showing up in your subscription feed for anyone else? I had to go to the channel to see the video.
Mr. Regular had the Rick voice before there was a Rick and Morty.
I’ve got a the same generation GMC Canyon, and the Aux switch on the dash is just a blank switch that can be wired up to an accessory like a set of off road lights. That’s all it is.
The bed outlet always receives power as does the rear passenger outlet when the vehicle is on.
Had one of these as a company vehicle for a few months.
Questions:
How many times did the gauge cluster crash, reboot and freeze on the highway?
How many times did the stereo forget it had bluetooth?
How many times did the truck apply full braking force on the highway because of roadkill?
How many times did the bed fail to lock when you locked the doors?
Was this one equipped with cruise control, but GM forgot to install the switch pack on the steering wheel?
Was it nearly impossible to maintain a constant speed on the highway due to the immensely oversized turbo?
Did you require physical therapy to address back problems resulting from the awful seats?
Did you ever figure out how to turn the headlights on, because there's no headlight switch?
Did you have creepy meth addicts with missing teeth approach you at gas stations complimenting your truck while staring at your crotch?
Because that was MY experience with the 24 Chevy Colorado.
I was a mindless GM fanboi until I had to live with this truck for 3 months. I will never own another GM product in my life.

The AUX button doesn't do anything. It becomes functional if you have the GM Accessory Power Distribution Box, or you can connect it yourself because it runs to a cut wire near the passenger footwell fuse box that is a switched ground.
I have a part time job at AutoZone and we upgraded our delivery vehicles to these. I actually like it! For what you get this is a nice truck with a decent amount of Braun to reassure you it's a truck. Just not a full size truck. 22 MPG is a lot better than my 2004 Cadillac Escalade that gets 14 MPG City and/or highway on premium.
I have the same engine in my car, it really is a great design. So far the reliability numbers seem good as well.
I have to admit, it's not a bad looking truck. I like this particular spec and color combo. It's giving Toyota a run for their money now. Might even be more reliable long-term. That says a lot comparing it to the Tacoma which is usually the reliability king but with the way things are at Toyota nowadays, not so much.

My first vehicle was an 04 colorado x71 2wd, and I liked its size, the inline 5 was pretty neat too. One day I got bored and wanted to test out the new colorado and that was a diesel z71. Too bad about that junky engine and transmission 🤦♂️🤷♂️. Trans has a federal lawsuit class action against it in both Canada and USA. Carbon buildout for DI only engine.
That might only be for the early gens, not this one.
The federal lawsuit is over the transverse 8 speed, not the longitudal 8 speed. Womp Womp.
From experience also since a friend of mine owns one, the ZR2 version is extremely good. It’s the best value for an off-road top trim truck since I guess it competes with the Ranger raptor and the Tacoma Trd pro I think it starts 5000 less than the range raptor and 10,000 less than the Tacoma Trd pro and you’re not losing any off-road capability it keeps up with both those also the Auto four-wheel-drive is nice. I’m pretty sure that Tacoma doesn’t even offer.
I have a 2022 CT4 V (not blackwing) with this same engine, and it's a very fast engine in that application and the car is a blast to drive.
