    5:00 my native language is french and I always thought Terra and Celes were a mirroring name for ''Terre'' and ''Celeste'' which translate to ''Earth'' and ''Celestial''. I'm surprise to know it wasn't intentional from the original developer. Also names like Edgar and Sabin Rene are also really french sounding.

      I always thought this too, that Terra and Celes were meant to be somewhat opposite: terrestrial vs celestial. Terra learns fire magic, while Celes learns ice magic. Celes disdains love, but Terra seeks it.

    Jokes on Woolsey then, on my very first playtrough, I renamed all the party members, and renamed Celes to Maria (and not in all uppercase). The opera scene came out rather different but I was none the wiser until my 2nd playthrough.

      Yeah, you could do it in Breath of Fire 1 as well. Rename all the characters to one or two names. Now even a simple "Hello, Ken," becomes a 5 minute ordeal as the party struggles to figure out which Ken they are referring to.

    Im a bit surprised that you didnt mention the "imp" was also a western change. Those creatures are not imps, they are 'Kappa', which is sort of a mythological river demon in Japan.

    • @Greywander87
      @Greywander87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But nobody in the West knew what a kappa was at the time; it was a distinctly Japanese creature. It's like how at one point giraffes were referred to as "qilin" in China, because the word "giraffe" wouldn't have meant anything to them. "Imp" isn't a perfect translation, but at least it's a word most people will understand.
      (Sidenote: The Japanese kirin (as in the FF6 summon) is the same mythological creature as the Chinese qilin. It's very different from a giraffe; then again at one point we referred to giraffes as "camel-leopards", which is probably slightly closer to describing a qilin/kirin.)

      I total agree, he's an absolute legend. I have a hard time playing the other translations of FF6 because the lack of Woolsey-isms disappoints me. It's amazing how many of the most memorable lines were him and how much you notice when they are removed.

    • @Greywander87
      @Greywander87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Woolsey sacrificed the accuracy of the translation in order to make it sound as natural as possible. And he succeeded. When you play the game, you'd never guess it wasn't originally made in English. I understand why what he did was controversial, but localization is more than just translation. It does make me sad that many of the remakes were given "more accurate" translations, because they don't feel like they fit as well.

      Not so sure about that first one. His name is written "Masshu" (with a geminated 'sh' sound and a short 'u' vowel), whereas if you look up any famous Matthews on Japanese Wikipedia, it's usually transliterated Mashuu (ungeminated 'sh' sound and a long 'u' vowel). If it's true that his first name was supposed to be Matthias or Macías, as the FF Wiki claims, then 'Mash' somewhat makes sense as a nickname. At least if you're going by Japanese phonetics, that is.

    Despite improving graphics and technology, I have yet to find another game that had the storyline writing of this game. It is a masterpiece to gaming having fun moments, sad moments, desperation, cruelty, and all the characters seemed like different people and not just fantasy characters. Exploring the immense world was fascinating along with the huge variety of stories contained within. Since then, games have relied upon ever increasingly good graphics and technology features to gloss over story lines and actually having to present a unique story at all. Think about all the cool scenes in this game that were actually good enough to elicit emotion... Games these days really just do not put the same level of effort into story writing. Might just be my opinion, but I think that has contributed greatly to the dearth of generic games that have almost no replay ability these days. Same can be said for TV and movies as well. After all these years if I rebought a system that could play FFVI I'd enjoy that game much as I did the first time without a doubt. I feel sorry for the newer generation who will not get to experience the greatness of true story telling. These days everything is 15 second sound/visual bites that pander to addiction levels in the human brain. I feel sorry for those not born to a generation to experience this level of art.

    The original intended way to get Gogo was quite interesting given how odd and mysterious the character is already. I'm thinking they should have left that original way of acquisition as I feel pretty sure I would have eventually tried what was outlined. After seeing one of your characters in the pub, you'd inevitably wonder what would happen if you came back with the character in question. Would the person in the pub change? If it did, who would it change to, and why? Upon trying to see, you'd see the character didn't change at all and would get rewarded. I actually think it would be easier to figure out than trying to get everyone eaten by Zone Eater. The Zone Eater thing was discovered by most people through other sources, anyway, so I don't know why they thought the same wouldn't be the case for people who couldn't figure out that pub method.

    5:49 Sabin vs Masshu? Maybe play testers didn't like the name "Matthew." Masshu can be a literal translation of Matthew. I live in Japan and know a half kid with this name. And even if it is true, 'Mash' seems like a pretty terrible nickname for Macías. It works in Japanese because the 'c' becomes a 'sh' sound due to their phonology, but in English something more like "Massy" (as dumb as that sounds) would be more appropriate. FF1 is really underated lol. One of the few FFs I actually completed along with XII and a few of the spinoffs. I always play through like 99% of the game and then get caught up in so many sidequests that I forget to finish the game and just watch the final boss and ending on TH-cam. Same goes for Xenoblade even though it's my favorite series. I had to force myself to complete Xenoblade 1 and 2 after I got tired of sidequests and still haven't touched X despite owning it and a Wii U. Playing through Torna right now and I hope to finish both that and X before 3 releases.
      For Final Fantasy, I've played nearly every game in the series but have completed very few on them. In terms of chronical release:
      FF1: Played the GBA version and played it to completion. Never did the bonus dungeons because the guide I was following recommend that I skipped them. First FF I completed.
      FF2: Own but never played.
      FF3: Own the 3D version but never played.
      FF4: Own nearly every version of but never completed. The furthest I ever got was in the GBA version during the dungeon in the underground where you lose Kain and get Fusoya.
      FF4-2: Own the 3D version, never played.
      FF5: Own the GBA and old PC releases but never completed. The furthest I got was right before the fire crystal in the first world.
      FF6: Have played the world of balance countless times of multiple platforms but never made it to the WoR. Furthest I got was on the original SNES release via the SNES Classic where I made it all the way to the Floating Continent, only getting that far because the SNES classic was the only device I had that worked while I was traveling in a foreign country where there was little to no wifi and very few outlets in our hotel. Only enough for our lights, a fan, a TV, and our phone chargers so we could call if there was an emergency. We had calling and texting service out there, just not personal service for browsing the web and such)
      FF7: Played first on PS4 but never finished the opening in Midgar. Played again on Switch and I got all the way to endgame but got stuck breeding chocobos and grinding in order to best the superbosses before I raided Midgar.
      FF7R: Played about halfway through and ended in wall market because my conservative dad was watching me play and would get angry when the "gay scenes" in that chapter came on if you know what I mean.
      FF8: I own the original non-remastered PC version of FF8 but haven't played it yet.
      FF9: I do not possess any copy of FF9. One of the few FFs I don't own.
      FF10: Tried it in PS4 and absolutely hated it due to how linear it was and his bad the voice acting was and still is. Worse than FFXIII in my eyes since at least that game looks pretty and opens up 3/4ths through.
      FF11: MMO that I have interest in trying.
      FF12: Favorite FF by far. Beat 100% on PS4 and was incredibly close to platinuming it before I bought it on Switch to 100% it all over again. Never finished the Switch version due to other games stealing my attention but still a very good and underated game.
      FF13: Don't own.
      FF13-2: Don't own and the PC port is trash. Don't own a PS3 to play it the "proper" way.
      FF13-3: Don't own.
      FF14: Made a free account around the time when Shadowbringers dropped, spent 2 hours in the character creator, played the actual game for like 2 minutes, and haven't picked up the game since.
      FF15: Bought the base version of FFXV at GameStop for literally a dollar. If that isn't a bad sign I don't know what is. After a 200 GIGABITE UPDATE DOWNLOAD I was finally in the game and HATED it due to his floaty combat was. No impact in anything, it felt like a Chinese mobile game and the characters were incredibly annoying with their constant quips. Also the feature to have "meaningful moral choices on a timer TM" like Mass Effect or the Telltale games really rubbed me the wrong way. Safe to say I played for like 30 minutes, uninstalled, and never touched it again.

    The Tina Terra discussion is amusing to me. Translation across languages and cultures that couldn't be more different from each other will always be a tricky endeavor. I get that in Japan they wanted "Tina" to have an exotic-sounding name, and I guess once the game came to English-speaking countries they had to go for the same effect since Tina isn't a particularly unusual name here. But Terra, while I guess having a bit more fantasy flair, really isn't either. My own boss is named Terra and we have several variants of that name like Tara as well.
    In fact, as a young American kid reading the dialogue, Terra was one of the few main characters whose name I was sure I was pronouncing correctly. And I later discovered most of those names I'd been saying wrong all this time. I had a bit of a durr moment in adulthood when I found out that Locke's name was pronounced like John Locke and not "Loki" (as in the Norse god) that I'd always referred to him as. XD

    • @Starcat5
      @Starcat5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Naming conventions move in cycles. A name that was exotic becomes a popular baby name and suddenly everyone has at least one relative with the name. Conversely, a common name may fall out of favor for a few generations, only to make a resurgence for sounding exotic to modern ears. And of course region and native language plays a factor as well. The name Terra, derived from Latin, a dead language, is going to sound at least vaguely exotic no matter how common it becomes.

      I initially thought that serge in Chrono Cross was pronounced Surge. Then I convinced myself that it was probably Saer-gay, and forced myself to say it that way in my head for the rest of the game:

    • @DSan-kl2yc
      @DSan-kl2yc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you ever decide to make another Final Fantasy VI Obscure Facts video, I wonder if you'll talk about how part of the reason why as many bugs exist in FF6, or at the original Super NES version, is because Hironobu Sakaguchi had, at the time, badly wanted to play Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, and thus wanted to finish work on FF6 as quickly as possible so that he could play Mystery of the Emblem? Sakaguchi himself was, especially during the time of FF6's development, a Fire Emblem fan. And Mystery of the Emblem was, also during the time of FF6's development, the most recent installment of the Fire Emblem franchise that had released. (Sakaguchi himself pretty much admits this in a shared interview he had alongside the creator of the Fire Emblem franchise, Shouzou Kaga, complete a picture of the two of them holding FF plushies, with Sakaguchi holding a Moogle, and Kaga holding a Chocobo.)

    I considered getting the pixel remaster of FF6 as it was the 2nd Final Fantasy game I had played with FF 4 (I believe it was called FF2 in the US release) being the first game I actually played, but I do have the released one for the PS1 and I'm wondering if the pixel remaster would be the better version to play or not.

    • @krimsonkatt
      @krimsonkatt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      100% yes. The PS1 versions of FF4, FF5, FF6, and Chrono Trigger are infamous for their insanely long load times, though I wouldn't say pixel remaster is the "best version" of FF6. It changed a lot of the character sprites to be more bright and cartoony which doesn't match the game's tone and doesn't include content from the GBA and mobile releases.
      IMO the best way to play FF6 is the original SNES version emulated on PC with either a ROM hack to add back in the GBA/Mobile exclusive content or the "T-Edition" expansion mod which greatly rebalances gameplay and adds a significant amount of new content along with the GBA/mobile content. Or you could get the old PC version (you'll need a steam key now that it was taken off the store) and mod it to have the character sprites, animations and UI from the SNES release. (the backgrounds and enemy sprites of the mobile release are actually really good.)
      Pixel remaster is the most official and accessible way to play FF6 and all the other games, so there's no harm in playing that version. The SNES/pixel remaster versions of FF6 only removed a single post-game dungeon and boss and like 5 optional end-game summons.
      Meanwhile FF4 pixel remaster removed the entire post game, the entire second campeign from the PSP version, like 12 superbosses, countless equipment, the ability to switch party members, and multiple end game and post game dungeons. Other games have it even worse, with FF2 Pixel Remaster removing the entire second half of the game (Soul of Rebirth arc, even though the game still sucks) and for FF5 3 bonus dungeons, 5 superbosses, and 6 new classes from the GBA/Mobile released were removed.
      Edit: BTW the PS1 version of FF6 doesn't include the bonus content, just crappy FMVs and insanely long load times for basically everything. Your best bet is either pixel remaster or a modded SNES version or old PC version.

    • @twelfthknight
      @twelfthknight 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I kinda love the cinematics personally, but the PSone FFV/VI anthology is painfully slow to actually play through. Just walking around and experiencing random encounters quickly begins to drag down the whole game and that's 90% of what you do really. I would say any of the other versions are a better choice, but I suspect the Pixel Remaster is the easiest to get at this point anyways. Well, legally at any rate.

    As far as I'm concerned, anyone that complains about the translations in the US SNES version of FF6, or only wants/plays the "pure" or "correct" one, is entirely missing the point. More accurate direct-translations doesn't mean it's a more accurate experience. The Terra name change is an absolutely perfect example of that after this video explains it so well!

      irrelevant, but a proper translation would've been nice for final fantasy 7's Safer Sephiroth (where it should've been Seraph Sephiroth). like, how do you get Safer!?

      Exactly. It’s only Weaboo types who demand that the translation be 100% literal.
      Localization matters.
      Like, for instance, if a character is meant to be “cool”. A character being cool is going to depend a great deal in what is “cool” in a region.

      I thought the idea of Celes and Terra was clever (heaven and earth)

      The SNES version of FF6/3 was translated in only a month, and had numerous problems. Not "waah localisation changed things" problems. But the kinds of problems which come from trying to write around kidnapping, suicide, death, and other pg13 themes.
      Thats why the GBA script, which keeps a lot of the good localisation changes and fixes a lot of the poor choices, is the current best. The GBA version even has a bit of unique censorship (a scene where Celes is beaten while in chains was altered to remove the beating and the chains), but the translation improvements still manages to smooth out more than the little bit of added censorship takes away.
