    I bought a new RX2 in 1973. It was a screamer for 2 rotors. It was billed as an economy car. The best gas mileage I got was 13.5 MPG. I severely abused that engine and it never busted. Slipped my foot of the clutch at 7,000 RPM. And occasionally miss shifted to third and hit 11,000 RPM. It never broke. But the clutch wore out several times. As did the skinny 13 inch tires.

    Whats it weigh and how much power NA and or turbo. Been thinking this idea for while for an experimental aircraft application. Obviously need a gear box to turn propeller down to 3-5k. But stack rotor and stator after another.

  • @Lord_Ronin_The_Compassionate
    @Lord_Ronin_The_Compassionate 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is there a limit to the number of rotors that can be used? I appreciate that the engine bay size can be a limiting factor, but as that is due to the firewall there seems little to little to prevent the firewall being changed to accomodate anything with 8/10/12 rotors, presumably the next issue would be the gearbox size/position?
    One other thing that comes to mind would be if it was possible to build a couple of 4/6 rotors then have them run side by side and with a connector that takes the double bank output and combines it into one shaft as it goes to the gearbox.
    I wouldn’t be at all surprised if I’m just coming out with stupid ideas but as I’m showing, I’m not much of an engineer, but I do have some ideas/questions/dreams that I’d enjoy hearing what real engineers might think.
    PS - that four rotor looks gorgeous, but I must admit that I’m partial to some nicely anodised parts as well.

    • @crabbcake

    The truth is, aside from length design parameters, there is NO LIMIT as to how many rotors can be stacked together.

    Awesome engine. I'm kind of surprised that I've never seen a bottom block girdle for rotary engines(doesn't mean they don't exist) that sandwiches between the block and the oil pan to limit core twisting. I'm hoping that when they have to make billet housings(ouch $$$$) they might make a custom setup that utilizes thicker studs and maybe external dowels, etc to keep the "block" from twisting and stable more. May not be a problem.with billet end plates being stronger but......Lastly are you looking into custom renesis plates that are thicker to add meat to the exhaust ports/allow for a possible water jacket between them? Other than a higher compression ratio from mazda, that seems to be the weak point of that motor(other than cast iron plates) for turbocharging it. I know that would necessitate a custom eccentric shaft but that's doable. Then you'd have what would probably be a really awesome 13b-renT

    How much would this engine cost? I'm looking for an engine for my next build. Also, what type of transmission could I mate it to for a mid-engine setup? Was going to go with a V8, but this looks interesting to say the least. Thank you.

    I've seen quite a couple of builds now. Can't get enough of these vids. Builds with standard components, machined standard component. I've seen billet blocks, specially build crankshaft. All kinds of bespoke parts, but the rotors used are always (machined) standard parts. Why is that? This build looks like it's compromised (?) by 9.7 - 1 compression rotors. Aren't there any billet, lightweight, high compression rotors being made by some specialist?

    Could you put one in a 1993 Jaguar XJR-S 6.0?

    Just thinking what about a center bearing that is mounted in the center to help support the crank, just like the V8 supercars with the bearings for the main crank, instead of the traditional bearing caps for the crank if you get my drift. :)

    Question:
    Do Rotary engines suffer from combustion Cavitation.
    Has anyone dimpled the combustion chamber of the rotor.
    Cheers crew

    I must be the only guy in the world that has a lot of trouble wrapping my mind around exactly how these engines work completely. Man, they are beautiful in their simplicity.
