Enjoying your journey with this old traxcavator. I had the fun of operating a few back in the 1960's. Even had the privalage of breaking in a brand new one in 1968. What great period in my life, I am 85 now so that was long ago,. Looking forward to the rest of your rebuilding this great old machine.

I've watched these videos and feel the victory you managed to pull off with this machine from the pony starting up till now. You are very persistent and very adept at what you are doing. I'm doing the same thing to a degree with my brother on a little bit newer Komatsu D57 and can appreciate everything that you've done. These machines are not dead, they are just resting waiting for people like you to wake them up.

Squatch253, on TH-cam is your new best CATman friend, he has not rebuilt this type of Cat but the ones he has done are complete down to the ground new parts when and where needed he has the contacts to get old obsolete OEM items for the most part, what ever is needed for his rebuilds
Take it from an old guy , take your time , use what you have , you will get it done . More than any thing else , keep yourself and the dogs safe . We'll keep watching .
The gears and shaft you could not identify are the balancer gears for the 4 cyl engine. Caterpillar installed them on most of their older 4 cylinder engines to smooth out vibrations inherent in the engine. they fit inside the bottom of the engine with the oil pump and have to be timed to the crankshaft when installed.
When I first got my tractor running, I dug a hole big enough for a in-ground pool.....Then Filled it back in!!!.....Metal On Metal, Is Like Ice!!!.....The Gray Ghost!!...Powerful Dogs!!!

Any time I tightened track I raised the side of the machine I was working on to take out the slack and make pushing the adjuster easier whether it was mechanical or grease type. That said I admire your enthusiasm and work ethic. At 75 I wish I still had the energy you have.

Great job on the track adjuster, I was abit emotional when it left its home. Wow you have touched everyone with the music there. At its new home now. The parts look like a auxiliary pto and a sawmill clutch. The machine will lose its history if u paint it. It is what you see and if it works good that's what matters. Like u said. This is a guide to decipher the casting codes. N U M E R A L K O D 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 N = 0 K = 7 U =1 0= 8 M= 2 D = 9 E= 3 R = 4 A = 5 L = 6 If there are 6 letters on the casting it is the day,month and year that that piece was made. Eg U would be 1 M would be 2 (12) U would be 1, N would be 0 (10) K would be 7,D would be 9 (79) There are 6 letters so I would know the date is 12-10-79 or 12th Oct 1979 If it has 4 letters it would be month and year of manufacture. Hope this makes sense
Word of warning,that recoil spring is compressed to nearly 100 tons,it has killed several people that unwittingly removed the anchor bolt and boosh head gone,the repair you are trying is usually done with 3x3 angle iron.
TwinDisc makes clutches and fluid couplings for use in heavy equipment. The part you brought home isn't the whole unit, but just the outdrive portion. Industrial fluid couplings are generally very large, as they have a standard friction clutch along with the fluid coupling, as well as a hydraulic pump, reservoir, pressure/temperature monitoring equipment, connections that run to an external oil cooler, as well as linkages for the clutch and any reversing gear. I volunteer at a railroad museum and we actually have a locomotive that at one point in its life was fitted with a Cummins and a TwinDisc torque converter. It's currently in the middle of a complete restoration.
Love your tenacity, patience, and “can do” attitude.., really like all of your videos, and how that you bring old things back to life ... this “Old Red” series, really brings back memories for me ., my Dad and Uncle were in business together back in the late 60’s / early 70’s clearing land , excavation, and general dirt work, as a kid I would ride along on the bulldozers .., some times I actually got to drive .😊
One thing your going to want to do, is get some protection over your head on that machine, especially since your going to be using it in the woods. Build a cage, or maybe see if that cab near the parts machine can be adapted to the Cat. It would suck, to be pushing a tree, and have the upper part of it break off, and fall on you. Be safe man, and great job.
I COMPLETELY agree!! Those falling branches are commonly called Widow Makers! I already have plans to build a ROPS / FOPS... I thought about re-purposing that JD cab, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to go through all the work to make that fit on the Cat! We'll see! Good thought & thanks for watching!
@@SalvageWorkshop if you build rops, study some others in pics or person. I've seen some that were more likely to kill than to save. That frame style is a bit tricky to fabricate with. Sweeps off the radiator up to the top are almost required to give you good protection on that machine. Loader arm design makes it harder to get a good connection at the front of the operators station. The sweeps help with that. Most of the old cabs you'll find for it have no real protection, just heat retention, and can actually trap you in an emergency.
First and foremost, great job bringing this old machine back to life and getting it home. I like where you're going with getting it to be a viable, reliable machine to use vs. making it shiny and new. "Old Red" has been good to you and your channel growth. Like everyone else, I'm looking forward to more work being done to it by you as you get it back to reliable.

Absolutely! A ROPS/FOPS can be a lifesaver when things go wrong. I wouldn't work a surface machine without one.

First and foremost, great job bringing this old machine back to life and getting it home. I like where you're going with getting it to be a viable, reliable machine to use vs. making it shiny and new. "Old Red" has been good to you and your channel growth. Like everyone else, I'm looking forward to more work being done to it by you as you get it back to reliable.
