  • It's TIME to ROLL COAL on OUTTA HERE!
    Join me on the journey as we bring "Old Red," my 1956 Caterpillar 955 TraxCavator, back to Salvage Workshop!
    Up until now, ALL repairs on this OLD Track Loader have been done in a backwoods barn without power, water, or most of my tools! Despite ALL the obstacles and problems I've run into so far, this old BEAST is ROLLIN outta here under it's OWN power!
    It's been a fun journey up until this point, and in THIS video
    In this video we will:
    - Redneck rig the bad track so it will stay TIGHT
    - Properly honor it's previous owner "Red"
    - Uncover all the LARGER pieces of the Parts Machine
    - Take the OLD Cat for it's first REAL walk in DECADES
    - Load it up & Haul it back to Salvage Workshop
    - Introduce ALL my dogs to the OLD Cat!
    - Show you SOME of the extra parts already at the workshop
    - Discuss the Plans for the TraxCavator
    - A BIG thank you for the 100K Subscribers & all your support!
    - & MORE
    ~

    If you haven't seen the video where we DISCOVERED this Old Beast, then you should also check that one out as well! You'll be able to see exactly where this old beast has been living for all these years!
    Throughout this project we'll pay tribute to it's previous owner Red & those before him that truly knew how to maintain and operate such a cool old machine like this!
    I'll show you that OLD machines CAN be a LOT of work, EXTREMELY frustrating at times, but once running properly, an INCREDIBLE amount of fun!!
    I recently discovered this 60+ year old Caterpillar Traxcavator at an old chicken farm, and the owners have honored me with the privilege of bringing it back to life, and then putting it BACK TO WORK!
    Join me as I take you along on my journey through the many ups and downs of this project! I feel honored to be taking on this project, and I truly hope you enjoy the process and progress as we get this OLD CAT to ROAR once again
    Please enjoy! I know I did!

    Just wanted to say I appreciate you having longer videos than most folks on TH-cam. TV has gotten so awful that I actually spend a lot of time on here and it's nice to have a video that lasts more than 10 minutes at a time!

    I'm 65 years old and its nice to see a young fella that can turn his hand to the old way of doing things you are a pleasure t o watch, that twin clutch attachment looks to be a bolt on to a engine to drive a water pump or drive anything, Keep up the good work Regards Brian from Australia

    Enjoying your journey with this old traxcavator. I had the fun of operating a few back in the 1960's. Even had the privalage of breaking in a brand new one in 1968. What great period in my life, I am 85 now so that was long ago,. Looking forward to the rest of your rebuilding this great old machine.

      That is AWESOME! How cool would it be to be able to break in a brand NEW Cat 955 from 1956 TODAY?!? I would LOVE that! I guess I'll settle for getting Old Red ready to work again! Thanks for the support Lyle, LOTS more to come!

    The gears and shaft you could not identify are the balancer gears for the 4 cyl engine. Caterpillar installed them on most of their older 4 cylinder engines to smooth out vibrations inherent in the engine. they fit inside the bottom of the engine with the oil pump and have to be timed to the crankshaft when installed.

    One thing your going to want to do, is get some protection over your head on that machine, especially since your going to be using it in the woods. Build a cage, or maybe see if that cab near the parts machine can be adapted to the Cat. It would suck, to be pushing a tree, and have the upper part of it break off, and fall on you. Be safe man, and great job.

      Absolutely! A ROPS/FOPS can be a lifesaver when things go wrong. I wouldn't work a surface machine without one.

      I COMPLETELY agree!! Those falling branches are commonly called Widow Makers! I already have plans to build a ROPS / FOPS... I thought about re-purposing that JD cab, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to go through all the work to make that fit on the Cat! We'll see! Good thought & thanks for watching!

      @@SalvageWorkshop if you build rops, study some others in pics or person. I've seen some that were more likely to kill than to save. That frame style is a bit tricky to fabricate with. Sweeps off the radiator up to the top are almost required to give you good protection on that machine. Loader arm design makes it harder to get a good connection at the front of the operators station. The sweeps help with that. Most of the old cabs you'll find for it have no real protection, just heat retention, and can actually trap you in an emergency.

I'm doing the same thing to a degree with my brother on a little bit newer Komatsu D57 and can appreciate everything that you've done. TwinDisc makes clutches and fluid couplings for use in heavy equipment. The part you brought home isn't the whole unit, but just the outdrive portion. Industrial fluid couplings are generally very large, as they have a standard friction clutch along with the fluid coupling, as well as a hydraulic pump, reservoir, pressure/temperature monitoring equipment, connections that run to an external oil cooler, as well as linkages for the clutch and any reversing gear.
    I volunteer at a railroad museum and we actually have a locomotive that at one point in its life was fitted with a Cummins and a TwinDisc torque converter. It's currently in the middle of a complete restoration.

    • @westwindsoz
      @westwindsoz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomasmuller9243 comes down to track alignment. Check between two track shoes as they overpass the front idle wheel. Should be equal distance on both sides of wheel. Tracks should have a set amount of sag in them between upper idle wheel and front. Two tight can effect how the track pulls around the front idler wheel. If off center it pulls in that direction.

      They were commonly found on large generators and more commonly on well drilling rigs, pump rigs, and gas/diesel powered well pumps. E= 3
      R = 4
      A = 5
      L = 6
      If there are 6 letters on the casting it is the day,month and year that that piece was made.
      Eg
      U would be 1 M would be 2 (12)
      U would be 1, N would be 0 (10)
      K would be 7,D would be 9 (79)
      There are 6 letters so I would know the date is 12-10-79 or 12th Oct 1979
      If it has 4 letters it would be month and year of manufacture.
      Hope this makes sense

    My first wife's Dad had a Frick portable sawmill that was powered by a Caterpillar 3 cylinder diesel engine. The main drive belts were on a four belt shive on a hand engaged power take off connected to the crankshaft of the Cat engine. To start the saw turning you pulled the lever, to disengage the blade/mill you pushed it. That looks like the same type of clutch drive. You could attach it to a power unit of some kind and drive various belt driven machines. Old Man Andy.

    The part at 34:52 is an engine vibration counter ballance. Runs off the crankshaft either directly or via timing gears and is bolted underneath said crankshaft. I cant tell you if its off a Cat but looks like it got blown off the crank case from a fleeing big end!. Check the sump on your parts tractor and may reveal its demise. If thats what its off.

      Good to know! I will check that... I do want to figure out what killed the other Cat! Especially the engine!

    In my youth, I drove a CAT 933. At the time, the CAT-caps are very popular. They are yellow/black in real cotton. It was the status that have a genuin CAT-cap. You must have one for your 955!

    At 35 min the gears and shaft that you couldn't worn out the use for. These are a balance shaft assembly for the engine, these assemblies are only used on older 4 cylinder diesel engines. It is timed to the crank shaft and spins a twice crank speed. The weights are at bottom as 2 cylinders are at top dead center.

    #1: Me personally, I would rebuild every single extra part and paint them and they’d be ready to just bolt on.
    #2: Find an antique tractor club where some guys are fanatics about the trax-cavator. They would be an awesome resource for you.
    #3: If you tore this tractor down into 10,000 pieces, sand each piece with a nail file and repainted it with a toothpick, I’d still watch your videos.

      You obviously haven’t restored much antique equipment. The cost and hours to repair/restore the MACHINE will end up being thousands of dollars and many, many hours. You don’t spend time and money restoring spare parts that you may never need.

    You’ve done a magnificent job. I am really tired of all the posts featuring “will it start “ junked cars. You are opening up a whole new world for our appreciation of this machine that built our homes and roads and utilities. Thank you. I have subscribed. Also, you look more intellectual and mature without the beard.
