  • Being able to finally WASH this old beast is AWESOME!
    It's been neglected for DECADES, and it deserves to be cleaned up & treated right!
    I intend to do just that!
    Would you be interest in owning an old track link or track pad from Old Red? I am planning to offer them as memorabilia in order to help raise some funds to put toward some of the MAJOR things this old CAT tractor needs.
    OLD RED Needs:
    ALL New hydraulic hoses, Both track chains, Both upper track rollers, Front idler pins & bushings, All new final drive bearings & seals, Both track tension adjusters, The head gasket, All new belts, All new fluids, Bucket shanks & teeth, New seat, Custom built ROPS / FOPS to stay safe when pushing trees over!
    The parts machine just didn't have it all! I'm sure I'm missing some things, but you get the picture, and I want to get this machine up and going PROPERLY, and it will make for some GREAT content!!
    So if you'd be interested in helping out, please leave me a comment letting me know, or send me an email at salvageworkshop@gmail.com, I truly appreciate it!
    In this video we will:
    - Remove the Belly Pan, Hood, Side Engine Covers, Seat, Floor Panels, Diesel Air Cleaner, Battery Tray & Door
    - Pressure wash the Old Beast
    - Blow it dry with a Backpack Blower
    - Take a look at the issues this old Track Loader has
    - Replace a hydraulic hose
    - Move it onto the driveway and get it ready for the Undercarriage Surgery that is coming up!
    - Replace the Valve Cover Gasket
    - Take a look at the Fuel Filters
    - Make a gasket for the Pony Motor Clutch Assembly Cover
    - Talk about offering pieces of Old Red as a fund raiser for the project
    - & MORE

    If you haven't seen the video where we DISCOVERED this Old Beast, then you should also check that one out as well! You'll be able to see exactly where this old beast has been living for all these years!
    Throughout this project we'll pay tribute to it's previous owner Red & those before him that truly knew how to maintain and operate such a cool old machine like this!
    I'll show you that OLD machines CAN be a LOT of work, EXTREMELY frustrating at times, but once running properly, an INCREDIBLE amount of fun!!
    I recently discovered this 60+ year old Caterpillar Traxcavator at an old chicken farm, and the owners have honored me with the privilege of bringing it back to life, and then putting it BACK TO WORK!
    Join me as I take you along on my journey through the many ups and downs of this project! I feel honored to be taking on this project, and I truly hope you enjoy the process and progress as we get this OLD CAT to ROAR once again
    Please enjoy! I know I did!

    I cannot offer you enough admiration for all the challenges you have overcome and you continue to take on with regard to repairs and restores. As a 68 year old man who always thought he was superman and currently has back problems because of stubborness, I notice that when you bend over to lift certain things, you keep your knees locked (14.51) and all the weight is on your lower back. Please try to get used to using proper lifting techniques. God willing, you will reach 68 some day and I hope you will still have enough energy and physical health to do all the things you want to.

    The pressure on the breather is called "blow by" from the rings. Looks like old red needs some new rings and probably mains. Since it starts and runs so well my guess is the injector pump is good, which is very expensive and why you keep good filters on the fuel. You cannot put enough new filters on the fuel and water traps.

    • @trevor311264
      @trevor311264 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, but the head gasket is also leaking, so my money is on that it had an overheat and the head bolts expanded enough for the gasket to breech. So there is the possibility that the pressure in the crank case is coming from there too. Engines made when this one was tended to have a lot of blow-by anyway though.

      Wrong. Those are all under a lip so no direct spray was going to that area ever. It is from the 1 broken valve cover cap. That took direct and most likely prolonged spray and it drank a little bit of water from that. Very much OEM designed to be on the most vertical point to allow water to enter the engine. IMO that is

      21:20 Shows you it is a sealed cap, with a rubber grommet to allow for torqueing of the valve cover and seal it at that spot but wont allow for over torqueing which would tweak/bend the vc. Over torque would crack the cap and allow this to happen. Then you call up the OEM and order parts; and job security and such.

    That water in the valve cover was most likely from the pressure washing. If it were condensation, it would have mixed with the oil over time and become milk chocolate looking.

      Nope, because every time the oil splashing inside cover gets over 100 degrees Celsius the water will boil off and separate out. But I agree that it is most likely from the pressure washing.

      @@trevor311264 The water turns to vapour with the heat from the engine and mixes with the oil mist and in turn creates a grey sludge under the tappet cover and once that has occurred the it does not separate. that is why all of the later engines have a EPG valve fitted to the top of the tappet cover and the hose connected to the inlet manifold to suck out the vapour's that build up inside the engine.

    • @woopimagpie
      @woopimagpie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed, that water is far too fresh looking for it to be already in there. That has to be from the pressure washing. Had the same thing happen on a Daihatsu car I worked on recently, and it looked EXACTLY like that when I took the rocker cover off. There was no existing water in the oil when I did the job, and there still isn't. It's purely ingress from pressure washing. With the TraxCavator considering how buggered the seals around the hold-down nuts are, and the gasket is basically non-existent, you'd be a fool to assume it was anything else. Water is extremely good at getting into little holes and cracks and splits, especially when it's under high pressure. Nothing to worry about at all.

    You have lots of work to do brother, there's a couple of weeks work on just locating in replacing, removing cracked off and tightening all the bolts alone. I would temporarily paint / highlight everything with a shot of red paint that needs fixing as to address all issues, make a list / catalogue , of all missing bolts gaskets, seals, hoses this way it would help to prioritize .
    As for the scale of work, I would allot in segments, do a full tear down. Get schools, colleges, diesel mechanic instructors involved and try to get whatever financial support and sponsorship you can from Caterpillar and their suppliers as a promotion .
    Another idea.., look at Cat commercials on your channel as another source of revenue, its a tax write off for them.
    Remove both engines and do a complete over-hall.
    The old Track pads as an example could be turned into bench anvils as a means of generating a source of income to further the project. Get others with channels on the Tube involved to source NOS or used parts, o-rings and gaskets nation wide. I would also have everything cleaned de-greased, sandblasted, primed and painted before re-assembly. After it's all completed a full paint job with new decals. From my perspective, on and off between other projects, probably 1-1/2 to 2 years work at a minimum. What I just said is easy for me to say but you'll never know if you don't try, Good luck in your endeavor 👍👍👍

During mice plagues when the D8 was shut down on dark, all the mice would scurry underneath and in the belly plate in a large mound, to get the warmth of the engine and gearbox. In 1988, the old D8 got a full rebuild with new,old stock put away in a shed and she back to life for the occasional earth moving work on the farm. I can still remember brass brushing the preservative off the new cylinder heads, If recall she was a '2U' variant.

      @trevor311264 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Easy-outs don't work unless the bolt is about to fall out anyway. You need to use splined bits or Torx bits tapped into a hole. Easy-Outs simply press what is left of the bolt against the hole, then snap.

    • @Bobbywolf64
      @Bobbywolf64 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@trevor311264 Agreed. What ez-outs are good at is removing bolts that have sheared off, or broken off from overtorquing. They are NOT good at removing bolts where rust has jammed the threads, and the heads snap off from trying to remove hardware. Like you say, the tapered flutes pull the extractor into the badly rusted/broken bolt and actually expand the threads making it harder to remove. A square sided extractor, or in this case the torx bits work better for these situations. I personally move to welding a nut on whats left as my first line of attack, assuming the bold stub isn't too far recessed.

    That thing needs a ground up restoration of EVERYTHING, including engines and clutches and gear boxes and running gear and hydraulics.
    Just in parts never mind Dry Ice Bead Blasting primer & paint - even with free labour, by the time your finished you will have a new “Antique” crawler tractor Thats got more $ in it than it can sell for and it will never be modern like a nice new one. No air conditioned cab or suspension seat etc.
    Unless your an enthusiast and get Patreon sponsors to fund the parts it will send you broke on something you will never get your $ back on.
    Still be a great project to watch, but I’m glad it’s not my hip pocket paying to do everything needed to make it new again.
    Anything you don’t do, will be the first thing to fail and leave you stranded part way through a job.
    You can’t do this stuff in half measures - it’s one in - all in and don’t quit till it’s done.
    Have you got work needs doing on your own property with it?
    If so would it cost less over all to dry hire a modern machine to do the work and hand it back when the job is complete rather than fix up an antique that might die unexpectedly in the middle of the job?
    This needs some serious thought.
    If your just going to patch it up then don’t even start, sell it for scrap.
    If your going to restore it start with one part (Belly plate you removed first - bead blast it back to bare metal, rust convert it, primer and paint it and set it aside ready to install as the last part of a full restoration. Do not pick up the second part to do likewise until the first part is complete and you don’t need to touch it again when it’s bolted back onto the machine.
    Never look ahead more than the one part your dealing with now.
    If your not going to rebuild the rams seals yourself, you could remove the rams and farm them out to be rebuilt while your working on other aspects.
    My 2c. I wouldn’t start because I wouldn’t live long enough to see it through to completion.
