    Hey Ben, congrats on your South Downs Way 50 race! Your pacing strategy was impressive, and it's great to see that it paid off in achieving your A goal of beating your PB time. Your tips on taking care of your feet and packing lightly are really helpful for those of us who are new to ultra-running. Thanks for sharing your experience, and good luck with the South Downs Way 100!

    Ben, I am so happy for you that you did this 50 miler and even beat your previous time by 25 minutes. Good tactic to have the times to be keeping an eye on from the previous runner and also very clever of you to tape your toes not to trash them. I wish you could film the aid station too, but I guess you had a strict schedule to follow and couldn't mess about at the station for too long. Incredible effort, very proud of you, especially after your chest infection.

      Thanks so much Olga, it was great to get out there and race again on such an amazing route in perfect conditions. I'll try and capture some more of the aid station action in the future, it's hard as that tends to be where my hands are trying to juggle water and food too but in Centurion races the aid stations are excellent with a great spread so will hope to get some of this captured in future. Well done Ben. A great run on a glorious day. So glad it went well for you. I remember how long that one lap of the track at the end of a race felt, more like a mile. Interesting what you say about fitness levels being maintained. I have found in my advanced years that any inability to train, even for a short time, dramatically affects my fitness level. As I currently have covid, I expect it will be some time before I get back to even the low level I was at before. Hope your recovery is going well. Take care.

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Peter. We were so lucky, just perfect running conditions. The track definitely looked bigger than the regular one I'm used to training on with my club, just shows how much your mind can distort things when you're exhausted 😅 I hope you recover from Covid quickly, I found it lingered a while when I had it but easing back into things gently helped. I run in North Face Vectiv as well, I love them!😀 This looks such a lovely route (I love anything on the SDW, I wish I lived closer so I could train on it). Maybe one to add to my list of runs in the future. I have 3 x 50kms this year (only did my first last year) so would ideally like to get better at them and find something inbetween a 50km and a 50 miler to test me before taking on such an epic adventure but maybe I need to back myself more and just do it. Great video and great effort sir, congrats!🙌🏻 NDW50 will be my first 50 miler and I’m taking your advice by copying your very own aid station splits from last yr, which is probably a little ambitious!🤣 I noticed the times at the SDW50 seem to be a fair bit quicker than NDW50 despite similar elevation. Would you say the SDW50 is more runnable than the NDW50?

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jim 👍 The other thing I would say is to find splits of someone who did the time you're going for who seemed to pace it fairly evenly or went through each aid station in a similar position because of course if you find someone who went through the first station in 1st and ended up 40th for example probably suggests they went off too fast 😅 Yes, the SDW50 is definitely more runnable, the trails are more open too which means easier to find a rhythm and the descents more gentle. There's also fewer gates and the course as far as I can tell from everyone's strava data is actually at least 1.5 miles less than the NDW50 which also helps!

    • @jimgoldie4338
      @jimgoldie4338 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timeonfeet yeah that’s a very good point re the splits. I watched your NDW50 video and you seemed to pace it pretty well so hopefully will give me a good idea. Interesting that the SDW50 is more runnable and perhaps a little shorter, maybe I should’ve opted for that for my first 50 miler!🤣

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jimgoldie4338 You'll be pleased to know the NDW50 does have a couple of advantages over the SDW50 though! It is more covered so on a really windy or sunny say you're a bit more protected. The climbs are also sharper on the NDW50 which makes it easier to know when you should be walking or not. On the SDW there are quite a few gradual or 'sneaky' climbs where you think to yourself 'should I be running or walking this?'
