    Well done dude! I was marshalling at Reigate hill and remember you coming through. Congrats on a great race! I was hoping to run it this year but injuries put a stop to it. Marshalling and helping guys like yourself achieve their goals was really inspiring and seeing what you went through gets me amped for next year 👊

      @timeonfeet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Jordan, I really appreciate that. And thank you so much for marshalling on the day. Like I said in the video, it makes such a difference to have the support of the marshals and volunteers. Definitely couldn't do it without you guys! Hope the recovery from the injury is going well and look forward to seeing you out there at next year's race.

    Absolutely epic Ben! You truly nailed it mate. That was a real masterclass in racing there mate. You looked strong throughout even in the moments where you said you were struggling. You really did yourself proud mate! So inspiring. Great to see you in the flesh on the day too I am sure we will cross paths again in the future. Glad that you managed to get the help to get up to London to see your family member in hospital and huge kudos for the Centurion staff member for helping you out. Great video and a truly inspiring run. Enjoy your rest and recovery buddy! 😎🤘🏻

      Thanks Ben - good to see you at the top of St. Martha's Hill in full 3D for the first time! Cheers for the support there and I'm sure the other runners will have appreciated your support there too. Well captured, Ben. That's an epic looking course. Well done on the race strategy. You totally nailed it but only after meticulous preparation. Well done!

    Stoked to hear you nailed the A goal!!

      Cheers Neil. I know it's a really popular cycling spot around Box Hill though I know a lot of them like the ride down more than the ride up! Was very pleased with the training and outcome. It was always going to be a bit of an unknown this distance but came together. Loved exploring a new set of trails too, beautiful along the North Downs. Thanks for the support

    Brillaint video, Ben and well done on your race - top 20 in your first 50 - that's fantastic! I did the race as well but much slower than you - 11:38. I had been hoping to do sub-11 but didn't quite have the fitness on the day and didn't help myself with a wrong turn towards the end. But I did enjoy the race nevertheless, helped in no small way by the amazing volunteers. This race was a bit of a training run for me as I'm doing NDW100 in August and the 50 is the first half of that route. I do like your idea of using the splits of someone who had done your target time in a previous edition - I might use that tactic as well. Thanks and keep going!

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Adewale. Congrats on the NDW50 and best of luck with your prep for the 100. That is a great challenge to take on. I know how hard the 50 is so the 100 sounds like a really epic run! I found the splits tactic really useful on the day as a good rough guide on where you are in relation to your aimed finish time. Hope your training is going well and thanks for taking the time to comment 👍

    Solid run Ben! I'm looking to do this race next year. Good luck with the shorter distances and the SDW50 next year. SDW50 is an amazing route but I guess you know it quite well with the South Downs on your doorstep!

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks James! It's a great 50 to do. Very different to the South Downs Way in that you have more tree cover on a hot day and less exposed to wind, softer trails but if it rains it holds the water more too so can be muddy though we didn't have that issue this year. Can be harder to find a rhythm on the NDW too with the amount of gates and narrow paths. Those are the key things I've found running mostly the South Downs and then the North Downs for the race too. Really looking forward to doing some trails I know well for the SDW50 next year!

      Thanks! I've used a few tricks to help with it during training like breaking up the distance, focusing on reachable goals within the race like getting to the next aid station and just flowing with the terrain and accepting that discomfort is just a part of the process. Still working on it but those are a couple of things I find useful

    • @OpenDoorYogaSLC

    you've got a talent for this ultra running lark, be interested to see what you do next? It was a great day, I was very nervous about the hills, so took them very easy, was ahead of schedule before box hill, but lost a lot of time over that section. Congrats on your time, amazing performance, shows what can be achieved with proper training.

      @timeonfeet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Nigel and well done to you too - we made it! Good to meet you in real life on the day at the start and finish. That section from Box Hill was tough - I'd gained some time from the easier bits earlier on so tried to take my time on it. But even taking it easier didn't really make it easy. I've got a couple of ideas of things I'd like to do for the second half of the year, a couple of ultras in there but probably some shorter stuff too. I'm booked in for the SDW50 next year so that'll likely be the next 50 miler but will see. Have you got anything planned next?

    • @nigelb1851
      @nigelb1851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timeonfeet I'm actually thinking of SDW100 but perhaps in 2024. Some friends are doing SBYU this weekend, so may do that next year for something different. Other than that, this year I've signed up for Suffolk 50k in September, and I'll probably do the Stort 30 again in October as its a relatively local to me. I'm sure our paths will cross again sometime, it's a close community 😁

    • @timeonfeet
      @timeonfeet  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nigelb1851 That sounds a great goal to have the SDW100, I'm volunteering at that in a few week's time so will be good to get a feel for the event and it's just up the road from me the 70 mile or so point so will give some support to runners at that tricky point in the race. It sounds like you've got some good plans for the rest of the year. Im running Brighton Trail Marathon with Carla next month so will be documenting her first marathon experience but need to get some races booked for me too after that. Sure I'll see you at another event soon!

      Congrats to you too, hope recovery has been going well this week. Battery life on Coros Apex was amazing. I had it on map mode and at the end of the race I still had 73% battery left! The battery is meant to last about 32 hours on full maps and GPS mode though I haven't tested this myself. Harrier vest was good. It's taken me some getting used to as you have to adjust the straps and chords carefully to fit you so it doesn't bounce but once you have it nailed then it's good. Decent accessible pockets and a place for poles too. I swear by active root now, not as many carbs as Tailwind but I find it sits so much better on the stomach.

      Thanks Nick. I felt ready to run again after 4 days with the NDW50 but I tend to play it cautious and I said to myself I would take a full 7 days off running. I've done the same with the other 4 ultras I've done too, ready to run in 3/4 days but play it safe. I do a lot of active recovery in the first week after a race though with elevation, cold baths, sea swimming, walking, cycling but all gentle stuff. It really depends on the length and difficulty of the race for how soon after I would race again but if it was an ultra, I'd leave at least a few weeks
