Great insight to a backyard ultra for us normal people! Looking forward to my first this June. Some good tips, I can see how it can be forgotten that it’s still an ultra! Great effort. Enjoyed that. Thanks
Thanks Francois 👍 It's a funny format to get used too, when you're feeling good you can't push on and when you're not feeling so good you have to push on to get the loop done in the hour! But really good to be able to run with the whole of the field.
🎉💪🏻🏃♂🏅WOW 100k+ BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO!!🏅🏃♂💪🏻🎉 Not just incredibly impressive running Ben, but very impressive video making too... like your running it too is also going from strength to strength!!! I wonder, have you been influenced at all by 30SomethingMike? Or maybe , just like running, it's something that happens quite naturally through consistency? What a phenomenal experience, truly inspirational!!! You can't imagine the effect it has on us fans watching your progress over the last few years Ben, you and Carla too, so thank you so much for all the inspiration by sharing your journey!!
Thanks Bev 🙏 Really good event this one and it was great to get a feel of what the backyard experience is like. Big fan of Mike's videos, his story telling and editing is 👌so wouldn't be surprised if watching his videos has subconsciously influenced how I try to put together my own! Thanks for watching and hope all's going good with you
Nicely done, Ben 👍🏻 That night time section of the race seems like the real test. The sunrise must be enough to give anyone a bit of a spiritual experience at that point! 🙂
Thanks Mark, certainly was! The night was long but a good reward at the end and nice to know that I can get through a long night if needed in future races!
Fantastic video, great job putting it together. Backyards are exploding in the UK at the moment, nice to see how they're going now that the weather has turned.
Thanks 🙏 This event has just had a summer edition too so nice to see people doing it in warmer conditions too! Hoping to go back and do another backyard at some point, pretty cool format
Well done Ben, I've never tried a Backyard Ultra, they seem to be popping up more often & 'Beware the Chair' is good advice, once you sit it's hard to get up! Sunrise coming up makes a huge difference to a flagging runner, such an experience to have 😀
Thanks Martin 😀 Yeh they really seem to be taking off the Backyard format. We've got two in Sussex that have popped up this year. Although i tend to prefer point to point I definitely wouldn't rule another backyard out after this event, was such a good one
Mate! Simply epic! What a cracking performance! To knock that out after a full day of work is madness. Some stunning scenes in the morning there mate. Know what you mean about the light lifting your mood. Huge kudos mate you have inspired me to consider this format for something in the future. Some superb work from Carla too!👌😎🤘
Thanks Ben! Really different race format to set distance ultras but was good to try it out, very surreal coming back to the same spot but great sense of community around it with everyone setting off together every loop. I imagine on some courses it could feel pretty samey but this was a nice varied route which really makes a difference. Thanks for watching mate 😀
Another great video Ben, the quality just gets better. I've always fancied having a go but am reluctant as I may only do 6 or 7 yards - the local one for me sells out quickly and I wouldn't want to take the spot of a someone that's a more capable runner. The memento box and coin in that event was awesome!
Thanks Richard. You should go for it if you'd like to give one a go. I think backyard are a chance for everyone to push themselves whether that's going for several hours or several days! It's a really cool memento, was well happy with it 🤓
Epic, Ben. The quasi-spirotual quality of seeing the dawning of a new day from God / Mother Earth / Nature / A Random Collection of Chemicals resonates. This reminds me of a race they used to have up here. Devil Takes The Hindmost (to continue the religious theme). 400m repetitions of the track. Last one across the line leaves the race.
Thanks both, it was a pretty special moment, got to be up there with my top running experiences with the slog of the night being finally rewarded! That is a great name for a race, hadn't heard of that before. We've got Devil's Dyke nearby which I always like hearing the mythology about.
Awesome video Ben. Definitely wetted my appetite for the summer event which Darren graciously deferred for me! How long before the event starts would you suggest to get there to get all your seating area set up? I also want to pick your brains about this route. Im thinking i could train on a loop on my treadmill to include those inclines if i can work it out somehow!
Thanks Phil, it's such a good event. You'll have a great time 👍 I got there 1.5 hours before it started and that was enough time to get set up before the race briefing so that should be fine for you. I'll send you the elevation profile on insta. Any questions on the route just let me know, happy to help! One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the downhills are also quite sharp after you've done several laps so training the quads for those is important too
Treadmillrunningphil!!! 😜Just teasing, Phil, 'cause no question I too get plenty of miles in on the treadmill when needed , MUCH helped by the Runseek Running Music youtube channel to train at maintaining my cadence too... you can choose your cadence and I LOVE their music so for me it's been a real godsend on the treadmill, gotten me through some long hours!!!
Thanks Ben! I think on this course with the elevation I could probably do 24 yards to get to the 100 miles but on a less up and down course a bit more 🤞
Great stuff Ben! Love watching your videos 😊 Where do you keep your GoPro while you’re running ? I find the image stabilisation much better when using the handle (I have the creator kit) but I haven’t found a comfortable place to store it where it’s easy to get in and out. Any advice ? 😊
Thanks for watching Bridie 😀 I keep the GoPro in one of the pockets of my harrier vest - it can go upside down in there when I have it on the mini gopro stick I use for filming. If I haven't got my vest with me then I use a decathlon waist belt which has a waterproof pocket bit enough for my gopro
It's very much down to personal preference. I saw several people wearing road shoes in the winter edition I did but I went for trail for a bit more protection from the stones and also to help with the bits of mud there were. Can't imagine there'll be much mud if any in the summer edition though

I love the whole vibe of backyard ultras! You did an amazing job, Ben! 🤓
Thanks Heather, they're pretty cool events, was great to try one out 😀
GORGEOUS art Carla!!!!!🥰
Thanks Bev 🤓
That morning light around 730am looked so epic … well done mate - very impressive, especially after a days work! #dontforgettheantichaffing
Thanks James. It was a pretty amazing experience when those lights came on. Definitely won't forget the anti chafe in future 😅

What an endurance challenge! I like the idea of it, sounds comforting, even though it's hard. Not that I would want to do it myself. Well done, Ben.
Thanks Olga, it's pretty different the whole backyard thing but really enjoyed taking this on!
Such a great videi again Ben. Lovely to share some of the exoeirnce with you and the other runners 😊
Good to see you there Laura and thanks for the footage and supporting the event 🙏
Wow, missed this one! Such an amazing job you did out there! Congrats, Ben! Love the atmosphere of those races and also that crack of dawn!
Thanks Mihai, it was pretty cool to take on a backyard challenge and great reward when the light finally came up!

Super cool event. Great achievement! I'd love to try one of these one day.
Thanks! It was such a good event and a nice challenge with the loops
nice video, makes me wanna try a backyard ultra
Thanks Martin 👍 it's a pretty cool race format, worth giving a go

Wow I can't believe you've done it after work too!
I guess at least it's easier after work rather than before 😂
❤❤❤

@@timeonfeet What was your final total elevation gain, Ben??
@@bev9708 It was 8747ft in the end
@@timeonfeet 😳😮2666m😲😳 WOOWWWWW!!!!!!!! You sure picked a tough backyard ultra to cut your teeth on Ben!!!!! BRAVO!!!!!!👏🏻💪🏻🏃♂🏅💪🏻👏🏻
Well done Ben! with the right training (and anti chafing) how many yards do you think you could manage? or impossible to guess
Thanks Ben! I think on this course with the elevation I could probably do 24 yards to get to the 100 miles but on a less up and down course a bit more 🤞
Looking forward to seeing those! great work on the videos we really enjoy seeing them @@timeonfeet

Ben what shoes would you recommend for this course? Could road shoes be used?
It's very much down to personal preference. I saw several people wearing road shoes in the winter edition I did but I went for trail for a bit more protection from the stones and also to help with the bits of mud there were. Can't imagine there'll be much mud if any in the summer edition though
