    Congratulations James! An epic run - you captured the scenery so well. Your technique after one hundred miles was still sharp, that’s incredible 👏

      Woah, that means a heck of a lot coming from you man, thanks! It was great to share a half mile of banter with you that day before you left me in your dust - I hope to see you on the trails again some time soon 🤙

    just subbed great video well done on the 100 miler . Iv'e just raced my first 50k and am thinking of doing the south downs way 100 . This might sound a bit unrealistic but I would like to beat the sun going down how many hours would that give me?

    • @runjamesrun
      @runjamesrun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Race starts at 5am and sun sets about 9:45pm so you’d need to make it round in under 17 hours to finish in daylight. This year that would have meant 7th place overall, or female winner position. If that’s achievable then by all means go for it, but my advice would be not to worry about the nighttime stuff - like the other elements of an ultra it takes some getting used to but improves with practice and in my opinion adds to the sense of adventure in a race like this! I know it looked a bit bleak in this video but nobody and nothing is looking good in the last 10 miles of a 100 ;-) Definitely give this race a go, it was a tremendous experience, and let me know how you get on!

    Hi James, loved the video. I wanted to set up a route with pacepro on my Garmin and I wondered if you could send me your gpx for the activity which would include the start (on private land) as this is not included on the one from centurion. Keep making the videos

    Nice video and awesome finish time!! Well done. I've cycled that route and it is not an 'easy' 100 by any means. Think I may have to do it one year - thanks for inspiring!

    • @runjamesrun
      @runjamesrun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! There were plenty of cyclists out while I was running - looks like fun, although pushing up the hills and dismounting for all the gates, less so 😆

    • @bigadventuresonaveragetale1563
      @bigadventuresonaveragetale1563 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@runjamesrun totally agree on the gates (although not as bad as the trans cambrian way!). I managed to cycle up every hill but one, despite carrying camping gear. But they were hard work! Trans Cambrian is a great, really remote and wild, trail worth checking out by the way

      Hah, you're very kind. I was pretty well prepared, but also very lucky not to have suffered any major mishaps as can so easily happen on a race like that!

  • @ChrisBranch

    Great video, thank you! I’ve just signed up for next year and … I’m terrified! The thought of 100-miles is killing me 🤦‍♂️😂
    When you said you started the race aiming at a certain intensity, what heart rate were you aiming at, and do you think it was the right level? Thanks 😊🙏

    • @runjamesrun
      @runjamesrun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on committing to the race - I'm sure you won't regret it, even if you have a healthy amount of apprehension right now 😉. For most ultras, and certainly for a 100 miler, you want to spend almost the entirety of the race in your Z1/Z2 range. It is OK to let it tick up briefly but if you find yourself regularly in your tempo zone then you'll likely accumulate a lactate debt that will seriously hamper your chances of success. The key to these things is not to run fast but to manage your nutrition and effort levels so that you can keep moving forward for a really long time, and it took me a lot of practice to get comfortable running as "slow" as that requires. It likely means walking up most hills, which feels counterintuitive at first, but you more than make up for it by simply not needing to stop and rest because you've overcooked it. Best of luck to you - I look forward to hearing how it goes!

    • @ChrisBranch
      @ChrisBranch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@runjamesrun perfect, thanks. I definitely made the mistake of going out too hard in my last ultra; I'm going to try and get it right next time!
