I was at a Q&A with Bill Aucoin in 1998, and he talked about that interview. He said Ace HATED doing pre-interviews, and after the pre-interview, Tom Snyder's people told him that Paul & Gene were the leaders and would do most of the talking, Peter would talk if asked a question, but Ace wouldn't talk. For whatever reason, Tom felt obligated to ask Ace a question - and he wouldn't shut up!

When he said his flaw was his ear, I was like what 🤣🤣 He really couldn’t admit any other flaws lol. The Tom Snyder interview is wonderful. They should’ve put the plumber part in the documentary.
In my opinion, I liked the documentary but it's not perfect. I love the never before seen footage from the 70s and 80s. I love the story telling and I love how they brought in Bob Ezrin and Eddie Kramer. BUT! I hate that they never talked about about Rock And Roll Over, Love Gun, and Alive 2. I hate how they blamed Vinnie and Eric's makeup as their downfall in popularity. It was people being burned out and I Was Made For Loving You that made them go out of popularity. I hate how they said the non-makeup albums were failures even though Animalize, Lick It Up, and Crazy Nights went Platinum while Asylum, HITS, and Revenge went Gold. They should have also talked about the deaths of Neal Bogart and Mark St. John. But all in all it was a cool documentary with some great footage and stories but some lies and messed up timeline bring it down for me. I give it 6/10.
I made the same comment to my brother about how Paul blamed Vinnie and Eric's makeup as their downfall instead of the choices they made a few years prior. I also felt like part 1 was rushed and a lot of important parts of the 70's were glossed over.

@@anthonyx9481 Gene also does. When Eddie Trunk once asked why they have Tommy & Eric Singer in Ace & Peter's costumes and makeup instead of coming with new characters, he said, "We tried that with Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent. It didn't work." Also, according to Vinnie, the Egyptian character was PAUL's idea, and whoever they got to replace Ace was going to be that character. The real downfall of Kiss was going in a more pop-oriented direction with Dynasty and Unmasked, then trying to make a concept album with The Elder, leading fans to go "WTF is this?!". Creatures Of The Night is a great album, but a lot of fans had given up on them by then (as shown by the dismal ticket sales for the US tour), and it took years for it to go gold. Taking off the makeup in 1983 and rebranding themselves to fit in with the burgeoning hair metal scene revitalized them. They were all over MTV in the 80's, and their albums sold well.
Everytime you bring up the scam first farewell the sheeps always say "it was a farewell to ace and peter not the band" even though they have radio and video interviews saying verbatim it's the end of the band...anyone else wearing the makeup would be diluted....etc. The sheep just start covering their ears and go lalalala can't hear you.

I do remember Paul saying that it was the last tour of the original line-up, suggesting Kiss would continue afterward. but at the time I imagined they would maybe go back to the Eric Singer/ Bruce Kulick line-up. makes you wonder what would have happened if Peter hadn't left before the end of the Farewell tour. Would they have come back with Tommy and Eric in make up at the same time?

The makeup was cool nostalgia for the reunion but it really should have come back off after that tour. They never stopped pretending it's 1977. Even with Ace & Peter gone again it hasn't stopped. They just have controllable versions of those two guys now. There would be no new 20 year legacy from this lineup because all Gene & Paul are interested in is living off the band's past. The makeup, the characters, the music... It all looks and sounds like it's 45 years ago. KISS isn't celebrating its past so much as leeching off it.
@@byronmacdowell3732 true, well said. I specifically mean the legacy of Tommy and Eric. Nearly twenty years with their own characters what could've been? I think they could have had two versions of KISS original line up with makeup for special occasions and have Eric and Bruce for new material.
@@corvettemustang1 -- That's what I always said. They should've rehired Bruce and continued with the way things were before the reunion. Thanks for the review Dr. Fukk. So rare to have all the original members of a band as old as Kiss still alive and in reasonable (As far as we know in terms of Peter Criss) still alive. Let’s hope differences can eventually put aside & they can eventually do something/anything together again.
Even though KISS was not filling the stadiums for the Creatures of the Night tour it was so much better than the 3 previous albums and the ones that came later.
Love "The Elder", always have. I'm with you Doc... I'm in the middle with the A&E documentary. Glad I saw them one more time in 1996 on the "Reunion Tour". All original members, early on in the tour & Peter sang "Beth". The Tom Snyder interview was magic! I agree, it's one of the best Rock n' Roll band interviews ever!
WHAT I WROTE TO PAUL STANLEY: I can't believe you said that Ace and Peter didn't deserve the same amount of money that you and Gene got on the Psycho Circus and Fare Well tour! Yes! You guys have steered the ship after Peter and Ace left. But When they left, you weren't making no where near the amount of money or selling out stadiums like you were until they returned! You can't deny that! That was wrong! Especially after they proved to you guys that they could do a good job on the reunion tour! And did it your way! You were being greedy! Before they came back you couldn't sell out the Creatures tour or even the Revenge Tour! In fact! You had to cut those tours short! Peter and Ace saved your asses and brought back the interest in the band when you guys were floundering! DENY THAT! You and Gene continue to disappoint the Kiss fans by putting them down and not giving them the money that they deserve! And you wonder why they drink and took drugs! If I wasn't feeling any worth in the band and I'm working hard I might turn to drinking and drugs again as well! You can thank any success that you have today to Ace and Peter! Because without them coming back for those few years Kiss might not be where it is today! Which isn't much I'm sad to say!
Watching it with subtitles, some bits were odd, like when Ace left the last time, there was something in the subs like "He would hide drugs in the wristbands of his outfit", but the line was never spoken, or edited out.
@Abe Froman like cracking jokes and doing funny pranks that is lighten up nit act like stuffy people that paul and gene are so it is a business not your to enjoy your work that is what Ace did or Peter than less about the money okay
This video should be used as a dislamer right after the A&E special. Ralphie, you hit the nail on the head, great job! I couldnve said it better. Im a huge kiss fan and the old fans know how it is. We still love them, but this is the truth. Lol fucking good job my friend! Keep it up!!
Paul had an addiction and kind of admits it - touring. It took a toll on Peter and Ace, and it even took a toll on Gene, but Paul makes it sound like Gene was always away acting and contributed nothing in the 80s. They needed breaks from the tour and each other, but he was so driven to get back out there on the stage, he pretty much drove KISS into the ground multiple times.
You nailed this perfect. I have to subscribe. I remember when ace was trying to get out of the band the first time. Ace had to spend a shit load of money on lawyers because Gene and Paul needed him to stay because the record contract at the time was only good as long as ace was in the band. That's why Ace was on the creatures album cover and why the killers compilation came out.
I hated when Paul said it would be disingenuous to create new characters so he gave Eric and Tommy the Catman and Spaceman makeup. Like that's not disingenuous?
Every KISS show before 1996 I went to was 60% capacity. Anamailize, Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade did sheds and was the most full, packed. Revenge back to 60%.
Once the money talks, the BS walks. Remember the spectacle that Motley Crue did with signing a contract that they were “retiring” as a band? I heard they were cutting a new album and I saw the footage of Vince “Humpty Dumpty “ Neal touring and wheezing through a set list trying to get in shape for a Crue tour.
Hey Ralph, Chris here…… huge KISS fan from when I was 5 in ‘77. I agree with your views 200%!!!!!! Gene & Paul are full of smoke & mirrors & have been for years depending on what suits them. Great video buddy!!!!!!
You and I seem to have a very similar musical Journey. I started out on kiss and then it was into the new wave of British heavy metal. But I'm sitting here listening to you talk about kiss and I'm nodding my head up and down like people do when they're in church I totally agree 100% with everything you're saying brother.
Yes, I’m watch the KISStory on my phone since afternoon or night. I have been KISS Fan since when I was 15 years old like 2 years ago. When my grandpa and I went to the KISS Concert in February 9th, 2019
I well know this can never happen, but wouldn't it be just too frkn cool to for once see a full on quality Kiss documentary? totally from Ace & Peter's perspectives, as if Kiss was truely their band, with all of their songs highlighted, and a bunch of old video clips, also only with Peter & Ace telling the best stories, and being interviewed looking back plus narrating it from nowadays exactly the way Gene & Paul has always done, ah just a dream ! However, I'd seriously settle for a decent current interview of them together reflecting on their early days in Kisstory 🤘
@Daniel Strickland they played music that sounded like Kiss but wasn't them. For example there was a sound in the background that sounded like I love it Loud but slightly different
The one thing that only die hards noticed is that on the doc 2 there was a 5 sec footage for an unreleased video of "I" from the Elder , I hope the full video will be released
I really thought it was a very great told story, there was stuff we knew, some bullcrap stuff. But my biggest problem is that Ace and Peter weren’t there. They say they didn’t want to, but I’m sure Gene and Paul wouldn’t let them. The biggest insult was they let the scabs interview but not the original members. I’m happy Peter didn’t let them use Beth because he wasn’t in it, but I think Ace and Peter should be in it. I give it about a 7 or 8 out of ten :)
Ace said recently, they wouldn't pay him what he felt he deserved to be in it. Guessing that's the same reason Peter refused to let them use "Beth", as well.
There are so many nuances to this story. You really have to watch several documentaries from different perspectives to get the whole story. The A&E doc had some interesting stuff in it.
Thanks Ralph! Well said. I did like it mostly, but I like you left at the first farewell. It’s nice that they kept going and made two more albums. I’ll never forget the reunion shows. What a great band! Pass the cat cookies and blue cool aide... and schmackamagob!
In terms of Paul, he does admit in his book that he's very judgmental. (Understatement). And I hated the foreboding music in the A&E documentary that accompanied the 1979 Tom Snyder appearance discussion. Also, IIRC, Paul didn't even mention the Tom Snyder appearance in his book.
Fan since 75... they left out Crazy Nights and no mention of Paul Stanley's solo club tour 88-89. I mean, thats an important era because thats what lead to Eric Singer becoming the drummer after Eric Carr RIP. I also enjoyed seeing the 79 footage from Savanah Georgia, I'd never seen that before.
Alot of good info in this I agree. One thing I noticed about the time line. I thought Paul got his ear fixed in elder era. Hence the headband he wears in the live performance of the oath. In the book he said that's why he wore that head band he had just had surgery. But in the documentary they out the surgery in creatures era. I agree with alot of what you said.
Yo doctor, watching part 1 ,I know what you are saying about the Kiss alive back cover, always had a crush on them chicks when I was a kid, weird seeing them moving ! My first concert was at MSG in 1976 at 10 years old. You rock doctor !! Shmakamagob !!
I don’t know why Gene and Paul did not want to pay Ace and Peter what they were asking for, they would’ve still raked in the bucks, they sold stadiums out with Peter and Ace the original four !!
I think the lower pay was an offshoot of wanting to exert control; setting things up so Gene and Paul were the company and Ace and Peter were employees.
@@kudukilla I agree. I think it goes much deeper than just being about money. I think Gene, and especially Paul, look at Ace and Peter as being beneath them in every way and giving them equal anything isn't going to happen. Ace and Peter are peasants in Gene and Paul's mind.
@@giraffesareselfish9563 agreed ... But Gene and Paul .. don’t bring in the fans it’s all four of the originals that bring them in just because of that they should get what there asking for !! Don’t be so greedy Gene and Paul... or sooo prideful!!
Gene and Paul totally owe their musical careers to three people: Ace Frehley, Peter Criss, and Vinnie Vincent that is the truth, since Gene and Paul continue making money and living from the performing skills and songwriting achievements of these three people. Just think, it wasn't unimaginable the Kiss career without Creatures, Lick it Up, and those 5 early albums and who made those records, Ace, Peter, and Vinnie Vincent.
There are 'bootlegs' out there of the actual soundboard recordings of the KISS Alive 1 shows. They were briefly heard on a Kiss documentary in the late 90s. The mix was garbage and the songs severely garbled, yet an absolute live recording. There is NO doubt, KISS Alive 1 was completely re-engineered in the studio. Sean Delaney, Bill Aucoin and the original KISS road crew were criminally left out of the A and E special. As was the omission of 'Jesse Hilsen', Paul Stanley's psychiatrist, who became their manager from roughly '88 to '92. A weaselly dead-beat Dad, whom practiced Psychiatry for almost 20 years before Paul Stanley convinced Gene to make the douche-bag their manager. Hilsen absconded from KISS with almost $2 million dollars. Take note the A and E biography essentially left-off at the 'hazy' time some years before the EOTR tour. They largely omitted Psycho Circus, Sonic Boom and Monster. That says KISS decided to be 'done' with their 'original band enterprise philosophy' at that time. The EOTR tour is their retirement fund.
Kudos Ralph, your comments and observations are on point and right down the middle. As an older fan like yourself (KISS Army 1976) we’ve heard a LOT of what was told. We know the KISStory, because we’ve been there for almost 50 years. My biggest “BULLSHIT” moment was when Gene was commenting on Ace wanting to leave and do a solo album after “KMTP”, and falling back on the tired old party line: you want to do a solo album, go ahead, we’ll all do a solo album. As if it was a sincere olive branch when it is common knowledge confirmed by Bill Aucoin, Ace, Gary Corbett and others, that when KISS renegotiated their contract back in ‘76, there was a provision for them to do 4 solo albums to count as one KISS album. Enough already🙄. Thanks for the honest review my man🤟
This video is Great ! Now that I know you've done documentaries Ill be watching them soon. I love the fact that you see through bullshit and say things openly. Ive been a fan of KISS since 1975, but I won't hesitate to say what I think about the b.s. those guys put out there.
Ever since the beginning of KISS they had to make the group look good regardless of how some members were not getting their way. Before the Internet, the only way to get information about them was through magazines but you would rarely hear about disagreement within the band it was made to look like all for one and one for all, otherwise the records wouldn't sell. It's only until now we are hearing what they are really like when it comes to the band and I still say they should have ended it back in 2001 when the tour was finished.
Welp, it's official, the new Kiss Documentary will have few to little of Ace and Peter story because of disagreements between the 4. Yeah... Still hyped to see it.
I'm pretty sure it was the VH-1 Beyond the make-up documentary when Ace said he heard the Elder and threw the CD against the wall. But you know Ace lol I'm pretty sure he meant tape.
I give the documentary two out of four. I find it hard to believe that they askef people from all over the world to send footage in and that's the best they got. I was expecting a lot more unseen shit. They also glossed over the non makeup years quickly
I love ACEs work on the elder too. And especially “Under the rose”. But for some reason...maybe because I was so bummed to learn of it....I recall hearing or reading it wasn’t ACE on that solo. I’d love to be corrected if I am wrong. Anyone?
Thanks for the unfiltered rundown of the schlockumentary. An outside third-party would have been better at documenting their story. All four original members are the biggest losers this time around, since they still can't bury the hatchet. It was about egos and fleecing the sheep. It hasn't been KISS since: a) Side IV of Alive II b) Solo albums under the KISS banner (Ace should have left and it should have been repackaged as Frehley's Comet debut) c) That movie that was so great, voice actor Michael Bell dubbed Peter's voice d) Paul went to Studio 54...and the rest was infamy. The cracks were there from day one, but KISS was an unstoppable force in 1976-77.

Paul and Gene always said in the 80s that the makeup never wrote a song and wasn't really important to the band. Funny how in 95 when the band was at a low point they reunited and have never went back to being a non-makeup group. I would have definitely respected them more if after 2000 "Farewell" tour they reunited with Bruce or even had Tommy and did their own thing just like the 80s. I stopped following the band after 2000 because it became just a money maker for those two. They don't give a shit about no one but themselves.

Gene was his arrogant self, Paul and Vinnie both were stuck up like a wad of bubble gum on the ceiling. Eric, however, stopped and talked to me for like 15 minutes before he had to go and get ready. He had no airs about him and was very sweet and really did care about the fans.
When he said his flaw was his ear, I was like what 🤣🤣 He really couldn’t admit any other flaws lol. The Tom Snyder interview is wonderful. They should’ve put the plumber part in the documentary.
That part was at least in the video package when they got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
No Ace or Peter I’ll pass
There were a lot of sound bites by them from various interviews over the years. They just didn't do any new ones.
@@ASTRUM502 what other members would they use? The only 2 left would be Vinnie and Bruce, so you would have a drummer and 3 lead guitarists.
@@ASTRUM502 can you imagine Ace, Vinnie, and Peter trying to work together? Oh the drama.
@@anthonyx9481 I agree with you that part 1 was rushed. They should have taken the time to talk about Love Gun, Rock And Roll Over, and Alive 2.
@@demetriosk6536
Agreed! Demetrios when you get the chance check out my book on Amazon/Barnes & Noble, "Kiss My Black Ass!"
It's about my life growing up in the 70's and 80's as a Kiss Fan. A lot of fun and entertaining Kiss stories and great reviews!
Be cool!
@@TheJohnnyCotts I agree 👍👍👍
Thanks for taking your time to make this so quickly it was very interesting to hear your thoughts.
Exactly
I haven't seen the documentary yet, but I have whole Tom Snyder interview. Ace is hilarious. They didn't put the whole thing on Kissology. I have it. Ha! Dr. Fukk, your reviews rule. The fukkin' Paul Shtanley of Kithss is fukking killer. Next up is your review of Stormtroopers of Death, speak English of fukking die!! Can't wait.....

I loved that Ankh makeup, wish they made new characters for Tommy and Eric.

If they would have given Eric and Tommy their own makeup they would have a twenty year legacy by now, what a shame!
or just sheadded the make up with eric and tommy and it would be fine
exactly
They probably would not have sold as many tickets but at least it would've been genuine. Paul speaks of the new characters of Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent as disingenuous. How doesn't he realize that dressing up Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer as Peter and Ace is even more disingenuous??
Loved the honesty and fairness in this review. Subscribed.
I loved seeing them in the 70s without makeup like ace stuffing his face with beans by the pool in frisco waiting for the next tour
What's up Doc? Beo you have the best insight of anyone on KISS. I agree with 100% of your views. You are the best KISS Kommentator in this Galaxy. Thank you for your work. I would love to meet you one day. In the KISS world, you are the Doc that really matters to me. Rock on Brother. And I am proud of your KISS documentary: it kicks ass. 🤘🤜🤛✊ Much love from West Texas.
Ace and Peter should do their own A&E documentary just to get their side of the story I think that would be cool
Yes and more people would watch it or listen to it cause they have their own situations on paul and gene
@@kimberlypotts516 I would definitely watch it. No way I'm watching this Kiss documentary
They have more respect by staying outside of the bubble. I think we like people who aren't too thirsty.
WHAT I WROTE TO PAUL STANLEY:
I can't believe you said that Ace and Peter didn't deserve the same amount of money that you and Gene got on the Psycho Circus and Fare Well tour!
Very well said!

Watching it with subtitles, some bits were odd, like when Ace left the last time, there was something in the subs like "He would hide drugs in the wristbands of his outfit", but the line was never spoken, or edited out.
Funny how Paul Stanley doesn’t mention how. His voice sucks now. You rock Ralph
@Abe Froman like cracking jokes and doing funny pranks that is lighten up nit act like stuffy people that paul and gene are so it is a business not your to enjoy your work that is what Ace did or Peter than less about the money okay

Great breakdown of the A&E show. I personally feel your Larger Than Life vids are the best, as I have watched them repeatedly.

I was surprised there was no mention of the RnR Hall of Fame debacle in the documentary.
@@ASTRUM502 they did a Lil bit
Paul had an addiction and kind of admits it - touring. It took a toll on Peter and Ace, and it even took a toll on Gene, but Paul makes it sound like Gene was always away acting and contributed nothing in the 80s. They needed breaks from the tour and each other, but he was so driven to get back out there on the stage, he pretty much drove KISS into the ground multiple times.
Gene also is going to miss touring when it ends.
Not picking on him, but there’s a lot about Paul he didn’t mention about himself. Nobody was perfect in KISS.
You meant Eddie Kramer not Ezrin talking about Alive! Whoops! No biggie - thanks for your channel I appreciate it!
Keep it honest, Ralph! That's how you got all your followers in the first place. Shmackamagob, Brutha!

Out of all the KISS docs we’ve all seen, this is probably the best. The rare footage put this over the top.

I hated when Paul said it would be disingenuous to create new characters so he gave Eric and Tommy the Catman and Spaceman makeup. Like that's not disingenuous?
His point was the new characters created confusion for the fans. I also dont care for seeing Tommy Thayer in the spaceman makeup but it is what it is.
plus they did both. THAT is disingenuous.
Gene was once asked why they did that, and his response was "This (Demon, Starchild, Spaceman, Catman) is the only way it works."
I didn't know that Kiss wrote Rock and Roll All Night.
Are you serious?
You’ve got to be kidding, I hope you are!
Well, now you know. 😂
Is this sarcasm or are you serious?
I sure hope this isn't a serious question. Even people who aren't fans of KISS know that KISS wrote this song
I just realized that they will probably do a documentary on this documentary….
It does not matter how much wealth and success Paul Stanley has achieved, he is still the same deeply insecure person inside!

Such a great review, man. I love how you every now and then you side with each member, depending on the situation.
Notice they played a lot of stock music especially when they covered the 80s. I guess they didn't want to pay Vinnie Vincent rolayties?
i didn't understand that at all. stock music for a rock documentary? wtf
Beth also had a sound a like.
Maybe it’s not about the money and instead about not knowing who to make the check out to?
@Daniel Strickland they played music that sounded like Kiss but wasn't them. For example there was a sound in the background that sounded like I love it Loud but slightly different
@Daniel Strickland if they had played the actual songs VV would get songwriting royalties for anything he could wrote
The one thing that only die hards noticed is that on the doc 2 there was a 5 sec footage for an unreleased video of "I" from the Elder , I hope the full video will be released
it was.th-cam.com/video/YJfzDDz_lKw/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the run-down. I don't have cable so I was wondering what this doc was about.
U ARE A HOTTIE! 💥
Coming back to this a year later makes me realize we need a post-rock doc breakdown from you every time...if possible 🤘

Dr.Fukk keeping it real!
Because they are Gene and Paul
And don’t forget Eric Carr as well ~Krash
You’re forgetting that Gene made another movie during the Asylum era. Never Too Young To Die.
Also a real stinker called Trick or Treat, and Wanted Dead or Alive with Rutger Hauer.
The latter is great.
What happened to your doc you put together? I've been dying to watch it again forever but cannot find it!
Cool, video, doc. You are a die hard fan for sure. I adore your "Larger than Life" work. Interesting and strong comments.
Amazing review, you're always spot on. I haven't watched the doc yet but looking forward to it... nice work. uk fan.
Thanks for the honest review my man🤟
I Thought the Kiss documentary on A and E was great, I really loved it and was really entertained by it.
This video is Great ! Now that I know you've done documentaries Ill be watching them soon.
I love the fact that you see through bullshit and say things openly. Ive been a fan of KISS since 1975, but I won't hesitate to say what I think about the b.s. those guys put out there.
That thumbnail picture of KISS is my favorite era....visually and musically.
Thank you for your opinion on the Kisstory. You rock!!🎤🎸🎵🥁
Your Doc is what it is . Be proud of it it because it was your first one. It helps you know what not to do on your next one.

Hey Ralph I think Paul plays the solo on Under the Rose.
No. Its totally Ace
Yeah, Iliked it! Great photos! Good history review. Basically, it's as true as you can get to the story. Good for a noob.

Anyone?
I never learn anything watching KISS documentaries. I know this stuff very well.
Thanks for the unfiltered rundown of the schlockumentary. An outside third-party would have been better at documenting their story. All four original members are the biggest losers this time around, since they still can't bury the hatchet. It was about egos and fleecing the sheep. It hasn't been KISS since:
a) Side IV of Alive II
b) Solo albums under the KISS banner (Ace should have left and it should have been repackaged as Frehley's Comet debut)
c) That movie that was so great, voice actor Michael Bell dubbed Peter's voice
d) Paul went to Studio 54...and the rest was infamy.
The cracks were there from day one, but KISS was an unstoppable force in 1976-77.
Hey bro well said about kiss you were right the burned-out in the 70s with the makeup of course in the 80s they sold a lot of music without their makeup
I even said to my wife, while watching the documentary "it wasn't the characters that were failing... IT WAS THE 2 OR 3 SHITTY ALBUMS YOU PUT OUT PAUL!!!" ... Actually I was talking at the TV...but my wife was in. the room... hahahaha

I really loved your Larger than Life documentary but where's part 3??
Spot on comment about Gene and Paul's "friendship", which was emphasized over and over in the doc. Purely business partners, and that's all.
I was glad to see some footage of their early stuff. That's why I watched it. And now their is more on TH-cam.
Bob Ezrin had nothing to do with Alive. That was Eddie Kramer.
You are now the 5th person to say this now. Watch the screen when I say that.
