The Warriors that year weren't too bad, they just weren't as good as the Celtics.. HOWEVER.. they DID take Boston to 7 games! The Warriors were basically young prime Wilt and an old Arizin who could still play well, with decent role players around them. Tom Gola, Tom Meschery, and Guy Rodgers were all decent. Rodgers was not a great scorer but a nice playmaker, and Gola sucked in the playoffs I'm not sure why. He might've gotten hurt though as he didn't play in every game. They got help from Meschery who played way better in the playoffs. Wilt and Arizin were excellent as always in playoff scoring. Still they couldn't beat Boston... but it was no cakewalk... It actually came down to game 7 of the finals!!

Wilt Chamberlain's quintuple-double game Wilt Chamberlain, on March 18th, 1968, completed the only quintuple-double in NBA history. ... Pollack recorded that Wilt finished the game with 53 Points, 32 Rebounds, 14 Assists, 24 Blocks, And 11 Steals. Enjoy thinking about THAT!!!
His greatest weakness was he wasn’t mean enough. If he cracked a few heads at the beginning of his career NOBODY would have ever messed with him. He definitely went out of his way to avoid confrontations possibly out of fear that he might kill someone if he really lost his temper.
He was too strong. He could lift Arnold off the ground with one hand and did lift 2 players at once. He dislocated someone's shoulder with one of his blocks. He backed off to not hurt people but he scared some of the players to death because of how strong he was. He could have killed them. Muhammed Ali didn't want to box him because he was too strong and Arnold considered him the strongest person he had ever met.

Bruh, his mom probably made a cheat code to increase every freakin stat of wilt. No jokes, Wilt is pretty underrated tbh, many people don't even include him in their top 5
Potato #1 he is tho, for a player at his size, strongest player in nba history (he could bench more than Shaq when he was 49), could skyhook from the three point line, 50 ppg in a season, highest fg % of all time in a season, most points scored in a season, most points scored in a game, most rebounds in a game, most rebounds in a season, most blocks in a game, most blocks in a season, highest vertical in nba history + when Michael Jordan says wilt is the greatest to play the game you just know he is (even Joel Embiid and Lebron James says he would dominate today) and he ain’t even on most people’s top 3
He actually could shoot deep shots, he was a bad free throw shooter because he was too strong. Not because his hands were too big like shaqs. He would make half courters at about 30%
@@jokerofmorocco if you watched him you would know that’s false he took deep shots and because he had such big arms and was so big it looked like he didn’t take deep shots but he shot from 3 point range plenty and scored there plenty
As a St.Louis Hawks fan, I watched from the stands twice as Wilt played against the Hawks, and each time saw him triple-teamed and fouled like crazy. He never complained, but I thought, "My God, look what they're doing to him!" Now I know he probably didn't even feel the fouls!
@@jimmace6148 wilt played with Paul Arizin, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, Gail Goodrich, Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Pat Reily, all hall famers. Thats seven hall famers!
My favorite Wilt stats are 1. because of overtime, he averaged OVER 48 minutes per game, and 2. He never fouled out of a game. Other stats like averaging 50 points for a season or leading the league in points, rebounds, and assists (and probably blocks, too, if they had kept track of it) IN THE SAME SEASON are still unique, but playing almost every minute of every game is just insane.
Never fouling out of a game in his entire career. How do you do that. Averaging 50+ pts a season, playing 48 minutes a game for the entire season. 55 rbs against Bill Russell, PHENOM.
I get chills thinking of him playing modern basketball... He'd be so damn open and no one is really physical anymore on the block... He'd own his space like he did then no problem at all with 100% certainty... The physicality of the center position has been lost for a very long time Shaq was the last of that breed
players are more physical today than back when wilt played. watch some film of him in the low post, you couldn't bump your defender like you can now on post ups
Wilt was so good it's hard to adequately individualize his accomplishments because his game was so complete. In '61/'62 season he averaged 50.4 pts a game while playing in 80 games !! This guy was a FREAK !!!
per 75 possessions wilt averaged 28.7 points a game. he would still be a good scorer in today's game but not the anomaly, one of a kind type output we think of. quite a few players are outscoring him this season, adjusting for era and pace discrepancies
I remember watching Conan. There is a shot where Arnold and Wilt are lifting a stone door side by side. Arnold looked like a little kid next to Wilt. After his basketball career he played pro volleyball. His physic and muscle tone was unreal. Wilt was way ahead of anyone during that era and would still be today.
The strongest player The best shot blocker The best rebounder The best scorer The best big man passer The best conditioned player The most women slept with :) It's hard to argue against Wilt being the Greatest.
He never tried being the best, he just gave everything he had in basketball and sports. It just happened that his incredible work ethic(He would spend 90% of the day playing ball) ended up making him a hall of famer, and the best player ever so guys, as long as you have good genes and a good work ethic you can make it:)

This dude was an actual genius. Even eccentric like the rest of them. The type of guy who's good at everything but moves on to other things for the fun of it
I see a lot of haters in here....Wilt was 7'1" and had a 41" vertical or more. Plus he was the strongest player to ever play. 1 on 1 I dont think anybody can mess with a PRIME Wilt Chamberlain.
Today Damian Lillard scored 61 points in a game, the third time he's done that this year.. only one other player has scored 60 or more points more than Dame in a season..Wilt.
You are the only person that calmly and accurately explained a very complex man whoose life was much more complex and bountiful than basketball alone. He was an intelligent man who believed that winning could exact too great a cost-injuring and destroying another player’s career. He did not want to hurt others. I was ucky to observec both Chamberlain and Russel in their heyday. i grew up in Philadelphia and went to college ( and med school in Boston . Then why does he only lead a _single all-time statistical category_ if that's the case? Meanwhile, the ACTUAL greatest center of all-time, Kareem, leads _four_ of them and is in the top-5 in seven.
@@mj23goat3 playing style, body wise and athleticism wise he would be a Giannis today. And that guy would dominate every era, so just based of that Wilt would dominate every era of the nba
@@bennynagon9322 And yet you failed to dispute the statistics I showed. Wilt holds all kinds of records...in his era. Single game & single season records only show us that he was facing weak sauce comp during the time he played. All-time records show just that; how good a guy would be against ALL TIMES (aka, eras) and Wilt is only leading one puny category all-time so no, he wouldn't dominate all eras. Kareem, the _real_ greatest center ever, would definitely dominate though.
Wilt didnt get angry much but when he did, leave him alone. After kareem blocked his post fade he proceeded to block his skybook twice in a row. A new reporter said he can't score, he dropped 65 points next game A article said russel was a better rebounder, he dropped 55 rebounds on bill russel that NEXT WEEK

Its amazing how in Football you have Brady, Baseball you have the Babe, Basketball you have Wilt, and in Hockey you have Gretzky. Each of them have stats that are just way out there....especially Wilt and Gretzky. no one close!
I totally agree with you mate but not all of us share the same logic as for who is the GOAT. But for me if being the GOAT is all about winning then Bill Russell is the GOAT, If it was for the individual achievement then I'd say Wilt or if it was both then MJ.
@@kentedward9656 Well, with that logic, then Tom Heinson, Bob Cousy and Satch Sanders would also be the GOAT because they played for that same team, scored more than Russell, stole more than Russell and had more assists than Russell. Russell was a great player on a great team. Chamberlain was a great player on pretty good teams. Teams that included several Hall of Famers and MVP's As for the "weakness" of the NBA in certain eras; the closest I've seen to a 70's team would be the "Bad Boys" of Detroit. Now imagine them as every other team in the league including the ABA. In the 70's you didn't have the TV coverage you have now. The NBA was thisclose to going out at one point.
Finally, a good all round summary about Wilt. Could've included something about his insane strength but that probably wouldn't have suited the theme. Well done!
Wilt was the best ever. When you average 28 rebounds, and 50 points a game for a whole year, then score 100 points a game, no one will ever do that again He dwarfs anyone else in statistics.

If he's won every shot meet and beat Jim Brown that's a combination of strength and explosiveness that's literally unmatched
Wilt Chamberlain was the most versatile NBA player ever because he can do-it-all on the court. If he played in the NBA today, he would average 60 points, 50 rebounds and 15 assists per game. He’s very physical and very skilled as a player.
Bill Russell also was a track star. The 7th best high jumper in the world. He ran the 440 yard dash in 49.6 seconds. Chamberlain is rumored to have run the same distance in 49 seconds as a PRETEEN.
People say Wilt _only_ won two championships without considering two things. The first is that he won two championships with two totally different teams in two separate decades. That's quite a feat on its own, and he carried both of those teams. The second is context. He played 7 series against Bill Russell and a roster of future HOFers. Of those 7 series, 4 went to game seven. Those 4 games were decided by a grand total of _NINE_ points. And those losses were not Wilt's fault. One game saw his team not pass to him for the entire second half. He touched the ball twice in that second half. In another game, he went out with an injury and the coach wouldn't put him back in. The coach was fired the next season for not putting in their best player at the end of game seven of the finals. In another, Wilt scored his team's final five points, including the shot to tie. Sam Jones threw up a deep shot and won. And the other game seven loss was Havlichek's famous steal, throw by a teammate to another teammate; Wilt was not given the ball. You cannot continue to blame him for these losses. If anything, he's the reason those games were so close to begin with.Wilt Chamberlain is the greatest basketball player of all time, and the argument against that is he only won two championships? That's absurd. Some guys never won any.
But anybody who has not won any is even up for a debate for GOAT? Nobody is denying his athleticism or his physical dominance. He just is not GOAT because of his mentality towards winning- he only won two championships for that. I feel like if he really wanted to, with that atheleticism, his character and a different mentality- getting everyone involved in winning, building up a system for the team to win, working back-to-back with the scouters to get a team that can beat Bill Russell, then he could have been GOAT.
In the Havlicek steal Game if you look the final minutes (the game is available in youtube) Wilt scored at less the final 8 points and he stole the ball to Bill Russell!!! Before Havlicek steal. Go and watch that final minutes and you'll see, how Wilt scored the final points to put his team only 1 point behind Boston, then he stole the ball to Bill Russell, and then one of his teammates lost the Ball to Havlicek.
Bill Russell had multiple HOF players in his team, including former MVP Bob Cousy. On the other hand, Wilt had almost no help in his prime with the Warriors. Imagine the Cavs after Warriors got Durant; no matter how good LeBron was, he couldn't outscore perhaps the three best shooters of all time. Wilt was in a similar situation, but with worse help. Wilt would have had more than his 4 mvps as well, if MVPs were given before playoffs. In fact, Bill Russell got the MVP the season Wilt averaged 50.4 ppg. If Finals MVP was a thing, Wilt would have had thr most MVPs of all time, and Bill Russell would have had like 11 finals MVPs but 0 regular season MVPs.
without russell those mfs couldn't win shit, with him they won 11 chips and had the best defense 12/13 years. russell won MVPs from mostly his defense whereas wilt played hero ball and his team always had a below average offense until he scored less.
@@11DowningStreet I'm not denying the fact that Bill Russell was the main man in the Celtics Team. I'm just saying that he had a better supporting cast than Wilt. The Celtics record before drafting Bill Russell was 39-33, in comparison to Warrior's 32-40 record before Wilt. And the increase in offense argument isn't even valid as the offense improved not because he scored less, but because he changed teams. The teams he moved on to after the Warriors were simply better than the Warriors teams Wilt played for. And if you want to make the point for the sixers being better than the warriors were when Wilt's ppg in sixers was lower than it was for the warriors, he was the primary playmaker too, with a hall of fame coach unlike his warriors days

It’s so insane that Wilt and Bill averaged 25-30 rebounds a game.. that would be a career night these days but these men went out and did it game after game. Would’ve loved to have seen them play in today’s game.

I went to Boston Garden about a dozen times to watch Wilt, from 1966 to '69. Two of many memories; During pregame warm-ups Wilt would hit 75 to 80% of set shots from 30 to 35 ft. No joke, after a few times I would keep track during the warm ups. Also, during introductions, he got a bigger ovation than any Celtic except Russell. This included guys like Sam Jones and John Havlicek. ( Of course, once the game started........
I appreciate Wilt's honesty when he said that Russell was a better player for the Celtics team concept. Averaging 50 per game (and over 48 min per game) are records that will likely never be approached. When is the last time someone averaged 40, let alone 50?
"When is the last time someone averaged 40, let alone 50?" Probably right around the last time the league was filled with slow white offseason milkmen. Ya' know, like it was when Wilt played.

@@idk-yk3xo Show me your source. I've seen some sites saying it was 6'5" and others saying it was 6'6". But let's say it was 6'6", that still means Wilt was 7 INCHES taller than the average player. Hell, even Chamberlain's main nemesis, Russell, was three INCHES shorter than him. As was Reed. Thurmond was two inches shorter. Kareem was one of the only guys with height and ability the equal of Wilt but they didn't face off until Chamberlain was near the tail end of his career. It ain't like he was goin' toe to toe with Cap for decades on end, which is kind of my point. What we think of as the modern NBA began somewhere around 1972, just about the time Wilt was retiring, so he never went up against modern comp like Kareem (and Jordan) faced their whole careers. Wilt was playing in the ancient era. And MJ, by the way, was actually _exactly_ the average height for his era yet was still dunkin' on 7-footer chumps' heads with regularity. Just like he would've dunked on Wilt's dome all. day. long.
The real reason why Wilt Chamberlain wasn't the league's dominant scorer in the 2nd half of his career was mainly due to the influence of coach Alex Hannum. In his first 7 seasons in the league, Wilt won 7 scoring titles, but he had yet to win an NBA title. Alex Hannum was then hired as the 76ers new coach and due to his team's stacked lineup, he asked Chamberlain to be more of an all-around player. Wilt took Hannum's suggestion and ran with it as he produced maybe the most complete season by a center in NBA history. The 1966-1967 Sixers bolted out of the gate with a 46-4 record, ended the season with a then NBA record 68-13, and Chamberlain was named the league MVP with an incredible stat line of 24.1 points, 24.2 rebounds, and 7.8 assists a game. Wilt was also the most dominant defensive player in the league and he proceeded to have the greatest playoff run in NBA history. In 15 playoff games, Chamberlain averaged 21.7 points, 29.1 rebounds, 9.0 assists, and 9.2 blocked shots. Wilt won his first NBA title and proved beyond ALL doubt that he was THE most dominant player in NBA history.
Tired of people discrediting wilt. Come on the man scored 100 in a game grabbed 55 boards in a game and somehow people still find a way to hate and put down this legend because they’re not a sports fan they’re a media fan
You could look at the Russell/Wilt thing differently. You could argue that Wilt consistently pressed superior Celtics TEAMS to the brink over and over again. Wilt was so good that everything he did that fell short of perfect was counted against him. I'm starting a team, he'd definitely be my first pick.
Many of the blocks back then would be goaltending today. Just watch the films, many of Wilt's (and Bill's) blocks were shots that were on the way down and that would have been counted as 2pts today. They were both great, of course, but if you went back and charted their blocks, many of them would not be blocks.
To me, Wilt Chamberlain was probably the greatest athlete of the last 100 years. The other wasn't human (sort of my feelings on Wilt), it was a horse...Secretariat. Wilt purposely toned things down to get more enjoyment from the game and avoid hurting people. Can you imagine what the record books would have looked like if his main motivation was to leave a legacy? It's mind boggling.
There is no doubt he is the greatest player of all time who in any sport could hold 72 records that's just incredible and after 40 years being retired he held 92 NBA records I mean what the f*** it's just unbelievable
In my opinion,he is the UNDERESTIMATED 🐐 of the game. You'll always hear people saying "Jordan is the GOAT, Magic is the GOAT, LeBron is the GOAT." But,in fact, Wilt Chamberlain put up stats that neither of those could... I mean, the guy averaged over 50 points a season...
abc ez as 123 he wouldn’t get many steals because he would rather just block the shots, he would’ve had over 15 blocks per game, probably 40 ppg, over 20 rebounds per game and he had great basketball IQ so he would average at least 10 assists per game if he tried to
He was so good that he is still ahead in records by a mile in the time where offensive play was severely limited. He's not in the same league as any other player in NBA history, not Michael, not Kareem, not Lebron. Wilt Chamberlain was a few class above them as an athlete alone.
Bill Russell was the most dominant player in NBA History. 11 NBA Championships in 13 years. Bill Russell was the epitome of the player who contributed/did/accomplished whatever his team needed to win in a given situation: rebounding, blocking shots, passing, running the court for a layup, intimidating on defense, or scoring. @@zavorica No they didn't win the championship that year either. But still, even in basketball it takes a team, not just one guy

He was too strong. He could lift Arnold off the ground with one hand and did lift 2 players at once. He dislocated someone's shoulder with one of his blocks.

And if you want to make the point for the sixers being better than the warriors were when Wilt's ppg in sixers was lower than it was for the warriors, he was the primary playmaker too, with a hall of fame coach unlike his warriors days

imagine if nature had put Kobe's spirit in Wilt's body, i don't even know if i want to see that. It would be "let's see what team comes second this year" for the whole of his career.
There's no one else like him athletically at that size... Not even Shaq.
Simply the best vs. all the rest. Strange how people forget how great he really was. Best athlete of all time.
I went to Boston Garden about a dozen times to watch Wilt,
from 1966 to '69.
Two of many memories;
During pregame warm-ups Wilt would hit 75 to 80% of set
shots from 30 to 35 ft. No joke, after a few times I would
keep track during the warm ups.
Also, during introductions, he got a bigger ovation than any
Celtic except Russell. This included guys like Sam Jones and
John Havlicek. ( Of course, once the game started........
I appreciate Wilt's honesty when he said that Russell was a better player for the Celtics team concept. Averaging 50 per game (and over 48 min per game) are records that will likely never be approached. When is the last time someone averaged 40, let alone 50?
Never. The closest is MJ averaged 37ppg and harden averaging 36, but that’s it. He truly was a freak of nature
"When is the last time someone averaged 40, let alone 50?"
Probably right around the last time the league was filled with slow white offseason milkmen. Ya' know, like it was when Wilt played.
@@mj23goat3 obviously it is the mj fan boy you don't know anything about basketball if you think wilt only played plumbers and unathletic white guys the averge height when wilt was playing was 6ft7 one inch taller than today's game he faced people like bill ruseel nate Thurmond, Willie's Reed, kareem etc
@@mj23goat3 the only thing Jordan was the greatest at was selling shoes. Wilt was the greatest scorer greatest rebounder greatest shot blocker
Just like he would've dunked on Wilt's dome all. day. long.
The most dominant NBA player in history.
Shaq has a case
Take shaq and then make him significantly stronger, triple his vertical, and make him the fastest player on the court. That was Wilt.
@@darrylowens6506 No. Shaquille O'Neal couldn't come close to Wilt Chamberlain's strength.
@@alex5781 damn Shaq with a 114 inch vertical would have been insane. Don't think his knees would have held out though.
EXACTLY SMH
You could look at the Russell/Wilt thing differently. You could argue that Wilt consistently pressed superior Celtics TEAMS to the brink over and over again. Wilt was so good that everything he did that fell short of perfect was counted against him. I'm starting a team, he'd definitely be my first pick.
Could you imagine Wilt now with the advance training and nutrition. Died way to young. An amazing talent !
Many of the blocks back then would be goaltending today. Just watch the films, many of Wilt's (and Bill's) blocks were shots that were on the way down and that would have been counted as 2pts today.
They were both great, of course, but if you went back and charted their blocks, many of them would not be blocks.
Hmm, I didn't know that. I guess I haven't been paying close attention to notice.
That;'s called the RUSSELL Rule.
@@jamesmichalek5406 no it was allreddy a thing befor them
To me, Wilt Chamberlain was probably the greatest athlete of the last 100 years.
Wilt is NOT the only guy to block Kareem’s sky hook. Manute Bol also has that accomplishment
3:40 "Wilt is also the only guy to block kareems skyhook" *proceeds to only show footage where wasnt able to block it*
There is no doubt he is the greatest player of all time who in any sport could hold 72 records that's just incredible and after 40 years being retired he held 92 NBA records I mean what the f*** it's just unbelievable
In Jordan's Era. 40-43pts a game, 22-24rebs, 7assists, 6.5 blocks, 1.4 steals. Rough estimate.
abc ez as 123 he wouldn’t get many steals because he would rather just block the shots, he would’ve had over 15 blocks per game, probably 40 ppg, over 20 rebounds per game and he had great basketball IQ so he would average at least 10 assists per game if he tried to
@@blackandwhite1410 I was talking about career averages xD
abc ez as 123 still crazy haha
He was so good that he is still ahead in records by a mile in the time where offensive play was severely limited.
He's not in the same league as any other player in NBA history, not Michael, not Kareem, not Lebron. Wilt Chamberlain was a few class above them as an athlete alone.
The idea that Wilt was nerfed in any way, shape, or form and at that level is almost completely unthinkable 🤯🤯🤯
Dude dunked so hard on someone's foot that the ball broke the dude's toe
Well I don't think that dude could hide the pain
@LeBron's hairline I'm pretty sure it was the toe
LeBron's hairline my bad, I meant somebody else's toe😂😂😂
@@Bear0000 The guy's name was Johnny "Red" Kerr.
@LeBron's hairline - I think Wilt broke "Jungle" Jim Loscutoff's wrist.
Bill constantly adjusted his emphasis based upon what was required to win. The GOAT - Bill Russell.
Only 8 teams back then
GOAT in my book.
Lost three time in the finals with jerry west and Elgin baylor.
Jerry west and Elgin Baylor…..
He couldn’t come up big when it mattered. Would love to know how he’s the goat…
Wilt is the one player that would be about to dominate any era. Half of his feats would be unbelievable if not recorded.
Wilt Chamberlain has always been my favorite NBA player. Also my Mr 😎 Cool!
