*Orphanage Update:* We surpassed our goal for the money raised for the orphanage plus enough to keep it running for the foreseeable future in less than 24 hours ($80,000 USD). Orphanage building costs and materials, daily food for 50-60 children, clean drinking water, school fees etc. will now all be taken care of thanks to your overwhelming generosity and response to this campaign. Im half nigerian and my dad is full nigerian and i went there when i was about 13. We went to Lagos to a part that was a bit wealthier because there are some pretty rich parts of Lagos but also sadly very poor parts. But what i’ve learned is if someone grew up somewhere in nigeria they know that whole place like the back of their hand. Props to this guy

It really makes you think. These people seem really happy and have next to nothing and here in the US there are so many people that complain about the stupidest stuff (including myself). I really admire these people. It makes me much more grateful for what I have and puts things into perspective. Great video.
The children are happy because when you're born into a place every experience you have is built there; everything is normal. If you're a child outside playing with friend you're going to be happy anywhere. The man being interviewed is the chief's son, in comparison to those around him he is in luxury, so he will be in higher spirit. Other people smile when they see clear outsiders (white) because they're a very rare sight, especially in their neighborhood. It's like having a guest over as a kid, except the guest is a celebrity.
It's sometimes true that people in these places can often times be happier, but you should keep these things in mind for greater perspective to recognize that you're never truly seeing an unfiltered picture of life.
True. Also, if Nigeria is rich in resources, the opposite is what's seen on the ground. It still shows the image we've always known. Hopefully its government is working on it.

I live in Lagos, I was born and raised here. We all know Makoko, everyone has driven past this community at least a thousand times. This video makes me feel guilty that it took someone from another continent to show me how life goes 1 hour away from me. It’s a wake up call to help your neighbor in whatever little way you can, you really don’t need to be a millionaire to care for those who are unable to care for themselves

This looks like an amazing place with amazing people. It might be a "slum" but to some people from the West, if they chose to just go live there for a year, it would be the most character building experience of their life. I want to perhaps one day get away from this life and just go live in a place like this for a while.

I lived in Mali as an expat kid, the poverty i saw was worse than anything I’ve seen even by Indian standards. Yet, the poorest ppl I met seemed to be the happiest. There was one guy named Moussa who would give me peaches every morning for free that he sold. So on my way back from school everyday, I’d buy lunch for him. He kept a lookout for me and never let the others bother me. He was the sweetest man, Africans have hearts made of gold. The next generation will change the future for the better I’m sure!

Even if they build roads not only would it solve some of the unemployment it would increase GDP which would make the slimy bastard even richer. Instead he hides his money and ignores his citizens. One of saddest things about this is that Nigeria earns so much revenue from it’s oil exports but clearly very little of that is infested in helping it’s own citizens. Lack of public toilets, lack of decent infrastructure & massive poverty while a small percentage live lavishly whilst the vast majority languish in abject poverty. Sad 😔

I met this young man and his dad when I went to Makoko with a production team, such a warm and kind man. That visit opened my eyes to a lot of things. I still wonder how a community like this is filled with people with kind hearts. Thanks for raising money for the orphanage, you are amazing

I'm a Nigerian and living here in Nigeria is very difficult for alot of people, slums are very common but Nigerians don't give up and smile through their sufferings I lost my mum few months ago because i couldn't afford to get her to the hospital, alot of us try as much as possible to live and I'm so happy and grateful for all those who have donated to help this people.

@@naomigary7930 yes, but it's very often due to corruption as well. After gaining independence, the government often creates too many regulations or too little. I know the Western countries are not perfect and also have corruption but I feel like always blaming the problem of developing countries on Western countries often just ignores the elephant in the room, which is corruption. Nigeria ranks for example 154th in Transparency, which is unfortunately a horrible place on the list. To give it perspective: Germany ranks 12th and if I'm not mistaken the US is 18h.

Developed countries never last because they all eventually become feminist ideology infested. Essentially causing many men to check out of society. Such an interesting video, but also I thought briefly how sad it was that Ben Stiller promised to build them a school and never followed through. Celebrities/travellers go to these areas for show or just a fun day trip, but this is people’s lives. That school would cost pennies to him but it would have such a powerful impact on the community. How disappointing.
When he was explaining how he built that little space for the kids to play. It broke my heart but it filled me with so much love at the same time. This Nigerian man is an angel we are entertaining. I hope someone sees this and can help this community. Hopefully I can one day.

It’s funny how I’m a Nigerian who’s lived in Nigeria all my life and I still get fascinated by this video. Never actually seen life in the slums so this video feels like it’s about somewhere completely different.
You do realise that the slum is super tiny compared to Lagos?
You realise that there are skyscrapers & luxury homes for thousands of kilometers in Lagos but he only chose to show you the tiny slums???
You do realise that the wealthiest black people on earth are Nigerians but he chose to avoid all the luxury but instead chose to show you where illegal immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers live an off-grid slum life???
Unfortunately, most of them who live in the tiny slum started off as refugees, illegal immigrants and asylum seekers living off-grid. The Nigerian government cannot be responsible for their wellbeing and welfare because they are stateless people.
Secondly, poverty can never be eradicated on earth. This reminds me of all the poor homeless people i saw in streets of America. There were many people who had no clean water, food, heating, electricity & healthcare? Sadly, poverty is everywhere... It's the same here in the UK as well.

This couple from Australia had a y/t channel I use to follow then found out the lady was daughter of head honcho, govern type , her momma a lawyer..anyways the dad keeps most of the funds apparently that he's suppose to use for the buildup of their city,.this couple is very well off, like huge home behind gates, two chefs, maids..I couldn't believe it and they act like high almighty cause lots of money..just awful..It does happen elsewhere too though, especially on Native reservations in Canada, the band office employees and chiefs gain all the funds which are suppose build up for the housing and such in the communities,.it's maddening..

Kinda hoping the guy that showed you around started a daily vlog type of thing of life in the slums. He has a great personality/soul and I think he can really take off with it and Create change, not only in his life but the whole community. It would give people a more in depth look on how their surviving every day and hopefully get more people to understand the sharp contrast of how people are living outside of their own little bubble. He could get his PA to organise a charity dinner , tickets sold to Uber wealthy people including his A lister friends . It could easily be sponsored , with raffle tickets , an auction and open donations . Btw , not to be rude but it was a school Ben Stiller said he’d build .

This little community on the water is pretty positive it seems.
I like their system if someone commits a crime to expose them to the community and then make them leave.
If their is a fight then they make them make up and make peace with each other.
I hope they get the orphanage built an the children get education, food to eat, and a nice place to sleep. That way they won’t have to keep moving around sleeping and eating where and when ever they get the opportunity to.

I can relate so much with this feeling. I've lived too in cities with very big inequality gaps and it is surreal to think about how in a less than 100 km radius someone in the same city would be living in wildly different circumstances in a slum. And while yes, I want everyone to see the nicer side of the places I love, it is so important too to shed light into the problems and show them as they are, with shades of beauty, sadness, joy and more.

What amazes me is that irrespective of these people living in extreme poverty and poor conditions, their ethics and sense of community is astounding. My experience in a developed nation is 'Everyone for themselves'
I was just thinking that. Amazing sense of community there, whereas in developed countries if you strayed onto someones overgrown, unused field you'll be shouted at or sued.
Don't get me wrong, I love my country and I'm thankful that I was born in a developed nation, but I feel there's an inherent downside that comes with it in the form of huge social repercussions. My relationship with my neighbours starts and ends with me saying hello to them in the morning, and there's no way I could rely on any of them for help.
I asked my neighbours if they would file a police statement for me after they had witnessed someone scrape up against my car. Unfortunately I never saw it so I couldn't say who it was, although two of my neighbours saw it and told me they knew who was driving the other car. They said they would, so I called the police about it and told them my neighbours saw it - Police returned after a few minutes of talking to them with the bad news that they allegedly never saw anything. Very common behaviour here because no one wants to give a few hours to a courtroom for someone else, although the story would be different if it was them or their family that needed it.
Good people make good leaders. Good leaders make good communities. No one trusts each other in the west these days, so everyone hides. I would blame the media, but even that is too simple. It's all of us. The whole thing is rotten from the governments down.
That’s because in a developed country you simply don’t rely on people. Though I wouldn’t consider their ethics necessarily above ours. I would say the conditions make it so hard.

I was in Makoko yesterday and I saw this first hand. The life there is entirely intriguing, conversing with Sunday and his brother and seeing what they are doing to improve lives on sea is mind-blowing. Sunday sent me here and I must say thank you for telling this story. Lagos is so small yet so large and diverse. Visit Makoko if you can and I tell you it's something you would not forget so soon...

I've been all around the world, lived in Germany, Australia, Japan, and China. But seeing people in this place, the smile on people's faces, it just makes me wonder what actually brings happiness to people.
Here In Nigeria, most of us just live our lives everyday like that day in gonna be the last and try to make the best of it..... No matter how devastating a situation is, an average Nigerian will find a reason out of it to still smile .
