☠️ *Out of this world beauty mixed with the darkness.* That sums up Rio de Janeiro for me. I saw some things on this day that won’t be forgotten easily and please note that a LOT happened off camera, I cannot share certain details of this day because it wouldn't be fair and potentially risky to the kind people that helped me out on this day and made this surreal experience possible. Please let me know your thoughts in a comment section of this video and the Brazil Series (positive or negative). Want to see the photos I got from this day? See them here: instagram.com/indigo.traveller/ Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next one. I love you, Brazil! 🇧🇷
Great representation of all the opposites Rio has to offer, and it makes me slightly sad to see not much has changed since I was there. Early 2000's for me. But do enjoy the people and their spirit on your trip(s)! Keep it up and I'll be following!
These are the kind of places I want to visit; to see how life really is, instead of the touristy spots. Of course, like you said, Nick, there's certain places not to visit alone. I can't wait to see what's next 😃
For those of you who are curious about what he saw but did not mention in the end of the video, he probably witnessed police officers collaborating, interacting and making deals with criminals. Police officers will sell guns to the gangs and demand money for letting them operate, and also provide info about incoming police operations. He may have witnessed children and teenagers involved in the drug-selling scheme. The gangs will use children, pregnant, disabled and elderly people mostly to transport the drugs without causing suspicion. I can’t say it is rare that children will be seen holding a gun in a favela. Their childhood is dismantled, and it is shocking when you see a kid who is probably still interested in toys to be holding a gun instead. The unaccessible goods and lifestyle bombarded by tv and the internet nowadays is a powerful tool to convince people into the wrong paths. Other things he may have seen include their drug and money stocks or, based on his scared face, a place where bodies are disposed, but this is less likely than the other possibilities. The drug dealers will kill people caught stealing in some favelas "to serve as example". In their criminal activities, many people end up being executed, so there are usually unaccessible places where they dispose the bodies of the victims. Although he may have watched somebody being executed in front of him, I don't think this was the case. It is possible, but I think they would not do it in front of a tourist, a person they don't know at all. There is a chance he witnessed somebody being taken away by them, and was told to ignore what was going on and not to look at them. In this case, imagining what happened to that person could be the cause of his scared face. This was suggested by somebody else as a response to my comment. Many people are mentioning human trafficking, but this is not something common in the favelas of Rio. As I mentioned previously, the leaders of the gangs usually try to keep their reputation as somebody who is protecting the community. From my understanding and experience, if somebody involved with human trafficking is caught in a favela, it is not going to end well for him.

I'm from Brazil and I say to those who watched this video: don't believe in this content, there is a certain culture, especially in Rio de Janeiro, a tourist city, in romanticizing the favelas, which is terrible and only serves the tourist guide interests. Poverty has never been and will never be trivial. These videos and testimonials are all the bad guys want. A favela is not something pleasant and safe, quite the opposite.

I come from Philippines 🇵🇭, and I went to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro! I have to say: one of the most beautiful countries I have ever been to! Nothing bad happened to me luckily, but the friends I have made there were amazing, and the places I saw were absolutely breathtaking! Too bad it’s over 11,000 miles away from my country. I dated one of the locals, and I felt the love and affection so much! I felt so loved and accepted there, even more than the asians in neighboring countries in Philippines! I hope things will be safer in the future because I really love Brazil 🇧🇷 so much! Muito obrigado e boa sorte brasil!
I definitely would love to visit Brazil. I lived in the Philippines (bulacan spang palay) for 3 years, and had those same feelings about living in a province In the Philippines.
Brasil is such an amazing country. My wife is Brazilian, we went to visit her family this past January in Jundiai, SP. we also spent some time in Ubatuba. Brasil is a country that has a lot social inequality. I live in the city of São Paulo, the richest city of Latino America. There are many rich people in the country, but on the other side, there are many folks suffering with poverty and crimes, especially in the North and Northeast of the country... It's pretty sad
I met a girl from Brazil, we talked for hours and hours. A random encounter at a restaurant. Honestly the most beautiful coolest girl ever, she asked me to come back to Brazil with her and go on adventures around south america but I could not do that sadly. Really makes me wish I could have gone!! Somewhere out there I know she's there living life to the fullest💕

Thank you for taking us to Rio. Really touched me how he said that people are a product of their environment. I love this world, and the different people who inhabit it.
I'm a Brazilian I lived in the favela for a few months while my mom was between jobs. These people who say it is beautiful living them it reminds me of the Great Gatsby " these people are elusive". You pay a tax rate to the local Drug dealer. The majority of these gang soldiers are high on cocaine and uneducated as some never finished first grade. Secondly, if you have a beautiful woman as a family member one of the gang soldiers will do everything in their power to make you live miserably. You saw the goods that they ALLOWED you to see, they had a route and people they wanted you to want to see. Watch it from 19:48 is the real Brazil.
Galera, well spoken, I dont understand why people even wanna know about this sad sad conditions. There is so much stuff going on ... I have no words for it. Bjs.
@@katharinabeck1892 People want to know because we all have morbid curiosity. Same way we want him to explain the really bad things he saw at the end, but I fully understand why he won't, some extreme things in life should just be taken into account by that person's eyes and laid to rest that same minute and try not to reflect on the bad moments for too long, some can break people.
Exactly, it's like living in a mini mafia state where you have no rights, it's so naive for people to believe that criminals have some kind of "morality" and that the people that live there are safe, remember what they did to Tim Lopes when he tried to denounce the raping of underage girls in funk festivals.
I think he did a great job capturing this in a safe, balanced, and respectful way. And such a great guide. The drone would be shot out of the sky so fast.
He didn't. It's mostly lies and sensationalism. It doesn't reflect the reality of community life at all. That's probably why he didn't mention the name of the favela.
@@onator210 We can literally see the dozens of bullet holes lmao Y’all aren’t fooling anyone. I’m sure what was most shocking was seeing how the police and gangs are basically on the same team. You can underplay the danger of these places but when the police have pretty much given up and given in, that says a lot about the situation of an area.
I traveled to brazil so many times and spent so much time there and can say that You reported an accurate picture of how life and people are in Rio especially the hard working and honest Brazilians who live in the favelas and also the dangerous reality of the situation. Thanks for a great job!
This is why I got hooked in your documentary vlogs, you really showcase the ugly and the good side of a country you visit. Stay safe always Indigo Traveller

After watching the movie "City of God" always had common respect for the Ghettos of Brazil....Just like here in the USA the system allows for people of african decent to suffer then complain when they look for extreme measures to find a way out.
Agreed @@Jorginhoflu1000 but it depends how a person would define "African Decent" i myself saw no "white" people in the "City of God" movie, even in this video the host was the only white person i saw....however due to colorism i understand why a person would define/categories themselves as "white" for example Neymar Jr. He never identify as "black" or "Afro-Brazilian" but we can assume he's of "African Decent" by just knowing the history of Brazil the country and how they imported the most african slaves during the 16/17th century (4.9 million).
Your respect for the people living the favelas and showing the things you weren’t allowed to film or even touch on it in detail is what made me subscribe to your channel. Thank you for that!
The community spirit in many favelas is much more compassionate than even the richer areas. Everyone understands poverty and death in the favelas. Life is cheap but they try and live life to the fullest in spite of the conditions which provoke such misery.

I was able to visit this favela and Rochina with my boxing coach in 2007. The locals were super friendly. But don’t get it twisted, if I was alone I would’ve been in deep shit.
I spent a month in Rio in 2014. The people was so nice and welcoming I had no trouble at all. The police did try to take money from us 1 day on the beach but a local helped us. We eat bbq in a favela with locals and I think it’s the same as any other country I’m from London U.K. and there’s just as much if not more crime. Would love to visit again when my children are older.
It's crazy, every time I see a video of basically anywhere in Brazil even the favelas. I just think of how beautiful it is. it's crazy because you're in the slums but you're still captured by that beauty and you're like what is making this place so beautiful. Of course the land and nature and everything but also it's the people, the way the buildings are built and the art.. the murals. It's just all tied In that makes it so beautiful
I'm Brazilian and I'm sick of foreign people having this true obsession with favelas. Slums are places of huge crime. The fact of a lot of foreigners really believe they are colourful, peaceful and happy places, with 100% of good folks there annoys me at most. When I was in London UK years ago and was explaining to a brit that I came from a poor and working class background and this guy told, "ah, OK, I understand you, you are from the favela!" and this got me really upset. "No mate, I didn't come from a favela. I came from a working class area, not a criminal one. You would be so surprised to know the majority of Brazilians don't live in favelas and that the fact of Brazil is a very large and diverse country, we are not only, thankfully, the Rio de Janeiro city and its favelas (a place that I've visited just one time in my life and I've hated with all of my forces.)". It's really sad the world thinks Brazil is just favelas and much more terrible that you think favelas are beautiful places. This offends most part of the hard working Brazilians, believe me

This is a great example of depicting things the way they are. He is getting to know the local people and he is asking them questions regarding their life in the favelas. He is not being disrespectful or ignorant. I'm brazilian and I just saw a favela twice in my life (I'm 19), when I went to Curitiba and Porto Alegre, I passed through. Even though I don't consider myself a rich person, I always lived in suburban areas in minor cities in the South, but in actual houses, and just recently moved to an apartment. When I was younger it was worse, but my life improved a lot in my late teenage, mainly due to my mother
Love that you have enough empathy and awareness to not run out a list of all the negative things you saw. It shows that you do this because you care and not solely for shock value clicks. Keep up the great work.
Brazil is my favorite countries to visit. With being African-American and growing up in the inner city a lot of things he discusses I have seen first hand in the states, so when I go to Brazil and the favelas I understand it totally. Have and have nots, seperation of rich and poor, those that have access those that do not, those that have resources those that do not. Brazil has the most of amount of African Descendants outside of Africa (60 million black folks) The favelas is real living, real struggle, and in a lot of cases real happiness. I will be going back in April. Oh and another thing I experienced more racism in Brazil (Ipanema), than I have experienced in the states. Brazil is definitely also a color class system with more institutional racism. It's a beautiful place scenery wise, but you do feel an element of danger or tenseness when you are there. Parks and areas that should be beautiful and manicured have been overgrown, you can tell that government in some ways have mis-managed funds and there is quite a bit of corruption. It's a very conflicted place, but a very beautiful one. Brazil (Rio) doesn't hide its beauty but it also doesn't hide its flaws.. I will end this by saying I love Brazil, and the reason why I give back financially to the Rochina Favelas passing energy to those that need it and want it. Positive Energy and Love to whom ever is reading this.

As a brazilian who lived most of his life in Rio, I must say that Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinho, the favelas that you have visited, are not even considered dangerous from the cariocas. Not kidding. Jacarezinho, Manginhos, Complexo do Alemão, Mangueira, Cidade de Deus (City of God) and Rocinha are the worst.
Im also from New Zealand I was an exchange student but was hosted in São Paulo we went to the favela in Easter as part of our exchange chapter to deliver Easter eggs and gifts to the less fortunate. We had to be guided in the same manner as you the amount of security checks etc. . The things we saw and encountered let's just say it was an experience on its own and very scary at first but I can understand where they are coming from and let's just say I am and will be forever grateful for the life I have. And Brazil is a beautiful country with wonderful people, music and culture and the food is tops👌
You've so much more to feel on your journey around some of this country, you've been touched, blessed on your arrival .. When it's bad in Brasil it's BAD , but when it's good it's uma Maravilha
I haven't had the fortune to travel to Brazil yet, but a friend of mine has been there for an exchange year. She used to live in a kinda wealthy place, but when she visited favela she was shocked and cried after seeing how good the people in there were, despite all the poverty they are going trough.
You have to remember that Brazil is a really large and multicultural country. No place is like each other: you have different cultures, different climates, different places, etc. I really recommend you to go to the south region (Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul)
Just a friendly tip, DONT go to Rio de Janeiro, South is beautiful, NorthEast too! Rio for now is a narcostate. Think About it or just do some research in south and southeast! :)
Can't ever understand why the hell any tourist or student would ever go there. Do they think of it as a safari or something? I was born in Brazil and never set a foot into a favela, and don't want to. Why would I?
Now you can understand the difference between the poor ones and the rich ones by taking a close look at the comments below. The people from the southern parts of Brazil think they are something else, however they are just a bunch of wannabe european.

Great representation of all the opposites Rio has to offer, and it makes me slightly sad to see not much has changed since I was there. Early 2000's for me.

Secondly, if you have a beautiful woman as a family member one of the gang soldiers will do everything in their power to make you live miserably. Esse aí tem que escutar facção central
This offends most part of the hard working Brazilians, believe me
@@Ignatius1972 stop, please stop!!! Stop spitting so many facts!
"Scary", "fascinating", "charming". You summed this up very nicely.
Im from Brasil thanks for visiting my country
This is a great example of depicting things the way they are. He is getting to know the local people and he is asking them questions regarding their life in the favelas. He is not being disrespectful or ignorant. Even though the idea of a favela is very scary that doesn’t mean that there aren’t good people living there- people who wish they could escape this way of life and have a better future. We don’t realize how lucky we are sometimes.
Much love from Israel to Brazil 🇧🇷❤️❤️
Ive been 3 times in Rio and another 6 in other cities and I love Brazil
Ive been to Rio last February this year for 2 weeks and went for a solo trip. Ive decided to travel alone and celebrate my birthday (Feb. 14) in Copacabana. I must say that I was inlove with the people, culture and history, food and the camaraderie. I must say I left my heart in Brazil and surely will comeback this February 2024 :) I work here in Qatar and I really supported Brazil throughout their match in Fifa Worldcup, Parabens BRAZIL ❤❤❤
Thanks. I tell you one thing, don't trust the ROMANTICIZATION of this video about the favela (I'm Brazilian and I know what I'm saying)
It's completely clear at the end he was talking about the police involved in crime. But it's not a surprise. There are good cops in the same proportion as bad ones
Nothing new there. There's no way drugs from different countries in Central and South America get into the favelas through states and cities without some bribery
Nada disso, os polícias ruins são minoria
You know that is lie man, the fuck?? the whole corporation of militar police is completaly filfhy. Let's just say all they do is get corruption money and kill black people
Hi Jason, that is not what I was referring to at all. Something completely different actually. Thanks for watching!
@@IndigoTraveller I'm puzzled then. It surely looked like something of the kind. Anyways great content you made there!
I used to live near that slum you’ve been to, thanks for your beautiful and respectful work. Brazil is my favorite country in the world. Unique energy. I hope you can get a rest from what you saw that day. Personally I never forgot the raw part of Brazil.
Thanks Jamie, must have been interesting living near here.
HOUSING ESTATES IN UK ARE WORST THAN ANY SLUM IN BRASIL
so you lived in copacabana, right? ever went to pavao? its not even close to be one of the most dangerous places in rio lol
I love how you respect their culture listened what he was telling you showing his point of view and how he showed you everything step by step of course making sure you were not in danger, this is one of the most beautiful and incredible video, believe me I learned a lot about Brazil culture and fabelas environment I could say is not safe for abroad people going there of course but it was a good experience even this was through this vide. thanks for sharing us this experience.
Thank you for watching, Christian!
He did not. The woman clearly states the she likes living there and that’s it’s a peaceful place. His reaction: nah, she doesn’t know what she’s talking about, it’s gonna “pop off” any minute (whatever the fukk that means)

I am glad that you experienced Rio and the favelas. One thing to remember is that Brasil is the largest country in South America and there are many, many breath taking places that are outside of Rio de Janeiro. Great documentary and I am glad that you were able to experience what is like to reside there! ✔👍🏽
This is what it's about everyone. I have watched your videos for years and excited for each new one. The way you shoot, explore and show us these interesting places with out corporate brainwashing watering it down or poisoning the raw showcase. No filters no agenda. You give a view of these locations as if your a native of said.places. I would have loved to visit some of these places you have gone to over the years. Let's hope you can stay on youtube or find another platform to continue these video series. Stay safe my brother and thank you for your incredible journalistic escapades.
Makes my day, thank you very much for these words. Appreciate the long time support over the years :)
Well said my friend. Was about to write something along the sorts but you captured it brilliantly.
Love your documentaries man, amazing quality. Glad to have discovered this channel
Thanks, Andy!
Love that you have enough empathy and awareness to not run out a list of all the negative things you saw. It shows that you do this because you care and not solely for shock value clicks. Keep up the great work.
Thank you :)
I was there last month and it’s truly a mix of beauty and darkness. Love your content stay safe
As favelas são apenas um pequeno pedaço do Brasil !!!
Can you speak Portuguese? Is it common for black Americans to go to Brazil? I always wanted to go, but I don't know anyone who's been. How do you get around?
@@dbjungle navigating Brazil without Portuguese is totally possible, real is a bit harder in my opinion. But it wouldn’t be hard to befriend someone from Rio on-line and have them show you around. Most Brazilian people super interested in foreign countries, but only a few have the opportunity to go abroad, so that’s a chance for them to experience it. You’ll also have a more authentic experience if you have a Brazilian person alongside.
@@dbjungle Good Morning, When I was there I took a tour of Rochina snd the tour guide and I hit it off. He became my friend and we talk or communicate everyday through WhatsApp. Carlos also lives in Roschina and so he is my connection to Brazil . I am happy to give you his information. We are currently supporting 6 families monthly that are in dyer need. I send the funds and he purchases the essentials to provide to the families . Great people there

rio is so beautyfull ,the sunshine the crisp air it seems and the favala has a aesthetic beauty.
As a brazilian who lived most of his life in Rio, I must say that Cantagalo-Pavão-Pavãozinho, the favelas that you have visited, are not even considered dangerous from the cariocas. Not kidding. Jacarezinho, Manginhos, Complexo do Alemão, Mangueira, Cidade de Deus (City of God) and Rocinha are the worst.
yea, this is just a taste of what is out there. no way a youtuber could get inside and record in 'the most dangerous' parts.
Yeah. There is even a jazz bar up there popular with tourists.
This video is a complete bullshit.

Absolutely fascinating video. So much culture, thank you for sharing this side of such a beautiful country.
sorry to say, but this is exactly the naive comment that makes me sick coming from a foreigner. For God's sake! Favelas are a place of crime!
