#GameOfTheYear2023 #GameOfTheYear #GotY - เกม
Any year that Pizza Tower came out in is automatically not only a good year for gaming, but one of the BEST years for gaming. The fact that we got The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur's Gate 3, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Super Mario RPG remake, Hi-Fi Rush, Cyberfunk Bomb Rush, Sea of Stars, Pikmin 4, Spider-Man 2, Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4 remake and Alan Wake 2 on top of all that is just mind-boggling (there's also games like Boneraiser Minions, F-Zero 99, Karmazoo and Born of Bread that I really like but I doubt you'll see many people talking about). This truly was one of gaming's best years (in terms of games at least, not so much for the people who actually make the games).
Yeah it’s been a crazy year. I hope pizza tower gets a console release at some point as it looks great.
Peppino rise up!
I really like how Ash places a lot of value on soundtracks in either his reviews or in lists like these. His passion for the world of video game OSTs is infectious 🙂
His gushing over Theatrhythm especially makes me wanna go back and play it some more! So much great music in that game!
Been a decent year for VG music, even though I haven’t played it will always enjoy the Octopath Traveler 2 theme. The new version of Trauma in Ghost Trick is an ear worm for me
@@diabeticman2194 The new Ghost Trick soundtrack is excellent! 😁 Trauma, as you pointed out, is a banger; so much oomph! I also really enjoy the new versions of Lynne's theme and Fate Changed -Variation-.
@@GentlemanGamer94 Inspector Cabanela's music was another highlight for me
Love how ToTK dungeons are set up. The entire traversal up to the actual dungeon feels like a part of it. It makes the dungeons feel like part of the world instead of totally separate.
It’s kind of crazy that they haven’t made a Sonic rhythm game yet, considering how many bangers are in his catalog and how momentum and rhythm would play so well together.
Unfortunately, barely anyone talks about Bayonetta Origins. That game is underrated.
Check out Steve’s video from the month it came out her gushed about it.
I played through it, and 100% it. Quite enjoyable and quite a Bayonetta style story, when it comes to it. I played through that pretty fast.
For real, easily the most underrated game of the year. I think Steve is the only GVG member who’s actually played it.
@@akaimizu1 Same, I collect all Moon Pearls and Fruits and 100% the map.
It made it on atleast 1 of the Gvg crews list I’m pretty sure haha
Absolutely agreed on Robbie Daymond. I don't think The Game Awards would quite get to nominating him, even IF they had an Actor in a Sole/Primary Playable Character Role category (there are THREE major candidates for Sole/Primary Playable Character roles in GOTY nominees (Jeter, Villi and Porretta, Apostolides) that would be higher on the docket), but Hi-Fi Rush would still be VERY represented under the six category system I'd want. Sunil Malhotra in Actor in a Secondary Playable Character Role, Erica Lindbeck and Sarah Elmaleh in Actress in a Secondary Playable Character Role, Misty Lee and Camilla Arfwedson in Actress in an NPC Role and Todd Haberkorn as Zanzo in Actor in an NPC Role. Yes, 3 tiers with gender split.
Tears of the Kingdom is every bit the miracle it's made out to be, and certainly doesn't deserve to be labeled as glorified DLC. Getting that and Baldur's Gate 3 in the same year is borderline unprocessable.
The people who label TotK as DLC but praise ALBW for doing the same thing TotK is astounding to me lol
It's the awkward nature of reusing the game's overworld map. People don't realize the development time went onto things like engineering the physics required for the new abilities (and optimizing them so they can run on a potato console)
@@roskiart8750 Not to mention even the reused map is very different content wise.
Knowledge of BOTW's layout is certainly useful, but it's far from what one might think.
@@heavydonkeykong5190 That's the natrue of expectations VS reality. The layman might not understand WHAT takes development time, or that simply might not align with what they see value in. If they think it's not how you can explore things, but what there is to explore, the fact said "how" took so much time an effort to build may simply not align with the expectations they had as to what the game "should've been".
That's where you see the discourse around TotK, the complaints lie on the reused content... not realizing the game isn't even running on the same engine which means a LOT had to be reworked from the ground up,
I love TOTK but don't get it twisted : it definitely is a BOTW 1.5. And the game still carries on some of BOTW's flaws which could've been fixed (take the atrocious button mapping or weapon switching for example)
But for every flaw this game compensates with good ideas/innovations and that's what I love about the game.
And also about the dungeons : the fact that they were better than BOTW's sub-garbage divine beasts doesn't make them suddenly good: they went from sub-garbage to garbage (the lead-up to the dungeon is the best in the series though imo).
Great video! It makes me want to try rhythm games, they've always passed me by but every time I see those final fantasy characters jumping around to the music it brings a smile to my face, it's so cute!
(also, I think it's so weird to keep complaining about the lack of specific games on these type of lists, it's their personal favourites of the year from the games they played... It's super personal anyway,)
I'm so glad I watched your Theatrhythm stream when the game came out because I had never heard of the series before the direct and knew nothing about it. Picked it up right after and have been playing it nonstop all year.
Ash, I wanna let you know how much your list this year resonated with me. I love the way you worded your points about the games on this list and found myself agreeing with so much of what you said. I really appreciate your perspective on gaming where it can have large, grand adventures or it can be something as niche as a rhythm game compilation and everything in between still has a fair shot at ranking high up on a year-end list. It's always nice to see people that have that all inclusive frame of mind that can see personal value in many differing genres and styles. And it's so nice that these games continue to exist. Keep it up and have a great new year!
One thing that surprised me with Tears of the Kingdom is how people are hardly ever talking about the new labyrinths in the game. Those literally blew me away. I guess it is because they don’t want to reveal the spoiler of discovery, but even showing them on the map reveals nothing about what you actually go through to complete them. If you go into them expecting the solutions to be like Breath of the Wild, in how they handled them when you can go just about anywhere, you’ll have no hint on what wild approach they did this time, until you see it.
Even though I finished the story, and did all the extra stuff specifically for the story (naturally, in fact), I still have a lot to go back to and do.
Well, the talk of Tears of the Kingdom was heavily swayed by "hey, that guy made Godzilla with Ultra hand" so a lot of the new content got sidelinded in online discourse.
@@roskiart8750yeah. I can see that.
I’d love to get a top 10 soundtracks of the year from you guys
Same! 🙂
XC3 would definitely be up there - the game came out last year but the OST only released this year with the DLC. OP2 would be there, too, I'm sure
Also agreed! There's so many incredible bangers on the XC3 OST: Agnus Castle (Night), Fort O'virbus (Night), Immediate Threat, New Battle, so on and so forth 🙂
What are some of your favorite tracks?
@@GentlemanGamer94 I absolutely love the Moebius battle theme and I've got Kaleidoscopic Core as my ringtone. And of course any Xeno song with lyrics is fantastic
@@TaliesinMyrddin Phenomenal choices!
Moebius is of course, bombastic and fantastic. I wouldn't have thought a battle version of Drifting Soul would work so well, but it absolutely slaps too!
And as you say, all 3 vocal themes in Xenoblade 3 are wonderful 🙂 they are each integrated so well into the story and are also really engaging to listen to on their own.
Finally some love for Hi-Fi Rush, easily my GOTY.
I would lay down my life for Partitio
Good list Ash, i enjoy seeing yalls favorite games this year
Jon and Ash and NBZ putting Street Fighter 6 in their top 10s of 2023?! I’m loving this. HADOKEN
I’m glad Final Bar Line took #2 for you! I mentioned this on Derrick’s video, but I loved Tears of the Kingdom and the ton of time I put into it, but I just keep going back to FBL in my spare time, so I’d argue it places above TotK personally.
Finally someone that acknowledges Hi Fi Rush, great list
Oh I absolutely love final bar line I have put 80 hours into it already, got three digits deuxe edition and all the DLC…amazing. That being said Octopath traveler 2 was my GOTY I have put 170 hours in and it blew me away
I feel like Sea of Stars received lots of praise immediately after the release, but after a few months nobody talks about the game anymore. Keep on grinding, dude!😊
Ash you made an awesome video. Also I enjoyed Mario Wonder.
I love how much Ash reps the Horizon games. Such a great, original concept and solid execution.
GVG crew must have felt so out of the loop when Baldur’s Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 were winning so many awards recently.
Why are BG3 fans like this? How does someone not mentioning BG3 affect you?
@@chooongusbug724 The irony of you asking such a question.
@@roskiart8750You are obsessed with this choongus person and I really think you need help
@@roskiart8750The irony about asking why BG3 fans can't accept that maybe someone hasn't played the game or that they don't like it and BG3 fans can't accept that? Why are you following this choongus person around? Where did that rando in a TH-cam comment section hurt you?
@@frgierom4475 No, the irony is that this comment may not even be hostile (half the GVG crew hasn't even played BG3 or Alan's Wake 2 so it really must have been baffling when the two games they didn't get got so many awards) yet choongus here and others immediately assume otherwise.
"there's no loading between the sky the main land and the depths" bruh was it just my game where it took 2 years to dive from one area to another?
I REALLY need to play Hi-Fi Rush. My brother got it for me as a birthday present on Steam, and I still haven't touched it.
Chai was one of the inspirations that led to me making my Robbie Daymond Voice Tribute back in March.
Ash video is always awesome loving the Gorilla studio rep
Oh man!
Thank you Ash. I was on the fence about Sea of Stars. But you mentioned Lufia 2, my favorite game of all time. So I downloaded Sea of stars today!
One of the best games of the year, and that's saying a lot considering all the games this year
Burning Shores gave HFW the ending and the boss fight the game deserves. But we really need to see Aloy's new friend again! 😉
Super Mario RPG, it is the only one just for me.
I knew if anyone was gonna gush about Hi-Fi Rush, it was gonna be Ash. MY MAN 🙏
At this point, I think Daniel is the best chance we have to stop the TotK clean sweep with the F word or P word series of games. Not that I can complain, as TotK deserves the praise
Unless Daniel really loved another game this year like fire emblem, i dont see him being the exception
The tastes of the GVG crew are fairly uniform so this is no surprise.
Other channels might have given more credit to Baldur's Gate 3 or Allan Wake 2. Not to say TotK isn't a stellar game that looks like wizardry but it makes the lists feel more predictable, really.
@@shigerumiyamoto9612 That's what I meant
Honestly unless Daniel pulls a wild card, the only person I could see not having it be their GOTY is Brandon due to how much he enjoyed Mario Wonder.
@@amirgarcia547 Oh right, Brandon gushed the heck over that game. Steve MAY have chosen SpiderMan 2 in another timeline too.
I finally cought up with 10 top videos & as always Derrick have almost the same list as me while is the most bit different if thr list 👍
Dang, that’s now four for four when it comes to TotK being someone’s GOTY for GVG! Which it certainly deserves, as it’s by and large my favorite game to come from this year as well. Let’s see if Daniel and Brandon end up breaking this impressive streak, though I have a feeling Brandon will end up choosing another game due to how much he gushed about it in a video of his.
I guessed your number one right!
You look like John Connor. Subscribed!
yeah totk is officially the gvg game of the year
As someone who hasn't played Theathrythm, I can't get it through my head how you're supposed to play it with a controller. Like I look at it and I try to imagine the inputs and I just don't see how it's supposed to work lol
Octopath Traveler 2 > Sea of Stars
By a long shot.
Part-time Retronaut!
Love the mention of Hi-Fi Rush, but has no one on the channel even played Baldur's Gate 3?
This is GVG, bias for JRPGS and against WRPGs is pretty much the norm. And no, I don't say this with any animosity, it's just this channel isn't even remotely subtle about it's biases.
Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, they're transparent about what they like and what they don't. Still, that means you're out of luck in them discussing some entire genres past a few select titles (I don't hold my breath for any FPS talk out of them outside the occasional Halo mention because I know what expect of them).
God I wish BG3 fans would chill out when someone doesn't talk about BG3
@@chooongusbug724 Eh, you have a game that from a technical standpoint almost looks like actual fucking wizardry (let alone all the things about it that might be up GVG crew's alley like the game's inclusiveness) and the entire channel is like "eh, don't like Dark Fantasy"(as well as some genuinely condescending takes from Steve) so I honestly get it.
And I say that as someone who looks at the game's user interface and goes "nope, not a chance".
Um if it’s bias than it’s no different then BG3 channels down playing Zelda . I honestly think both are great games and you could flip a coin for GOTY but what Zelda does on switch hardware is impressive. Nintendo should be commended for the quality they put in
@@Cappuccino1250this is the way but you don't see Zelda fans going to BG3 videos hyping up Zelda. I love BG3, I love TotK but there's a time and place to show appreciation for these games. Complaining in a comment section about BG3 not showing up when dudes are talking about stuff they enjoyed, it's very off putting
Everyone is mentioning Baldur's Gate, but last year it was the same deal with Elden Ring
Yeah, no surprises there. GVG are not too big on western RPGs nor dark fantasy aesthetics (Final Fantasy XVI gets a paass because it's Final Fantasy)
@@roskiart8750 They historically have preferred Japanese/Anime games, so stuff like From Soft which highly appeals to Western audiences falls off their radar.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed! ❤
Best DLC I've ever played!
Damn, I was so hyped for Horizon, but then I got hardlocked in the tutorial of all places and it really killed any momentum it could've made. Maybe I should revisit it.
That's just the horizon curse in motion
I disagree about characters backstory being added with future redeemed when you have majority new characters not in the main game along 2 returning characters from 1+2
Future Redeemed keeps ranking 😎🥲
Wow... TotK is really going to be everyone's top game this year isn't it?
Edit: I did not write this comment with ill intent.
Maybe Brandon will go for Mario Wonder at least? Who knows, totk is superb so there's no surprise at being number 1 a lot. Personally, I'm very interested in hearing about their other games and what moved them so much.
I mean, I'm happy about it, but it's still really surprising. Quite the game.
Well it's Zelda. Every big & impactful Zelda game released on that time will be everyone's Game of the Year.
@@jaretco6423 Honestly I was torn between BOTW and Odyssey in 2017. Still am lmao.
@@heavydonkeykong5190 Well BotW was gonna win anyway.
Tears of the Kingdom stays sweeping
Spider Man?
Hair
I'm starting to think the GVG crew enjoyed Tears of the Kingdom with these videos. As did I, it's definitely my GOTY and I'm so glad it clicked with me better than BotW did.
all 5 totk haters and their army of bots are furiously complaining in gvg's comments... and not unsubscribing 😂
B. Gate 3 getting no love on this channel?
Not their style of game. And the one person that might like it among the group is waiting for it to release on physical.
Sheesh. Seems that every one of these groups would pick TotK as there #1 Game of the Year. Not calling the game bad here. But like, really? I found the game to be kinda overrated.
It's a surprisingly divisive game. It's a good game, but some people think it's guaranteed GotY status and some people don't think it should really qualify for the discussion at all - at least in an official capacity, personal opinions are fair game. I've seen long-term Zelda fans who loved BotW say Tears was a relative let down and they're already getting tired of the formula/flaws, so it's not like it's just 'haters' or people who liked the original format more.
I personally think it's overrated too, but at least the GvG guys are pretty good about talking about their experiences and why they think it deserves top spot on their list, instead of the more common "it's obviously GotY because reasons, why don't you just quit the communities you've been in for the last 25 years" implications I see from the more.. passionate fans.
I don't think Tears quite qualifies as DLC but it actually felt closer to DLC than Future Redeemed did to me, and that's amusing.
@@TaliesinMyrddin I figured the only reason the game becomes #1 is because it's Zelda. Any big and impactful Zelda games will guarantee will be the Game of the Year and Zelda has been nominated as the Game of the Year throughout every year.
@@jaretco6423 That's kinda how I feel, yeah. It's why I was pleasantly surprised that BG3 won at TGA this year, although I take any of their awards with a grain of salt.
@@TaliesinMyrddin Yeah. As bad as that reward show was, I'm kinda glad another game won the GotY and not Zelda again.
They don't think so, though, and it's their lists.
A dlc for horizon bettwr than mario wonder? Already disliked
Styling your bangs that way just makes it more obvious that your hair is thinning.
Good list though
Damn, this bunch of Zelda diehards must've felt weird as hell seeing so many other games getting GOTY (especially Baldur's Gate 3).
That would imply Tears of the Kingdom didn't get any GotY awards... which it did.
I do think their omission of that game is on the dismissive side to a degree, but to think it's just because they're Zelda die hards comes across as condescending if not flat out stupid.
Well, if it's making you this butthurt and increasing their engagement, why not?
And comments like these are why people think BG3 fans sniff their own farts 🤷♀️
@@chooongusbug724 Not that you're being any more civil.
@@roskiart8750 me saying BG3 fans are in this comment section acting like they sniff their own farts isn't exactly uncivil. It's true, they're acting weird and elitist due to their game not being spoken about when they know this channel probably won't talk about it. But hey, go off and go back to calling people who disagree with you names. Stay mad
This year was filled with amazing games.
I had almost the same exact top 10, until you got to your top 3. 😂
